When in Rome Dress as the Romans Do: Making a Tunica, Stola, and Palla

- I organized a When in Rome homeschool day at the Northeast Georgia History Center where I work as the Director of Education as a fun way for our students to learn about Ancient Rome. For this event I needed an outfit. I researched what a roman woman would have worn and decided to make a tunica, stola, and palla inspired by the ones that are on a famous statue of Julia Augusta wife of Emperor Augustus.
This Roman garb would be a great project for a beginner who is just starting to build their historical wardrobe. It is all straight seams and rectangles. I did not use a pattern for this outfit but rather self drafted as I went with my measurements.

That looks so comfy to wear. Loved the colour combinations
Thank you so much!! It is very comfy. Probably one of my comfiest costumes to wear.
It's amazing how long rectangles of material draped and pinned correctly can look so classy. Great job with the homeschool kids!
Thank you so much!
What a fun project!!!
Thank you! It was a lot of fun to make!
❤
Love how it turned out, super colorful!
yeah the last time Joann's had wool, it was a 20% wool blend suiting, and when it went to clearance two years ago I bought just about all of what they had left (a green and a red). Such a shame they don't have wool anymore, though that blend was expensive for what it was (like $30/yard)
Thank you so much! I was very happy with the color combinations. 💙❤️💛
I do really wish Joann's had wool options, they just don't, and their "linen" is almost always a blend which also can be annoying.
@@HistoricalBelle yup🥲
I thought it was supposed to be long so you can belt the dress twice.
