Marc, i recently just recommended your art program to a friend as a Christmas gift to her kid, as she loves drawing and is hungry to learn. She'd already gone through most of your TH-cam videos. Ever since Christmas, she has been, according to her mother, drawing and watching your program videos through the night and going to bed in the morning. 😂 Thanks for making such an awesome program.

@@LordTchernobog That's not what is meant by "standards," here. The idea is to sincerely believe that you can indeed achieve the things you look at someone doing, and thank right now that you can't. The "standard" being referred to here has to do with the work put in, not the result that comes out.

Marc's art for this week (which is excellent!) is fan art of the popular anime/manga series *Frieren* The art itself is similar to the *Frieren* artist, Tsukasa Abe, with touches of Mika Pikazo. The only thing I would say is that Frieren wouldn't pose like that. If you look at the official artbook or read the manga, you will never see a pose like that as Frieren never tries to act cute. It's not her nature. Mika Pikazo is an amazing artist, but I actually prefer her earlier art. Her current art style is too busy for my eyes. If you want to learn more about her style there are a number of great YT videos which deconstruct her current style. Mika Pikazo uses great colors (triadic harmony), basic brushes (g-pen for hard edges, watercolor), Clip Studio Paint which has a great tool for easily creating screen tones/color screen tones, and Photoshop for final image manipulation. Mika's layer structure is similar to many Japanese artists: base layer + shadows 1 + shadows 2 + highlights (4 layers and sometimes 5 layers: additional highlight).
As a kid, I loooved watching random people drawing, not tutorials, but just progress videos.. I used to think it was useless, but I now realise I subconsciously adopted quite a few art habits from these people, and whenever I feel stuck or don't know the best technique to use, there's always this one random thing I remember to help me out :)(
I narrowed my art goals this year down to one word: Consistency. Anything and everything is accomplished by consistently working on it until it's accomplished. I can even extend that to the rest of my life as well!
My goals for 2024 is to learn anatomy and perspective basics, I’ve always felt like it was holding me back as a character artist to not be able to animate or draw a character in space without fully relying on reference 🙏🏾
Marc can you make a video about how you work on practicing art and challenges you faced with having ADHD and maybe the habits you put in place to help with distraction or general burn out? Maybe some ways to modify art studies for the neurodivergent students?
These advices tbh apply to everything, I will say the vision is the main one. Having a vision is fuel for your engine. If you don't have a clear one yet, it's ok. Interact with new things, old things, things, people etc. it will help you refine your vision maybe in ways that you didnd't expect and now you can't think of otherwise

God. I hate you. I was so disappointed with my art and my progress, my bf initially recommended your stuff to me a month or so ago and I followed along, but I was so discouraged that I felt like I'd never get anywhere. 9% is WAY higher than I was expecting. I'm a writer by trade, and it's what I spend all my time on. However, I'm really hoping to add art this year to eventually illustrate my own covers and adapt my work to manga/comic form. I had that same goal last year and dropped the ball.

Bro... Your word on creating a vision hit me hard. Words that apply to my music projects that are sitting unfinished and unreleased to the world... Im so close to a paradigm shift in life, its actually causing anxiety that im working through to get to the other side. Its just the fear of change, and thats why your words on vision hit hard... Knowing how i see myself in my true form helps break down those fears, i need to lean into the fear of stagnation as someone who i no longer want to be.
I watched your video about doing different forms and shapes ( the manequin one) and it taught me a little bit about perspective and helped me draw a few characters that actually looked like humans! MY goal this year is to practice drawing body forms, hands, arms ,heads etc and draw ONE landscape drawing in any form that is a serious project and looks presentable! Doesnt sound like a lot , but at my current speed i can draw a good looking hand in 4 hours and my last character isnt done yet and i started it 5 days ago :D haha.
I made a few goals last year. One was to draw more than the year before and I did! I made it vague enough that I could easily accomplish it. Another goal was to finish a sketchbook and I got halfway there! So it's a start 💪😤
My new years resolution is to keep a healthy sleep schedule, exercise 3 times a week, and practice more art. With how unhealthy I have lived my life by always having my sleep schedule upside down, sitting on my butt all day/night and not exercising, and being borderline underweight, I don't see myself being able to draw every day till I have sorted that out. So for now "more" practice is enough.
