I have been teasing this series for a very long time...ever since I did the Sega Arcade Racing Retrospective last year...and that's because it took a VERY LONG TIME to make...a thirty episode retrospective on every Sega Model 1, Sega Model 2 and Sega Model 3 arcade game ever made that isnt a racing title! Because Sega is the undisputed (in my opinion) king of retro gaming in arcades whether it be 2D or 3D!
Just don't expect Daytona USA, Scud Race or Sega Rally...as that already happened back in 2023! Check the playlists!
But the Sega Model series of arcade boards are filled to the bring with some of the best Sega games of all time...as well as some Sega Hidden Gems!
Patreon Thanks: Seth Peterson, John Thompson, Paul Daniel, Porch, Jon Anderson, RayceARoni, Kurangui, Jason Hixon, Alex Tessler, Jonathan Leung, Martin Donlon, Tom Van Deusen, Barabob, Steve Randall, Ahab, K-2, Renaissance 2K, Ivar Wennerholm, Adrien Sebbane,
tobemorecrazy, Mike Puelinckx, Tony Escobar, H7, Humanoide70, Ben Parfitt, Holder Schmidt, Tim Lehner, Shad Uttam, Dan L, James Mann, Richard Schneider, Coupon Joe, Sunder Raj, Dorfus the Maple Syrup Man, John Booty and Craig M!
Up next: Star Wars Trilogy Arcade. It's a pseudo sequel to Star Wars Arcade on the original Sega Model 1 arcade board and its basically if The House of the Dead or Virtua Cop / Time Crisis took place in space...as its really just an arcade lightgun game wrapped around the Star Wars universe...in the best way possible! And since it never got a home console port its an arcade exclusive Star Wars game and a Sega hidden gem! Should have come to Dreamcast IMO so it could have been a Dreamcast hidden gem!
and the best part is you can use the "Supermodel Emulator" to play the arcade original if you don't have an original arcade PCB!

Seeing this as a 9 year old in arcades was just freaking incredible.
AT-AT: All Terrain - Armored Transport
AT-ST (Chicken Walkers): All Terrain - Scout Transport
@@mbe102 Yes chicken walkers!
So that means there is an AT-DR? All terrain drag racer? Haha
Lol never heard this
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah it's like a speeder bike. 😁
AT-AT aka: Giant Robot Camels
I'm a big [pre-Disney] Stat Wars fan and this is one of my all time favorite arcade games alongside Konami X-Men, Time Crisis, House of the Dead 2, Galaga, and Street Fighter 2. BTW for those who aren't Star Wars nerds, the little walkers in level 2 are called "AT-STs".
Someone else told me their name haha. I’m sure me NOT knowing drives some people nuts
The sheer 'cleanliness (as I would describe it') of the graphics alone makes it look like a must play.
Model 3 has aged the best of this gen IMO
I remember my local movie theatre arcade getting a deluxe sit-down unit 2 weeks before the Phantom Menace came out. I went back the day Phantom Menace opened and the line to play this game was nearly as long as getting tickets.
Oh I bet. More fun too haha
What a coincidence! This was my first game I played in an arcade when first coming to Japan about 25 years ago... There was a line for it... I was just thinking about it this morning!
Isn’t it weird when life kind of just feels like a sim that glitched? Lol
Synchronicity is real 😅
As a Sega and Star wars fan…this game is immediately after Outrun 2SP, Daytona 2 and Afterburner Climax in terms of arcade goodness for me…
A good crowd to be included in
A masterfully made game
In the Model 2 and 3 era Sega was just nailing every game
I would definitely like to play this since it focuses on the original trilogy. I’ve seen all of the star wars films and those are the only ones I say are actually good
Has to be one of my favorite Star War games VGE. WOW! What fond memories playing this in the arcades. 8^)
Anthony..
It’s def my fav that’s for sure
That's Endor below the 2nd death star.
Absolutely love this game. I used to 1 CC it with frenetic mashing of the joystick and twitch aiming but only in the sit down one
It’s a classic and not an easy game either
i played this game every time that i saw it in arcades when i was a kid and I got it down to two credits to complete the game. The only part that I sucked at was the lightsaber mini games. The inverted flight controls with the light saber broke my brain every time.
