With a game like Mortal Kombat which was hyped up soooo much because of the blood and gore, when it doesn't have it then the game is flawed. That''s the reason Mortal Kombat became so big. Blood did affect the gameplay because the Fatalities were changed. Fatalities we're like adding an extra insult to your opponent. Not having proper fatalities doesn't give you the full Mortal Kombat experience.
The Sega cd version is even better, it has the blood, all the fatalities with no code needed, better music then the Genesis version, and even the Pit has more gory detail.
3 out of 8 were the same (Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sonya) , 2 were actually cool replacements ( Sub's and especially Rayden's) but we did lose out on the spineripper and the headpopper. And who gives a shit about Kano, really? But it was not as bad as you make it. And the menacing sound and visuals made them almost as good imho.
The fact you even compared MK's blood knowing the Genesis version didn't have blood without a cheat. Comparing a game with a cheat code isn't really fair. That said, SNES had better fatalities without blood. Also, the genesis did have the actual endings and the option for blood, so presentation would have been the best on Sega despite how ugly the game is.
The SNES version also has more frames of animation, greater detail in the stages and the correct fighting pose for Sub Zero. On the other hand it has pretty laggy controls. The areas where it falls down are so important and fundamental to the game that the areas where it is better become almost irrelevant. The Genesis version, while inferior in graphics and presentation, better represents the experience of the arcade game due to its tighter controls and ability to enable blood and fatalities (which pretty much define Mortal Kombat). Speaking of controls, I'm surprised there was no mention of the six button controller. I know it didn't come with the console, but it existed and I consider it an essential purchase for some games (especially fighting games). At the end of the day, the Genesis version gets it right where it counts and offers the better Mortal Kombat experience.
I agree with your statement - although, to be fair, the SNES often sounded better when and where orchestral instrumentation was required. On the whole, though, the Mega Drive's synthesiser was often on a par with the SNES, and sometimes superior to it. Which, when you think about it, is pretty impressive given the Mega Drive was released in 1988 and managed to compete with - and compare to - the much newer SNES (released a full two years later, in 1990) for as long as it did.
You guys should have pointed out the input lag on the Super NES version, essentially making Mortal Kombat unplayable and the fatalities impossible to pull off. Sega Genesis wins gameplay based on that alone, plus it has the better music in my opinion.
I love this series but what neither of them mentioned was the Genesis port of MK just plays so much smoother and more like the arcade. You take away the blood from both games and sure the Genesis games lacks the voice overs but it just plays way better. The SNES version is laggy as hell. I mean if you've played the arcade version and then played the Genesis version it sucks but fine. It's Sega. Then you play the SNES version and wtf happened? Why does it feel like I'm playing a 60fps game in 30fps with lag? It sucked. It wasn't just the lack of blood.
That's no lie. The SNES version does suffer from terrible lag, and with no blood or original fatalities on SNES, The Genesis version is the winner by far.
Also tje hit detection was way off on SNES. You could sweep people from several feet away. And could jump kick them before even fully hitting them. Such a buggy and glitchy game the SNES version was.
The Megadrive music is WAY better! I can't believe you guys think the SNES stuff sounds good! It's terrible samples have nothing on the clear, smooth synth.
I completely disagree the SNES’s music sounds muffled and almost muted, the Genesis’s music is louder and if anything sounds more groovy than the Nintendo does
I agree with that. However, the sound effects are better on the SNES. This isn't me being a Nintendo fanboy either, I grew up with a Genesis. This is just me trying to be objective. But you are right, the music is much more catchy and I would argue that it's more memorable than the Arcade music.
Super late to this party but another reason why the Genesis version is better, which wasn’t mentioned here, is control latency. The Genesis game feels like the arcade while the SNES version has severe input lag (even for the time) that makes the game feel sluggish and stiff by comparison.
That's the real reason I think Sega was better. Just blood and fatalities are not enough to beat the graphics and especially, the sound, but the gameplay mechanics for SNES were rather off, even in the Test Your Might sections. Super Nintendo became real easy when jump kicking, because you kick and jump at the same time and your character becomes a flying missile that glitches the CPU into being hit. All Flawless Victories (almost) Still, unlike Streetfighter, the SNES music for Mortal Kombat was a lot better than the arcade version. Not too common a feat there
You can pause between fights on Sega, when the next fight comes up just leave it alone and it will stay on there until you press or A or start. I've tested this on my beer drinking nights when playing it, got up, got my next beer, and sat down to begin my next fight. Even my next door neighbor who was a Nintendo kid came over to play this on my Sega cause his parents didn't want to buy him any violent games. Luckily my parents weren't strict anything.
Yes and No (but in interesting way) . Actually that is true, but playing the game more over time (i don't have it anymore/haven't had it last since 2009) I realized myself, that eventually after more than half hr, at least half an hr or little bit before actual hr (or just a whole hour period) it exits your existing game that was being played.
@@maverickhunterstupidiocy7779 why would you do that?!!... really? You could just finish the fight, or just wait and do your stuff and then press a button to continue your new fight.. why would anybody want to interrupt a fight?!
Gabriel Martinez I’m probably at high risk of getting wooshed, but pausing is rather instrumental to gaming. If you just stop, put the controller down without pausing, you’re going to get destroyed.
I am shocked they didn't just mention the gitchy controller on the SNES but also the fact that you could beat the majority of the opponents in the game with just one move! You could foot sweep characters from literally half way across the screen and beat them by constantly doing that same move over and over again lol! Also u could just low or high punch them 2 death if you ever cornered them. The enemies on the Genesis version were a bit more challenging and actually had some intelligence!
