Campea you're way off. Stopped the review at the 4:58 mark. Usually in lock step with you, but Glass was pretty damn good. It feels like it picks up perfectly from where Unbreakable left off. I didn't feel pandered to at all unless you're going to say Unbreakable also pandered to comic book fans. Thematically its virtually the same film as Unbreakable with solid writing and acting. I agree it was slow in the middle but the ending made up for it. And I took my two kids 16 & 14 and thought they'd hate it and they walked out of the theater raving about it. We disagree here, my friend. 8/10.
I loved every minute of this movie. I think people are very spoiled with the modern comic book movies. If you go into this movie with an open mind and realize that it's a sequel to Unbreakable and not a Marvel movie you will have a good time.
It's all about PERSONAL opinions, man. Overall I also enjoyed this film, but it has a few key weaknesses that hold it back in comparison to the greatness of "Unbreakable" and "Split". A competent conclusion to this epic story, but... it could've been better and more on point. Still, the main actors were great (James McAvoy, man... he is truly a BEAST of an actor), the visuals were compelling, the soundtrack was chilling and the action scenes were also filmed pretty dynamic and intense.
You kind of created an excuse for people having a different opinion from you. "If you go in with an open mind" people did go in with an opem mind, it just turns out they didn't like it.
If you didn't like the movie that's fine. There's nothing wrong with that. I never said it as fact, I should clarify that I'm trying to say that if you want to see it go see it, don't let a review dictate whether you are going to enjoy it or not.
@@edabakb Yes, he starts taking about it at around 1:35. Says that the movie panders to a comic book audience it doesn't understand. I get why people feel that way. Yet, I don't think the movie is aiming for that, it's just trying to answer questions from unbreakable. But, again, I get why people are disappointed.
Why do you even care about the opionionS of everyone else? You enjoyed (just as I did btw) and had a lot of fun while watching (just like me... for the most part). It's definitely NOT a bad movie, but IMO "Split" was better paced, had a more engaging story and much more suspense until the very end. "Glass" had a good and ("slightly") controversial ending which is gonna make us all talk about it for quite some time. If that is indeed the case, than M. Night Shyamalan has obviously achieved his goal flawlessly. Who cares about RT and IMDb? We all go and watch this flicks because we all love the 7th art and not never shy away from some extra escapism :D
Darth Radious It’s not bad to be curious, that’s The Whole point. I care because I like to understand what others see, what the expected, what would have been better to them. I value other people’s opinions. It won’t change mine, as it shouldn’t but it causes conversations and I enjoy that.
Completely disagree. I don’t see how it was pandering at all. As far as the comic book references throughout the film, Unbreakable did the same thing. The ending is a complete flip of what a comic book film fan would expect, in my opinion. It’s not perfect, but I don’t understand the hate for it honestly.
Unbreakable (2000), Split (2016) and Glass (2019)..... Perfect Trilogy.. Go and watch Glass after watching the other two prequel to get the complete experience and do not go with any expectations. This is not your average superhero movies.
Rawbeard I didn't say watch the other two films to build your expectations.. I just to get complete experience.. some people just watched split and not Unbreakable.. so they might be wondering why there are certain flashbacks stuffed into the movie
Sorry John but have you seen unbreakable? Because the fact you bring up about them talking about 'in comic books they do this and they do that' is a running theme in unbreakable?
I thought the film was excellent, ending and all. This trilogy to me has always been about the the power of belief and the subjegation of minorities as well as societies in ability to accept change. Which I thought this film delivered beautifully.
It's pretty funny to suggest the guy who wrote Unbreakable _before_ the modern superhero movie era and _before_ comic book culture became cool is actually some old out-of-touch dude who doesn't love comic books and who's just cluelessly pandering to an audience he doesn't understand.
I loved it. It built upon Elijah's assumption about the world around him. Sure there were a couple heavy handed comic metaphors but it fits Elijah's character from Unbreakable. I think the comics were also used as decent tools for the side characters to flesh out their side stories. Mr. Glass turned out to be right all along. That's why I think this is his movie. The mastermind always has a plan. Split was the only film in the Eastrail 177 trilogy that felt underhanded to me but this film now elevates it. James McAvoy's performance was easily the best. The revelation about him at the end ties up the three stories in a tight little bow. Bruce Willis did feel underutilized but his movie was Unbreakable. This film wasn't meant to be physical, it was cerebral. Looking at it as a trilogy, it's commendable but the ending does open up possibilities to an extended universe. I doubt it would happen but it would be nice to see new takes on superhumans from different directors in this universe.