I'm quite glad this was about your mentality instead of physicality, I could perform the same rituals or do the same stunts as a professional without knowing any of the rhymn or reason, but even if I don't have those same habits, or even because of it, yet know the different ways to think about something, then I'll improve.
promised myself last year on Jan 1 2023 that I'll draw more and study music more but I actually just completed 10% of it and it's the most frustrating moment in my life. hope this video's gonna help me though xd
I am doing the Creatuanary challenge, I don't expect to finish all of them within the 31 days but I will see them through to the end, even if it takes longer, also being organized and breaking down the projects into actionable steps that makes my process more concrete and efficient
Although I've been drawing my whole life, I've barely improved. Made a little progress and started drawing more last year, so I'm hoping to continue down the path to getting better. Definitely going to make a big change this year. Thanks for your videos, Marc! They always inspire me to keep practicing.
I watched you religiously the year before last. Made massive gains the xp was crazy. Had my daughter took last year off and now I’m back since she is drawing with me lol
I did pretty good! I was on the path, some things at the end of the year made it a bit more difficult. But im ready with less work hours starting tomorrow to get back on track! You're videos helped to me to make a good workload and schedule to get so much farther than in my whole life haha. It was frustrating at first, but now i appreciate everything. I will try looking at making a more full view of where my goal to help stay on track for 2024. Best wishes Marc, you really helped to change my life, in a huge way. To find joy in the process of learning art, removing the usual dread haha.
2023 sadly was a year i barely drew due to uni pressure and a bit of burn out but i wanna start fresh this year since i am now done with university and full time working so after 4 PM i tune of from work and have free time.
My Goal is to start drawing again, even if it is only 30 minutes a day. I graduated from high school (german) last year and started university because of that I stopped drwaing😢
This and another tutorial by another artist have really helped me change my mindset, I started drawing in late 2022 and while I have made strides I want to learn better faster. I'll be changing my standards and habits and not just rely on willpower to keep up with my art journey!!
Thank you so much Marc, this video really changed my view. ive been working of motivatiom and discipline, but my passion became quiet. I really needed reminding of my vision. thank you so much.
One thing i've been following recently is learning to walk before you run and crawl before you walk. For instance if you wanna go to the gym start small like smaller then you think. workout or go to the gym 1 - 2 times a week for about 2 months straight this is just to build the habit and because it's a lower amount your more likely to show up you are also more likely to crave it then after 2 months raise it by a day. Too many people jump all in and for the few that succseeed great but majority of people can't go all in on a brand new thing without stumbling off your horse. So start small this is true for everything you are also more likely to go harder on the days you do show up even if it's a small amount progress takes time rushing results is what hinders you success
If you ask me, I'd say rule number one: take some time to rest. I said REST. Not playing videogames or spending time on social media. I mean just do nothing. Creativity needs spaces. Good music is made not only with notes, but with silences between them too. Give your brain some real resting time and see the magic! 😉
last year i planned on following your one year plan in drawing but i was so confused as to which medium to use (traditional pencil-paper or computer-tablet) and since my tablet gave up last year, i decided to do the traditional way this time. not only i could do it anywhere, it wouldn't give me an excuse not to as long as i have pencil and paper. one day at a time. good luck to all of us!!
Well I can proudly say that I came really close this time. I managed to accomplish everything except 1. And that one thing I didn't manage to do was complete one sketchbook. That didn't happen because I kept drawing in 5 different sketchbooks. I began taking art seriously towards the end of 2022 and I've made a lot of progress since then. In 2023 I did the 100 heads challenge. Drew every single day. Got better at gesture. Learnt some anatomy, made a short 6 page comic, started learning to work digitally and a bunch of other stuff Basically I think it's really important to try a lot of different stuff especially when you're starting out. I'm still not sure what direction I wanna go with my art but I'm definitely getting closer. You never know what you like unless you try it out. Also trying out different things can help to stop things from getting boring.
Man, thanks for the video, recently, i've started practicing and studying my art properly, and not just copying a image in google, but even though, i felt there were something missing, and i found what was missing here, thanks, btw, you got a new sub
Thank you for the video Marc. Procrastination and not trying new things was one of my issues that I had last year. I was so afraid to try and draw new things that I ended up growing stagnant as a result. I hope this year I can break out of that shell and draw more. One step at a time.
