  • History friends! Grab another two rectangles of fabric and prepare to make the second layer of our Ancient Roman attire. This video is super short because this was just so easy to make!

This is a great video! I've been searching for a more historically accurate roman garment video & this is exactly what I was looking for.

Yay! That's what I am going for! It is very hard to find videos on that particular subject.

The word "stola" implies something that hangs down. "Stola" was also the word used for the hanging fabric part of a flag.

Wonderful video, I am wondering could you maybe do a 4th century Roman military tunic?

Will put it on my list! I've been working on creating some garments for my husband as well, so I can make one to his size.

Do you have suggestions for measurements for how wide it should be?

Mine was basically the width of my elbow to my other elbow if my arms were outstreched (standing with my arms out to make the letter T) I think this would work for most. I am very tall, so I don't want to give an exact measurement as it might be wrong for someone of a shorter or less broad stature.

You did not demonstrate how to sew the item. I am still in the dark

Hi! To clarify, historically, the fabric would have been woven to size, therefore the only sewing would have been from the bottom of the garment to around the waist to make a tube that is open at the top half. Then it is just pinned at the shoulders with one of the roman style pins, or you could use this also for anglo saxon if you used one of those pin/brooch styles. There is very little sewing, but because my fabric isn't woven to size I did also fell my seams and use a rolled hem on the edges.

What era are you because you are apparently wearing a silk tunica - silk wasn't really found in the republic being more of an empire era fabric - but you are wearing the stola which was so unfashionable by the era of Augustus that he had to make a law stating that they must be worn at the imperial court.

I was going for somewhere around the 1st Century, but I also was looking into the roman empire and where it met the levant area because I was using an inspiration from the purple dye made on the shores of the Tyre, where my ancestors are from. Due to this, I went with silk, because from what I had read I believed it would be available in the area of the roman empire which is where Lebanon currently is. However, I probably should have mentioned that more specifically in the video. I think I may have mentioned only briefly or in another part of my series.
