      @Ginger Fishy I also grow it in a similar configuration using high quality air stones and gravel. The air stone quality really makes a huge difference.

    This stuff grows like nothing else! Got 2 bunches from my local farm shop and put them in the bog filter. It rooted within days. Couple of months later I have loads of it for salads.

    Great idea. I have a goldfish pond that I am regenerating and I'm looking to create as much filtration as possible. Can this watercress handle the UK Winter or does it die off?

    • @GingerFishyOfficial
      @GingerFishyOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it handles a UK winter well, it will even continue to grow a little throughout.. so is a great all year round natural filter 👍

    Brilliant!!! You have THE BEST ideas! I wish I had thought of this for my outdoor pond last yr, green water just took over. :( Moe, Tom & Jerry would love them some of that Duckweed to snack on! I keep some growing myself in a separate tank for 'supplementation' :) Thanks for another AWESOME Vid mate!

      Thanks Finn Wiggles! I’ll defo give some of the duckweed to Moe and Co!!! Its the first time I’ve ever managed to grow duckweed, and it by mistake in a storage tub! In the past when I’ve tried to grow it, it just goes yellow and dies off! Have you set up your pond again this year? 😊

    Where do you buy your watercress? Pond supplier or supermarket?

  • @heatherleonard204
    @heatherleonard204 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can eat the watercress, cut off and rinse, take the stalks off.
    Boil in hot salt water, drain and melt butter over the top season.. watercress is so good for you. 😊

    Love your videos, wonderful. The water cress must be edible? Silly question I know, but it would be good to make use of the trimmings 👍

    • @GingerFishyOfficial
      @GingerFishyOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Yeah, it is edible, and people do eat watercress they’ve grown in there pond, but apparently there is a possibility of potentially liver flukes, I don’t know too much about it or how bigger risk it is, but would probably be worth doing some research into it if you were thinking of trying some. 😊👍

      Thanks you! Yeah, i love a bit of water cress in my ponds!!! I’ve not tried water mint though, maybe try some this year!! I’ve been thinking recently about what the best bog filter plants are.. as I’m about to start work on my new pond (when the weather finally sorts itself out) which will have a good size bog filter on it, with plenty of room for a good few plants!! Can I make a suggestion about yiur outflow pipes this is my opinion I would channel them along so they go in to one corner of the pond that way you’ll see your fish all I can see is ripples can’t see the actual pond

    • @GingerFishyOfficial
      @GingerFishyOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that’s a good idea, it is a bit hard to see the fish with all the splashing. I do think if I was to build it again, the position of the outflow pipes is something that I would probably change! 😎

    Can I plant watercress as a stem plant fully submerged in my aquarium? Do u think it would survive or try to reach the surface?

    • @GingerFishyOfficial
      @GingerFishyOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not too sure to be honest.. it is more of a marginal plant so may struggle, but might be worth trying out! I’d imagine it will probably try to grow up and out of the water!

    • @micahsencounters
      @micahsencounters ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GingerFishyOfficial thanks for u reply! I’ll experiment with one cutting with roots already. I agree, maybe if the water is oxygenated enough it will make it? I hope the traits that make it prolific as a marginal plant will make it a survivor underwater.

    Watercress is okay with being planted in just gravel? It doesn’t need any soil?

    • @GingerFishyOfficial
      @GingerFishyOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, watercress will grow fine in just gravel. So long as you’ve got some fish producing waste.. the watercress will use that as its nutrients 👍😊

    Do you truly need water movement for watercress?? I inherited a dirt pond that fed by a spring, very low flow, but I do have two oxygenators in the pond. I’m just concerned bc the movement in the pond is there but minimal.

    • @GingerFishyOfficial
      @GingerFishyOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, definitely doesn’t require water movement.. it just speeds up the growth. It’ll still grow even with no water movement, just not as quickly! 😊👍

    Watercress has taken our pond. What is the best way to get rid of it.?

    • @GingerFishyOfficial
      @GingerFishyOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tricky one, the only way I can think of is to pull it all out by hand.. the thing with watercress is that it continues to grow even in the winter, so there isn’t even a particular time of year when it would be easy to pull out.. good luck with trying to get rid!!

    • @GingerFishyOfficial
      @GingerFishyOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I would say though, is once you get it out, try replacing it with a different less invasive plant, that will hopefully stop it from coming back to quickly 🌱

  • @theimbiber

    now i might have been misinformed ... but.... apparently you shouldnt eat watercress grown in ponds as it could have flukes in it...?

    • @GingerFishyOfficial
      @GingerFishyOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not too sure to be honest, I don’t eat the watercress myself, I’m just using it as a pond plant to help keep the water clean. I know some people do eat it though (when grown in a pond) but like you mentioned, the risk of flukes etc could well be a possibility! 😊