After 5 years as an artist, I recently revisited my fundamentals, achieving a professional level this year. Each week, I diligently sketch intricate anatomy ref studies and master studies and consistently progress. Referencing past studies, I've become my own teacher, critiquing and improving upon my previous work. I now say "Who did this mistakes? A week before me ain't he? Let's paintover this abomination and make the proportions better. Com 'ere!"
holy crap marc I haven’t watched your videos for around half a year now (I will definitely be changing that) and your english pronunciations improved so much I could barely tell if you were the same person :O
What kind of witchcraft is this guy doing, I swear I’ve been watching so closely the drawing presses and it never fail so amaze me. The way just some lines change everything and little by little you see the drawing come to life. ❤ Also DUDE stop putting the speed drawings I cannot concentrate on anything you say because of how focused I am. 😂
2023 was an amazing year for me. but this 2024 I think it'll be even more for my art journey. I'll practice harder and smarter since I have better circumstances now starting with a change of habit great tips on this one to start the year right.
Can you do a guide on how to render? Like how to go from a mostly finished piece to a completed high standard piece? I always struggle once I get to the "good enough" phase of art.
I am not an artist by any means, I am hobbyist programmer with focus on game development and yet I found this video helpful, thanks a lot Marc. It's always a pleasure to watch your videos, especially those that are more focused on mental component for self improvement. :)
Ok, that's a really good point for me. To be honest when I ever wanted to do stuff I just wanted to do it because I thought it is cool, I was never really thinking what I want to accomplish by doing and developing it. Setting goal is so crucial. Second thing, if you can't set a goal, you have to ask yourself if the thing you want to do really matters? Thanks MB!
1. Build a strong vision around your goal, something you can point at and say "if I don't put in the work today I won't get there". 2. Set the standards that you have to uphold for that vision. 3. Build your habits and raise your standards slowly.
Something I've had a big urge to do was to draw every day (like, have my own drawing hour), not only because that's very fun but also because well... It just comes to me that if you do something a constantly you tend to get good at it, but I'm actually very curious if that isn't actually the most efficient way to better artistic skills and if something like, "draw a new fundamental everyday" is better than the "draw whatever picture comes to mind" everday that i've actually really been enjoying now that i got some nice time on hands considering last year was a pretty movemented school year (for better or for worse lol) anyways, love ur vids Marc, keep up the good work :^)
This year I really wanted to get better at drawing, especially by using the art program. The realisation struck me that even with the discount it was really expensive when converted to my curreny 😭😭😭 I understand that it's definitely going to be worth the price, but I can't fit that one time payment into my budget, disappointingly. But even without it, I'll try to learn things without the program!!!
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:45 *🧠 Stop relying solely on willpower to achieve your goals; build a compelling vision around your goal to be naturally pulled towards it.* 04:27 *📈 Raise your standards and define what you're willing to achieve; high standards lead to consistent action and success.* 07:43 *🔄 Change your habits to meet your standards; small habits contribute to overall success and can be adjusted over time for improvement.* Made with HARPA AI
I personally think that last point is the most important one. If you can't create habits that lead you to your goals, nothing else will push you forward. Once you are able to create and reinforce positive habits, it's just matter of time before the goals are met.
I have always been struggling as an artist tbh. Whether it be comparing myself to others or being motivated to even pick up my pencil and draw, but I've been following you to better create new things and get back into artistry as a whole. I think this video has really opened up my mind to what is possible and what's not possible for me right now in my capacity as an artist. I might be able to even go further than what I think I'm capable of so thanks for this advice. A great video as always!
One big obstacle for me is wanting a art style I can’t have? Every art style is unique so you can’t just start drawing exactly like someone else and I know that but idk my mind just makes me not like my art because of this so part of my art journey this year will be starting to like my art again :)
What i am going to do is trying to post more frequently despite having work and school life choking me around and by having a schedule itll motivate me to create more content even if i dont want to that day.ill also start a channel in the near future to push out content
Hi marc! im sure you heard this alot but youre an inspiration to many including me! been studying illustration and your videos just makes it alot more easier. More power to you dude
My new years resolution for this year is to level up my art. I've been drawing almost my entire life already, but I felt it was time to really define my skills, hence why I decided to join the art school program right after Christmas. I'm seeing improvements already, mostly thanks to the gesture drawing that I've been purposefully avoiding in the past... I'm excited about the process and I'm sure that by the end of the year, my art will be twice as good as it is now! Thanks for your hard work, Marc!