Ummm Jon did you watch unbreakable?! That is the whole point in the movie...Elijah is obsessed with comic books and the villains and what the represent in real life...seems to me you just forgot what these movies were about. It’s not about pandering...
I think Glass is probably the most realistic super hero movie we ever had with an awesome Conclusion of Unbreakable and Split. Probably a direct opposite to a super hero movie. The ending makes so clear by *SPOILER* by shamelessly killing of elijah david and kevin that they are just the beginning. They are so many more people with super powers in the world and by revealing this secret organisation that stopped this you realized that Beast and Dunn werent that special in the greater picture.
Amazing to see how critics completely miss the twist ! M Night clearly DID NOT pander to the comic book audience. Infact he did the exact opposite with the 3rd act. This is what pissed off a lot of people. All the comic book references are meant to be a misdirection so that twist works and it surely works well. This is NOT a comic book movie. It is a dark thriller with superhumans in it. There are no superheroes and villains in it, just people with special abilities. That's all. Really disappointed with this review.
Glass is a movie that most people won't understand. This movie goes deep into our society in a big way. Doesn't pander at all, disagree with this review. People loved Thor Ragnarok but hate this, we truly live in insane times.
@@ISleepAndIKnowThings Actually the ending is built towards if you pay attention in Unbreakable and Split. Campea and quite a few people went into the movie expecting typical superhero formula, but as Glass said, "This isn't a comic book. Nor is it a cartoon". Glass is basically what Unbreakable was for its time. It's even getting the same response. This is basically a "I expect this. I didn't get this. It sucks". There was no pandering. Actually the movie plays on the fact the audience went in with a certain expectation so when stuff happens and you're basically told this isn't DC or Marvel, you're taken aback, for the good or bad. Sadly this is what happens when you got a typical by the numbers superhero flick every week. The Dark Knight would probably be looked upon as too dark and edgy if it came out today.
@@FateTearsStudios Who thought this was a Marvel or DC movie? Just making excuses for the ending sucking. "Oh you just didn't get it or the other movies" There is no payoff to the end of the trilogy. I knew going in this wasn't a "comic book" movie. You're telling me the movie intentionally tried to play off people thinking that? Completely absurd. It's sucks because it sucks. Nothing more, nothing less.
ducksox_815 Exactly. Terrible comments like these bozos using Marvel and DC as the blame goes to show you how insecure people are about this movie. It’s just genuinely not well written. Not just the ending but other stuff too.
Totally disagree with you John, the movie was pretty good. Maybe because I didn't have the high expectations that you had. The comic book thing was carried over from Unbreakable as it was about Glass's passion for comic book stories and myths, nothing to do with pandering to comic book movie fans. Also totally agree with your points about James McAvoy, what a great performance. He deserves some sort of award for this performance.
Interesting notes I got from this video. 1) John mentioned a pacing problem with Glass however Unbreakable and Split is just as slow if not slower than Glass is. Unbreakable only has the one fight scene between David Dunn and the Orange Man closer to the end. Split didn't have The Beast show up till closer to the end. What makes it tolerable is the wonderful performances from McAvoy, Jackson, and Willis. Hell in this trilogy, no one ever gives a performance that comes off as boring or dull. 2) You mentioned Glass reintroducing the same concept over and over. Which I assume is the concept of Sarah Paulson's character telling David Dunn, Mr. Glass, and Kevin that their superpowers is nothing but delusions of grandeur. But it was used as build up to Mr. Glass's elaborate scheme in response to this much like what Split and Unbreakable did. For example: -With Split the concept used over and over was someone with D.I.D. could change their body chemistry depending on their personality thus building up Kevin's eventual turn into The Beast. A personality with superhuman capabilities. -With Unbreakable it was the concept of Mr. Glass thinking if his bones could break easily then maybe there's someone out there who's bones can't break. Which builds up to Glass finding and motivating David Dunn to become a superhero essentially. 3) The comic book pandering you speak of was done in Unbreakable. Mr. Glass in particular uses his comic book theory and knowledge to educate those who don't know how to explain these superhuman abilities. Most of Unbreakable is covering this to David Dunn and his family. Mr. Glass does it again because he's meeting Kevin for the first time and drops the same knowledge to him similarly like he did to David. My point here is you just complained about things in Glass that M. Night Shamaylan kept consistent with the previous movies. It's just the style and realm of what he created. Not every superhero movie is the same.
I think ppl are too blinded by the high budget comic films today. This was a good film. More importantly, a good ending to a very good trilogy. It does not stand on it's own, but ok....Split was a standalone film. Unbreakable was a standalone film. This film needed those 2 films imo. And Dunn was kinda left on the sidelines. Great, no. Good, yes. A semi comic, human psyche thriller....that is what was promised at Comic Con. That's what we got. 8.5/10
Just saw this movie earlier today I thought it was great . I do think we are spoiled by todays big budget comic book movies . I was happy to see this movie take a total different approach.
