    Glass is a very ambitious M Night Shyamalan movie, but it doesn't quite work. Where did the Samuel L Jackson/Bruce Willis film go wrong? I did into it here.

    The secret society thing was the most RANDOM out of nowhere “twist” ever lol

    • @radrno7
      @radrno7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Not really. Even though it felt random since it wasn't previously established, it does make sense with the rest of the movie, specially with Dr. Staple's subplot. She found out about these individuals, which the organization she works for wants to get rid off silently, so she put them in a mental institution and tried to do it without killing them, by convincing them they're just regular delusional people. Once they broke free, she had no alternative but to let the organization do it their way. Why didn't it work? Because the only times we see anything pointing to this is at the twist, with a sudden symbol that we didn't even see before in the movie or its predecessors. I guess you can blame it in one of Shyamalan's mannerisms, where he insists in putting a really big twist at the end (which in the case of the recordings twist, it works perfectly) but unlike the one from Split, where we saw flashbacks indicating Kevin's and Casey's traumas and why the Beast spares Casey, here it's completely out of nowhere.

      After the ending it begs for a 'hero' who for example saw what they did to David, and we would have a story about a vigilante trying to avenge the fallen hero.
      What comes to mind when you think about justice without a moral code? Hell. (Religion is not the case here) so to develop his character by his super power he would have to control and create heat. Not fire, but heat. This power would be even less recognizable than super strength because you can train your body to feel less cold and stuff like that. But when he would see the video he would come to the realization and spend his time to train his power and go and a revenge crucide against the secret society. Just an idea

      Act three is were the themes are most heavily explored. It made the audience ask a lot of questions about the movie universe such as were ancient rulers superhumans and to prevent tyranny was the secret society formed? There were a lot more question but I can't think of any examples. I'm also glad the third act was deflating. I'm kinda tired off all these predictable superhero movies (I still enjoy them to some degree though). I'm pretty good about predicting movie climaxes so this one was pleasant. Not only did the bad guys win, they also lost, both twists that made sense but weren't easily foresaw. I get why some people don't like it but for me it was my third favorite aspect

    You should re-watch Split again because the two other girls Casey was with were not her friends. Casey had no friends prior to the events in the movie, preferring instead to act up in order to get away from everyone. Throughout the movie she develops a relationship with Hedwig, seeing as how he is gullible and therefore the easiest to talk to. Upon learning that Kevin was unaware of the Horde and a prisoner in his own body, going as far as even asking her to kill him, Casey obviously related to Kevin's situation because she too felt powerless against her uncle. A commenter even made the connection that when Casey pulled the trigger on the Beast it served as symbolism for when she could've shot her uncle, giving her the strength to finally tell the cop about how her uncle abused her near the end of the movie. Casey even mentioned this in Glass. As for your gripe about David Dunn tracking down those teens in the beginning, you must understand that, that was only to show time progression. The movie just shows an accurate representation of how the world and crime has changed over the years. Respect your point of view on the film nonetheless.

      So you just gonna ignore the fact that Kevin suffered from multiple personalities, one of them being of a psycho cannibal, caused by the continuous abuse he suffered much like she did and that he spared her once he realized she was like him and had no intention of hurting her anymore, hence why she was able to hug the Beast? That along with the fact that he helped her grow out of her victim mentality and stand for herself against her abuser, where now she sees in a disturbing he's the only one that understands her?

      1) Those were actual threats, attacking innocent people on the street, and easier to track down, posting their things online while showing themselves. Ridiculous? Maybe. Harmless? Definitely not.
      2) A movie, specially one that works as a sequel to 2 very different movies and one being almost 20 years old, has to show the current status quo. We need to get introduced to David, how his relationship with his son is going and how it's going to set its main conflict, then we need to get introduced to the Horde, what's been doing and how that's going to lead to the plot. Then once you have the characters and the way they're going to confront each other, THEN you can have the fight happen, where both the fans and the average crowd can understand what, how and why it's happening.

