    Have you ever tried a glass pen before? They're not just pretty to look at; they write pretty nicely too! Check out our Glass Pen Art video to see us draw with one: th-cam.com/video/Gw6wW4BW4fw/w-d-xo.html

      I actually have a few glass pens, and love them! I do have a question, though. I got my hubs one of his own, and, SOMEHOW, he managed to break just the tip off - it's at a slight angle and a bit sharp, instead of smooth and round. You wouldn't realize it to look at it, but writing with it is a nightmare.
      Is there anything I can do to try to salvage it, or is it something I have to retire to become a pretty decoration? Honestly, short of breaking it into pieces (it's quite gorgeous!), I'm willing to try anything to fix it. If it doesn't work, no harm, it'll just go back into my display case. But... I hate to see it not being able to be used without at LEAST trying to restore it! Thank you!

      Oh my! Never used an glass pen so when I saw this in my feed I was much fascinated by how beautiful it's crafted. The ink flowing from it, is just luxurious looking. I am very curious about the glass pen & ink that I can just use water to clean it off. Thank you 😊

    I spent the whole September journaling with my glass pens and the end result was that the inks that flowed better in my experience were Rohrer & Klingner's iron gall inks (Salix is a dark blue and features in the video, Scabiosa is a purplish color. If you're afraid to put iron gall inks in your fountain pen, glass pens are perfect to try these inks with peace of mind). It was fun and I should do it again!

    Don’t know if I can commit to the cleaning, different inks, and special paper needed to use glass pens but they are so beautifully crafted!

    • @yaroslavsky
      @yaroslavsky 3 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      I'll say this, glass pens are far more low maintenance than either dip pens, fountain pens or brush. It doesn't really NEED special paper. It just looks best with the nicer paper, but that is true of any ink medium. I'll often grade papers with a glass dip pen on the regular old ruled paper the kids use. Maintenance is literally just dipping it in water and wiping on a paper towel. That is it. As far as inks go, I don't look at it as I have to use a bunch of different inks. More like I GET to use a bunch of different inks! You can use any old fountain pen ink and one bottle will last you ages. If I could only use one bottle of low cost ink, I'd recommend Noodler's Apache Sunset which has beautiful shading that shows up on all kinds of paper. Happy writing!

      @@skymochi7777 Soo... you completely missed or purposely disregarded the very specific mentions, both in the video and the above response, that glass pens do NOT need special cleaning, NOR special inks, NOR special paper and are, therefore, much more easier and quicker in many ways than fountain pens? Somebody took the time to respond to you and you toss that with insulting them that the use of glass pens is 'bougie', which is a pretty nauseating term in my opinion, and it's not even applicable here: there are glass pens for as little as EUR 15, cheaper than most fountain pens and certainly cheaper than gel pens. Those you just toss away (think of the all the plastic wasted!) when finished, but a glass pen and a bottle of ink last ages. Furthermore - if you're sitting there in your trailer, in your track suit, writing with your glitter gel pens whilst chewing gum with your mouth open, NOT being interested in glass pens, why even watch and comment?

    • @dianedoherty9408

      Oh you really need to buy one and try it out. There are many cheaper glass pens out there- less than 10.00 / 5:21 5:21 20.00. I got my husband to buy me a Murino glass pen for our anniversary and it was gorgeous and it wrote beautifully. Well I didn’t have it for a month yet and it rolled off of the table and broke the nib( totally my fault because it wasn’t on its holder) My heart broke! I was so upset and I even reached out to Murino to see if they could fix it. They were very nice and understanding,but told me it would cost more to send it to them than the pen cost( pen cost 100.00 with a bottle of ink) Long story short I looked online and was surprised at how many glass pens there are and how inexpensive most were so of course I bought one. I think I paid less than 10.00 for it and honestly it wrote just as nice as the expensive one, I have been hooked ever since and I have about 30 glass pens and one made of crystal. You should definitely take the plunge and buy one Amazon has them also. Well I just noticed this was 2yrs. ago😅😂 I’m commenting anyway lol. I hope you have taken the plunge😊

    To add that glass pen was developed in 18th century in Italian city Murano (according to what infomation I could find)
    They had an advantage over regular dip pens of that time (and it was before fountain pen or ballpoint pen invention) in bigger 'ink reserve' thanks to multiple twisted grooves but also in a steady, same-width line.

    I used the bottom of the ink bottle (also glass) to get rid off a particularly sharp edge; I prefer a smooth feeling, I'm prone to rip paper otherwise; and also I naturally twist my pen writing, so an irregular tip was not helpful.
    Worked a lot faster than smoothing on paper [though not as rapid as I feared sand paper would be, though I didn't actually try that one myself]; that being said, faster also means faster to overdo it!

    • @JetPens
      @JetPens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi there! Generally, glass pens do not write extra fine because of their material (the finer the tip, the more fragile; the tip needs a blunt edge to make contact with the page). When writing with glass pens, it's important to write slowly. Writing speed doesn't affect the width of the line as much as how much ink is loaded on the nib. For example, lines are much wetter and thicker right after dipping the pen in ink, and they are thinner when there's little ink left.

    I have heard of glass fountain pens a few months ago, I'm still trying to figure out whether or not to buy one and if it's worth it seeing how it's so fragile. Thank you for the video

    I accidentally hit my glass pen tip on an ink bottle glass while closing the ink lid… will my glass pen break?

    I actually owned a glass pen before I owned a fountain pen! Was surprised by how long it could right before needing refill.
    Dropped my first one and broke the nib so had to buy another. Both have had one rough scratchy side. I'll have to try that rough paper trick on it.

    They work great with watercolors also, but one with no twist in the tip is best. Just brush it on tip. The straight tip works for applying masking fluid also. Experiment & have fun!

    Are they friendly for left handed people? Classic metal tip pens were a pain to use for lefties for they always broke. I always wanted to love the ink technique but they were designed to be used certain way

    I have seen a glass pen for the first time just a few months ago and I fell in love with it immediately. I don't do calligraphy but just the looks of the glass pens is so beautiful. 😍

    I got to ink the pen part and got really confused. I was like omg idk what to dooooooooo. Thankfully very generous and informative people made this video and I found my way. I didn't know i had to pick the pen up and THEN dip it on the ink. I thought it was the other way around. Simple mistake anyone could make. Kindest regards.