The two kittens Entertainment inc I’ve now seen it twice and I loved it more. A lot of these reviews are legitimately confusing me and I usually agree with some but this one I definitely do not.
This movie does not pander. Unbreakable as a movie and trilogy are literally about comic books being an exaggeration of reality. Why wouldn't the conclusion to the trilogy reinforce that concept? I agree with some of the pacing issues. But this was without a doubt a Glass film and if you watched paid attention to the past 2 movies, it'd be clear that this movie only reinforces Elijah's statements/beliefs from Unbreakable. With that said, I understand why this is divisive. But this movie isn't for the masses.
No need to get upset. The movie just wasn't for you. If you wanted to see a fast paced action movie that didn't require any prior knowledge, I completely understand your point. And don't get it twisted, I'm no comic book fan. I've never read a comic, nor do I own any. I don't care about comic books, I like films that make you want to have conversations. I love big concepts and well thought out ideas. And you'd have to be a huge fan over the trilogy to understand this movie let alone like it
I thought the big reveal at the end could've been better executed but I think it made sense. I feel like the movie could've been extended for another 30-40 minutes. I have my problems with it. I just didn't like the fact that John made it seem like the movie reinforcing the main ideas of the trilogy was inappropriate. But why are you so angry lol. Calm down. Endgame is around the corner. You'll be fine. A little drama and suspense isn't gonna kill you.
I’ve heard a lot about the “comic book try hard” thing but something I think that’s important to remember is that that’s what Mr Glass is all about - his character is literally obsessed with comic books, that’s a major part of his character - I think everyone should rewatch unbreakable before seeing it - it made perfect sense to me. I loved the movie. And I mean no disrespect whatsoever, i hope this doesn’t come off defensive or anything silly like that, I just wanted to mention that with the comic book bit because I’ve been hearing it a lot, but I think a lot of people forget just how immersed Mr Glass’s character is in the comic book world.
Idk why so many so called critics and reviewers was hard if not hated this great movie. Damn the way it all tied in unbreakable and split and made those movies more interesting and great by explaining things like Kevin parents and how his died dad and was on the same train as David and glass was responsible for his dad dying was brilliant. I think those people were expecting something else they wanted but didnt get it and couldn't except what they gmwas given from this movie and judge it wrong on that. This was not better imo then split but it was almost as good but better than unbreakable in a way to me in my opinion. I know everyone has their own opinion and I accept that I just need it to be reasonable and logical to be. But when people be picky and too negative or a perfectionist about it then that's when I cant accept an opinion. I know I can be disagreed with or even hated for this comment but I think people are being way too hard on it and probably need to watch unbreakable and split back to back then immediately see glass like I did to realize the greatness of this story and how it all ties in. Maybe I'm wrong maybe I need to stop watching or reading reviews or maybe I just dont think alot about all the aspects and know how to watch a movie like other people I just watch to be entertain not critically think alot about a movie like this lol.
It was in no way catering to the Comic Book movie fan. and infact if you have watched UNBREAKABLE, you wouldn't even expect a typical Comic Book Superhero movie. If you did, then you were horribly wrong with your expectation. For what it was, it was an amazing film, and am glad they didn't do a Marvel and DC. I love them both, but this was very refreshing. And in no way did it pander to anyone. Even in Unbreakable, they kept doing it, if that is what you think they did.
Watch Bumblebee again instead of Glass? Are you out of your mind? Loved this movie. Some moments drag a bit, indeed, but it's so good overall. John, I usualy understand your arguments even when I disagree with your opinion, but I had to comment on this one. Glass was everything I wanted to see since I saw Unbreakable in theater back then. (More Willis would have been nice though)
Definitely going to have to disagree about the pacing. This movie had me interested from start to finish and felt shorter than it actually was. I don't believe he was pandering to the superhero audience at all, it felt like a continuation from Unbreakable. This is hundreds of times better than the visit. I still like Split a little more but all the films feel complete by the end of this. I liked the ending but I can see where people wont for sure, like you said it is bold for sure.
I respectfully disagree, I think it’s a very a good movie and just because didn’t go the way some people want it they are trashing it. I think some critics let there fan boy speak or react just because they didn’t like some choices they make, on the other hand when a horrible, unwatchable movie like the last Star Wars movies come out they are trying to the defend something that is un defendable just because they let the fan boy speak before.
