Could a blocked heater core cause my truck to overheat?
I'm trying to get to the heater core on my 2006 Chevy Equinox. do you happen to have a video on it? I've looked and I may be over looking it..
I have dodge trucks and have been doing this for 15 years. I fill the core with clr, let sit for an hour and then flush it with plain water. Works every time. I can't wait to hear why i shouldn't be doing this😂😂. Cheers!
Great video but here’s an extra tip, before installing the hoses back run coolant through the heater core to flush out all the water so you maintain a proper 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water
Do not do it like this. Old Heater cores get brittle where the hoses attach. If you bust off one of those metal nipples then you will need to replace the whole core which involves dash removal. Disconnect the hoses further down and flush from there. You've been warned.
pinecone moment
@BroncoBob *you're
That is why I said just go ahead and change the heater core. It is a long process; but, it is not that hard to do. Just a lot of disassembly and reassembly. 👈🏿. YOU MUST BE A PATIENT GRASSHOPPER. YOU CAN PAY $700 TO $1800 TO GET IT DONE YOURSELF.
Actually, the dash is not involved. On that particular model of Chevy/GMC the core is accessed from the lower footwell and involves 6 easily accessible screws and removal of the plastic core cover. It takes about 10 minutes.
My mechanic said the same thing about dash removal and lots of $ which prompted me to look it up on youtube. I was very relieved to see that it is an easy job! The core is cheap too!
Great tip
Only way I can move the sediment in BMW heater cores is by pulsing with air and water, water flushing alone often does not work. Drain coolant (not all just under the level of the heater core pipes) and disconnect the two heater core pipes from the engine and expansion tank. Wrap some gaffa (duct) tape around the tip of a typical blower so you can create a seal on either of the two plastic hose connectors, fill the heater core pipes with water from a hose and quickly use the blower to push the water through. You'll usually get a load of sandy coloured water coming out, understand this sand is from the mold when the block is originally cast which has broken loose inside the cooling system. Flush both ways using air and water until it runs clear, then run water through to get the final bits out. Reconnect pipes, refill cooling system and bleed. Enjoy your now toasty heating at last :D
Good job. Would like to suggest for some cars it's hard to get air out and to help with that problem after installing first hose remove the yellow clamp to allow coolant to burp the core then when coolant comes out install the second hose,
I need to try this on a 1998 Oldsmobile Aurora. The Heat quit working immediately after a coolant flush. When I replaced the Anti-Freeze, the County extension Agency said if it less than 5 gallons, to dump the coolant down the toilet. I couldn't believe their answer! So I have a 5 gallon Home Depot Bucket with the old Coolant I need to dispose of. Thank you for the video. Much appreciated.
Here's a trick I did. I put flush in the system then I reversed the hoses on the input and output to the heater core to get the reverse flow through it. Then drove it till I had about 6 hour's running time on it which was the longer option suggested on the Prestone Flush bottle. I think it worked well but I won't know till winter for sure. It's summer now, hard to tell how the heater will actually work when it's cold. Anyway, thought it was a neat trick, super easy and super low labor to get the reverse flow through the heater core. Hope this helps someone.
+Peter H Thanks for the feedback!
He needs to do a series on changing the heater core, disassembling the dashboard to changing the heater core out to changing the thermostat. 👈🏿
The problem with alot of these heat radiators is their Inlets and outlets tend to be on the same side. Which drastically reduces the area utilization on the heater core, and makes gum ups easier.
+Dave Crupel Thanks for the feedback!
FYI SOME VEHICLES HAVE PLASTIC HEATER CORE LINES COMING OUT THRU FIREWALL. SO DON'T TRY AND REMOVE HOSES ON OLD VEHICLES (MERCURY VILLAGER / NISSAN QUEST) INSTEAD CUT IN MIDDLE & REPAIR WITH A DOUBLE NIPPLE END SPLICE REPAIR. HOSE CLAMP ON.
Yes that's exactly what I'm going to do👍
you should flush it in the manner that you did the first time and then back flush it the other way the second time to remove all grits and contaminants from the tanks on the heater
I agree, with the hoses in place, why not flush in both directions it wouldn't take 30 more seconds and might dislodge more debris. Regards
Do you need to burp it after this or just add coolant
Thank you for the video. My heater core hoses are permanently sealed to the tubes and I have to cut them to do the flush...can you guys recommend any type of wrap/seal to tape them back together?
+Philip Bond you would want to replace the hoses. There isn't a tape that would be able to hold them together. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Use a T connector where you cut the hoses.
Scotch tape. Be sure it's 3M though.
@@billbosch9127 Great answer. The person that said there aren’t any stupid questions never saw the one about using tape on a heater hose.
