I usually don’t like these types of videos where the visuals aren’t there but your vocal guidance helped me visualize exactly what you were talking abt and what it was that you were removing. Im 18 and I like to diy what I to my 2004 shoe box and save a couple bucks. Also being familiar w components of a vehicle is a skill I’d like to apply throughout my life which is more valuable to me.
Great video! I need to replace my water pump so I ordered the thermostat at the same time. The thermostat replacement work looks pretty straightforward. Much appreciated.
Excellent video. I pulled the front fascia off And a little plastic panel that fits right beside the radiator and I was able to access the thermostat housing from directly in front.
Thanks for the video. My buddy’s XD was randomly overheating. New radiator fresh coolant. Water pump is quiet. No water in oil. This is the only thing I think it could be.
Great video. Helped me in my '08 Corolla S radiator upgrade research (the tC, xD, and Corolla share similar cooling components, trying to see if i can retrofit a Mishimoto Performance radiator meant for a Scion tC. So far it seems very likely to work with some purchases of OEM parts). You gave me the best view of that bottom hose/thermostat housing. I'll have to pray I can gain bottom access like this instead of taking the alternator off like in the Corolla tutorials. Thanks for your upload.
Hey Jakub, where were you when I was doing this? Thank you for showing us that because I didn't know that. So, you're hired Jakub and it's your turn to clean the bathrooms ;-)
Jakub Mondel. True that but you need the hose out of the way anyway and sometimes the drain cock is froze shut or could break so I would choose the hose first
That was awesome Scott, my xb just started to overheat and I'm going to change out the thermostat first and then do the sensor if it still doesn't help.
I experienced the gasket on the edge of the thermostat getting stuck in the groove where the thermostat sits. A pick may be needed or anything to pry it out
Thanks for doing this! I'll be doing this job next week for my 2005 xB and have a question about installing the new thermostat. When installing the new thermostat, is there an indicator on it for proper seating? I remember reading somewhere that it can be within 10 degrees within spec.
Mike the Thermostat will sit in a little lip inside the tstat housing. You will feel it settle into place and stay there while you put the top piece on. Not sure what you mean by 10 degree within spec.
@@scottrigg996 the jiggle valve at 12:00 and 10* either way is spec, I am told. apparently this is a engineering whohah with toyota and others. On other vehicles they say to put it at 6:00....sooo it is supposed to help with air trapped inside or pressure or some such crap
Great video, brother! My kids 2006 Scion xB is overheating and loosing coolant. Just replaced the waterpump earlier tjis year and radiator has no evidence of leaking anywhere. So i will now be replacing the thermostat. Did you need to replace the heating sensor or was that just preventive maintenance? Anyhow, i appreciate you, now wish me luck doing this job 🙏
Abel, you ask a really good question. I didn't know the answer so I googled it and got this answer; "The coolant temperature sensor is used to measure the temperature of the engine coolant of an internal combustion engine. The readings from this sensor are then fed back to the engine control unit (ECU), which uses this data to adjust the fuel injection and ignition timing. On some vehicles the sensor may also be used to switch on the electric cooling fan. The data may also be used to provide readings for a coolant temperature gauge on the dashboard." Hope this helps.
My fan still not working. I tested the radiator motor and the fan it’s working but when I plug it in it’s not working. Is it the relay or fuse problem? If the sensor is not working does it stop the fan from working also?
I just got a Toyota Scion XA 1.5 I hope it's just the same and I have barely gotten the chance to do anything with it and I seem to have some issues already and I'm upset because I think the dealer New about that sensor and that's why they would always start it if I was going to drive it and let it run for a while before I actually got in because that like goes away
please also make sure when you are using it that it has free airflow from the bottom of the pc. If it is sitting on a fabric or something that blocks airflow that could be the culprit..
Scott Rigg .ok. thanks. We can all use this information as reference to when parts go bad. My 06 xb has 125k. Front wheel bearings went bad at 108k miles. Alternator at 105k miles. Ignition coils at 110k miles.
@@scottrigg996 My Box has 94K on it. Ive had a lot of problems with mine. This car does not like being left outside. I garage it now in the winter. At about 50-60K miles I had to replace the fuel injector silicone seals. It was like $40 at O'reillys. Fuel was actually squirting onto the engine. I thought I had an exhaust leak. nope. glad I never had an engine fire.
awesome video. all thumps up 👍 i was driving this morning and my 04 xb started flashing some lights. first the Battery light came on then the temp light started flashing. any idea what can that be. any help on that guys ???
I think your car is over heating. Let it cool down and check to see if you have coolant in the radiator, if you do your thermostat might be sticking closed and you need to replace it. Good luck.
My belt once came off making lights come on..belt on...now p0117 I believe came on change the sensor now the red coolant lights flashes but not running hot
I looked up the code and found several responses, here are 2; P0117 ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) Sensor Circuit Low Voltage: The purpose of this code is as a diagnostic check for a resistance corresponding to a very high engine coolant temperature. The check is enabled whenever the engine computer ECM (Engine Control Module) or PCM (Powertrain Control Module) is powered. What does po117 mean? P0117 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for "Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Circuit Low Output Problem". This can happen for multiple reasons and a mechanic needs to diagnose the specific cause for this code to be triggered in your situation.
you are right. The challenge is the white thing is plastic and as it ages it gets brittle and when you try to unscrew it you risk braking it off. My way avoids that potintial problem