Sucha great movie. Not sure what everyone's on about. This movie is not trying to pander to a comic book movie audience. It is the antithesis to comic book movies just as Unbreakable was. Perfect conclusion to the trilogy. Only enhances what came before and brought it all full circle!
I’ve enjoyed your hard work and creative analysis over the years, but you missed the mark entirely here. M. Night isn’t pandering and he’s not trying to shoehorn his universe into a superhero universe at all. The comic book world’s connection to meta humans was the starting point of Unbreakable. Glass has so many surprises! I can’t wait for the next film related to this universe. Sadly, if the box office is not there then we will be denied what could easily have expanded into another amazing trilogy. John, you denied the sheep or the unimaginative an opportunity or the encouragement necessary to move this project forward. You have an audience and you’re putting it in their mind that this film is unworthy. :-/
Seriously, every so-called comic book fan out there should be insulted by this film's incessant need to describe every trope as it's happening, as if the audience is too stupid to figure out what's going on for themselves. Secondly, the big reveal at the end of the movie did not work. If a secret society had been trying to eradicate metahumans for centuries, why were they not promptly disposed of when captured? The plot twist does not subvert what came before it - it literally nullifies and voids out the necessity for the last two hours to have played out.
All I know for certain is that some critics/fans hate this film other critics/fans love this film and many are somewhere in the middle! And the uncertainty is only making me more excited to see this come Monday, fingers crossed,,,,, ps I’m very curious to try and figure out what some people loved and hated about it
Funny how people loved The Last Jedi for subverting expectations and complain how comic book movies are too much paint by numbers ended up disliking Glass for subverting expectations and not giving comic book fans what they want. There was no pandering to comic book fans, he wanted a different twist. The arc of Mr. Glass was pretty awesome from his motivation in Unbreakable and his crowning achievement at the end of Glass.
The character behavior in Glass acted in a manner consistent with the prior movies. In TLJ, you cannot say the same. The reason why there were so few super heroes in the Glass universe (a questiom asked my many characters over the three movies) was because of the secret organisation.
@@tritonlockjaw284 merely asserting that something is good is not an argument. Otherwise I can say Troll II is the best movie ever made, and that establishes the conclusion that Troll II is in fact the best movie that was ever made. Saying that TLJ is "actually good" is similarly a mere assertion. GLASS subverted expectations while still preserving logical consistency within the character arcs and the broader universe. The new Star Wars trilogy does neither, although THE FORCE AWAKENS did as much as TLJ to create that mess.
@@tritonlockjaw284 why is it good that the new trilogy actually constitues an undo of the previously positive character arcs that began with the New Hope? Instead of just repeating that something is good, why not explain why? Instead of just repeating that something is bad, why not explain why?
Chris Falkowski Well I would argue that they did the character arcs incredibly well and consistently with Last Jedi. Have you SEEN the original Star Wars films?...
I really have to disagree with you about one thing: It doesn't try to get the comic book audience. Luckily I watched Unbreakable the morning before I watched Glass. Mr. Glass defenetely would think this way about comic books. Also he would try to convince everyone that these things should happen like in a comic book. Also he knew that the final showdown wasn't gonna take place near the skyscraper. He knew they had to fight at the facility, so the superheroes would be leaked to the world. So from his point of view, it makes sense to talk about heroes and villains this way.
I thought the movie was great. Honestly don't understand the critics stance on this film. I usualy agree with the consensus of reviews, but this time I found there to be hollow critisms. Don't get me wrong not a perfect film, but still very well done and unique. I think people are getting confused with disapointment and actual quality of the film.
@@jermainesneed1002 it's the arguments he's making that Shyamalan was pandering to the comic book movie audience while not understandibg them. I personally thought it was obvious that he was intentionally subverting the expectations of said audience, showing that he knows exactly what they're expecting per Marvel and DC, and also showing a clear knowledge and respect for comics in general, but then giving the audience something completely different and original. There was zero pandering from my perspective. If someone doesn't like the movie, that's their choice. But the argument here, I believe, is just wrong.
I dont believe people who said they loved Unbreakable but they were dissapointed with Glass. If you read Unbreakables reviews back you may notice that it has the same critics. Pacing problem, slow, dumb comic book references.
It's not trying to be a film for anyone. This is M. Night's movie. His telling of his story. What is shameless is expecting CGI blockbuster because everyone is spoiled with marvel to where even there story telling is getting lazy, but no one comments because they are A. Scared or B. Too focused on the spectacle. Glass is a contained psychological thriller that features superheroes. It's not fair to fault a movie because it's not what YOU wanted... Pathetic.