January 2022 I made a new year resolution that at the end of the year I will have a character design portfolio and a job waiting for me. And I achieved that goal.
Will power and adhe dont mix, I reached most of my art goals, I also made 16 art goals last year. Ive been using themes and tasks instead of goals. When i make goals tasks instead it isnt quite as negotiable
I loved this, but I think for the first part you meant “feeling/hype” instead of “will power”. The good feeling/hype come and go, but what will keep u going and be consistent is will power/discipline. Every time u keep working on improving some skill despite how u feel (especially when u are not feeling motivated) you strengthen your discipline/will power which are like your muscles. And the bigger your muscles, the more you will be able to do/push forward. For most people, the vision/goal may be great. But the feeling won’t always be enough to pull us. But what will keep us going is discipline/will power.
Another awesome Art Therapy video, Marc. As a parent and working full time, my slot for art is at night when kids are in bed. I’m knackered by the time dinner and bedtime routine is over. I feel bad to miss one night of drawing lessons. But I have also seen the results when I get the paper and pencil out and draw stuff and vigorously smudge the charcoal with my blending stump and whip that mono eraser and kneaded eraser into action . Then I sit and say to myself “well done for not slacking off! The drawing is sh!t, but it looks better than the dung heap from last night!” It’s hard but I know I have to make time. My News Years resolution is “No New Years Resolution!”
I got a sketchbook for my birthday so for 2024 I set my goal to practice something related with drawing every days for 3 months, I want to be able to draw from imagination without copying but I have a long road ahead.
That's great. Stick to it. The first few weeks it's gonna be hard to stay consistent but it's definitely worth it. Btw almost all artists use some kind of reference when drawing. They might make changes to that reference but when working they always always use reference. Drawing something with reference is always going to look better than if u didn't use reference. Especially if you're a beginner drawing without reference shouldn't be your primary goal. But definitely do practice drawing without reference once in a while. I'd say around 1-2 hrs a week can be spent practicing drawing from imagination.
Hey Marc I love your videos! Would it be possible for you to upload a video of this video of you rendering Frieren without it being a time lapse? I would love to see process with your anime drawings in real time. Thank you and have a great day :)
The fact that i procrastinated watching this, does not bode well for me, does it? xD But I will get better at art. Hmmm, vision you say? I think I need to define what that vision is for me to achieve it. Wise words Marc, and gorgeous study!
I drew every day last year, even on the bad days. Committed to even just an eyeball. However, building a vision towards a goal is better for accountability

I watched you religiously the year before last. Made massive gains the xp was crazy. Had my daughter took last year off and now I’m back since she is drawing with me lol
Just the video i needed, thanks Marc
This year is started the 1 year art challenge so far breaking my backs because of gesture drawing
Thank you for another great video Marc, I will start to apply it on my life right now (Wednesday February 07, 2024).
I always stop art procrastination by watching Marc's videos! Watching him drawing motivates me.
Yo this is a goated new year's video!! Thanks teach!!!
Also happy new year to everyone!
Thanks to you i started drawing! Its so damn hard, but i'll try to keep going!! You earned a new subscriber! :)
I completed all my art goals last year :) improved tons!!!
last year i planned on following your one year plan in drawing but i was so confused as to which medium to use (traditional pencil-paper or computer-tablet) and since my tablet gave up last year, i decided to do the traditional way this time. not only i could do it anywhere, it wouldn't give me an excuse not to as long as i have pencil and paper. one day at a time. good luck to all of us!!
This year I will try to do stuff "project oriented", like draw things for a concept of a game, learn 3d modeling for a starfighter game, etc.
Learnt some anatomy, made a short 6 page comic, started learning to work digitally and a bunch of other stuff
Basically I think it's really important to try a lot of different stuff especially when you're starting out. I'm still not sure what direction I wanna go with my art but I'm definitely getting closer. You never know what you like unless you try it out. Also trying out different things can help to stop things from getting boring.
