Ty for this video. I’m a 25 year old woman and was able to do this with no issue thanks to you and several other repair videos I’ve watched. I’ve replaced my blower motor, engine air filter, and now my thermostat thanks to helpful people like you giving us these gems. This was my first repair that I’ve done under the hood. I was intimidated at first but once I got going I found the confidence to continue. Thank you for saving me money and keeping me educated on my car. I love my civic! These cars are so reliable and relatively inexpensive and easy to repair when issues crop up. I’m a Honda owner for life. Only ever driven Honda’s and they’ve never failed me. 💁🏽♀️💙
I was lost until you said to open the hood. But seriously, 1A videos are always my first choice...always well-filmed and to the point without all the rambling on that so many video makers cannot seem to figure out.
plus they actually so the process of how to do stuff instead of just pointing at things and saying what you should do without showing how to actually do it.
People need to also know that most of the non-OEM thermostats for this car will NOT come with a new rubber gasket. Why? I have no idea. I don't know how smart it would be to reuse a 10-15+ year old rubber gasket after it has been exposed to that much head and hot coolant sitting tight against a very hot engine block. So its kind of a rip off. It cost me and additional $5 to buy it separately, and it was hard to find in stock. I drove around to 4 different auto parts stores and finally found one that carried a couple of them. That really blows my mind since this is supposed to be one of the most common problems on these cars and an easy DIY job. They carry so many different brands of thermostat but almost no gaskets. Who would want a new thermostat with no gasket?

this was an amazing video. I need to do my gfs thermostat... lately its been super cold in so cal and for some reason her car isnt getting up to temp. I think the thermostat is stuck open. better than closed tho
Don’t forget to install the “jiggler valve” between the two bumps on the gasket so that when you install the thermostat and gasket assembly it’s located at the top instead of the bottom. The jiggler valve is meant to bleed air from the cooling system. Air will try to escape to the top and that’s why the jiggler valve has to be installed facing up not down. If you don’t it’ll be harder to bleed air from the cooling system and could have an overheat issue after finishing. I suggest getting a vacuum bleeder that works by either by air pressure or some kind of hand/foot pump.
Is there another way to bleed the coolant system? since I don't have that fancy funnel. Also do you have to drain the system to change the thermostat or can you just pinch of the hose with pliers

It's crazy how such a vital engine component is so simple to replace yet can literally cause a blown engine of it's allowed to go too long before you replace it
Hi. Very informative and comprehensive video. Can I ask you if the location of my thermostat is the same on my Honda CRV 2007 2.0 engine automatic 4x4? Thank you
I would highly recommend to get that $5 gasket theres a high chance it will be stuck on there and when you pry it out it will tear. And it is hard to find at autozone. You do not want to get stuck !!
I had the craziest problem. 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid here. Thermostat looked stuck open. Data list showed engine got to 176 degrees finally after 20 minutes of driving, also would cool rapidly to 142 degrees after coming to a stop without turning A/C on just normal driving. Also got a random p0420. When I took the thermostat out the gasket was not even round or tight to the thermostat anymore. Looked like water may have been leaking around the gasket past the thermostat or it just opened early and got stuck open from a weak spring or bad wax pellet or something. But after doing the thermostat and gasket at 176,000 miles heater getting good heat and no more rapid cooldown, no p0420 and engine warms within five minutes of driving to 185 degrees.
I thought some sort of lithium grease goes around therm seal and a reapplication of a seal on the housing? You just put both on with no seal.. what’s up?
I have a question I replaced my thermostat on my civic I noticed it warms quickly is it good or bad? Sorry for the silly question it’s the first time I replace one
+Adonis Portillo A working thermostat will allow the engine to warm up quickly by closing when the engine is cold. Thermostats sometimes remain open when they fail which would cause the engine to take longer to warm up.
Hello there. I have a honda civic fd6. With my vehicle on, the temperature sometimes increases by one or two levels when going up the ramp. Sometimes it goes down one level while going down the ramp. Do you think it's because the weather is too hot? Or the thermostat?
+Gültekin Yılmaz We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Great work... I need your advice My car is short of water where every two days you need to fill the water bottle. There is no apparent leakage. And the technician told me you need to change the place where there is water regulator (Thermostat) where there is rust..... What do you think ??
The wife's car is overheating she says that the AC started struggling in the week prior to this happening. Now its not working at all. Will thermostat issues effect the AC?
+duane cato Under most circumstances, a bad thermostat will not have any effect whatsoever on the air conditioning system. We recommend having the vehicle looked at by a professional.
Is flushing the system, with water, necessary? What if the thermostat is not removed, how much old fluid would remain in the system, can this step be eliminated?
Thermostat is located near the bottom of the engine (lower hose) which is below the top of the radiator. You don't have to drain the coolant, but you'll end up dumping all the fluid during the replacement of the thermostat.
We currently do not have an auto repair video that covers this particular repair for your specific model. We will keep this request in mind in the event that we need to make this repair in the future. 1aauto.com +Rocky Monk
wouldn't it have helped in removing the thermostat to not have the drain plug installed? I imagine you had difficulty removing the thermostat because of suction.

Question? I got a 2009 civic that need to change the thermostat?do i need to update the ecm after replacing it?
nope just changed mines today

you don't put water in the reservoir. if your car runs cooler than normal and you get check engine light...replace thermostat.

Why did u take the battery out
How can I bleed it without that funnel ?
How long last?
Is it imperative that I drain the radiator?
+Teddy Ambriz We would suggest that you drain the radiator for the installation. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any further questions.
Teddy...did you end up draining your radiator? I’m not really set up to flush so I was hoping not to.
Thank you for the tutorial. Can you include too the link to buy thermostat? My honda civic 2009.
Can I replace the thermostat without bleed the radiator???
Yes but the coolant will spill more from the top. You can control the coolant spill better when you drain radiator.
No
Why do you drain the coolant if the thermostat is up top ?
Thermostat is located near the bottom of the engine (lower hose) which is below the top of the radiator. You don't have to drain the coolant, but you'll end up dumping all the fluid during the replacement of the thermostat.
Would a faulty thermostat cause the car to over heat? Im having constant problems with my honda over heating
Yes
Also make sure the radiator isnt leaking