@@justpray365 😂😂😂
Isn’t a regular garden hose already 5/8”? If so then no adapter needed if you cut up an old hose or cheap one. the female on the old/cheap hose goes on the male garden hose supplying water. Other half can be the outflow. Just a thought.
Could a blocked heater core cause my truck to overheat?
@@GoatFaceKilla no
@@GoatFaceKilla most likely a thermostat needs replaced you want to make sure your water pumps working and your radiator is got antifreeze if the water pump is working and you got antifreeze the most likely it's you thermostat of course you could have a clogged radiator that needs flushed most likely it's the thermostat or water pump
some are and yes that can work!

I believe I mixed up my heater core hoses! Which hose from the radiator and engine goes to Which connection to the heater core?
Very well explained
My car make water running sound and water suction sound under dash where heater core is. How can i get rid off
+navjeet singh Thanks for checking us out. That sound can be caused by air in the system, have you made sure it was entirely flushed? If you are unable to figure out what is causing the problem we recommend you have a trusted garage take a look to accurately diagnose it for you. 1aauto.com
Thank you so much for the videos.
Inspired to do mine God bless your channel.
+2brokenwings73 Thanks for checking us out!
looks like you replaced the heater core?! looks like a brand new one when you reinstalled the hoses!
Agreed
great observation! he also had left water in the old heater hore, I would recommend flushing it out with new coolant before putting the hoses back on
@@hardkore360 f Got a thing over somewhere What time is it has been seen
Ok? Probably did 2 videos in 1.
Am I the only one waiting for him to fire up the truck and say "That fixed it"!
I think hes still wearing a coat...
Yea
Maybe he is still scratching his head. Since he was anticipating the heater core to be more clogged.
Did it work?
Those hose block off clamps are what dreams are made of :D
Right. Mine on my van were designed by the devil
Yeah, vise grips don't do the job. Don't ask how I know
Ive used needle nose vise clamps and a broken paint stir stick on either to protect the hose from the jaws.
@@tysonkay4900 good idea
I don't even have these problems, but I like knowing what to do when it's time
After doing a complete coolant flush, is it possible on a MK4 golf to reverse the pipes to the heater matrix so it now runs in reverse or do they only operate one way round?
Could you use some CLR in the water (with proper sprayer of course)?
Did this work? We didn’t get the end result from this video.
Question, how about if your Anti freeze is low, would this cause your heat to disappear?
A M - yes if your coolant is low it can cause some heat loss. Top it up while running hot and see the change. Make sure you have good flow and your fans work as well! Good luck
@@MacsPiano never EVER top it up while running hot. Great way to have it geyser out. I took the cap off 3 hours after I got home and it did. Also adding cold coolant straight to hot with the engine off and then starting again can crack your head due to thermal shock. But what would I know, I only worked in radiator manufacturing.
+Link Knight Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
I have a 2000 s10 that keeps getting sludge in the cooling system and just pulled my heater core hoses off last night and this was the video I wanted to see. (No water in the oil)
+Larry Gonzales Thanks for checking us out!
Dude that introduces minerals into the system though!
Ever isolate the core, vacuum and blow it out after flushing it and fill it with CLR overnight or...? Have a 2000 Taurus which are notorious for blocked cores, it's at the bottom of the cooling system. Doing mine tomorrow, using just water doesn't work very well!
Your list of tools used in the video section does not include the most important tool you used the radiator hose block off clamps. Now I have to spend time searching for those, you should have had a hyperlink for those clamp pliers!
You also changed out the heater core in this video but just did not show that being done? Why
They sold out of thermostats at a critical time, winter time. Please do a video on changing the thermostat on a 4th Generation Dodge Ram plus list the tools need with socket extensions.
I flushed my 1997 C1500's entire cooling system with tap water. I plan on replacing it with 50/50 coolant, but I am concerned with the tap water that is left in the heater core. Should I be worried about corrosion from the left over tap water or will it be diluted with the fresh coolant enough to not matter?
Water wont hurt nothing
Remember pre diluted antifreeze is diluted with water if you buy straight anti freeze it will say to dilute it with water
If the heater core is clogged resulting in poor circulation of coolant back to the water pump will this cause engine overheat? I have done the thermostat and the car produces heat sometimes. Piping hot in and cold empty line out.
Generally there's not enough heat moved by the heater core to cause the engine to overheat with it ALONE. Because you have it switched off during summer. Sounds more like sludge blocking the tubes in your radiator. You can buy a coolant flush but sometimes it will make zero difference to the radiator because the tubes in the core are so thin. The heater CAN BE turned on full blast to help stop a car from overheating. Old trick us Australians use.
Luke warm heat on driver side cold on passenger side. Car gets hot while driving and fan kicks in even with heat off. Any advice thinking of doing this flush then replace heater core if the flush doesnt work.
Beast Mode sounds more like blender motor problem
I definitely need to get a set of those hose clamp pliers.
