Fun Fact: Cliff Burton used his bass in such a way that there are two bass solos in this song that are commonly confused as guitar solos. The first begins at 1:42 and continues on until 2:13. The second is found much later in the song after the bass Interlude. It begins at 6:36 and continues until 6:55. The opening sounds were achieved by Cliff using a wah wah pedal on his bass. -This song was in Guitar Hero Metallica.
Read the book ‘To Live Is To Die: The Life & Death Of Metallica's Cliff Burton’. It explains exactly what the intro is. Most, if not everyone is wrong on how it was achieved. \m/!!!
The songs title Orion comes from the constellation of the same name, and is a reference to the songs "Spacey sound" bridge.. It was mostly written by late bassist Cliff Burton. It was recorded in Copenhagen. It has 3 different riffs that make up the structure of the outer layer, and a lengthy Bridge section in the inner layer. This song (instrumental) along with The Call of Ktulu (another instrumental) are incredible. Loved your reaction to this....well done boys. ...love you guys.
This piece was my introduction to the band. My friends, who knew me as the classical music nerd, sat me down and said "you of all people HAVE to hear this!" Its structure is perfect Sonata form, like movements of classical symphonies- and this is due almost entirely to Cliff Burton's background in classical music.
This song is so damn good. Cliff was amazing. He is a legend his bass solos were incredible. He brought music theory to the table in Metallica too. Rip ❤🔥
Had the pleasure of seeing Metallica at Donnington 1985......unbelievably on stage before RATT !!!!!.......Cliff Burton was a monster that day..... absolutely held it all together👏👏👏👏
Metallica had a classical musician in it. Cliff Burton, he left us too soon, I can not imagine what would Metallica’s sound be after Master of Puppets or if they would actually went on the direction of the Black Album with Cliff being around. But I’m sure would love Cliff playing with an orchestra like they did with in San Francisco CA. RIP Cliff!!❤
GREAT reaction guys!! What a wonderful way to start my Friday! Yup...this places in my top 5 Metallica songs...and I owe most, if not all of it to Cliff Burton (RIP). His bass playing was revolutionary. This track is undeniably progressive metal, and I wonder what path Metallica would've taken had Cliff lived on! I was 9 when I first heard this, from a school friend...it was unlike anything I had heard up to that point! Now as a huge Rush fan, you can tell that Cliff was influenced by Geddy. Cheers from Canada, eh!!
Cliff Burton is one of the best bassists to ever play bass and live his life was taken waaayyyyy toooooo early. His presence and performance will never be duplicated in our lifetime. RIP Cliff Burton ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I'm listening to Metallica for more than 25 years, this year i was lucky to see them live for the 4th time of my life, and this time they played Orion live ! It was like a teenager's dream coming true 🔥
@@Lord_Raptoranother Fun Fact: the intro of ‘My Friend of Misery’ and ‘Anesthesia:PullingTeeth’, are very close….really close to each other. It’s played a bit different, but it’s really close to each other. I would guess Jason did this as a tribute to Cliff. Just a thought. 🤔 Cheers!!!! \m/
As a bass player who plays this song, I have to agree. But I’m torn with the CRAZY running distorted wah “solos” of Ktulu is hard to dismiss. ‘To Live is To Die’ is….emotional and a great track in honor of Cliff.
MetallicA ' Orion ' - another one of their best instrumentals ... - love the ' time change ' in the middle of the song - solos, & Cliff Burton's last recordings B4 Yk what on Sept 1986 🤘🏻😆 ✌🏻😸✌🏻
A few random recommendations for metal instrumentals: Testament - Musical Death (A Dirge) Death - Cosmic Sea Death - Voice of the Soul Obituary - Redneck Stomp Gorguts - Waste of Mortality Wicked - The Stellar Sunset of Evolution And it's not metal, but Steve Vai's 'For The Love of God' is 1 of the greatest musical feats of all time (I will never be convinced otherwise). If that song doesn't move your soul, then you probably don't have one.
We miss you Cliff. I’m so happy they played this at the last show I went to. They rarely play it. My 16th time seeing the live, they finally played it. I’ll never forget it. 🤘
one for the history books for sure. 10/10 They guys were about 24-yo at when this was written and recorded.. but at 1986 prog metal didn't even exist yet.. the guys were fans of music.
@tubelious True early Metallica album were a new form of metal, people forgot how they changed music , and the genuine drum sound that made this album amazing
They started their world tour last year in Amsterdam with this song…instant chills when I heard those first notes on the bass So no, it’s not a song “to give James’ voice some rest” 😄
Many probably don't know about the Orion at the end credits of Through The Never movie. I really like that version (too). Check it out if you haven't yet.