The Genesis presentation is actually closer to arcade. The Character bios while not animated are present. Goro's portrait and even the main menu with the character pics on left and right scrolling. This was key, but man those snes graphics and animation were jaw dropping back then.
the point of our videos isnt really who wins. the point is to present the same or similar games and show you the differences in a way that hopefully entertains a bit. the winner is just our opinion after playing both games. sorry our opinion doesnt match yours. and yes weve seen the nerds videos but were trying something a bit different. he makes vids his way and well make ours our way.
I'm really liking your videos. I feel like you guys could be onto something big with this series, as it's decently funny, entertaining, and without bias. For this video, I would have liked it if you could have pointed out that the gameplay in the Super NES version has a small (big) issue. Projectile fights. For instance, if Scorpion throws a spear, and then Sub Zero throws a freeze in response, Sub Zero will get hit with the spear, and the freeze ball will disappear.
Plus, music on Mortal Kombat is scratchy on the snes, listen to 6:37 as an example And, 7:40 is really irritating, I don't even understand what he's saying.
You guys have been at this console wars for a long time. Glad you have stuck with it. You guys deserve more subscribers just for the quality cheesy acting alone.
Being a SNES fan growing up, I was lucky enough to have a friend who owned the MK games on Genesis. Looking back (considering that now, I own both consoles lol), I will say that regardless of the outcome, both games were highly popular and enjoyed by tons of people. Whether I went to my friends house and played MK1 or MKII, or he came over and played MK1 or 3, we both played them equally. We both knew their pros and cons, and enjoyed both console versions as much as the other. I think that is what is missing from the context of this game at the time. It was huge, and the ability to play an arcade game like Mortal Kombat on a home console was mind blowing to kids, let alone anyone who likes arcade games. Both games I remember being top sellers of the time and enjoyed by many people. I also think that the confusion of there possibly being a blood/nudity code for the SNES kept the SNES version selling long after it came out. People would be arguing about which one was better, and one person would say 'blood' this, and 'color' that...fun time to be alive. Just wanted to say that in the end...at the time of this game coming out (mortal monday), both games were heavily enjoyed by both sides of the coin. No one gave a shit really about which console they were playing it on. Just the fact that they could play it with a friend on a home console for say, a sleepover was fucking amazing. P.S. I also want to add that there were families that bought this game on SNES because of the version NOT having blood/fatalities, and I lived in one of them. So it did hold it's water to some degree at the time. I also knew a few friends who had the same predicament. I'd just go over to a friends house to enjoy the blood and fatalities on his Sega haha!
I still find it awkward that Jean Claude Van Damme turned down the role of Johnny Cage (his inspiration) in the 1995 film for the role of Guile in 1994's "Street Fighter".
ShotokanEditor Sega has eight buttons two if you count the mode button on the top right-hand corner of the six-button.
6 ปีที่แล้ว +1
because when this game was popuar that 6 button pad was veyr hard to find no internet t order things back then i never met a person who had a 6 button controller n early 90s
Were the people who made this aware that Genesis had a 6 button controller? Most genesis owners bought those controllers. Also....no comment on the horrible delayed controls for SNES?? Or the sluggish gameplay?
The SNES version actually doesn't have better gameplay. 2 words. Control. Lag. With the SNES version there is a clear delay between hitting a button and the action happing, about half a second to a second. This has screwed me over many times. The genesis version has more instantaneous control, therefore making it better.
I was born in '88. I was a little peewee in '92. I was used to playing Ninja Gaiden on NES prior to this game due to having older brothers. I remember referring to this game as "the big ninja game" due to how small the ninja was in Ninja Gaiden. I have adored this franchise my whole life as far as my memory goes. Great channel. Been watching it for years. It's cool see your early days.
I think Super Nintendo had better sound & overall graphics (minus the blood & gore), plus I think the control layout is better, + you didn't have to buy another (upgraded) controller like Sega Genesis. Sega Genesis has an overall higher level of violence as well as Arcade accurate bios & endings (minus when Shang Tsung is beaten, all the souls come out of him which Super Nintendo has). I think the main reason I like Super Nintendo version better is because I grew up on it. During my elementary school years, we were a Nintendo family even though I wanted a Sega Genesis (because of Sonic the Hedgehog back then). As of April 2012, I now have a Sega Genesis & I still have a Super Nintendo (though it's not the same 1 I had as a kid, it's a model 2). I have Mortal Kombat 1, Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat 3 & Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 on both consoles & all are extremely fun (even more fun than the Super Nintendo & Sega Genesis Street Fighter games, but I've always preferred Mortal Kombat over Street Fighter, no matter what). You guys should review Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat 3 & Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 in the future. I'm sure you guys won't be disappointed.