+Ratty Muscle Car - They are one of the greatest inventions. Thanks for watching our video!
i didnt run mineralized tap water thru mine... I bought two hoses to attach to the heater spouts about 3 ft long each... filled them with distilled water and then used an air gun to flush one way, and repeated the other way.. that way no corrosion could happen in the future... peace
Good idea
Excellent instructions. Great soundtrack 👌
You still have plain water in the heater core. Either blow it out or put new coolant mixture in it while you got the extension hoses connected to push out the plain water so it only leaves behind the new coolant mixture in the heater core/matrix.
+T K Thanks for the feedback!
Good video! Very informative.
On a 2008 Chevy Colorado there's a Yellow Hose connector on the right and a White hose connector on the left. Which side is which?
Totally confused say upper or lower, you grab with the hand in the way.
So the warmer side hose is the inlet ?
Don't use Dex-Cool in these engines,It crystalizes in the back ports I have a 5.7l with 10,000 miles had to do a intake manifold gasket and the back cooling ports where solid, clogged had to clean them out and I went back to the green anti-freeze.
Green is garbage compared to some other options. I actually use g12/g13 in many of my vehicles, it's a solid stable option with a lot of the right inhibitors.
So the hoter hose is the inlet right?
And the cooler is the inlet?
I need to know this too
so I am assuming I will need to do this as I had bad heat. But is it too late if you have gone from bad heater, to intermittent overheating, to full overheating?
Thanks, good production.
+sbdrumr Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Boiling water mixed with CLR. Let sit for one hour. Then flush.
So if doing a full system drain , its recommended to drain the radiator first then flush the core?
Hello..im tryna flush my 2011 kia sorento heater core..i feel one is hot and one is cold..question..which side would i send water thru? The cold side or hot side?
The cold side would be sending it through backwards which is what he is reccomending but I would do both ways.it goes in the core hot and comes out cooled down.
If the block off clamps were not in place would you loose all the coolant? Would it just gush out?
Dr. William Luther Pierce That’s what he said
what about flushing the water that's left in the heater core?
In the end did you attach the hose to the cold one
Hi I have a question, if I was to remove one of the heater core hosepipe and add a water hose , will I be able to flush the whole cooling system,
Did not know about the block off clamps. Need those. Thanks!
+Paul Lorenz Thanks for watching. 1aauto.com
You don't need those clamps you would maybe lose a cup of antifreeze by not using them if that
Do u have the removal tool for a heater hose for a mazda protege? Please
Looks like a new heater core to me
Likely they used one needing replaced so the fluid flushed was very obvious to the viewer.
Well I know this is a Chevy
when you're taking off the air box be very very careful with the mass airflow sensor. try not to bang it around or drop it you could damage it and your truck will not run properly... It also a good time to inspect the mass air flow sensor for any dirt build up.
it's not a cheap to replace the mass air sensor..... Just FYI.
Can you make a video on a heater core replacement on a 2008 scion xb?
My 02 Ram 1500 isn’t blowing hot air. Coolant is fairly clean and both the inlet and outlet to the heater are hot to the touch.
Do you still think flushing the system would help?
208Brando q@
208Brando change the thermostat
wonder if you can just swap the hoses around and drive it for a while

Was very subtle but at 5:50 i noticed the inlet and outlet looked NEW or VERY CLEAN compared to before (3:45)
... did u put a new matrix in there or something or did you clean the metal and just EDIT the video?

He put in a new heater core. If there’s good flow and the heater is still not working, then the core needed to be replaced.
He said IN THIS CASE THE Sediments coming out wasn't bad. HE DID NOT SAY He was doing this demonstration to show us.😮
Yeah I noticed that too lol I think they did that retested no heat new heater core?
Shouldnt you run the heater while doing that?
No I heater core is just like a mini radiator that's in the dashboard when the hot water flows through it and gets hot the fan blow across the thermostat radiator looking deal in the dashboard that's hot that's where you get your heat from turn the heater on will do nothing
I’ve never had to replace one before. Does the radiator usually run just a little hot ( like just a tick above 210) if the heater core is bad?
I changed my ac compress AC blows cold 🥶 but heater doesn’t heat any idea if i can fix it by doing this to my car ?
Did it ever work I'm facing the same issue?!
Depends on the vehicle. No heat to the defrost either? Some blend doors can get stuck.
At 5:30.. is it safe to do this with a water hose? Just won't be able to get the water back out.
Yeah , just add your coolant through your clear hose until the coolant comes out , then reconnect your heater core hoses.
My sons jeep has great heat. But the defroster don't work. Windows fog over instantly. No liquid on the floorboards. Possible plugged heater core?
+Mr Phillips We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
What about venting the heater core? Wouldn’t the trapped air cause heating issues?
I'm not sure if I have the right hose in the right side of the heater core. Can you help please?