A little star traveling courtesy of Cliff 🤘✨🖤🤘🕊🌌🌟💜🤘 Ed.. on Metallica's page today they dropped video of For Whom the Bell Tolls and Orion from San Francisco 10 years ago I just happened to notice it right after this reaction to Orion where smokey mentions For Whom the Bell Tolls LOL thought you guys should know about it
This is my favorite Metallica song. Just awesome. Check out the live versions with Cliff Burton. This song IS Cliff. You can hear his influence throughout.
it was written by Cliff Burton, it played at his funeral and to this day every time they play it James always ends it with the words "We miss you Cliff"
It’s funny you keep on bringing up Tool & Metallica together. They have been friends over the years especially Kirk & Adam. They worked with each other during Fear Inoculum were Kirk was helping Adam with guitar techniques.
I think Cliff was an amazing bass player, maybe one of the best. No disrespect to Metallica but I believe that he could have shined more for another band
If you like instrumentals like this, I highly recommend the Call of Ktulu, To Live is To Die, and Suicide and Redemption. All are masterpieces that really show off how well Metallica can sound when they let the instruments do the talking.
Good morning, Trash Talkers. G'day. Not what I expected: I don't typically associate a term like "plodding" with Metallica, and that's what came to mind in the first section. Sounds are all there, 2nd part has harmonized leads, another interesting side-trip in my view, part 3 sounds a bit more aggro, just a bit, sure, dudes, go for it. Yeah, interlude, maybe. 😊 I could go several ways with suggestions: more off 'Garage Inc.'; the cover of early Pink Floyd's 'Astronomy Dominé' by Quebec's Voivod; I'm also interested in hearing 'Mr. Soul', 'The Seeker' or 'Seven and Seven Is' by Rush from their 'Feedback EP; or early Jimi Hendrix psychedelic freakout ride 'The Stars That Play with Laughing Sam's Dice'. Any or all would be more than cool. Deuces! ✌🏼😎🎶❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊
Fun fact: the very beginning was recorded using multiple bass tracks, which is unheard of because it's a nightmare to mix properly. Shows how much they trusted cliff to come up with something that harmonically won't collide with each other. This song is mainly a showcase of Cliff's compositional abilities. But we also have to give credit to Lars for coming up with that tasty weird awesome drum beat that makes 4/4 sound like some crazy mix of odd time signatures. Yeah, hard to believe but it is fully in 4/4
I used too sit in high school art class in my rocking chair high as a kit and just veg out to this song one of best song of all time take that too the bank
The crazy time-signature you mentioned isn't actually there. The song is standard 4/4 until the slow part in the middle where it switches to 3/4. The reason it sounds like there's a crazy time-signature is because Lars throws in a weird drum fill which messes up the timing if you're trying to bob your head along with the music.
First metal I ever heard was Metallica - Kill Em All on vinyl... I was just enamored and then I heard Master Of Puppets and I was sold. Been a metal head since 1992 🤘💀🤘
And the fact Cliff Burton was the main person who helped orchestrated this song makes it 10000000000000000000 times better. I would have loved to his evolution if he was still with us. Taken to early and will always be remembered CLIFF BURTON FOREVER
All of their instrumentals are very good btw. Call of Ktulhu, To Live Is To Die are another masterpieces. And there was such thing as progressive metal when they wrote it. This is demonstration of their skills not as musicians but as composers. Thanks for reaction
definitely one of the best metal instrumental song ever...timeless 💯🔥 next : inquisition symphony from the album Schizophrenia by Sepultura...a little bit harder...a little bit faster... 🤘💥
I always loved making mix CDs or tapes of just instrumental tracks, smoking, putting on headphones and just chilling with my eyes closed. This song pretty much always made the list. If you dig instrumental tracks, check out a band called Russian Circles. They never have vocals and I would consider them prog metal. Every song is fire so I can't even give a specific recommendation
If you haven't already, you need to listen to "To Live is to Die" from "...And Justice For All." Similar in some way in build, but contains a spoken word part that is a poem Cliff Burton wrote. EDIT: "I have not heard a bad song from Master of Puppets." That's because there are no bad songs on Master of Puppets. Easily one of the greatest albums ever made.
This tune might as well be a bass solo! The intro is a four part bass harmony. The prog section has a bass intro. The interlude is pretty much all bass. There are two bass solos. Cliff was a musical genius. Rest in Peace.
