  • Today we take a look at the tram system of the Dutch city of Amsterdam, which dates back to 1875 and is the largest in The Netherlands, and one of the largest in Europe. It consists of 200 trams, over half of which are the Siemens-built Combino type, running in a 5-module configuration.
We also see the older BN built trams, of which some are double ended for use on Route 5. The system radiates mainly out of 2 stops at Amsterdam Central station and proceeds out into the suburbs, mostly on standard double track, but with some short sections of single track or "gauntlet track." Most of the lines run in the street, but in places they also run in open ballasted track. A feature of the Amsterdam tram system is the inclusion of four Grand Unions of track, of which two are featured here, although not all legs see regular use.
It is fair to say (from the point of view of an enthusiast not from Europe) that the Amsterdam system warrants several days to fully explore.
Edit: In the video I have incorrectly said that Route 2 goes to New Lakes. It does not. Route 2 towards goes to Nieuw Sloten, which translates as "New Locks." My apologies to my Dutch viewers for this error. 😎
Thanks for watching! If you like what you see, please "like," subscribe, click on the bell, and give me a "thumbs up" !!! There is considerable effort - sometimes days of work - in producing these videos.
There are many more videos on this channel to watch, with more being made generally every week.
