38 Years Vegan! Dr. Neal Barnard of PCRM

  • Dr. Neal Barnard has been vegan since 1984. He was so kind to let me get his pitch for the book Vegan Voices but he also let me squeeze in some questions. My time was limited so I really didn't get to dig into the questions as deep as I would have loved to. It was also challenging because the building was under construction. So, there was a little audio interference I had to work around. I really hope to get Dr. Barnard for my next project, a documentary I'm excited to get started that he would be a perfect part in.
    Dr. Neal D. Barnard is the founder of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). Additionally, he is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. He opened the Barnard Medical Center in 2016 as part of PCRM, with a focus on diet and preventative medicine.

    Thank you Dr. Barnard! You are a big reason I became a whole food, no added fat, vegan 18 months ago. It’s still hard to believe the enormous physical and mental benefits I have gained since. I’ll never go back. Who knew I would love oat groats so much. Or, natural organic peanut butter on whole grain toast with a banana. Or, legumes. Or greens. Or fruit,… I’m 60 years old now, have dropped 30 pounds and am off of all of my blood pressure and cholesterol medications. I haven’t felt this good since my 20s. All of my extended family and friends ask me how I did it. I just show them one your books or videos and Dr. Michael Greger’s and tell them how it impacts my life. Three of them have changed to veganism so far. This way of eating sells itself.

    I visited once one the most "advanced" hospitals in Melbourne, Australia, and when i saw the food that they were serving, I was completely shocked.. It's clearly not a place that they want you to get healthy. They want you to make you sick with food and treat you with medications from which they take commissions. Just keeping people in the pleasure comfort trap, and no one mentioning anything about nutrition. This is a crime.

A chicken breast today has 7-10 times the saturated fat content that they had 140 years ago, so yes, that could be a problem. Also, people don't usually eat chicken breasts plain, they put things on them, like BBQ sauce, and those often have lots of sugar.

    As always, important information to a healthier life. I am a 66 year-old vegan (17 years), no meds few supplements, 5’5” 116. I’ve practiced “intermittent fasting most of my life. I also water fast 1-5 days a few times a year. Question: is autophogy a reality? At my weight should I limit longer water-only fasts? Thanks to Dr. Bernard, Dr. Campbell & Dr. Esselstyn I changed my diet which changed my life!❤️❤️❤️

    • @VeganLinked
      @VeganLinked  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for sharing. I'm not sure the docs will be able to respond. I'm not a doc but I run this channel... I love time restricted intermittent fasting and see support for that. I don't think anything else is necessary, for me anyways. If you're eating WFPBV and of a variety like Dr. Greger recommends in the Daily Dozen, which is perfection if you haven't already used it, then I don't know why you would water fast. That's typically, from my lay understanding, for people needing a "reset" because they have some underlying condition or issue, esp. if they don't eat WFPBV consistently. As for autophagy, is it a reality? I mean, that's the point of time restricted intermittent fasting, or all fasting I suppose. Dr. Greger has some awesome videos on fasting. I feel if you're just going to watch one it's the one on time restricted because again it seems to be the most efficacious. AND get the bulk of your calories in the earlier part of the day. Like Dr. Greger says eat like a king in the morning, like a prince for lunch, and like a pauper for dinner.
      It's easy and not easy. Easy in that it's just beans, greens, grains, fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, herbs & spics. Not easy in that now I have to cook. It helps to have someone else in the mix to motivate, stimulate ideas, assist, etc... And may as well feed more than one person when cooking. But, it's still advantageous flying solo to prep and cook in the kitchen because you can always do 3 plus days worth of prepping. Ok, I'm thinking outload rambling now... lol. Thanks again for sharing though!

      @@VeganLinked I appreciate your generous reply. Because I am 66 years old I take a slightly different approach then I did in my 30’s, 40’s and even 50’s. At this stage of life cell turnover slows down considerably. As I understand it water only fasting generates autophogy (clearing mutated cells/cell turnover). The longer the fast the better the results. As I understand it Autophogy is just beginning at about 18-20 hours of water only fasting so most people are not achieving the benefits I an looking to gain. I have been vegetarian for 30 years, vegan 17. I have a varied diet and prep-cooked for most of my life. I have a solid understanding and experience of WFPB eating. My question is more pointed to my age group and benefits of long term fasting. I’ve done water only fasts much of my adult life because I feel better afterwards. I have great respect for Gene and his work. I didn’t realize/pay attention to whom I was addressing my question. I will be contacting True North in the near future so will gain comprehensive fasting information there. Thanks so much for posting this video of Dr. Barnard. Keep up the good work! ❤️

    • @VeganLinked
      @VeganLinked  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@darrisnelson5223 yeah, True North is into fasting. Dr Greger covers the science well. It's been easy for me to time restrict down to 4 hours give or take, I just occasionally might without putting much thought into it. Some people squeeze it into 1 hour, Dr Amen. But I only advocate WFPBV and TR intermittent fasting since the science leans that way the most.

Doctors knowing about Nutrition will give them more tools to help their patients truly heal, like Dr. Barnard and many other docs that are my role models (Dr. Joel Fuhrman, Dr. Michael Greger, etc.). Big pharma can't stand them though, because they help patients get OFF meds! That's a real doctor! Most dieticians are misinformed as well, the Gov't guidelines have heavy meat and dairy industry funding. WFPB RDs/Nutritionists and health coaches are great though, and when they work alongside these WFPB docs for more in depth coaching with the patients, now we have a dream team. Ideally, it would work like this: A patient comes to my office, has Hypertension and Pre diabetes. I explain to the patient about the causes: Salt- constricting of blood vessels, animal products- which contain salt as well, also saturated fat which blocks insulin receptors, etc., also lack of hydration, exercise, excessive inflammation, etc. Then, I tell them about how to reverse these conditions (WFPB eating, exercise, lots of water, stress management, etc.), and I'll give them a flyer with lots of doctors, books, websites with recipes, etc. Then, I assign them to one of the WFPB RDs/Nutritionists and health coaches on my team to go over more detail, and guide the patients day to day. It's a great model!

GOING PLANT BASED is a miracle! oh and ive started doin yoga.lol...yestertday i watched Dominion,, i realised how humanity has lost its soul, the cruelty we subject animals. maybe its time to relabel animals as fellow citizens of Earth,

      @Dianne Goode Meat isn't the issue. There are numerous people that eat low/no carb and have reversed each of these issues, the problem is what else they're consuming and whether they're sedentary. If you look at people that only eat meat they lose weight naturally, without being hungry, and health issues improve as the weight comes off.
      SemiRetiredBob and FerrignoFreedom shows what happens when eating meat without carbs and seed oils. Mikhaila Peterson and her father resolved numerous health issues that even doctors couldn't fix. I'm not trying to change your eating habits, just pointing out that meat alone isn't the issue.
      FYI - Tufts University published a study that suggested Lucky Charms and Cheerios were healthier than eggs, cheese and ground beef, it's hard to believe anyone would fall for this.