Tony Fierro Subverting expectations doesn't have anything to do with quality. It's about how the film was done. Hence, Last Jedi being one of the best reviewed movies that year.
@@tritonlockjaw284Hey Bradley, I'd have to respectfully disagree my friend, there were indeed a few reviews that mentioned the subverting of expectations as a main point of justification for giving a positive review to the Last Jedi.
Tony Fierro Because they did it well. If they didn't do it well then the critic wouldn't have said that they liked it. I can say I love Aquaman thanks to special effects. But if the effects were terrible, then I probably wouldn't enjoy it as much. It wasn't just because they HAD effects in it. It's the quality that counts and a person's personal viewpoint.
@@tritonlockjaw284 A valid point my friend, but for my retort, if we were to compare both films to qualities other than subverting expectations so as to how the films were done, I shall list a few: 1. Both movies (Glass and The Last Jedi) have great visuals 2. The Performances in the movies were mostly great all around. 3. The tone at times was a bit messy during segments of both movies. 4. Whenever there is action, it is done very well. 5. The Pacing for both movies is a very evident problem, as somewhere in the second act the movies take a grinding halt and take you on a different adventure one would not expect. These are just a few of the points that were said by critics - not me - regarding both movies. As you can see, the points mentioned above are not directed to one single movie but in fact were said about both films, and are crucial elements to determine the quality of the film itself. So I guess what I'm trying to say here is that the critics show a little more consistency in their final say in films. If they mentioned pros and cons to Glass that they also shared with their review of The Last Jedi, then score the movie to an equal or somewhat closer level as the reviewer's ranking of the Last Jedi, or vice versa: if the pros and cons for The Last Jedi are also shared with Glass, then score the Last Jedi to an equal or somewhat closer level to the reviewer's score of Glass.
100% agree.. Also, the characters in Glass were very much true to themselves. There are lines of dialogue from Glass in UNBREAKABLE that directly relate to the twist in GLASS. The movies fit together in a way that is truly a work of art. Meanwhile, the new Star Wars trilogy doesn't even bother to care about continuity, regardless of whether we are talking the galaxy at large (how did the Republic get behind the 8 ball again so quickly, and how could Luke and Han care so little about that change).
Usually I agree with u in most things, but I have to disagree this time. I have watch glass, and it didn't disappoint me at all. I think u missed the point. it's not pandering to all comic book fans. it's pandering to the old school comic book fans while it crap on the "new" comic book fans. also it crap on comic book convention of them becoming just merchandising machine and selling teen shows, which is mostly true now. case point : why do u think why almost all marvel and dc movies now is made for PG-13, even venom. at least we still have dealpool /x-force being R-Rated, but with disney - fox merger, that might be coming to an end too. one thing I do agree with u is that they spend too much time in the asylum, maybe cut 10-15 mins from these would be fine. but it does have some interesting twist and turn, and also James mcAvoy acting during these scenes are almost perfections, almost redeem for overstaying in there. the ending is good too (won't spoil it here). and why the title is Glass, but Samuel L Jackson doesn't do much? because Mr. Glass is the perfect mastermind type super-villians, they don't fight frontally, they tend to be in the background to manipulate and make situations / things happens, which is what he does much in this movie, and all event in the mid to end of movie happens because of his manipulation. so I would have to say it's a deserved title, at least in my opinion.
It's possible all these critics are either a) racist or b) just really stupid because this isn't Transformers - there are no more sequels or toys to sell so it's OK to kill off the main characters :)
I love it when I disagree with you. I felt like all of “pandering” as you call it fit in with who the characters were. Elijah lives and breathes comic books. It makes sense that he tries to apply them to his life. Another character in the film has devoted their life to people like Elijah. It makes sense that they know comic books like the back of their hand. Although, I will admit that I’m not as into comic book films as you are. So, I didn’t feel like I was getting pandered to. Some people will react like I did, some will react like you did. Every scene in the hospital was entertaining. The pacing issues were there. However, I feel that the performances were so good that they kept me from noticing. Not just James McAvoy, Sarah Paulson was good, Samuel L. Jackson was great, Bruce Willis wasn’t sleepwalking. The ending, whilst I enjoyed what they did with it, I do feel like it dragged on for a while. It was like a long wait for a band that’s only okay. Funnily enough, as of today, Glass is probably my favourite film of the year. Keeping in mind that I have only seen Glass and Aquaman.
You keep repeating that the film doesn't understand its comic book audience, but you never say why or how. Why is that so CLEARLY obvious? What does it do to make you think it's out of touch?