      I think people wanted some more substance with him. If glass and Kevin can get some emotional moments with the person who's been on their journey, the son should obviously have that moment with his dad more than the others.. (ok glass gets more since he's the titular character but still). The flashblacks are great but I think we wanted more David Dunn. More David and Elijah. And more of the 3 interacting with each other before the inevitable showdown. I think the dr.staples is great in small doses, she blabber the not superhero thing but David and Elijah knows the truth. We can let Kevin/The horde feel doubt because that's what he's been driven about. He didn't have development like Elijah and David had in unbreakable to know who they are beyond any doubt. Rather its Elijah and David communicating with the mom and son and some bits of Cassie feeling some hate (first half of 2nd act) then remorse for Kevin(somewhere down the 2nd act or middle of 3rd I dunno) because deep down they're both the same in pain and I like that.
      Cassie, David's Son, and Elijah's mom probably should have interacted more sooner than later. Perhaps at first not on board with each other. Mom hates the son for putting her son in bars, Cassie finds the mom and son crazy because they're both dangerous (only relating to their past film dramatic events), and the son desperately wants his dad and could care less about the other two cause he knows both are bad guys. Then later gets this revelation that all of them need to unite to fight a common enemy.

Yes, in this film, there are disadvantages this fact. But I will not say that this film is a failure. Personally, I enjoyed watching from this movie. I liked it more than Split, but less than Unbreakable. Unbreakable is the best in this trilogy, as for me. And yes, my main problem is why he came to me less this is David’s murder. Totally agree. I sat back and was thoroughly entertained. Didn't have any expectations or read into things. I was sad however about David's death (and he died in an undeserving way). I thought the real TWIST was how clever Mr. Glass was, twisting on the twist you could say... they did hit upon the comic book theme a little TOO HARD in some places, where it seemed like a tape on repeat; but I think the originality and putting ALL THESE THREADS together is just such a phenomenal feat, he deserves a lot of credit for his creativity, dialogue, and let's be honest, JMcAvoy, stunning; he deserves an oscar.

      I've seen a lot of people saying that, but Glass's death was the saddest for me. Usually I root for characters like David, but he was just so boring and uninteresting to me. I think Glass is the most compelling character in this entire trilogy. I might be a bit biased since I am a comic book geek who obsessively over thinks everything, including my own existence. But also his disease/power was so tragic, it took his childhood and hopes of finding friendship, love or anything else a person could hope to achieve or live for, so I kinda understood why he was so obsessive and a bit crazy about his whole supervillain existence thing.

Killing them when you first capture them instead of wasting time playing around then killing them anyway? Not putting cameras everywhere to give easy access to proof?!
      Nothing she did made it seem like something a secret society personnel would do to stop that from happening. What it looks like is that plot point got added in at the last second to save time. There is 0 hints as to her being from a secret society in the whole film!

    You miss the point here and I am a fan of your channel, but Glass wasn't about this special people, was about their families, the normal people, the mom who wanted the world to know how special was her son, a boy who's real hero was his dad (that flashback/deleted scene from unbreakable) and Casey, she was broken, like Kevin but she didn't want to become like him, she didn't want to hide from the light like kevin did, she confronted her uncle and reclaim her life and she wanted to save Kevin from that darkness. At the end, they were not special like the others but this secret society throw them to into obscurity, diminishing their fights, their efforts, Elijah was a monster but his sacrifice at the end redeem their families and turn the world upside down... this was just an origin story.
    Oh, and that "unbreakable universe" not matching the "split universe" is like telling the spy thriller winter soldier can't never match the space opera comedy of The Guardians of the Galaxy, but here we are. Glass, like Infinity War, has to be a different movie.