@bee boo Lets see here... I mostly grew up a Nintendo kid playing original Nintendo, Super Nintendo & eventually Game Boy (I played my Aunt's as a kid but I got 1 of my own for Christmas from my parents in 1995 at age 10). When I was in middle school, my Dad had us vote between PlayStation & Nintendo 64. I voted Nintendo 64 & lost, so we defected to PlayStation. High school was the point when we were with both PlayStation & Nintendo since I got a Game Boy Color for Christmas Freshman year & eventually a Game Boy Advance late Sophomore year but I got a PlayStation 2 for my Birthday from my older sister (who worked at K-Mart at the time) for my 16th Birthday in 2001. Then the Summer between Sophomore & Junior years, my younger sister got her own Nintendo GameCube (we got to play the 1 my older sister's boyfriend at the time had before that). Post high school however was different as in 2007 when my Grandpa gave me his model 2 Super Nintendo (which sat in his basement unused for sometime with some of our games we left there after our original 1 broke) when I started building up my classic collection but that was the same year we got Nintendo Wii. In 2009 & 2010, I had emulators on 1 of our past computers for original Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Game Boy & Game Boy Color (same emulator but Type #1 Game Boy games were still the monochrome yellow-green while while Type #2 & Type #3 Game Boy games were in full color) & Sega Genesis & Sega 32X. 2010 was the year we also got a PlayStation 3 & my older sister got herself an Xbox-360 which she was nice enough to let us use. In 2011, I saved money to buy my own car after the transmission on my 1st car died on me a year ealier, but I was still able to make small game purchases here & there at a locally owned & operated video game store chain. In 2012 after I got my tax refunds, I put about $80.00 of my state refund toward buying a used model 1 Sega Genesis along with Toy Story, this game, Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat 3 & Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. I wanted to have the actual consoles & games (across many platforms) so that if the computer that had the emulators eventually took a crap (which of course it did later on), I would have physical copies of many of the games I've played on the emulators. Lets just say the emulators were a try before I buy kind of thing, since not every game I played on an emulator made the cut & a physical copy made it into my personal collection. In 2014, I got the Sega CD version of this game at a local store & later that year, a model 2 Sega CD off of Amazon. 2015 was when I got a Sega 32X & its version of Mortal Kombat II. In short... Early years & elementary school = Nintendo Middle school = PlayStation High school = PlayStation & Nintendo After high school = Pretty much all out (really only Nintendo, Sega & PlayStation) & collections continue to be built up to this day with new additions coming to my collection.
@bee boo OK. Well the local video game store chain had been around since probably the mid 2000's & I never heard of it until 2010, but also didn't get a chance to visit 1 of the branches til 2011. I got my 2011 state tax refund & used some of it to buy a Sega Genesis at a freshly opened branch of said store in Spring, 2012. If you ask the price of the console... I paid about $25.00 for it.
@Rob Cook Model 2? Which came out 1st, Sega Genesis model 2 or Mortal Kombat 1 for Sega Genesis? I know the 3rd part made Sega Genesis 3 came with a 6 button controller.
If you only knew MasterLinkuei created a superior version of Mortal Kombat for the Mega Drive than both of these versions called Mortal Kombat Arcade Edition
100% agreement for this one. Even when Nintendo brought the blood back for MK2 & 3, the damage was done. The SNES version looked sharper and sounded better, but the controls were more responsive on Genesis plus blood makes all the difference in Mortal Kombat
Thanks! we try. The problem is with some much to cover and so little time we dont go over everything. We dont want to make the videos too long because theyre already long enough. projectiles seem to be another reason the sega game is better.
Now that my taste is alot more refined since when this came out (still love the video), i can say that both are pretty even, though sega still has the slight edge. The graphics still overall look better in snes, but there are a few problems. 1. The blood is replaced with "sweat". 2. The image is scrolled down. For example, there is that dark area below the lighter part of the floor in the courtyard level. That isn't there in the arcade version or ANY other version for that matter. Which means that's a part of the graphics you're probably not suppose to see; so that's weird. 3. The music on snes is very muffled, distorted, and pretty unpleasant to the ears. 4. The controls on snes are delayed, where the genesis version is pretty responsive.
Yeah I had both version of the game and the genesis version really played a lot more smooth. The super nes version felt like the characters had sticks up their behinds.
The genesis version had perfect graphics? Sub zero and scorpion share the same pose, and had less animation than the snes version, the only thing the snes port lacked was blood. Aside from that, the snes version was better graphically.
Nintendo really dropped the ball with this game. It should have easily been the better version. Instead they got outsold like 4-1 if I remember right. I still remember how much praise all the kids gave the sega version. I had a snes and I didn’t even want it. I ended up getting the second one when I realized that one wasn’t censored.
+Console Wars have you ever considered switching the teams just for one video, just for the fun. The SEGA guy to deffend a Nintendo game and Nintendo guy a Sega game.
Console Wars And by the way, it'd be great if u find some time to do some of these- Prince of Persia, Doom Trooppers, Jungle book, Lion king, Toy story. Keep the good work guys.
yeah but genesis version , need a code for blood and fatalites,, if you play mk genesis version with out blood code,, the game sucks, example subzero fatalitie is just an uppercut
the soundchip was always miles better than the snez chip. got that completely wrong. Sega's is far more smoother sounding whilst the snez one sounds way too driven. Sorry your totally wrong haha xD
I hated the look of the blood in the SEGA version, it was so unrealistic. The game genie code to turn the sweat red on the SNES was how I preferred it.
While the Snes version has slightly better graphics the Mega Drive totally wins. The music/speech sounds so muffled on Snes, on Mega Drive is so crystal clear.
Not the Voice FX. Hands down to SNES. The reason for the distortion is because FM is programmed, Sound sampling has lower bit rate but closer sampling to arcade. Neither version is superior, it's just different renditions of the music.