I like many ppl don't agree with the "pandering" comment. I do agree that M.Night doesn't really understand comic book fans (some of that comic book explanation dialogue could've been delivered waaay more subtly), but I don't think this movie was made purely for that fanbase. This movie asks the question, should we conform, go with the flow of society & subjugate ourselves trying to be like everyone else; Or should we listen to that little voice in our head & take the chance that we are special, and capable of more than what the ppl who want to hold us back are willing to let us believe.
Akeem Yes...Glass was great. I too dont know what the heck people and critics are smoking. Ok...sure the ending was weak but come on.....the first 90 mins were very enjoyable and any true fan of unbreakable should like it. Theres more than enough to enjoy. I spoke to two strangers in cinema after the film and they both said it was very good. And these were not geeks either. They were sophisticated people and one lady looked like a writer or something. Im starting to wonder if these critics have been paid off or something.
ninjaturtlemaster24 I’m new to this universe, I saw unbreakable and split 1 day before the trailer premiered last year.. This movie got me feeling bad for the villains! I was totally engaged... Who cares if some parts drag.. I agree with what campea says, but I didn’t care cuz I was totally engaged and I didn’t even realize it I mean I’m beginning to believe that critics never can fully enjoy a movie being that their job is to pick it apart Anyway this movie snatched me and never let go!
Akeem Critics in general are cold and heartless. Their only job is to nitpick as you said and tear down anyone if they can. They were wrong on this one. Glass is an awesome film and definitely M.night done really well. Weak ending but still great movie overall
Not only did Mr Glass not have any dialogue till about halfway through the movie but he didn't even move a muscle on camera until halfway through the movie either, he literally just sits there in silence the whole time
I don’t see what your saying about pandering to the comic book movie audience I saw it as a social commentary through and through using comic books to convey the message and how your “Villian” in the end exposed the government for what it actually is, in turn becoming a hero and standing up for those who are different
I loved the ending!! The beast hulking up for my favorite underrated character David Dunn. Absolutely refreshing having a dark ending! MUCH NEEDED from the modern marvel movies! BOOO! James Mac is the shit!!!
Even though Mr. Glass has no speaking lines in the first half of the movie and The Horde has the most screentime, its STILL Mr.Glass' movie & the movie's title suits. The ending proves it.
Comic books do not equal comic book movies. If anything Glass criticizes comic book movies for being shallow derivatives of the underlying thing. Glass is thematically consistent with Unbreakable. This is basically the same response Unbreakable got when it was released too.
I think this is superhero fatigue talking. Part of why Glass was underwhelming to some is because we’re in an age where we’re being bludgeoned over the head with superhero movies. Personally given the comic book parallels in Unbreakable I felt it’s return worked as a jarring framing device. It was all about annoying familiarity and subversion.
There are movies that John hates and I love and vice versa, but I always know were his opinion comes from. This one for the first time I don't get. I loved this movie the most of whole trilogy and I don't understand any line that John says in this video. Like really I don't get it.
CAP'N FAPPEN I think 1 scene in last Jedi compared to what John is saying a whole hour of a movie is slow, I haven’t seen glass, but don’t let the hating on TLJ train get in the way of other movies Being bad
r_u_stilldown Totally agree as it had 0 buildup and killed all the reasons people see these movies. I loved Mr. Glass’ last act, but I hated how the characters just got offed. After 19 years, that’s the big David Dunn pay-off?
I dont understand how you can watch this movie and see that ending and say hes pandering to the comic book audience. I feel like he was doing the opposite. Either way understand your complaints. It was enjoyable could have been way better.
I went into this film with lower expectation due to things the director said about the film and the bad reviews. I enjoyed myself. It's not the moving you were planning in your head but its good, not great. After watching John's Review , your expectations should be low enough to enjoy the film. Go see and have fun with it. John's problem as with most people's problems is they came in with the wrong expectations and I'm not being critical in any way about that. This movie is far from perfect but fun at the beginning and the end. I think i counted three twists total which I saw two from the moment we hit the psyche ward.
That whole comic book talk was in Unbreakable as well though.
Wow. You are SO wrong about who he was making the movie for. The film was a perfect follow-up to both films. You really need to see the film again.
Sole Productions nah it was just a shit film
I’m starting to think people haven’t seen Unbreakable
Campea you're way off. Stopped the review at the 4:58 mark. Usually in lock step with you, but Glass was pretty damn good. It feels like it picks up perfectly from where Unbreakable left off. Derek Anderson That's awesome that you all enjoyed it!! I'm really excited for this movie because Unbreakable is one of my all time favourite films!
@Snehil Shrey that's still a comic book action movie, nothing like Unbreakable.
I don’t understand what everyone else is seeing, i had a lot of fun with it and loved the twist although I saw it coming
You saw the same ending as the rest of us ?
chuck norris yes I did and I loved it.