    • @Haze01Smash
      @Haze01Smash 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree with you here, and have been feeling the same way. Currently, I think that the unpleasant feeling the film left me with is due to setting up three different expectations in the concluding moments only to subvert them in downbeat ways that feel like disappointments. There are uplifting counterparts to some of these, but it's not quite enough to get me leaving the theatre energized or happy about the conclusion.
      1) There's going to be a high-profile final showdown at this high-tech tower. It's been foreshadowed that we'd be going there several times, and characters explicitly state this will happen. It seems like a typical place for a super-hero movie's action set-piece and, with this film having a lot to do with the characters embracing their super-ness, it seems appropriate despite the more grounded take on the genre the film's have had up to this point. When this is subverted, and the battle takes place in the hospital parking lot, it actually feels pretty good. The water tank had been foreshadowed pretty heavily, too, so it feels good to have the fight spill over into that. It feels good to have the film avoid super hero tropes and stay grounded. It feels good to learn this was Glass' true plan, anyway. There's still a niggling bit of disappointment that we don't get to see a big climax with huge stakes, but it fits.
      2) David's the hero; of course he'll survive. Between his expected plot armor, his specific powers, and some suggestions that water may not actually be as debilitating to him as we're led to believe, it seems natural that he should survive. He's fought off The Beast while fully submerged, keeping enough of a clear head to act while almost drowning so as to escape the tank, and was even given several minutes in which he might recover. Sure, he gets dragged over and dunked, and is more forcibly drowned, but this drowning is interrupted for a villain monologue! In any other super hero story, this would be the point where he recovers. It's kind of absurd that he doesn't. If the filmmakers wanted to kill him off, I think they shouldn't have forced the villain monologue into this scene and just let him die in a quick and shocking manner, being drowned by a SWAT officer with a clover tattoo. I haven't been able to take much positive away from this except that it subverts the idea that villains can't get away with having a final monologue explaining their plan to the hero before attempting to finish off the hero? I like that reveal that she was part of this secret organization all along, as that clears up a bunch of issues I had been having up to this point, but that reveal could have been kept for Mr Glass alone. I guess, with David, it helps clarify that she truly wanted to peacefully "rehabilitate" David, making her a little more likable, but the film ultimately paints her as a villain and a failure.
      3) We're getting a big ol super hero universe like Marvel, DC, and the others, but in this grittier, somewhat more-grounded style where we can expect Shyamalan's twists at the end of each film. Seems exciting. Split sets this up, and, in this film, Mr. Glass achieves his goal of getting the word out to the world. Oh, but the director really doesn't want to continue expanding this super hero universe; we've killed off all our compelling characters and neglected to directly introduce any more super powered individuals that could carry the franchise forward. No post-credit scene. No direct demonstration of characters pushing past their limits after being inspired by Glass' final message. I get that this must be what the director wanted, and it fits with the feeling of all three films, to a degree, but the audience is left only with an unoriginal message about embracing one's own exceptionality and pushing past limits while also being given the feeling that we'll never get to see how that message will reverberate throughout the heightened world of this film series.
      I think it's great the film avoided going into all the Marvel-like areas it hinted it might be going. I also think downer endings can be good. It just seems this one didn't hit hard enough in David's death and tried for an upbeat ending while subverting those Marvel-esque expectations but didn't end in a way that was upbeat enough.

      @@Haze01Smash Some very well thought out insights. I'm impressed that this film has stuck with me for so long, and I like it more and more as time passes. I think it's problem is that we're led to believe this is a film with three protagonists, and that it is about each of them equally. However, the reality is that this is Elijah's movie (the movie is called Glass after all). As his film, the ending, I believe, is quite satisfying. The problem is that Elijah doesn't take on a central role until the latter ~1/3 of the film. On the other hand, David isn't given much of a character arc and he dies very anti-climactically--This is despite the fact that he received a fair amount of screen time. I actually found Kevin's story the most satisfying because he had a decent character arc, he was present throughout the film, and his death seemed meaningful. Again, however, focus shifts to Elijah and his machinations. Ultimately, we're left not really knowing who to cheer for or how to really feel. That is, the ending (which was about Elijah) didn't match up with the beginning and middle. If the movie was really about Elijah, then he should have played a more active role early on; he should have been more present.
      The ending makes sense thematically, including the all three of them dying rather unceremoniously, but in my opinion it would have only felt satisfying if Elijah had been established as the main character early on--probably starting with the second act.

    • @reth2834
      @reth2834 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Noah Heninger I'm not sure Kevin's death was very meaningful -- Kevin was literally activated through trauma, i.e. we only know he's back to his normal level as he had always been and no longer weirdly suppressed. And Kevin being able to hold the light for ~1min doesn't say much, he literally did that before. esp. when you can reasonably expect his non-native personalities to be weakened near death.

