I went to Amy's concert in São Paulo, Brazil, in the year she died, 2011. I had the privilege of seeing her live; but she wasn't well at the time. Even so, it's a memory for life. No one will ever be like Amy.
i hope you understand how lucky you are! i’m from uruguay and if i was my age in 2011 i would’ve travelled to brazil just to get this experience. sadly i was 6 at the time, but i rewatch those raw videos from the crowd every time. 🥰
What a fucking reaction 😍 Amy is one of my favourite artists of all time. Really glad you liked Love is a losing game! Tears dry on their own wake up alone and he can only hold her are some of my other favs off of the album. Great stuff Ben ❤️ Amy was also a major inspiration for Adele ❤️ RIP Amy x
Adele has said that Amy was one of the greatest British artists of all time. Amy's debut album 'Frank' was also very meaningful as it inspired her to start playing guitar!
Ooh this is another great album pick! Top 10 in my list, no question! My faves are "Me and Mr. Jones," "Tears Dry on Their Own," "Back to Black," and "Some Unholy War."
This is my favorite album of the 2000's. Nelly Furtado's Loose & Madonna's Confessions On a Dance Floor are close though. Amy had such an interesting and unique voice. I could listen to her non-stop. I can't even name a favorite song cause all of them are stunning
Loved the reaction! you need to react to her debut ''Frank'', is so good and even better than back to black! ''In my bed'' is so underrated, also tears dry on their own is my absolutely fav from amy
Me and Mr Jones is about the rapper Nas and how she loved him as an artist and was disappointed by a boyfriend who didn't get her tickets to see his show. In response after she died Nas took an unreleased sample of hers and made a song called Cherry Wine which is in reference to her guitar that she named Cherry. She has spoken so much about this album - I remember bopping to this at 8 years old when it came out so nice to revisit it today.
Hey Ben! I have a request - Of Monsters and Men. They're an Icelandic band that are seriously underated. I'd love to hear your thoughts on them :D My Head Is An Animal is their first album. You might recoginise the song Little Talks.
Such a great album. Great you had the opportunity to discover it properly. In the song “Rehab”, Amy makes references to Ray and Mr. Hathaway being Ray Charles and Danny Hathaway, two classic soul artists who helped shape her music style.
Also, it’s funny you mentioned you got James Bond vibes. An article from Billboard: “While the James Bond movie franchise is known for its action, adventure and blockbuster ticket sales, the films have become equally popular for their timeless, signature theme songs. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, published Friday (Sept. 30), longtime producer Barbara Broccoli discussed Amazon Prime’s new documentary The Sound of 007 - which explores the making of the James Bond themes throughout the years - and shed light on the Amy Winehouse theme song that sadly never came to fruition. Broccoli recalled meeting with Winehouse to create a theme for 2008’s Quantum of Solace, but due to the singer’s emotional state at the time, the producer said, penning a theme song for the movie did not work out.”
I absolutely adore this album and Amy Winehouse. Please listen to Frank if you haven't already. This album was also ranked 33 on the Rolling Stone's greatest albums of all time. I was very young when she died so unfortunately never got to see her in concert but here in the UK she still such a big deal. My favourite songs are You Know I'm No Good, Me & Mr. Jones, Wake Up Alone, Love Is A Losing Game, Just Friends, Some Unholy War, and Addicted which is think is such an underrated song.
Me & Mr. Jones is about her friend the rapper Nas who they shared the same producer and same birthday 14th of September. She also sampled Nas' 'Made You Look' on her song 'In My Bed' from her album Frank.
I remember my sister telling me about her concert in Florianópolis/Brazil in 2011. She said she wished she could enjoy it more but the concert was a train wreck. She told me it was obvious Amy was in really bad shape, so much so that when she passed my sister was heartbroken but wasn't shocked at all. RIP Amy, you will be forever cherished and remembered.