@@Sdmstudios_ i guess then you are not a long term fan of unbreakable or even a split fan
Split (2016*)
(i agree tho)
jeom thanks for the correction
I loved the movie. I don't want a generic super hero movie. We will have enough of them this year.
"James Mcavoy... stupid."
Oh.
"Stupid good."
Oh!
I think Glass is probably the most realistic super hero movie we ever had with an awesome Conclusion of Unbreakable and Split. Probably a direct opposite to a super hero movie. The ending makes so clear by *SPOILER*
by shamelessly killing of elijah david and kevin that they are just the beginning. They are so many more people with super powers in the world and by revealing this secret organisation that stopped this you realized that Beast and Dunn werent that special in the greater picture.
Great movie. Johns wrong this time
Amazing to see how critics completely miss the twist !
As I'm reading the comments I'm realizing that the critics don't like it but it seems like the audience likes it a lot
Glass is a movie that most people won't understand. This movie goes deep into our society in a big way. Doesn't pander at all, disagree with this review. People loved Thor Ragnarok but hate this, we truly live in insane times.
This has nothing to do with understanding it. That's easy enough. The ending lacked anything that built towards it.
#WeLiveInASociety #GamersRiseUp
As soon as he said go watch Spiderman or Bumblebee i fell to the floor laughing!!
Respect John'n opinion, but I just saw it and LOVED it! What an awesome movie! #watchthismovie
For example:
-With Split the concept used over and over was someone with D.I.D. could change their body chemistry depending on their personality thus building up Kevin's eventual turn into The Beast.
I loved glass
@@valeria262 Which is why I understand the disappointment. The Bumblebee types will should stay home for the big boy films
This movie was so damn good I disagree
He's not saying you can't talk about comic books. They were used well in Unbreakable, but it's about how they were used, not that they were used.
Unbreakable did the comic book thing a whole lot more subtly than Glass.
I really enjoyed this film
Glass is a great movie that, like Unbreakable, will be far more appreciated as the years go on.
I thought it was a good film and exactly the film M Night Shyamalan wanted to make....
Are people deliberately acting dumb to bash this film like this guy??
Dude, this franchise is dead. Even if this makes bank, nobody is seeing a sequel after how the main characters got treated
And the uncertainty is only making me more excited to see this come Monday, fingers crossed,,,,, ps I’m very curious to try and figure out what some people loved and hated about it
I dont understand, this film was very good. a continuation from unbreakable and split i loved it!
Chris Falkowski Because Last Jedi was actually good. And subverting expectations doesn't matter. Quality does. (all opinions though)
The M. Night that gave us The Last Airbender showed up for the ending of Glass.
Glass is an amazing Masterpiece!!! Better Movie than Many movies, whom Critics praise!!!!
I just wanna go to see Mcavoy's performance tbh
If that's all you want you'll love it. He has the most complete arc in the movie
Kris Valle I did not like the movie, but loved every moment with McAVoy so you’ll probably have a good time lol
You clearly didn't understand the film.
Unbreakable 9/10
Split 8/10
Glass 9/10
Ryoka1 I haven't seen Glass yet but Unbreakable is a 10/10 man!! I agree with Split being around an 8/10.
I dont believe people who said they loved Unbreakable but they were dissapointed with Glass. If you read Unbreakables reviews back you may notice that it has the same critics. Pacing problem, slow, dumb comic book references.
Glass is a great movie that is completely obliterated by its god awful ending.
I completely disagree with you about the pandering
It's not trying to be a film for anyone. This is M. Night's movie. His telling of his story. What is shameless is expecting CGI blockbuster because everyone is spoiled with marvel to where even there story telling is getting lazy, but no one comments because they are A. Scared or B. Too focused on the spectacle. Glass is a contained psychological thriller that features superheroes. It's not fair to fault a movie because it's not what YOU wanted... Pathetic.
Just wanted to point this out.
Glass - Subverted Expectations: Terrible Reviews
The Last Jedi - Subverted Expectations: Rave Reviews
@@tritonlockjaw284 A valid point my friend, but for my retort, if we were to compare both films to qualities other than subverting expectations so as to how the films were done, I shall list a few:
1. Both movies (Glass and The Last Jedi) have great visuals
I love the movie. 8/10 for me.
Same. Really liked it outside of the "evil corporation" twist. Wasn't set up nearly well enough.
Unbreakable 10/10
Split 10/10
Glass 10/10
“See kids, we know the jive talk!”. What.
OTN 9 exactly.....wth was that.
