Hello Rob, After having some store-bought Nasturtium Officinale seeds totally fail to germinate, I started looking for answers and fortunately found you in your delightful garden. This one is Cresson de Fontaine (in French) and I would have assumed this watercress could grow in soil, but maybe it's different to the store-bought variety. Thanks for your demonstration. I subscribed and hit notifications.
That is a shame. Interesting though. This is the worst year I've ever had for seeds germinating. Most of my gardening friends have said so too. Have you heard that also where you live? Only about 5% of all the 40 kinds of seeds I planted this year germinated, compared to about 60-70% in previous years. I don't know whether or not to be worried or put it down to just being 'one of those' years!
So you could keep it in the same bucket, just add fresh water every day or so , and it will grow. Is that correct? Incidentally, I watched a TV program ,that had two runners. Before these people went on a run, one had watercress, the other didn't. When they came back from the run , they're blood was checked. The guy with no watercress had jagged oxidize cells, the guy who ate watercress had smooth protected cells
Yes, that's more or less correct. Though the quality of the water will effect the quality of the watercress. How fascinating, I can quite believe that! 🌿😁

Great video, so simple and easy to follow. I'm trying it myself - the watercress has grown nice roots and then I put it outside in a tub, the plants are growing tall but with small leaves and some are turning yellow. Any tips on how I get them to grow green and bushy? Cheers :)
@@robsdiscovery No I haven't changed the water at all! :( Although it has rained a bit over the past couple of weeks. I'll refresh the water in the tub today.
Flushing with fresh water (ideally not tap water) as often as possible will oxygenate the watercress which will help it to grow much better and the leaves ought to become green again. I'd say twice a week minium but every day if you can. All the best! 🌿🤗
I'd love to be able to answer your question but I'm not sure what to say. I've not had a problem with mosquito larvae in my watercress 'beds'. It could be because there're not too many of them in this area, or because the water is flowing just enough to discourage them from laying. It may be the frogs who live near the tubs that are feeding on the larvae or perhaps the herbs growing nearby that repel them. Or maybe all those things! Having said I've never had a problem with them they'll probably be everywhere this year! What about covering whichever growing container you choose to use with mosquito netting? Or changing the water frequently enough so that it's not standing? Or both? Is indoors an option for you?
@@robsdiscovery So, it's not quite the larvae that are the problem. The adults seem to be attracted to any moist place (like a garden) in search of a spot to lay their eggs. Herbs seem like a good solution though. What kinds seem to have the best effect on insects? I tried mint, shiso, rosemary, basil and lemongrass so far and nothing's repelled them yet. Granted they were all delicious (well except for the cat pee... but hey it's all natural fertilizer) And indoor growing would probably get on my roommates' nerves since the place is already pretty cramped and we've had mold issues in the past.

@@robsdiscovery maybe just a little. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I have a bag of water cress seeds. I’ve started some in starting potting mix. On another note though... people munching like that at the beginning make me gag. it has to be the most revolting sound in the solar system. Yet you looked like you took such pride in doing it!

@@robsdiscovery No worries man... Just thought I would mention it. I like your advice though. I went and got some seeds last night! Can't wait for them to get going... for now though I will continue to get it from the store. The video was great.
Watercress gets all the nutrients it needs from the water and the rest is done by photosynthesis. Water contains a surprisingly high level of nutrients, which of course varies hugely depending on its source. But even so, most water sources contain more than enough for this incredibly undemanding, self-sufficient plant.
@@robsdiscovery yeah its happens but in my country wash out those leaves with dish soap and vinegar it may be something else I will ask cause I like watercress a lot.