I'm now filled with motivation and hope, thank you Marc
Just what I needed Marc!
What kind of witchcraft is this guy doing, I swear I’ve been watching so closely the drawing presses and it never fail so amaze me. The way just some lines change everything and little by little you see the drawing come to life. ❤
Also DUDE stop putting the speed drawings I cannot concentrate on anything you say because of how focused I am. 😂
I'm sorry, I haven't been drawing since the start of December 😭. I just enjoy watching your videos for now 🤧.
2023 was an amazing year for me. but this 2024 I think it'll be even more for my art journey. I'll practice harder and smarter since I have better circumstances now starting with a change of habit great tips on this one to start the year right.
The reason why u got so many supporters is because of your friendly and entertaining narration
Can you do a guide on how to render? Like how to go from a mostly finished piece to a completed high standard piece? I always struggle once I get to the "good enough" phase of art.
I do have a father who teaches me about life, but you kinda feel like a father as well in the name of art for this artist
I am not an artist by any means, I am hobbyist programmer with focus on game development and yet I found this video helpful, thanks a lot Marc. It's always a pleasure to watch your videos, especially those that are more focused on mental component for self improvement. :)
New Year’s resolution is to watch more art school and learn more stuff
A lot of your lessons are practical and worked for me. I hope I can take this one to heart.
Thank you, Marc! Let's make this year excellent.
Thanks MB!
the shading is BEAUTIFUL
It just comes to me that if you do something a constantly you tend to get good at it, but I'm actually very curious if that isn't actually the most efficient way to better artistic skills and if something like, "draw a new fundamental everyday" is better than the "draw whatever picture comes to mind" everday that i've actually really been enjoying now that i got some nice time on hands considering last year was a pretty movemented school year (for better or for worse lol)
anyways, love ur vids Marc, keep up the good work :^)
This year I really wanted to get better at drawing, especially by using the art program. The realisation struck me that even with the discount it was really expensive when converted to my curreny 😭😭😭 I understand that it's definitely going to be worth the price, but I can't fit that one time payment into my budget, disappointingly.
But even without it, I'll try to learn things without the program!!!
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:45 *🧠 Stop relying solely on willpower to achieve your goals; build a compelling vision around your goal to be naturally pulled towards it.*
04:27 *📈 Raise your standards and define what you're willing to achieve; high standards lead to consistent action and success.*
07:43 *🔄 Change your habits to meet your standards; small habits contribute to overall success and can be adjusted over time for improvement.*

The best channel for teaching drawing
Hi marc! im sure you heard this alot but youre an inspiration to many including me! been studying illustration and your videos just makes it alot more easier.
Happy new year Mr Marc! Have a like and a comment as payment for the class, I hope to learn something new today! :D
Will power and adhe dont mix, I reached most of my art goals, I also made 16 art goals last year. Ive been using themes and tasks instead of goals. When i make goals tasks instead it isnt quite as negotiable
Happy New Year!
Epic, truthful, straightforward! Nothing to say, a lot to act upon. Thank you so much Marc!!
The drawing is sh!t, but it looks better than the dung heap from last night!”
It’s hard but I know I have to make time. My News Years resolution is “No New Years Resolution!”
quite literally what i need. hope i can watch it soon
Best artist in the history ❤🎉
Happy new year (I'm a little late, typical art student MO), Marc, hope you have the best year yet!
Thank you you're the best Marc^^💜
Hey Marc I love your videos! Would it be possible for you to upload a video of this video of you rendering Frieren without it being a time lapse? I would love to see process with your anime drawings in real time. Thank you and have a great day :)
Saving these to my playlist Art school ❤
This year I just hope i start enjoying drawing again
Mindfulness helps. I ysed the book 30 Days to Overcome Proyby Corin Devaso. It was cool.
The fact that i procrastinated watching this, does not bode well for me, does it? xD
But I will get better at art. Hmmm, vision you say? I think I need to define what that vision is for me to achieve it. Wise words Marc, and gorgeous study!
Let's gooooo frieren ❤❤❤
Let’s go Marc!
I drew every day last year, even on the bad days. Committed to even just an eyeball. However, building a vision towards a goal is better for accountability
