Hello Mama Brooke - In regard to the dandylions - Where I grew up in NJ we lived about a block away from The Duke estate (Doris Duke). I used to go with my Noni (grandmother) onto the property and cut the massive dandelions flowers and leaves. The Duke family never used pesticides. We would come home and clean the leaves and dry the flowers . We would make a huge salad (dandelion leaves, sautéed onions in merlot wine, prosciutto, genoa salami, Kalamata olives, oranges and strawberries with shaved parmesan cheese with olive oil, salt pepper and lemon juice) served with crusty italian bread. We would make tea with the dried flowers in the fall. My Noni & Nono lived with us while I was growing up. It was a nice reminder of dandelions.

My husband and I came up with a solution to keep the squirrels out of our garden. You will never beat the little buggers at their game. We decided to feed them. My husband built a little shelf and put it on the fence and each day we put out unsalted sunflower seeds, peanuts in the shell and any fruit or veg scraps we have. They love oranges. We haven’t had a problem in years.
Unfortunately, in the city of Toronto, we are not allowed to feed the animals. It is against the law. Yeah I don’t even go there. I think it’s stupid too.🤷🏼♀️🐿️🍃🌺

That bird that you were listening to near the end is a cardinal. They have several different sounds and that's one of them. I was listening to it and at the same time, a cardinal is singing the same tune outside my window.

Love your little robin. While moving plants in my tropical island I came across 2 worms and a cardinal came and got them. My 11 yr old grandson and I like to sit on the patio and write down each bird that comes up and we identify. Making memories is good for my heart. I love watching you cook and tend your gardens. To help the birds 🐦 not fly into windows there are window film stickers designed to give the birds a visual to place on the glass. It really works. It helps save birds from terrible injury or death. ❤

Hey Brooke. to get rid of squirrels I shave Irish Spring in yard. Also, to keep them out of pots, place bamboo skewers with sharp side up. They won't bother again.
Well, I can totally do that. Someone said mothballs and I know I can’t stomach the smell, but I could do that one. Thank you.
You might try Irish Spring bar soap to keep squirrels away from plants. I use potato peeler to make it into smaller pieces. On your upper deck, I find Thompsons water sealant to be great seal wood from weather. Just try a can to try it out. Also comes in gallon. Good on create items.... as benches ..etc hugs

Hi Brooke! I see someone has said the bird you asked about is a cardinal. I think it was a hummingbird. I've never heard a cardinal but I have hummingbirds on my patio all year round and that's exactly what they sound like. Interesting.

Use a few smears of Vick vapor rub on the rims of your pots to stop the squirrels from getting in your pots. It works great. My mom uses it every year because they tear up her pots on her second story balcony , no more, love u from st Louis mo

Hi Brooke , every evening Mr & MrsCardinal stop by the feeder , I make sure there is seed for them so they will keep coming ! Did you know Sparrows make a beautiful song !? I would love to make the spinach pie however my oven is not working could be the heating element thingy . just time to get a new one! The weather here is going to get into the 90s, I'm not sure what that would be in Canada , besides hot !! haha. The plans sure dry out fast !! keep cool Blessings Paula
Now we’re not allowed to feed the birds in China unfortunately we’re not allowed to feed any animals in the city limits of Toronto. It’s a bylaw. Don’t even ask me why I’m not. I don’t know. I can’t get it anyways. I fixed my own oven and it wasn’t element too. It was so easy to fix, better than buying a new stove you should look into it always have a great day🍃🌸❤️
Brooke your garden looks good even with the squirrel damage. I used to sprinkle chili powder or pepper in my pots to keep them from digging. The epsom salts did seem to stop the raccoon from digging in the ground where freshly planted flowers are. Your dinner and other foods always look wonderful. I love spinach anything😊. Hey love those pesky little things 🐿️🐿️🐿️ love to dig up plants and won’t stop no matter what.the only thing that worked for me was using shish kebab sticks I’ve used maybe 100 for each planter and they don’t bother them. They get the hint and don’t wanna get poked 🤷🏽♀️🤭you might wanna spary yours black too help blend in more 🫶🏽

To keep the squirrels from my impatiens I buy plastic dark grey forks from the dollar tree and put them into the ground around the flowers. If they are pushed down low enough in the ground they are hardly noticeable.

I've purposely done a bit more around the house as am fasting to keep my mind off food but haven't been hungry. You whip up the most delicious meals! I'm sure Leah thoroughly enjoyed her dinner. I wonder if you put out seed for the squirrels they might leave your plants alone. Our squirrels focus on the feeder so far.
Unfortunately, we’re not allowed to feed any animals in the city of Toronto because we have an epidemic so it against the law to give them any food. I can’t have a birdbath either… well actually I think I can but I gotta go apply for a permit pay for the permit and then them have come inspected all the time I can’t be bothered with all that it’s just control thing some people ruin it for everybody. It is what it is well I’m digging weeds I take worms For my Robin. And I have plum trees and cherry trees so they get lots to eat naturally. 🐿️🌸🍃🤷🏼♀️🦋🌺
Hi Brooke! I love the little half moon dresser you placed outside in the shade garden. What did you treat it with to make it weather proof?
You have inspired me to do something similar.
I don’t think it’s 100% waterproof but I did put a clearcoat on it. It’s wood so it’s definitely never gonna be waterproof but I didn’t pay anything for it and if I get a few years out of it, I’m happy with that it was found on the side of the road, I think I’ll add another coat to the top but so far it’s been working pretty good. Someone told me to do some wax on it. I might try that too.

Question what do the eggshells do for certain plants ? My mom always did it to .. always wondered . ❤
My eggshells are full of calcium so if you grind them up and add them to your soil it’s really good for the plants and if you put them around the bottom it stop the snails from eating your plants so there’s two uses for them.🌸🍃🦋
I’ve got a little pesky worm eating all my garden this year. He’s very small, yellow and has hair or thorny fuzz all over. Don’t have a clue where it came from