      @@Haze01Smash
      1) Completely agree. The fact they turned it from a standard superhero cliche climax into a realistic grounded mundane ending. I'd go even further, the fact that Glass and Beast waited David outside is proof that it was Glass' intention to have that be the climax. He never cared about going to the building and killing a bunch of people, he just wanted to have a way to get David and Beast fighting outside and prove everything they were doing, which obviously is what the ending tells us, but I really like how much Glass' plan was thought-out, even David's son spoiling Kevin's dad twist. I thought about the possibilities to the climax and it got me to 3 options: a) at the institution since they were already there (which is what they ended up going with); b) they fell down a cliff and ended up somewhere like the ocean so David could drown with no ways of survival; c) at a train station so the Beast had to face their weakness (train lights) and dying at the place they were born at. At the end, even if they could've given any of these symbolic endings to these characters, I feel like that would've been... too perfect. David dying as a hero, Glass dying as a villain and Kevin dying as a monster. As cool as that would've been, it wouldn't have carried the weight and the whole point of the story, which is a real and sad story of unique individuals that went through terrible experiences trying to find a purpose for themselves. I believe Shyamalan really wanted to get rid off any doubt that this was his intention all along.
      2) I agree that Shyamalan exaggerated with the villain monologue, but I guess he really wanted to twist her image, where all this time she seemed like she wanted to do her best to rehabilitate these people into the world, when in reality her work was to strip them from everything that made them special, because people are scared of them for that. The same with David, I really liked how the movie kind of focused on this depiction that he's really old and tired but he can definitely do a lot of work when he wants to, but I feel like there wasn't much they could do more with him, not just because Bruce Willis is old lol, but also because in the end his character is just a guy that is virtually indestructible. Why couldn't his son rescue him after he got drowned? Because THAT'S the negative of being indestructible, in order to do chest compressions so the water comes out, the body needs to be able to accept that pressure from outside. How do you press water out of a metal containment with your bare hands? You can't. That's one of the problems with his power, he can't be saved.
      3) We don't actually know if this is a cinematic universe yet. If Shyamalan is going to make a new story, since this one is done and closed, is unclear. Glass says "this isn't a limited edition, this is an origin story", we don't really know what could come after this, but there's definitely extra room for it. From universes like Marvel, that we've already seen everything they could with it so far, and DC, that still trying to figure out what they can do, this is one universe that is out longer than both of those and still has lots of mileage as it's barely got started. From Glass' ending, they could make dozens of new characters to make up new stories.

      Kevin never had control of the light, only capable of showing up when called by his full name. The only time he actually got to finally have that was at his death, where this time he's not trying to hold it for himself, he actually shares it with others at their last minute together. He even says as he's dying he'll hold it for a little longer, to share that final moment with Casey, who had the chance to do that at the end of Split but chose not to because she knows Kevin isn't the same as the Beast or the other personalities, he's just a tragic victim like her and unfortunately couldn't make it this time.

    Dunn was able to Bench press 495 lb. And that's only where he stopped so it's safe to believe he could lift more than that. Consistency is key in any set of stories. Water seems to affect him differently in this movie than it does in unbreakable. In unbreakable he was fully submerged in a pool trapped in the pool cover as well. He was helped out and took a small moment to regain his composure and was back at it. Suffice to say even with a little bit of water in his lungs he does not turn into a vegetable. He definitely would have been able to handle one man holding his head down into a puddle. His arms and legs were free. It was established in unbreakable that water is his weakness because he can only die by drowning. Water did not make him lose his powers and become weak but that's seemingly present now? It's kind of like playing a game with a 4-year-old who just makes up random rules as the game goes on to suit their needs. It's a waste of time and a waste of film and a waste of great potential. Ill have to disagree with a fair bit of this, the point about Casey only being to drive the plot most of all. In spite of all the trauma that occurred during Split, it was this experience that ultimately gave her the courage to stand up to the life long abuse of her Uncle. Kevin was very relatable to her as a fellow victim of abuse and even the most violent twisted form of this abuse, The Beast, saw her as strong and having value. Her entire character is clearly changed for the better as a result....the clothing she wears, not hiding behind her hair, walking with confidence, connections to foster siblings...she even wears the jacket from the Zoo. And thats not even mentioning being rid of the various forms of physical and psychological abuse she is now rid of. She is better for having met and known Kevin. I would even go so far as to argue that of the 3 support characters, hers makes the most sense.

    That’s not a critique. That’s the movie making you experience something you didn’t want to. That doesn’t make the film bad. What makes the film bad is if that reaction it gave you didn’t work to illustrate the point the narrative is trying to make. And, based on what I’ve seen from people, it would seem it accomplished EXACTLY what it intended to on that front. It’s just that people don’t like its grim intentions. Too bad. Judge the movie for what it was trying to do. Tell me how it did THAT poorly (like Captain Midnight did). You’ll probably be able to come up with something substantive that way. A random guy appears on screen and drowns David in a puddle of water... Like seriously?.. Could've killed him off a million better ways.. It's like M. Night took a shit on his own movie, Unbreakable.. Idiot.