Yes. I like that you're keeping it decently succinct. The 10-15 time window is perfect and after watching every episode I am thoroughly impressed. : ) I am looking forward to more episodes. I especially like that it seems like you're playing the games on original hardware. I do hope in the future if a game on the Sega supports their 6 button controller that you'll use that too. : )
You guys totally missed that the genesis version doesn't go straight to a match. You have to press start for a match to begin, so you don't have to pause the game at all. It doesn't go straight to the match, unlike the snes version which must be paused, so genesis won on that too, especially since you missed the fact that by then a 6 button controller was made for the genesis exclusively for fighting games.
@Bruno CLEARLY you never played on an arcade machine.. Because it was the SAME layout as the MD controls, and sega's controls were smooth af compared to the awful bizarre layout of the snes and laggy unresponsive shitty controls.
@Bruno totally, look at the professional arcade sticks today same as the sega controllers layout, and to home players, controls are like the playstation..
The two MAJOR problems with the SNES version for me, is the delay when pressing buttons, and the lack of Blood. Blood can be fixed, sort of, with a simple Game Genie code that changes sweat to look like blood, but because there's less 'sweat' than there should be blood, you end up with there not being as much blood as there should be, and it only happening during certain moves. Also, aside from character sprites being bigger, notice the Sub Zero standing sprite on each one is different. SNES gives Sub Zero his own set of standing sprites based on the Arcade version. Genesis Sub Zero is just a recolor of Scorpion's sprite. I however, have to disagree with your assessment of Sega having better graphics. While Mortal Kombat not having blood is weird, that doesn't change the fact that almost every other aspect of the graphics is better on SNES. 90% of the graphics on SNES are better, but because Gen has blood, it wins? No, I disagree. Despite most things being better on SNES though. I have to admit, Sega's Mortal Kombat is better. The delay with the SNES controls makes the game annoying as hell to play. The Genesis version doesn't have the delay. It makes it a much more enjoyable experience.
txfnero you have the point there and besides ,, sega genesis version with out blood code ,, fatalities are worse than snes , check sega version i.ytimg.com/vi/xU__4m5wGtE/maxresdefault.jpg and now snes version upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/22/Mortal_Kombat.png and besides sega genesis sound was very poor i found a pirate snes room with blood jaj was funny but fatalities was the same
The lack of blood on Super Nintendo doesn't matter. Mortal Kombat didn't get played for its gore but for its fluid, finetuned gamp... no, it was definintely the gore.
+Schwarzer Ritter We all know it was meant to be blood. Its like Nintendo got caught with something that wasn't for five year olds for once and had to sweep it under the rug but everyone was like. "Nope! We already saw you do it! We know you're hiding the fighting game that will birth the ESRB M rating under that rug." Meanwhile nintendo's like "Wah? No! No blood. Just sweat. Child friendly. You all children right?"
Yeah, the game was ass. Only dumb teenagers with no clue of what gameplay means would ever insert a coin in a MK machine instead of in a CE/HF/SSF2/ST one.
I believe the lack of gore was the least of the SNES versions problems. The laggy game play and suspect hit detection were much more serious problems. There was a fraction of a second input delay which ruined the game play, also it was possible to floor your opponents with sweep kicks even though they were clearly out of reach of the kicks - shady hit detection.
@@clarenceboddicker6679 You have to give it to Sega for the input detection. But then again, if you play the arcade version today, you can feel it's lag or lack of input for certain periods compared to MKII or 3. I can also agree with the hit detection, which was more of a downer for me. The AI was a bit dumb, too, but the graphics were definitely eye catching in comparison to the Genesis in terms of color vibrance and the Voice FX sounded really good on the SNES. I got used to the delay, I think it was due to the acceptable or confusion of what lag was back in the day compared to todays high frame rate expectancy. I can attest that I used that sweep strat on AI when it cheesed me lol.
***** The controls are god awful on the SNES!!! Yes there are more buttons, but then again most people own a 6-button controller for SEGA, and if your playing it on the Nomad then you will also have 6 buttons as well. But number of buttons aside the controls have so many glitches! You could corner some1 and an uppercut doesn't always work, u can foot sweep form 1/2 the distance of the screen, throws are very hard to pull off. It makes for a frustrating game, there is a couple of big MK fans on this site here that got vids about the frustrations of the SNES controller mechanics. Though it does still have some really great music and sound effects.
I had both back in the day and from what I remember the only thing I liked about the genesis version was the blood and the fact that it was more similar to the arcade version... sub zero had a totally different fatality on super Nintendo, he just froze you and broke you into pieces...
Raiden also has a different fatality in the SNES version too. Instead of having him just disintegrate his opponent’s head, he disintegrated him/her entirely into pieces.
16-bit console-wise, I would remap the button settings in the Super NES and Genesis versions of MK1. For the Super NES controller, I recommend L for block, R for run, Y for low punch, X for high punch, B for low kick and A for high kick. And for the 6-button Genesis controller, I recommend X for high punch, A for low punch, Y for run, B for block, Z for high kick and C for low kick. I do not recommend the Super NES version of MK1 because the Super NES version of MK1 is heavily censored. And by the way, the Sega Genesis 6-button arcade stick has the better button layout. The Super NES arcade sticks (Most of them) suck because they have the craziest button layouts.
