  • Help for depression could come from your next meal! There are many foods that can help ward off the blues, but there are also just as many that can cause you to become depressed.
Dr. Neal Barnard separates the good foods from the bad and reveals the best diet for depression when he joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room LIVE.
These questions are answered from the Doctor's Mailbag:
    - What are the best foods to fight depression?
    - Can a vegan diet help improve depression?
    - Will junk food help depression or make the symptoms worse?
    - Why do we crave junk food when we're depressed?
    - What are the most important nutrients for mental health?
    - Plus, many more!
Have a question? Leave it in the comments or chat and we'll get to as many as we can.

I became a vegan a few years ago and the first thing I noticed after a couple of weeks was the change in my moods. I have lived with depression and panic attacks all my life and they just disappeared but funny enough if I fell off usually with eggs my moods returned and the more healthy I eat seeds and nuts the better I feel. great show so helpful and informative thank you

My low mood is completely gone when I do weight bearing exercises. I feel elated. An 1.5 hours walk will also take away the blues. Getting out and about and breathing deeply helps loads. I no longer have depression since I became wfpb without salt oil or sugar, stopped alcohol and stopped smoking. Now I'm top of the world and the thing that drags me down is family disfunction/disharmony. Lots of people suffering since the pandemic especially mental health and eating disorders. Wish anyone struggling all the best.

I’ve been on a plant based diet for two years. To give you some background, Im 12 year post kidney transplant. I struggled with anxiety big time after my transplant. Today with diet and exercise and some strong spiritual beliefs. I’ve turned that ship around and feel like a completely new person. No meat, vegetables and exercise did this for me.

The good doctor, who I greatly respect, is missing something crucial. Blood sugar levels (both hyper and hypo). The brain, the largest consumer of blood glucose in the body, is greatly effected by blood sugar levels - and hence our thinking and mood fluctuates accordingly. Excess animal fats and proteins, causing pancreatic stagnation and less glucagon secretion, can cause mental/emotional issues. As can an excess of this hormone, or a lack of insulin. The remedy is to eat a clean vegan, or almost vegan diet as per the doctors guidelines.

Thank you for another great and informative video! I usually miss the live stream so I'm posting a question afterwards in hopes it may be addressed in a future video. I'm interested in Dr. Barnards opinion on plant based nutrition shakes; not for protein because I know they aren't needed and I am not concerned about protein, but just for general enjoyment. I occasionally have a chocolate peanut butter shake made with either Orgain or Garden of Life meal replacement powder (more of a whole nutrition powder rather than a protein powder), PB2, a banana and almond milk, just because I enjoy them. It makes me feel like I'm getting a treat and I just like them as an occasional breakfast or lunch when I'm busy or want something chocolatey. I'm curious to hear if he thinks that is ok or if they really should not be used at all. Thank you.

Other than B12, I'd consider some vitamin D2 and iodine supplements. A lot of salts are no longer iodized and many health conscious vegans avoid adding any salt to their food. The other option for iodine is sea vegetables but then you have to worry about heavy metal contamination and many vegans have diets which don't include sea vegetables. Finally, it may be worth considering an omega 3 supplement (there is some disagreement on this so do your research).

I am on Eliquis now and wonder if I change my diet drastically to plant based, low fat, how will I know how that will react with the Eliquis. Flax seeds need to be bought whole not ground. Pre-ground causes them to oxidize right away. Chia seeds don’t need to be ground at all. Buy whole flax seeds and them grind them in your smoothie as you are making it or grind them in a coffee grinder and use them right away into your smoothie or what ever you are making. They sell grinders at target and Walmart and other stores. I just throw them into my smoothie as I am making it. Probably easiest to just use chia seeds to get your Omega 3s daily. Grief and situational depression are confused with clinical depression. Grief and situational depression are normal reactions to bad situations. I know this from personal experience. That being said, a healthy diet makes Grief and situational depression easier to handle. For myself, when I am grieving or very lonely or in a bad environment, I tend to do the worst things for myself--I eat chocolate and baked goods and self-isolate and develop poor sleeping habits. I'm struggling with that now, which is why I'm watching this video.

Been on the strict, "the last heart attack diet for 10 years. However I sort of fell off of it19 months ago because of sever anxiety and I have been struggling with it or depression for 5+ years or more. I was never like this until about 5 years after I started this plant based eating very strict. No nuts, no oils. Just veggies and beans and salads with mustard and applecidar vinegar. It has done nothing for my anxiety. Maybe I'm a psycho case. My thoughts really bother me and I'm 64. I've never been crazy in my life until after being on this diet. I lost a total of 135 pounds back in 2012 but gained 35 pounds the past 18 months or so and now struggle to get that off. I just eat tons of raw oatmeal which will keep the weight on. But I need the texture to satisfy my cravings. 🙄

“I’ve never been crazy in my life until after being on this diet.” Do yourself a favor and listen to your body, it’s trying to tell you something. Put two and two together. You eat raw oats to satisfy cravings. Does that sound okay to you? I don’t know but maybe it’s time for you to reevaluate some things. Good luck.

this is the opposite of keto where as they tell you to eat high fat because it doesnt trigger the insulin surge....which contributes to diabetes and weight gain. Sugar causes obesity and diabetes. fruit sugar included apparently as well as foods like rice that are high in carbs.

I have more energy, I get stuff done when usually I dont. The foods God made are not abominations but are made for us. The American standard diet however, is not! And most of it is demonic to destroy humans. Thank you Jesus!

Refined carbs, such as pastries, pasta, and breads, are problematic causing a spike in blood sugar then a drastic drop driving people into extreme mood shifts and fatigue, rollercoaster style. I believe the American diet adopted alot of these eating habits from Europe that emphasizes refined carbs, because of the misconception that their lifestyle is more superior. They also used to smear animal fat on bread as a spread...beyond gross.

I would have social anxiety from time to time when I was eating vegan processed “meats” and processed sugar. But for the past month, I’ve been eating a whole foods plant based diet and no longer have occasional social anxiety and have never been happier in my life.