Last planet is Endor. Its the planet you're on with the speeder bikes.
They break my brain too. Honestly IMO game could use a modded rom just to swap those segments
I completely forgot about this game but it brought back so many memories
Time to play it again!
This is the best Star Wars game for me. You have Sega who made brilliant arcade games, and Star Wars just featuring the original 3 films. Everything after leaves me cold.
I agree a couple of the stages are slower paced, but to get the most out of it you have to engage with the scoring system - which is don't miss shots and get consecutive kills. Played that way it has brilliant pacing as the on foot section really reward accuracy.
It's not too difficult to 1CC so it's an almost perfectly paced arcade game.
Played with a lightgun enhances everything about it, particularly thé lightsaber duels. It has almost 1:1 mapping and those bonus levels are a great little mix up in the action.
Up there with Outrun 2 as one of Sega's best. If only they had made Battle Pod - which looks fantastic but lacks the gameplay of this.
It’s def my fav. But the good thing is there’s a ton of good SW games so people have lots to pick from
Rogue Squadron 2 or 3 is probably my favorite Star Wars game.
Haven’t played those in forever
RS2 is incredible. Having that as a GameCube launch game was absolutely amazing, it looked better than any console game that came before it.
@@brandogg Yes it's absolutely great. The sequel is good too, especially the 2-player version of RS2.
Omg I played this game at family fun center back in '99 😊 I'm not the biggest star wars fan but I loved this game and always wondered why it was never brought to home consoles
I always wondered that too. Probably licensing
I'm playing it in Supermodel and the hardest thing is getting the controls to feel anything like I remember from the arcade. I have a decent analog stick gamepad, the trick is getting the computer to register it in the game at the right cursor speed. I can use the mouse in a pinch, I'm running it through both MouseKeys and AntiMicro, and so for precision shots like the second death star or the assists in Hoth I have to use the mouse or get very lucky. The fun of the walking levels is in getting high combos by not missing any shots and finding all the secrets like when to use the event button to trigger helpers for extra points, it's a different kind of action than the ship combat. Of course if you just blast away the same way it's not going to be as fun, you're playing the game wrong, according to how it's been designed.
I'm surprised you didn't even mention the best part, the lightsaber combat bonus levels, a duel with Boba Fett after clearing two stages and with Darth Vader after all three, and given that you use Luke's green lightsaber and blow up the death star, I think for most of the game you're meant to be playing as Luke, with the run through echo base being probably Han or Leia. You have to be a main character or else why are you boarding the Falcon? And then you're Luke or Leia on the speeder bikes and Han or Leia outside the base. If you didn't like the lightsaber parts I have to think that has a lot to do with why you didn't like the movies, that's supposed to trigger a 'cool' response in your brain that seems to be missing.
Anyway, if Top Gun Maverick was referencing Star Wars with them blowing off the hatch first, it was just replicating the ending of The Force Awakens, where they have to bomb a hole in the oscillator from outside, then fly inside and bomb the core separately. The real reason for the no hatch was addressed in Rogue One, because it's an intentional self destruct mechanism. If you're wondering why the Empire doesn't go around putting hatches on every exhaust port just in case, it's the same logic that keeps them from installing railing by all the deadly pits. They are on a budget.
Get a flight stick. Makes a world of difference
Best Star Wars Game Ever!!!
I think so haha
Sega should have ported Model 3 games to PS4. I'd buy them.
It makes no sense to me that they took the super-cautious approach, only really releasing Yakuza games. And, Border Break which was phenomenally popular in Japan never got an English translation.
Sega does weird stuff
best star wras game to me personally
I’d def agree
"I am a casual Star Wars movie fan"
"It's treason then"
Man, I remember in 2009 they were clearing some old arcade cabinets in the local mall, makes me wish I had the dough to buy some of them including Star Wars.
Lol I just never got into Star Wars. Never hit me
We have a cab at a restaurant in Green Bay. Star Wars themed cheesesteak and burger place called Cheesesteak Rebellion. Unfortunately it has been out of order for months (while still powered on and running in attract mode!)
That name. Amazing!
I thought this was the game you control with a stick with a button on top. I remember you get to choose your stage and you both shoot from a ship and fight Darth Vader with you light saber.