I Have MK on Genesis, and Now, i just play the first 3 on my psp (Midway arcade treasures), and MK 4 (Ps1) on My PSP. Such a good handheld. Totally underrated. All the different console i cam play on it. -PSP (Obviously) -PS1 -Sega Genesis -Super Nintendo -Nintendo -Arcade Ports in some collection PSP Games -N64 (Maybe? IDK) -Master System (Maybe) -Game Gear (Maybe) -GameBoy -GameBoy Color -GameBoy Advance
damn you guys missed or skipped over one of the biggest difference 's of the two the time it takes.. lag of the snes to go to the fatalities vs the sega. the snes takes forever to go dark then do the fatality after you do the move on the controller vs the sega that almost has no lag like the original arcade .
Mortal Kombat without blood (on the Super Nintendo) is just like watch "Demolition Man" with the "F" word censored. And yes, the "F" word is used a lot by Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes in that movie!
9:20 ROFL! Who runs like that and makes those faces when getting a beer? 11:40 EPIC!! I wish candy would get knocked out of me when I got hit, but I'm a diabetic.
@bee boo yes it was, MD had a 6 button control by then and it was programmed to play as a 6 button or 3 button control.. 3 button was the default option when MD was released in 1988, when fighting games required more buttons sega upgraded its controllers to 6 buttons and became the default option from that point on...
I know this video is like a decade old, but how in the world did SNES win on music and sound quality? The Genesis clearly won in that side-by-side play off. (No I'm not trolling).
Yeah, if Nintendo did not force the developers to cut Blood away from the game (2:19 - 5:07), the Super Nintendo game would've been a whole lot better. Oh, Nintendo. You should never have pussied out there.
Yeah. The Snes version was almost unplayable. Sure it looked and sounded great but the control was so flawed that I felt it shouldn't have been released as is. The Genesis version played as good, if not better than the arcade. Sure it looked half assed on graphics and a lot of sounds were missing but just having true to the arcade fatalities and blood isn't the only reason it bested the snes version. MK2 however for the snes fixed the control problems that this one had and was the better port.
I think those in charge deliberately made it so that both consoles got their differences, so that people would buy and play both. That way everybody wins.
***** The boundaries for the console are always pushed after certain time has passed based on experience and knowing more about what can fit and can't fit. Like, look at the PS2 games of the year 2000 compared to the ones from 2006. Huge difference!
The main problem with snes version is not the blood, but the delay in the gameplay. The special moves are executed half a second after the commands, while in genesis the response is immediate. Visual and sound, however, are better in snes.
Controls: Are you kidding me? The SNES version suffers from noticable input lag, and the hitbox detection is questionable at times. The Genesis version plays far better. Graphics: Easy win for the SNES. Music: Very muffled in comparison to the clear Genesis version. And it doesn't sound as cool to me. It's a matter of opinion though. Voice clips: The Genesis version's voices are very grainy, whereas the SNES only suffers from slight compression (that's why it sounds sped up.)
I always thought that the graphics and music on the SNES version were amazing, but the input lag ruined the gameplay. And, yes, the lack of blood as well. The Genesis version is a really responsive game.
Um, FUCK NO Moviefan. I HAVE BOTH VERSIONS and have had both since day 1 (MORTAL MONDAY). SNES plays slower than the Genesis version, Music is not that much better than Genesis, input lag on the SNES version. The SNES version was shitty compared to the far superior Genesis one. Now if we talk MK II, the SNES version buries the Genesis version. But we are talking the first game and the first game fucking sucked major ass on the SNES.
@@alubaldini SNES Mortal Kombat 1 had the WORST delayed sluggish controls out of any Mortal Kombat ever... and it felt like it was in slow motion. Horrible port. Ed Boon even said the Genesis versions of Mortal Kombat were better. They played at the pace of the arcade. SNES versions were missing frames
@@nyastclair8174 jaja snes just have bad game play but graphics and sound SNES is superior genesis have too much missing details example shagtsung stage he is moving his head watching the fighters in the stage and he stand up when you wing a round while genesis he is like statue now check statues stage and compare SNES and genesis or pit stage genesis looks like paint animation or beat the final boos SNES and arcade he released souls genesis just die by the way try to play genesis version with out blood code ...but SNES just have horrible control but graphics and sound and fonts stage SNES is very superior than genesis
@@alubaldini I would trade graphics for gameplay any moment in a lifetime. SNES mortal kombats had horrible slow gameplay and delayed//unreliable controls. What good is graphics if the game plays like total shit?
The characters on the snes are not bigger! nobody sees this? They are the same size, The snes characters "stand" higher on the screen. Plus the life bars are thicker than the arcade and genesis versions, they also "hang" lower on the screen. All this contributes to the illusion of having bigger sprites. And last but not least, the genesis version characters have the correct arcade body proportions, the Snes characters look somewhat squashed, by a few pixels.
Dudes, I love your channel! Great entertainment! But this review is super forced! Haha! Bias-central towards the ole Genesis! The SNES MK is hands-down superior in graphics, colors, animation. That's an obvious category win for SNES. I laughed when I saw this! You rascals! ;) The Genesis version is super choppy--- and the colors and detail...not even a question. This is a case where you REALLY wanted to have the Genesis version win, but couldn't figure out how to do that with it "winning" just one category ("gameplay," in which most would agree with your assessment, but is certainly debatable.) SNES is the flat out winner in both audio and visual, graphics and presentation. Game play wise, you get a slightly slower version on the SNES but missing seemingly half of the animation frames on the Genesis. (Sub-Zero is a mere color-swap from Scorpion on the Genesis, too!) Anywho, I had to go on record! Ha ha! {Further anecdotal evidence: I remember when my good pal, the Genesis fan boy/apologist, had both an SNES and Genesis and was debating which version of MK to get on "Mortal Monday." I had read the review in Gamepro and told him how much better it was gonna look on SNES. He ended up getting the SNES version and was super glad he did!} Keep the videos coming, and don't forget: SNES is the 16-bit CHAMP! :)
You forgot to mention the Genesis controls feel more responsive, whereas the SNES version has delayed movements that makes playing a pain in the ass, especially when you get to the endurance matches. Because of that alone the Genesis port wins by default.