7 years later this is a great video
The level of clarity and detail in your video was exceptional thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!

I did all of that and I know radiator motor it’s working but no sigh of fan spinning when I plugged in the power to the radiator!

glad the vid helped, best of luck in your future repairs
Thank you sir you just saved me Alot of money
You know that white plug in the bottom of the radiator (visible at 1.20) makes it easier to drain vs the mess you made

First timer showing first timers how to drsin coolant for the first time
its called a drain cock. yes its called a drain cock.
Jakub Mondel. True that but you need the hose out of the way anyway and sometimes the drain cock is froze shut or could break so I would choose the hose first
Thanks for making the video and I liked how you did the added bonus with the sensor at the end.
Amazing video thorough and straight to the point. Thanks!
That was awesome Scott, my xb just started to overheat and I'm going to change out the thermostat first and then do the sensor if it still doesn't help.
Thanks, good luck in your efforts, it's pretty awkward getting at those nuts on the T-stat housing but if I can do it I know you can.
I experienced the gasket on the edge of the thermostat getting stuck in the groove where the thermostat sits. A pick may be needed or anything to pry it out
This video applied and is the same for all the Scion XA because it has the same 1.5 engine.
Nice Job / Tutorial. This can/will be very helpful for someone to perform this job and/or save them much labor costs.
Thanks Larry, that's why I do these, trying to be helpful. I use youtube videos to help me so I'm just trying to return the favor.
Great work and camera angels helps a lot. Hope
To see more vids of yours in future. 👍🏻

heating sensor replacement was preventive. Have you checked the oil to make sure you don't have a bad head gasket?
Does this sensor control the cooling fan?
Abel, you ask a really good question. I didn't know the answer so I googled it and got this answer;

I have a MW water temp gauge with a probe that goes directly into a fitting on the top radiator hose. Will this bypass the sensor?
I bet it does, but ask a mechanic, just to be sure.
What kind of Gas Mileage did you get with your 1st Gen ? I get about 27 to 28mpg.
same for me
My fan still not working. I tested the radiator motor and the fan it’s working but when I plug it in it’s not working. Is it the relay or fuse problem? If the sensor is not working does it stop the fan from working also?
the fan will come on when the temp rises to a predetermmined heat. Are you expecting the fan to run when the motor is cold?
Why did u need to replace the sensor?
turns out the sensor was bad

Did you have to reset the code that popped up ? Or the car just started up ?
Sorry Julius, been so long ago I don't remember, DOH!
Why did you change these parts?
My thermostat was sticking closed and car was overheating
is it the same for Toyota XA 2007?
sorry, I have no idea, best of luck
My 2004 has been running a little hot. At idle it gets to about 220. Scares me. I ordered the thermostat, hoping that will fix it.

How many miles did your xb had when thermostat needed replacement. I have an 06 with 125k miles.
I was over 150K

I have a question does the thermostat have a casket ?????
I think you mean Gasket? and yes at about 3:10 in the video I show the rubber gasket that fits onto the T stat.
That’s where the thermostat goes after it has died
See the white thing left of the lower hose? That unscrews to allow the radiator to drain without having to take off the hose!!!
you are right. The challenge is the white thing is plastic and as it ages it gets brittle and when you try to unscrew it you risk braking it off. My way avoids that potintial problem
Good video very good explanation how to do it thanks.
Anyone know the torque specs on bolts for thermostat housing ?
Try calling the dealership and asking them. Good luck.
Do you know the codes that was showing up on the reader to determine it was thermostat and sensor?
sorry, I don't
P0420 for myself
My father in law needs this job done on his car, i'm not looking forward to it wish me success folks.
thank you
Be careful removing the volts from the bottom part they easily stripped
Good job.
Thank you
You're welcome
