My dad and I played and watched pool together all the time. He actually beat Willy Mosconi in a game of straight pool to 100 when my dad was out of the military and bouncing back at his father’s bar. The first time he saw Efran he said “that’s what the world has been waiting for. Someone who’s truly better than everyone else ever. He will revolutionize the game in ways even Willy didn’t. That was in 1994. Dad, I know you’re not here anymore, but my God were you ever right!
@@rupertwelch893 I said he beat him in A game bro 😂 The first game. My dad really could legit run a hundred balls straight - I saw him do it after picking up a que again after a decade within 2 years of practice. What I should have added is that Willy won the next 5 games. I obviously wasn’t there dude, but my dad was the opposite of braggadocio. Ie. I found out about all he actually did in Vietnam after he died when I was selected to deliver his eulogy. I have no reason to doubt the validity of anything that man said. The story was to tell then 12yo me watching Efren for the first time what a legend Willy was. He taught through various means, and real life stories were part of his methods.
I beat him too, but it was a demonstration match for Brunswick! He would break them loose so he could run out! But he liked it if you ran out, he got paid either way! I think it was to 125. I was too young to be there, but looked older😊
Thank you so much for uploading this. Mr. Reyes has been a hero of mine on the table since I first watched him play as a kid. The confidence he displays when choosing his shots and his incredible sportsmanship are legendary. Truly a league above.
This was a really good one! Young American against a much older and experienced Efren. John was very precise and conservative in his playing. That’s typical of youth and it’s smart. The beginning rack, trading all those safety’s on the one ball was super fun and frustrating. I’ve watched Efren play so many times, I can almost feel what he’s feeling during this little cat and mouse game with the kid. Now, John would have never considered attempting a long bank kick shot to sink the one, but to Efren? Just a flashy way to make the kid pee a little. 😂 That set the whole mood of the match. What I’ve always admired about Efren since I was a little kid and he was about 18, is that he didn’t celebrate great shots. That’s not the Filipino way. A smile and a nod is all you get. Maybe no reaction at all. But Americans tend to jump around and scream when they make a great shot. And living in Hawaii most my life, being a white guy myself, it’s really embarrassing sometimes to watch cocky Americans play. I always tried to imitate my hero Efren Reyes. But John here isn’t jumping around and celebrating anything during this entire match. That’s because he peed his pants in the very beginning and it’s only gone downhill from there. Still, he’s making seriously nice clean shots and setups. Amazingly good for his age. But ole’ Bata is playing the long game. And he did make a few mistakes, but something about those “mistakes” seemed almost intentional. I thought, “He’s toying with the kid…keeping it tight. Nice. Respectful. Cunning. Treacherous.” That’s like every Filipino player I’ve ever played man. I usually knew at first glance around a bar, which Filipino was faking good and which ones were really good. Simple observation. The one with dirt under his fingernails is an amateur. The pro is super clean. Smells good. Smiles a lot but never yells. Super nice and polite. Watch out for that guy. He’s going to win all your money and you’ll still like him as a person. It’s just respect. He’s earned it. But something I’ve found with a few Filipino pool sharks, is that they’ll see a slow night and lose just enough on purpose, for you to break even. It’s a wash anyway, he doesn’t care. Nobody wins, nobody loses, everyone is happy, it was a good time. I’ve played some very intense and mean Filipinos but guess what? They sucked. It’s those calm, clean, and quiet ones that scare me. Only at the table though. I don’t fear these guys in the alley behind the bar because one, they walk out the front door, and two, they’d never park their gold and purple Mercedes in the back alley anyway. And, they have all your money. But of course Efren is old school. “Manu” to everyone younger than him. Uncle. Hawaii has the same sort of respect for our elders. Any man older than you by a few years is “uncle”. Doesn’t matter you’re not related. Every woman that same age is “Auntie”. Very simple. You don’t even have to remember anyones’s names. It’s even more respectful NOT to say someone’s name sometimes. “Just say ‘uncle’, we know who you’re talking about…” I spent my life on the beach, surfing the North Shore and played music at huge parties on the beach. Every time some kid screams, “Uncle! Uncle! Watch this!” Every man older than that screaming kid turns and looks. To see if it’s a niece or nephew you’re familiar with, or a new one you just inherited. Because they’re all yours either way. And there’s this cool pride that happens when that kid is calling ME uncle. I’ve never seen him before but I’m his uncle so it’s my job pay attention to whatever he’s exited about at the moment. And everyone is watching what you do. The elders are watching. You better be family now. And I’m not stupid so I jump up, and help the kid catch a handful of sand turtles ( they’re tiny sand crabs) Just laughing and playing with people I don’t know except I’m uncle to most of them. It’s a really beautiful open culture. Everything is shared. The family unit extends far beyond the immediate family. It’s something that becomes natural in the islands. Just a way of life. I have thousands of nieces and nephews. Some I haven’t met yet. Some I never will. Strangely, I worry about them all. Not personally, it’s bigger than that. So Efren could have easily won this match quicker than he did. I think he saw the boy like a nephew. “He’s getting good, he’s so young still. I’m not gonna just destroy him in front of his family. That would be rude. I’ll keep this as close as I can.” Efren “Bata” Reyes is indeed the G.O.A.T. in many more ways than one. And he’s of course my uncle.
@@John-jl4to , Yep. We didn’t see those games as it was edited for time, but yeah. We saw the score during different clips and it got a little sketchy for Efren during the match. John is scary good. But he isn’t magic like Efren. Still, my favorite matchup I’ve seen. Great playing!
Good match. I finally saw a few good break shots, just a few! In my day 10,12 racks of 9 ball happened in money games frequently ! Because of the break shots! I feel like a secret holder!
Efren is the all time champion. When he gets a little behind, he runs the table for 3 or 4 consecutive racks and regains the lead. If I were to play a game of pool with him I would want him to use a baseball bat for a cue, shoot all shots left handed and wear a total blindfold part of the time and I still couldn't beat him! Charles "Chuck" Neely
If anyone like me, has trouble watching these, I found it is much easier watching them with the sound all the way down to shut off the bias commentary and just watch Efren Reyes and his opponent play. Of course, the stupid memes will unfortunately still pop up. Does anyone know where we can watch these without a stupid interruption over the original commentary.
funny how Efren was an extremely humble man, so unlike his fans who tell us what we already know. Let us watch in peace and the silly add-ons that never happened!
Facing a legend such as Efren add some stress to any great younger players. But that’s an advantage Efren truly deserves and others will also have to work hard and long to overcome it. Talent alone is not sufficient against Efren. You must also obtain the mental right to defeat him.