Not really a fan of how you guys evaluated the graphics. The SNES version had superior IQ, smoother animation, better color saturation, and larger sprites. Don't understand how you guys gave that to Genesis just because of blood? If anything, that should go under presentation, not graphics.
Eduardo Azrael snes you can figth with reptil ,, just wining double flawes victory and fataliti in pit stage ,any time while sega just when santa appears
Eduardo Azrael You're totally wrong. In fact, in genesis you MUST do the cheat codes to make the silhouettes appear on the moon in The Pit stage to make reptile appear. In snes you just do the regular arcade method (two flawless victory and a fatality on The Pit stage). I prefer the genesis version, but before I discovered the cheats code, I was very frustrated to follow the steps from arcade and never managed to make Reptile appear.
Your beds are next to each other?
It was *all* about the finishing moves.
The Genesis version having the blood doesn't really relate to the graphics, but rather the presentation, so I would've switched those two scores.
jakespidermonkey1994 thank you!! Same with fatality s
Genesis does what Nintendon't.

Making Mortal Kombat kid friendly on the SNES? REALLY?! It seemed awkward if you ask me. Maybe Sega deserves the win in this one.
Snes did that for other games too example final fight
It's people beating each other up to "the death", aka, *KILLING* each other. How is that kid friendly?
If a game with blood does not have blood thats not cool!!!SHAME ON YOU SNES!!!
Frick off lad
Well it was only the first one. There was blood in the other games
The no blood was the reason why it doesn't sell as much as the genesis versions... but the MK II solve this issue.
Yeah Nintendo learned quickly of how big that game franchise was and what it meant to be genuine in porting it to the SNES. :)
Facts
At the end of the day, the Genesis version gets it right where it counts and offers the better Mortal Kombat experience.
amazing
I like the music on Sega better for this game
^lol.
I think same for me. Sometimes more channels and/or instruments sounds busier rather than better.
Same, a lot of the new songs are better than the arcade songs
Man you guys are INCREDIBLY undrrated
Thanks!
hey Greg when you talked about music quality and Mortal Kombat character selection mode you made the song more badass
You're right. It was the control lag that really killed the snes version. It was practically unplayable.
Joshua Sanderson clear smooth synth on Genesis!?!Don t make laugh!!!
But you are right, the music is much more catchy and I would argue that it's more memorable than the Arcade music.
yes thats true
The SNES version sounds like the Arcade version
All Flawless Victories (almost)
Still, unlike Streetfighter, the SNES music for Mortal Kombat was a lot better than the arcade version. Not too common a feat there
Omg i thought i was the only one complaining about the frustrating controls on the snes version of mortal kombat
My favorite episode, i usually come back to re watch this from time to time
the console release for MK was in 1993 the 6 button controller for sega came out in 1993
it didn't cost extra if you bought the model 2 genesis
Does model 2 cost more than model 1?
You can pause between fights on Sega, when the next fight comes up just leave it alone and it will stay on there until you press or A or start. I've tested this on my beer drinking nights when playing it, got up, got my next beer, and sat down to begin my next fight. Even my next door neighbor who was a Nintendo kid came over to play this on my Sega cause his parents didn't want to buy him any violent games. Luckily my parents weren't strict anything.
That’s….. not pausing.
@@longtallshorty5791It kind of is?
About the point where Genesis cannot pause, it's incorrect. Before fights, the SEGA version doesn't go to the fight until you press the start button.
@@cjronetwentyseven2937 if you're taking a half your break in a game that doesnt even take that long to beat then you have issues.
it was pausing DURING fights, man.
I think the music in the Genesis version of Mortal Kombat is superior to the SNES AND the arcade.
You got that right.
Good one!
It is. I can still dream the intro tune
Matt Furniss for the win.
WRONG!
It's a trip watching this in 2022 for the first time. I mean that in the best way possible. Love the channel.
Glad you're catching up. There's 93 episodes for you to enjoy!
The Genesis version might look like crap, but it's BLOODY crap!
OH SNAP
The Genesis presentation is actually closer to arcade. The Character bios while not animated are present. Goro's portrait and even the main menu with the character pics on left and right scrolling. This was key, but man those snes graphics and animation were jaw dropping back then.
the sega 6 button controller has a way better d-pad and button layout than the snes controller.
hell yea
Playing MK2 with this makes it feel better than the SNES version. and I grew up with the Snes.
I'm actually ok with the SNES controllers it's fair in my opinion
the point of our videos isnt really who wins. the point is to present the same or similar games and show you the differences in a way that hopefully entertains a bit. the winner is just our opinion after playing both games. sorry our opinion doesnt match yours. and yes weve seen the nerds videos but were trying something a bit different. he makes vids his way and well make ours our way.
I'm know I'm very extremely late to this video (about 10 years), but I believe you can use the 6-button controller on the Genesis game.
I like the music quality on the Genesis because I love how creepy it sounds.