It is that game :)
@@VideoGameEsoterica Amazing! I haven't played it since ~1997
Time to play again!
Looks even more incredible all scaled up, wow! Love it, the best Star Wars game. Top Gun Maverick’s third act was very Star Wars🤘🏻What controller are you using for this btw?
Same. I've always been only a casual Star Wars fan. Heck, I enjoy the prequel trilogy more than the original trilogy! 😎
Haha people might be extra mad reading that
I aim to please!
I still wish so badly they’d release this on consoles. There was a plan to release it on Dreamcast & the rumor was there would be an Episode 1 bonus level at the end because it was around the time Episode 1 was released. Obviously they cancelled that plan! I still hold out a tiny bit of hope that they’ll make it, but in the meantime, like you, supermodel 3 is scratching that itch!
So many good games could have come to Dreamcast that never did
The best Star Wars game.
I’d tend to agree
@@VideoGameEsoterica Good.
I love the original vector based Star Wars Arcade game but I don't mind playing the new Star Wars Battle Pod game on the TechnoParrot Emulator
Vector was before my time
It's probably a bit much to ask for , but wtf why didn't Sega make a Sega Saturn & Dreamcast port ? 😕
My guess on this is licensing
How is this so clear btw? Is there a way to screen record the actual arcade game? Sorry for the basic question
Are the duel missions supposed to have inverted controls? I played the machine at an old arcade a few weeks ago, and i was very confused when i got to Boba Fett and was suddenly aiming down when i wanted to aim up.
Yes they invert for that sequence. Not a great move
@@VideoGameEsoterica I'll say. Threw me off completely when I got to the Boba fight, and even when I got to Vader I was struggling!
@silhouettoofaman2935 yes it’s such an instant change it’s so hard to manage
@@VideoGameEsoterica I wonder if there's a way to change that in the options/debug menu?
I will never forgive Sega for the cancelled dreamcast port of this.
It was a bummer
The two-legged walkers are AT-STs.
Noted. My Star Wars knowledge is thin
@@VideoGameEsoterica We called them chicken walkers in my family back in the day.
(c) 2024 u mean at the end... yeah model 3 and good too see supermodel smooth as it wasn't when I was repairing the arcade machine about 2-3 years ago. Got one coming up so maybe an option... considering that the game is really basic inside and straight PC will do
This was made in 2023. I work very far ahead haha
@@VideoGameEsoterica warp drive engaged
I’m on 2025 for some series already work wise
@@VideoGameEsoterica you need to get out more… get over to doc Mack’s 10 year/ 1000th game release next month
Maybe I’ll swing by but I get out plenty haha
Bro you forgot the Darth Vader duel...
Yes I didn’t add it this time
Is there an emulated version to play on pc?
Yes. Supermodel emulator
@@VideoGameEsoterica thank you! Easy download? New to emulating
Can I play this on my steam deck?
Yep. I have a tutorial on my playlists
@ How bout a anbernic win 600?
Ooh that I don’t know
@@VideoGameEsoterica Dang it
This was the best looking SW game until Rogue Leader appeared on the Gamecube.
I’d still say vibe wise I find this one prettier
Hello, many thanks for your work, I really need your advice and professional opinion, I recently saw a monitor from the Phillips MC15601 HD11 ultrasound equipment at a flea market, it is about 14", has BNC connectors on the back with the inscription "B", "GV", "R", "SYNC" and also VGA. On eBay such a one costs about $ 400-800. And at the flea market such a one costs 2000 rubles, tell me is this a good option for a mister, and should I expect that this monitor has a higher quality tube than in ordinary monitors.
With respect, Maxim.
That’s a medical tv basically. High quality if the tv is working.
@@VideoGameEsoterica yes, it works, is it worth buying? they sell it for only $25
@@tdmax2288 for $25? absolutely
Buy that thing now
@@VideoGameEsoterica yes, but if it's like a regular CRT monitor and nothing special? basically $25 is pennies. you can try.
It literally shows ATAT on screen
🤷🏻♂️
Not sure we can still be friends with that opinion on the movies...also mister core when!?
MiSTer 2 core when more likely
Lol man would even a mister 2 or mars be able? Never sure how model 3 compares to naomi
@gunsmithx it’s possible. It’s just not easy