      And what was the purpose of killing him? I don't mind a character death if it has a meaningful impact but here it seems he just killed them for the sake of it (Mr. Glass was the only good death imo). Remember TLJ when Luke dies for no reason? Kinda like that.

      I don't get the arc about Kevin's death (seriously Kevin was reactivated via the trauma that's a deeply implanted backdoor hack? That's extremely insulting to the characters and does not add to them, unless it's saying they aren't superheroes and Kevin hasn't grown very much after all, or it's brushing up to the indefensible justification of "such is life". Kevin being able to be triggered is just the *norm*, and him being suppressed was extraordinary instead. His being able to hold the light for ~2mins doesn't prove anything objectively, and could also result from other personalities (non-native ones especially) simply being weakened near death. How about if Casey just said Kevin instead?), or the hilariously counterproductive plan of making two non-flying superheros fight without involving too much ordinary stuff supposedly a mastermind would concoct.

    they definitely shouldve handled the twist better, sort of set it up, something as little as making us doubt the legitimacy of Dr. whatever's actions. the whole movie she's like "I study this x disorder" and everyone is like "oh, cool, ok" so you just believe it, sure she's just a doctor. there isn't even an allusion to the clover tattoo thing until literally the end, again, nothing makes you question the procedence of this "doctor." So when the twist happens you're just there like "wat where is this coming from." makes it feel like they came up with the twist once they started writing the 3rd act. which is not true I'm sure, but for the audience there's nothing to disprove that

    • @Haze01Smash
      @Haze01Smash 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that it was odd for the principal characters to not question her legitimacy earlier, but feel the audience was given plenty to doubt her.
      While the characters don't really question her authority until the third act, they do have dialogue questioning her before her ultimate reveal. Aside from that minor correction, I agree it was odd they didn't fight her or question her more earlier.
      From the audience perspective, though, I felt there was plenty off about how she was presenting herself and about how she and those around her were treating her prisoners. There was so much off about it that I was forming mental lists of plot holes and oddities until that reveal.
      Why does she claim to specialize in this super hero disorder and yet also claim to only know of these three patients? How does she command so many resources to create such specialized confinement cells in such short a time? How can she get away with putting a heroic, well-liked, vigilante into a torturous form of solitary confinement despite him submitting to and cooperating with authority? Why aren't there more guards and staff around to help contain these potential threats? Why don't they let David prove aspects of his abilities through demonstration and scientific study?
      When they revealed her affiliation with that secret organization, these unbelievable aspects were immediately resolved in my mind. Secrecy, wealth, and her true motives all answer those questions.

    The problem was the climax. That's it. The rest of the film was good. My main issue to the movie was the way that they died. We are told water is bruce willis' character's weakness, yet not even 5 minutes before he is drowned in a puddle, he breaks open the water tank they were completely submerged in. Yet he cant lift his head more than an inch off the ground with SUPER POWERS against what is assumed to be a normal guy.

    • @lldarkanimell
      @lldarkanimell 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Like what superhero weaknesses do, they DRAIN their powers, just cause water is present doesn't mean it would shutdown his powers. Like how superman can still do some crazy stuff before passing out from kryptonite exposure. Dunn used his remaining strength just from escaping the water tank, soon as the battle was over, adrenaline should've went down and his strength already seeped out from all the exposure of water.

WATER!!!! How did he shower/take a bath without instantly dying?!?!

      @@jeebuschristos8423 thats the fucking problem, its not that water is his weakness like it was acid or venom, he is scared of DROWNING

    • @Haze01Smash
      @Haze01Smash 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I felt as though this film was hinting David's weakness to water might be no more than what any normal man would experience. They talk about it sapping his strength as though it's having a supernatural effect, like Kryptonite, but with the films' themes on limiting self-beliefs, I thought they'd show that was merely a flawed belief David held.
      We've seen the character nearly drown during his first outing as a vigilante in Unbreakable, only to rise and fight shortly after. In Glass, we see him nearly drowned while in captivity (without enough really shown to explain why) and his rain coat is given greater emphasis, and these are two elements that support the Kryptonite idea, but David shows strength and clarity of mind while fully submerged during the fight with The Beast.
      He may have inhaled more water before finally breaking out of the tank, there, but he was given time after escaping in which it seemed he should have recovered. Even after being dragged over to the puddle and having been shoved in it for a bit, they pull him out so a villain can monologue. During this, David is conscious enough to follow what she's saying and hold eye contact, so, following both the super hero tropes and some of the film's own theming, we expect this would be the time where he summons his strength and stops his drowning. It's then particularly unsatisfying that he doesn't.
      I agree with another commentator here that said it would have been more satisfying if the person drowning David did so quickly, cruelly, suddenly, without that woman talking to him.