The deeper bass sound makes several of the songs sound better on Genesis than they do on SNES. Like the main title music.
Plus, music on Mortal Kombat is scratchy on the snes, listen to 6:37 as an example
And, 7:40 is really irritating, I don't even understand what he's saying.
I also love how cool the instruments were. The best I could describe them is 90’s techno and I’m all over it.
You guys have been at this console wars for a long time. Glad you have stuck with it. You guys deserve more subscribers just for the quality cheesy acting alone.

So weird to have a Console Wars episode without "THAT'S IT! ARE WE DOIN' THIS!?"
that’s because this episode was before that.
There should be Mortal Kombat 2 on SEGA GENESIS vs Mortal Kombat 2 on SUPER NINTENDO
and especially MK3
+LexMalin ;D
+L.S.A There's really not much of a contest there.
+Mike NA Yeah right
When Mortal Kombat 2 came out, Nintendo stopped fucking around and got their shit together.
I still find it awkward that Jean Claude Van Damme turned down the role of Johnny Cage (his inspiration) in the 1995 film for the role of Guile in 1994's "Street Fighter".
Honestly I always thought the music in the genesis version sounded even better than the arcade
I totally agree!
Terrible sound
Well the sound yes but the music very catchy

Uh, hellooo. Genesis has ABC XYZ controller. That's seven buttons (counting Start). Why did no one bring that up?
Aaron AJ Knight thank you!
ShotokanEditor Yeah, Because you had the useless Select button!
ShotokanEditor Sega has eight buttons two if you count the mode button on the top right-hand corner of the six-button.
because when this game was popuar that 6 button pad was veyr hard to find no internet t order things back then i never met a person who had a 6 button controller n early 90s
oliver closehoff six button controller was prominent around 93/94. All I'd played was MK2 and Super Street fighter 2 with the six button.
Agreed about the lag. But I was able to exploit it to my advantage.
But yes, the controls were messed up on the SNES.
Uh no. There is no control lag on the SNES console but the SNES Emulators do.
@@tskraj3190 You're 100% wrong. I've played the game on official hardware many times, and every time there is control lag
I didn't notice the lag on the SNES version in my opinion it felt like the arcade version
I like music in genesis too, and with 6 buttons gameplay goes to sega too
I was born in '88.
@bee boo
Lets see here...
In short...
Early years & elementary school = Nintendo
Middle school = PlayStation
High school = PlayStation & Nintendo
After high school = Pretty much all out (really only Nintendo, Sega & PlayStation) & collections continue to be built up to this day with new additions coming to my collection.
@bee boo OK.
@Rob Cook Model 2?
Agreed. That was the nail in the coffin for MK1.
Thanks! we try. The problem is with some much to cover and so little time we dont go over everything. We dont want to make the videos too long because theyre already long enough. projectiles seem to be another reason the sega game is better.
Now you gotta do the sequel!
In MK 1 on Genesis, you dont need to pause inbetween matches, just dont press any buttons and the match wont start
Somehow you guys forgot to mention the 6 button controller for Genesis on this episode.
You forgot to mention mortal kombat snes' input delay
So did the Arcade version.
I played the arcade version, its input delay is not as bad as the snes version
***** That's def an idea we had. Just gotta figure out the right game for it.

I completely agree with the outcome of this one. With out blood and fatalities the game just feels incomplete
yeah but genesis version , need a code for blood and fatalites,, if you play mk genesis version with out blood code,, the game sucks, example subzero fatalitie is just an uppercut
Yeah Nintendo really f@#%ked up when they made Mortal Kombat on SNES
alvaro u but the option to turn on the blood and fatalities was at least still there on the Genesis.
***** yes but blood with horrible sound and graphics.. sucks
@Rob Cook till nintendo fans knows this code jaja
the soundchip was always miles better than the snez chip. got that completely wrong.
Sega's is far more smoother sounding whilst the snez one sounds way too driven.
Sorry your totally wrong haha xD
well, the snes was better for orchestrated music while genesis is better for synthesis. IMO though I usually always like genesis over snes.
@bee boo This and the lack of sounds on the Genesis overall. If the genesis put all of the sounds on there, it would sound worse.
@bee boo I wasn't preaching to you, I was just agreeing with you.
@bee boo shut your little bitch hole.
that Speech about No Blood was so beautiful 😢
The music sounds better on the MD anyway but when the Snes music sounds distorted and muffled the sound has to go to the MD.
I am looking forward to more episodes.
@Bruno like your snes controllers?.. 😂😂😂🖕🏼🖕🏼
It makes it a much more enjoyable experience.
txfnero you have the point there and besides ,, sega genesis version with out blood code ,, fatalities are worse than snes , check sega version i.ytimg.com/vi/xU__4m5wGtE/maxresdefault.jpg
and now snes version
upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/22/Mortal_Kombat.png
and besides sega genesis sound was very poor i found a pirate snes room with blood jaj was funny but fatalities was the same
The lack of blood on Super Nintendo doesn't matter.
Mortal Kombat didn't get played for its gore but for its fluid, finetuned gamp... no, it was definintely the gore.
+Schwarzer Ritter Yeah! The SNES version have a delay of 1 second to make any move.