It could be because there're not too many of them in this area, or because the water is flowing just enough to discourage them from laying. It may be the frogs who live near the tubs that are feeding on the larvae or perhaps the herbs growing nearby that repel them. Or maybe all those things! Having said I've never had a problem with them they'll probably be everywhere this year!
definitely the frogs! Helpful little guys.
Enjoyed your presentation Rob, though I don't enjoy Watercress as much as you do, I still want to grow & eat it for its nutritional value. The taste is reminiscent of Nasturtium leaves & radishes!
Thank you, Jenny :-) Yeah, you'd have to travel far & wide to find someone who loves it as much as me! :-D I suppose it does taste a bit nasturtiumy. And I've just found out why.. It's part of the nasturtium family! Well well well :-)
@@robsdiscovery i actually decided to see if it will grow in my fish tank... it has a light on the top totally not sure if its enough...? . i have some rooted out and i will let you know how it goes . I also placed more outdoors over rocks and water.
Well, what do you know!! Didn't trust myself to have as discerning palate as I obviously had in this case!
I've subscribed! Think your addiction to the stuff is rubbing off on me! You have lovely eyes. Your enthusiasm shows through them.
I've subscribed. Very helpful info. Thanks :)
you only got his clothes?
Hi where is the water coming?
Hello :-) It's drainage water (from rain) running off all the land uphill from mine.
Jesus Christ dude, do you need a cigarette after eating that sprig of watercress?
😂 Yep, I do love Watercress! 😉
👍👍👍👍
Everything I needed to know thanks.
Watercress salads are pretty good but I’m not quite sure I get your obsession with the stuff
Tea time you say??
You're most welcome. I'm glad to have been of help 😊
Watercress sandwiches are my favourite, with good quality bread & butter sandwich 🥪🌿😋
I've a similar level of over the top passion for most the things growing here, for better or worse 😆
Yes, tea time as in the main evening meal, as opposed to afternoon cup of tea time. As obsessed as I appear to be with it even I concur that it'd not compliment good cuppa 😄
Am scared 🐸 might jump out !
😆
Y'all know this guy may be eating water cress but he's smoking another kind of weed lol...
Do you really think I come across as a stoner?! 😂
So
😂

@@robsdiscovery maybe just a little. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
I have a bag of water cress seeds. I’ve started some in starting potting mix.
Should I place them in water like this after they’ve grown their first set of real leaves, or can I start them directly in water?
I love watercress, but it’s not really sold in bags like that here in America.
The leafs got eaten by snails ehhhwww
It was flea beetles 🪲
Slow but interesting
Haha! Thanks! 😄
This is one of my quicker paced videos 😉
On another note though... people munching like that at the beginning make me gag. it has to be the most revolting sound in the solar system. Yet you looked like you took such pride in doing it!
You're right. It's certainly not for everyone. It makes me cringe a little when other people do it.. mostly. But I've tried pleasing everyone most of my life. I can't. So now I please myself! I was indeed munch munch munching with both pleasure & pride! :-D
@@robsdiscovery No worries man... Just thought I would mention it. I like your advice though. I went and got some seeds last night! Can't wait for them to get going... for now though I will continue to get it from the store. The video was great.
I like the sunken bath tub too... I will keep an eye out for one.
Well fk me is it really that easy to regrow watercress?? Thanks
Yep, it is! 😄
🤯
What about nutrients?
Watercress gets all the nutrients it needs from the water and the rest is done by photosynthesis. Water contains a surprisingly high level of nutrients, which of course varies hugely depending on its source. But even so, most water sources contain more than enough for this incredibly undemanding, self-sufficient plant.
SOULJAH, JAHBLESS....
nice but looks a some kind of insect is damagng the leaves.
Thanks :-) Yeah, it always looks like that. I don't know why or what's doing it. It doesn't seem to be affecting its vigour or taste though!
@@robsdiscovery yeah its happens but in my country wash out those leaves with dish soap and vinegar it may be something else I will ask cause I like watercress a lot.
Oh dude , please
Would you care to elaborate? 🤔
You take too long of time to show .
Yeah, I purposefully make my videos much slower paced than other TH-cam videos. Lots of people like them... and many don't 🤷🏻♂️ I hope you got the information you were looking for, even if you did have to wait a minute or two for it 😄
Weird!!
Thanks! 😄
Stopped watching after 1 :13 min. You spent 1/5th of the video eating and chewing loudly. I am sure the rest of the video is as entertaining.
Haha, yeah! It is a bit 'chewy' at the beginning, isn't it! That would irritate me too. I must remember not to eat so passionately on screen.. it seems to have become a bit of a running theme in the videos so far! :-D
Trying not spending over one fifth of the video on the introduction might help to. When I seen it was 1:13 in on a 5 minute video and you still did not even start talking about the subject I was done.
Thanks for the feedback.. You reeeeeeeeally wouldn't like my other videos then! :-D
@@robsdiscovery Ramble away Rob. Very entertaining. I am just as passionate about eating what I grow and growing what I eat.