    Some of the issues I have with GLASS is the sudden reveal of some secret organization, and the deaths of David Dunn and Kevin Wendell Crumb.
    The Movies climax could have instead have been done in a way were David battles The Horde and wins, defeating but NOT killing Kevin.
    During the battle Elijah Price would reveal his true plan ( like in the ending) where by he shows the world that Super-powered Humans exist, proving the The Doctor and all other skeptical people wrong (The doctor is not revealed to be part of some secret organization, but just someone trying to discredit Super-powered Humans).
    The secret organization is cut
    Kevin Wendell Crumb still kills Elijah
    (The twist where it is revealed that Elijah killed Kevins Father makes sense)
    Elijah dies by his own actions and dies with deep fulfillment, satisfaction, and Bliss in his mind dieing in the arms of his mother.
    David Dunn LIVES fully taking on his Super-powered abilities and becomes a Hero in the eyes of many, with a satisfying character arc.
    Kevin Wendell Crumb SURVIVES the movie, after the battle he is taken to an Asylum were he will learn to eventually Control

    Mr. Pritchard
    The Beast
    With the help of Casey Cooke, where by there bond will grow and perhaps hint that Casey herself holds a Super-powered ability that involves compassion, love, and Empathy.

    M Night Shyamalan needs to stick to horror movies. Unbreakable could have been way better if he didn't basically make Bruce Willis play the same character he played in I See Dead People. He also screwed up the Last Air Bender by removing all light heartedness from all the characters. The TV show was an action comedy for God sake and his plans for the sequel was to make it more darker WTF. Now if I want to understand glass I have to watch another flop he made that I literally never heard of before this video buts basically another wannabe horror movie that's not supposed to be a horror movie.

    As a huge 'Unbreakable' fan (I was 29 when it came out), when my younger brother told me that 'Split' tied into 'That movie you like', I knew he was referring to Unbreakable before he said anything else. I was more interested in finding that out than I had been for anything film-related in a long time. AS such a big fan of that film however, what was done to and with David however, obliterated any appreciation I had for 'Glass'.
    It wasn't a complete failure, it did have some interesting things going on, it did allow Jackson to perform, but it was, at the end of the day, a failure. A 'Well that was Meh' failure, on the level of how Dunn was taken out. If I was more interested in 'getting back' at feeling let down (Which I don't), I would imagine the ending credit-addition of Glass showing how the Great Big End Reveal was nullified almost immediately, being dismissed as a 'Special-Effects Reel', set up by that Secret Society. Simply BECAUSE the ending was so shrug-worthy.

    * NO * my dude
    You missed the fact that this movie could have worked without the context of the previous films
    I've seen the movie without seeing the previous films and it was GOLD
    The film works perfectly without them thinking about it, the film is presented to 3 different characters that has never before been seen in a harsh reality where vigilantes and monsters are threatened as psychopaths . Nobody knows anything about the 3 characters and the film does not wants you to do it either. The movie only offers some flashbacks to the crowd for the story itself.
    The girl in the division reminds me of Harly queen in the way they both have been mistreated and tortured in different ways, like a R-rated version of The Joker's relation, abusive behavior. The secret illuminaty group that tries to cover all the monsters is not so crazy when the movie plays with the origin of the comics, everything you see in the comics has been seen before and that is such a crazy theory if you look for some data of the history of comics. I would like to continue explaining but I have recovery exams. I would like to hear your opinion about it also sorry for the english
    In summmary i dont think Glass Failed as a stand alone movie but it may have failed a cinematic universe .

    The main problem with Glass (beyond the wooden dialogue) is that it's 15 years too late. Unbreakable worked, because it was a realistic twist on the superhero genre, a film that wrapped that theme in more than just fancy action scenes. It was refreshing after the streak of super bad to mediocre comic book movies of the 90s.
    That landscape has changed tremendously. At this point we got Nolan's Batman films, MCU (even if not every movie deserves to be called grounded, there's an argument for that in The Winter Soldier and Civil War alone) or Logan. All of which beat Shyamalan's writing by a mile.