Funny how the 6 button sega controller made for fighting games did get even a mention
Mortal kombat without blood is not a mortal kombat, the winner is sega
no
***** The controls are god awful on the SNES!!!
SEGA WINNNNN
Fenix Rising flawless victory xD
SEGA WINS BLOOD BLOOD BLODD
SNES = CHILDREN
9:19 When Im in a multiplayer lobby between games and Im thirsty hahaha
I had both back in the day and from what I remember the only thing I liked about the genesis version was the blood and the fact that it was more similar to the arcade version...
sub zero had a totally different fatality on super Nintendo, he just froze you and broke you into pieces...
same with johnny-cage on snes version
Awesome video, really creative, by the way Genesis kicks Snes version!
I Have MK on Genesis, and Now, i just play the first 3 on my psp (Midway arcade treasures), and MK 4 (Ps1) on My PSP. Such a good handheld. Totally underrated. All the different console i cam play on it.
-PSP (Obviously)
-PS1
-Sega Genesis
-Super Nintendo
-Nintendo
-Arcade Ports in some collection PSP Games
-N64 (Maybe? IDK)
-Master System (Maybe)
-Game Gear (Maybe)
-GameBoy
-GameBoy Color
-GameBoy Advance
damn you guys missed or skipped over one of the biggest difference 's of the two the time it takes.. lag of the snes to go to the fatalities vs the sega. the snes takes forever to go dark then do the fatality after you do the move on the controller vs the sega that almost has no lag like the original arcade .
When I was a kid playing this game back in '92 I called the blood "sand" on snes lol I didnt know any better...
Maybe they might be tee-- wait a minute! Then the characters must have an infinite supply of teeth
Get over here! ----------😵>
Mortal Kombat without blood (on the Super Nintendo) is just like watch "Demolition Man" with the "F" word censored. And yes, the "F" word is used a lot by Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes in that movie!
sega's version is a thousand times better than snes
wrong snes didn't have blood sega's did therefore sega wins
snes fatalities are all pussies
lol whatever
lol

9:20 ROFL! Who runs like that and makes those faces when getting a beer?
11:40 EPIC!! I wish candy would get knocked out of me when I got hit, but I'm a diabetic.
also, you could always upgrade to the 6 button controller on the Sega.....
@Bruno obviosly if the snes came out 2 years after the MD Sherlock 🙄🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️
(No I'm not trolling).
th-cam.com/video/sB_utmCKODs/w-d-xo.html
Your definitely trolling
@@yayo4478*You're
Genesis version plays so much better
You should do a follow up to this, and compare the SNES and Genesis versions of Mortal Kombat II.
I agree. Might as well go all out and do Mortal Kombat 3 also, since it was on both systems too.
Just discovered your channel now. It' pretty good. :D
+Pixel “RETRO” Vision Thanks! This is an old video. I feel like we've gotten better since.
Console Wars Yep. Watching through your videos right now. :)
Music is better in SNES? Genesis music is amazing and better than Arcade
Gameplay, content and controls wise, the Genesis version is better.
Blood code: ABACABB
Don't forget: Down, Up, Left, Left, A, Right, Down.
@@feliscorax DULLARD
after watching the Mortal Kombat 3 episode, such a big change from then and now.. especially in the fights between you two lol
Wrong!!!!! Sound goes to Sega because the music alone is better.
phelpsboltusa 87, I agree it *should* go to Sega for the music, but it's not all about the music... unless it's a Disney movie.
Yeah, if Nintendo did not force the developers to cut Blood away from the game (2:19 - 5:07), the Super Nintendo game would've been a whole lot better.
Oh, Nintendo. You should never have pussied out there.
If the SNES version had the blood and fatalities, it would've mopped the floor with the otherwise craptacular Genesis version.
Don't forget slow down and input lag as well.
Huge difference!
seanmyster6 fucking fanboy
The main problem with snes version is not the blood, but the delay in the gameplay. The special moves are executed half a second after the commands, while in genesis the response is immediate. Visual and sound, however, are better in snes.
SNES: Great graphics, mediocre music, plays horribly.
Genesis: OK graphics, great music, plays like the arcade.
The controls, graphics, music, and voices were all better on the SNES version. The only reason it sold poorly was because of the censorship.
***** Exactly.
Super Nintendo Guy has a Sega Genesis controller in his hands at 11:08 :P
I think the best sound is the Sega Genesis
"no blood in a mortal kombat game" lol got me. Great video keep it up!!!!!
music in mk much better on genesis
only reason for sega is winner is for the blood graphics and sound snes is very superior
@@nyastclair8174 i prefert but controls than horrible graphics
The fight at the end with murmuring is hilarious
Wow u guys are like game sack but funnier
I bet these guys do better research as well.
Nintentard detected ⚠
You forgot to mention the Genesis controls feel more responsive, whereas the SNES version has delayed movements that makes playing a pain in the ass, especially when you get to the endurance matches. Because of that alone the Genesis port wins by default.
Not really a fan of how you guys evaluated the graphics. The SNES version had superior IQ, smoother animation, better color saturation, and larger sprites. Don't understand how you guys gave that to Genesis just because of blood? If anything, that should go under presentation, not graphics.
Im sad this was 9 years ago
We’ve came a long way
You forget to consider that Sega's version have the possibility to fight against Reptile, while Nintendo dosn't.
I prefer the genesis version, but before I discovered the cheats code, I was very frustrated to follow the steps from arcade and never managed to make Reptile appear.
protossevolution sega genesis is faster ,, and have blood but colours and sound sucks
Eduardo Azrael Sorry people. I based my comment on a review from a brazilian magazine and do not tried to see if it was true.
Eduardo Azrael yes it does, I've done it myself