Anyone know what size hoses and fittings to buy? I don't know much about measuring this stuff lol
One thing im not sure of.. anyone? What about the water thats left in heater core after the flush? Before reconnecting the lines .. wouldnt you want to vacate that water somehow?
I have a flickering noise behind the glove box .. Blower doesn't have force when flickering
You should have done a video on that 2006 Chrysler flushing heater core
Chryslers seem to be real mongrels for radiators and heater cores getting full of sludge.
Does a load of steam /smoke coming out the vents rule out a flush and confirm a bad core?
John O'Donovan yes
Definitely. Old ones from the 80s you could actually fix with a soldering iron.
If you're going to mess around with taken out the thermostat put a new one in those things are bitch to get to and you might as well replaces the right way because you will never want to do it again I've actually got rid of cars that had bad thermostats because the whole dashboard had to come out just to replace it
Thanks for sharing
Is it possible that this can cause the vents to blow different temperatures? My 2 passenger vents are blowing a little cool with heat on full blast. I checked all of my blend doors and they're all working fine, I have a 2002 Camry 2.4L
I have the same issue on my Jeep, left side is cool right side is hot. It's been flushed already from a mechanic and no luck. Have you found the cause of yours?
excellent video and parts, thanks
Video tip...please turn off the music while giving important instructions.
Y don't you just disconnect them and use the heater hoses from water pump and engine
I have an 06 Dodge Charger rt and I'm only getting heat when I accelerate its topped off and i replaced the thermostat about a year ago but never overheats
you need to bleed the system better. top off the coolant, start car and put heat on full blast. let it run, preferably with a spill free funnel attached. squeeze the hoses a few times and rev it a few times and hold it at 3-3500rpms, or until cooling fan kicks on. if this doesn't help, you may have a leak somewhere in the system. hope this helps. good luck!
JT 1200 there is a bleeder valve you can crack open a few turns then pop off the coolant reservoir cap and pour in coolant until coolant comes out of the bleeder valve then when there is lots of coolant coming from bleeder valve you tighten it and this all can be done when the engine is cold
I'm attempting to flush my G/F' s heater core in a 12' dodge avenger sxt, but where her inlet & outlet goes into the firewall hers has what look like aluminum tubing rather than hoes & they run all the way to the front near the radiator before each of them finally connect to hoes....am I looking at the correct tubing to attempt to do the flush you're doing in your video here? I'm fairly certain I'm at least looking at something related to the cooling/heating system cuz 1 of the tubes has a little outlet w/ a cap & tag around it that says (WARNING! Do not operate vehicle while system is under pressure! ACTION required, release vacuum) I opened this cap & found what looked like a tire valve stem pressure releaser inside....I pressed on it lightly to discover it had a TON of pressure behind it.... I'm new to heating/cooling system maintenance on any vehicle so I immediately stopped releasing pressure in case this wasn't something I should've done.... can you shed any light for me as to what I'm looking at? & how would I go about completing this same process in her avenger? If I'm leaving any helpful info out plz just ask & I'll do my best to give you any other useful details on what I'm dealing with or looking at...any help you could offer me would be extremely appreciated.... I've had her car on Jack stands now for 2 days while having to share my whip....so you can imagine how desperate I'm getting tryin to finish this thermostat swap, & coolant/heater core flush as soon as possible lol. Thanks for any helpful info you can offer me
Thats the A/C freon line. Thats for the cold settings on your AC
Edit: just noticed it was a 2yr old post lol sry
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A VIDEO ON CHANGING THE FUEL SENSOR AND FUEL PUMP ON A 2014 DODGE RAM. THEY SAY THE BEST WAY IS TO REMOVE THE TRUCK BED AND IT IS EASY TO INSTALL.👈🏿. YOU MIGHT NEED A FEW HELPING HANDS TO DO IT.
It would have to rinse the entire cooling system, so the dirt would keep the killer from heating again.
Great info. Thanks!
I have a 07 ford explorer. I am having over heating issues. Its not a head gasket. Started with the heat only working when I was on the gas. Then one day as I was driving the temp gauge kept going hot to cold. I replaced the thermostat, the radiator, sensor, noticed it leaking and changed water pump... It still overhears within 5mins of driving. Any advice?

Me again, THANK YOU!
Great Video!!
Well did you start truck to see if it worked did I miss that part ....
Why am I leaking coolant now? Is it a bad heater core?
Can you just swap the hoses and let the vehicle do the work?
I did several flushes on my 98 camry, went around with water in it for about a month. When I put coolant in it, it started leaking from water pump. Any advice?
+MerkinMuffly It was probably leaking with water in the system, just the water was evaporating before you would see it on the ground. If the water pump or seal around it is leaking. You should replace the water pump.
Thanks for the tip 👍