  • @GarfieldRex

    The movie failed because the main characters died. Maybe Mr. Glass was destined to die, but Kevin and David??? How can a movie universe have no the main characters? How can they be replaced if cannot appear later to create the others? How the secret society managed to overcome the Police and get the characters out of the system? Casey, how can you explain that? We need to know how she thinks now. How does a secret society fill the void left by the death of our characters? Lame, lame writing. Some Deus Vult reviving some characters would be even better.... Because we as humans do like happy endings. Is natural, is our nature to want to feel good and happy. Happy ending is a good ending. Crappy ending... Does not make it interesting. Even if there was a sequel, would still be a bad ending. Is like having the Avengers 4 without the main avengers.... This Glass ending, all dead, and a little society that got in scene from nothing...

    • @SasuKrow
      @SasuKrow 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not really a crappy ending though. More of a bittersweet one and many good movies have a similar type of ending. Sure they died, but the cause, the idea lived on and everything they did still left its mark. Not having a cliche happy ending doesn't mean the ending wasn't meaningful. Not only did it send a message to the world but in the sense of the personal drama the supers had a major psychological impact on the people close to them.

      I agree that killing off all three of the film's most-interesting characters has pushed any chances of continuing this cinematic universe out of possibility. I left the theatre thinking that I now wouldn't want any further sequels, which would theoretically need to create completely new super heroes and villains. Such a film could, perhaps, link with the existing stories by having David's son trying to connect with the new heroes and featuring the clover group as an antagonist... but I don't think that would be terribly compelling.
      So, viewing Glass as the conclusion of M Night Shyamalan's super hero cinematic universe, I feel the ending is in line with the series' other subversions of audience expectations. In some ways it fits with the more-grounded take on super powers.
      I see the conclusion as the third disappointment. These films sort-of set up these feelings that they should be leading to a typical, unending, super hero franchise. Glass sets up the audience to want to see a high-profile super battle at the tower, but thankfully concludes on a smaller scale in a more dramatic fashion. I felt that David would surely survive, partially due to an assumption of his having plot armor and partly due to not believing David could not save himself in those last moments. On that latter point, I think it is fair to dismiss the idea that water is some kind of supernatural weakness of David's but that the threat of him drowning is just as real as for any other man... and so, any talk of exposure to water draining his power might be seen as some false belief in his head that we might expect him to overcome, especially in a film that once again strongly deals with the theme of characters' internal beliefs regarding their limitations. I see that as the ending's second disappointment. Finally, Split and Glass set up the possibility of creating this large and unending super hero universe, with Mr. Glass' ultimate plan being to create that reality. The character is even successful in the end, but by ending the film with that success while doing nothing to endear the audience to new characters that could carry that new universe, the message is sent that the filmic universe is ending. The audience is left only with a generic message about allowing oneself to be exceptional while this third set-up for cathartic entertainment is dashed.
      So I very much feel the director did not want to create another competitor to these big, ongoing, cinematic universes. I think these films were successful in setting up similarities to those series and was successful in subverting the expectations that set up in jts audience. It's just unpleasant how it ended with several feelings of disappointment and dissatisfaction.

    Hopefully one day there can be a re-release of Split, where you can choose a version without the end Bruce Willis scene :/

    Glass in my opinion, didn’t blend Split or Unbreakable at all. The two movies were made as separate stories that tied together. This story, was about Glass, a third story that tied in with the other two, not a direct sequel. Glass was trying to prove he would create super heroes and villains, by doing what he was doing, he revealed the secret society, which was the main antagonist and created David Dunn and the Horde, the two main superhumans. By showing the abilities and deaths of the superhumans, he defeats the secret society and proves his point, because by releasing that info, he undoubtedly created and emboldens more heroes

    One time my cousin Walter got this cat stuck up his ass. True story. He bought it at our local mall, so the whole fiasco wound up on the news. It was embarrasing for my relatives and all, but next week, he did it again. Different cat, same results, complete with another trip to the emergency room. So, I run into him a week later in the mall and he's buying another cat. And I says to him, "Jesus, Walt! What are you doing? You know you're just gonna get this cat stuck up your ass too. Why don't you knock it off?" And he said to me, "Brodie, how the hell else am I supposed to get the gerbil out?" My cousin was a weird guy.