19:10 She actually wrote this song the same time as 'Frank'. There is video of her singing it before 'Back To Black' came out. It's about her friend's boyfriend coming around and smoking all of her weed. It's got such a humorous tone to it.
This is a brilliant album, as a piece of work it's fantastic and Amy's voice is just.... she may have less range than someone like Mariah, but the emotion and tone is just everything. Incredible. Would love some other UK artist reactions. The UK Girlbands are always brilliant like Sugababes, Spice Girls, All Saints, Girls Aloud.
Yeah her voice is like no other, so unique and regardless of anything else it's so easy to listen to! 🥹 Spice Girls are my favourite girl band of all time hehe! The other I probably only know a couple of songs here and there tho!
@@bennshouts Sugababes would be a great one to go through, their work is more interesting than other girl groups (especially the early stuff, they made their first album at 15 years old!). They had a very tumultuous history, with line-up changes and in fighting and their sound and vibe changes dramatically over the years. If you ever do them, I wouldn't bother doing albums as only really their first and most recent album are any good as whole works, but going through all their singles and videos would be brilliant, they have some absolute belters. Overload, Freak Like me, Round Round, Push the Button and About you now are bangers. And I'm here for all the Spice Girls content regardless of if you know it all or not!
20:52 Yes Adele has said multiple times that Amy's 'Frank' was a huge inspiration and got her into writing her own music. Without Amy Winehouse there would be no Adele. Fun fact they went to the same school.
But what about Frank? A very different album, sonically. Frank is longer & has jazzier vibes where B2B is more 60s inspired with a soul & funk edge. Strong songwriting & vocals on both. Frank is sassier & less tortured as Winehouse was visibly healthier & still in the breakthrough phase of her career. F**k Me Pumps put her on the map. A send up of jet-setting thot groupies whose lives are funded by the rich men with whom they hook up.
For context the whole album is about her heartbreak when her boyfriend Blake Fielder-Civil left her for his ex. She was also dealing with the loss of her beloved grandma. She later got back with Blake and married him. He has admitted to introducing her to hard drugs. Also the producers on this albums are Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi (who produced Frank).
It's not like that! When Amy composed Back to Black she still didn't use drugs, that was when she got back with Blake and that was after Back to Black started to be a success.
@@terrencelovesyou4506 . Her marriage to Blake was toxic, but she was into drugs before then … did that iclude heroin? Who knows for sure. Ironically, Rehab was all about not getting help for the addiction that eventually killed her.
It’s not. Back to Black came out in 2006. She didn’t using hard drugs until the following year in 2007. She wrote most of the album in late 2005 and said it herself that Black referred to a very dark state of mind when Blake cheated on her while she was on a trip in Spain. It’s in the documentary about her too from 2015.

Loved that I picked up on the Adele inspo! Makes so much sense!
Thank you sm! 🥹❤️❤️❤️
7:52 My favourite line in 'Just Friends' is I wanna touch you but that just hurts. The way she just sings it gets me every time.

Still yet to hear Madonna’s, but yes to Nelly have heard some of those tracks!
Agree, I feel like her album is just a constant loop which is stunning!

One of my favourites ever. Her voice, her writing - such a genius. I came to love every song, not just the initial standouts.
I can see this!!

Amy's voice extended into the 6th octave as evidenced on songs like Take the Box. She had plenty vocal range, but used it differently.

React to Tinashe’s new album quantum baby (it's coming out this Friday tho)

First song is rehab last is addicted 🥰
You should definitely react to frank
Hi Lisss JADE =new Angel of my dreams
Favourite album and I don't even listen to jazz
It's not really a jazz album. Her first album is though. This one takes inspiration from 1960s girl groups.
What a loss to music. Such a shame

Wake Up Alone is SO well written/sung. So vivid and accurate.
You clip the songs and they're short anyway, then you talk all over the small amount of the songs you played. Not a good review, sorry.
Everyone else manages it fine