I love comic movies and didn't find this movie pandering at all. It was good
Usually I agree with u in most things, but I have to disagree this time.
The film is great. Shame on you John recommending people to give this one a miss...
Steven X yeah, shame on him for having an opinion
You could tell he was wrong about the pandering just from watching Unbreakable.
Guess I'm in the minority, I absolutely loved it. I had a few nitpicks but I still loved it
I totally disagree im sorry. You critics missed the boat on this one
what are you talking about Jon? Glass is amazing and I can't wait for an extended universe.
Yes
Calm down
@@ConnorMcCartney95 not calming down. I even made a full rant video. I love this film
They should have shown a glimmer of the extended universe but you actually saw nothing of that
It doesn't need to be about creating a universe
I was hoping for a movie that would be the opposite of a Marvel movie, so glad that it was its own thing. Loved it.
I almost always I agree with critics but this movie was engrossing and loved the ending. Don't get it the hate at all
You keep repeating that the film doesn't understand its comic book audience, but you never say why or how.
This movie asks the question, should we conform, go with the flow of society & subjugate ourselves trying to be like everyone else;
Or
should we listen to that little voice in our head & take the chance that we are special, and capable of more than what the ppl who want to hold us back are willing to let us believe.
It was a GREAT MOVIE!!! I’m sorry you didn’t like it but I got a good reaction at the movies.
This movie is fucking awesome!!! Idc what anyone says it’s fucking great!
I agree with what campea says, but I didn’t care cuz I was totally engaged and I didn’t even realize it
I mean I’m beginning to believe that critics never can fully enjoy a movie being that their job is to pick it apart
Anyway this movie snatched me and never let go!
Akeem Critics in general are cold and heartless. Their only job is to nitpick as you said and tear down anyone if they can.
They were wrong on this one.
Glass is an awesome film and definitely M.night done really well. Weak ending but still great movie overall
Agreed. Critics are wrong about this movie. Loved it!
Derek Anderson they are dead wrong!
Well, Mark Kermode said it was his best film since Signs.
You read way too much into it John. Relax.
david r macri huh? That’s his job.
True. It's just the whole "outrage' about comic book fans that was silly.
Not only did Mr Glass not have any dialogue till about halfway through the movie but he didn't even move a muscle on camera until halfway through the movie either, he literally just sits there in silence the whole time
He moved plenty of muscles, his face twitched the whole time 😂
I don’t see what your saying about pandering to the comic book movie audience I saw it as a social commentary through and through using comic books to convey the message and how your “Villian” in the end exposed the government for what it actually is, in turn becoming a hero and standing up for those who are different
M Night Shyamalan is cinematographic blue balls.
Its worth watching just for the James Macavoy performance.
david FACTZ
It didn't feel like pandering to me. They didn't write that dialogue for comic book fans. It was done for general audiences.
People need to read more underground comic books. Glass was awesome!
I liked it, not as much as Unbreakable or Split but I still enjoyed it
I think this is superhero fatigue talking. Part of why Glass was underwhelming to some is because we’re in an age where we’re being bludgeoned over the head with superhero movies. Personally given the comic book parallels in Unbreakable I felt it’s return worked as a jarring framing device. It was all about annoying familiarity and subversion.
I disagree, I thought glass was pretty great and my theater clapped a lot by the end :/
I kinda liked it!! I didn't expect to feel so much for Elijah and Kevin
There are movies that John hates and I love and vice versa, but I always know were his opinion comes from.
This one for the first time I don't get. I loved this movie the most of whole trilogy and I don't understand any line that John says in this video. Like really I don't get it.
Jon are you seriously gonna talk about pasing I hate to bring up last jedi but that movie had MASSIVE pasing problems too
CAP'N FAPPEN I think 1 scene in last Jedi compared to what John is saying a whole hour of a movie is slow, I haven’t seen glass, but don’t let the hating on TLJ train get in the way of other movies Being bad

@@ConnorMcCartney95 THANKS
I like this movie yeah they are missing somethings but it felt pretty cool watching his son work with his dad almost like batman
When the first star Wars movie came out everyone said it was shit. 40 years later you still have people that are nuts over it.
I normally agree with You on movie reviews but not this time. I really liked it!
Welcome to sesame street, todays word is PANDERING
I hated the secret society twist
r_u_stilldown Totally agree as it had 0 buildup and killed all the reasons people see these movies.
This critic was.....meh
Im sorry but this is not a cómic book movie!!I dont know what are you taking about!! I loved it and my 9 and 12 years old daughters loved it too
2:30 the first 10-15 minutes of Glass are really sharp, get it. Campea accidental wordsmith!!
Sorry but I loved it!!!
