  • According to Nick Kypreos in the Toronto Star, Ryan O'Reilly approached Nashville Predators GM Barry Trotz about trading with the Toronto Maple Leafs to acquire Mitch Marner. But would that have made sense for either team?

It will all go one of two ways. Team changes and coaching change actually do make a difference, we have a strong year and play hockey beyond round 2. In this case, marner gets an extension. Or if injuries and the same old flaws persists through the season, this team must must MUST move marner otherwise losing him for nothing (or extending the insanity) makes no sense

    • @jeffreycairns767

They CAN'T just move Marner. He would have to be willing to be traded and from what I've heard, from real sources, he's not willing to do that. If they don't want him, which would be stupid, they'll have to wait until he becomes a UFA. The only ones that want a trade are the clown "fans" that know little time nothing about the game. They should have got rid of Nylander when they had the chance, but watching Marner leave is NOT the answer.

@ericwilliams1845 Say its unexceptable means nothing. We've had better teams in the past yet still haven't even made the finals. The biggest thing to remember is, it's a business and nothing more. Guys like Matthews and Marner aren't paid their salaries because they're some of the best players, they're paid well because they sell. Tickets, jerseys, etc. With the Leafs being the biggest fanbase, they sell ALOT of merchandise because of guys like this. I get that it's not fair to us fans but again, it's a business. If you and everybody you've ever known we're to suddenly stop supporting the team, it would make literally zero difference. They'll always be someone to take your place. That's what the owners count on. It's also not fair what Bettman has done to ruin the league in many ways but it's a business. Nothing more to them

Here was an interesting point brought up here in Tampa. Someone mentioned the possibility of trading for Marner. This was AFTER the Sergachev trade and BEFORE Stammer leaving. When we were asked...would you rather have Guentzel at 9-10 mil/yr or Marner in a trade? It was Guentzel HANDS DOWN. Basically because of what you would have to give up to get Marner. We got Guentzel AND Connor Geekie! Funny how everyone in Tampa is so mad at losing Stammer, we forget what we actually got in return! Besides younger and cap flexibility! JBB is getting ROASTED here (Tampa) because he let Stamkos go. He did a FANTASTIC job at making the Lightning a contender for the FUTURE. Legacy contracts KILL a team's future. Ask Pittsburgh. Man I really hope something ends up happening here with Mitch. The convo Adam had on the pod yesterday about how they'll be able to find goals elsewhere this year... not much chance Auston once again gets 70, no Bert etc I just don't see it, nor do I think it matters.
Because this group with this cap structure does not work in the playoffs. That exact same feeling is going to crawl back in next year in the first round and they just won't have enough in them. No playoffs have shown me just how far away we actually are than 2024
I'm finding it very hard to get excited at all about next year, I just can't believe they're running it back again lmao

The value in trading Marner would be the cap space, drafts picks and prospects. It doesn't have to be players off a teams roster.

@@patrickgoulet8170 , to be honest I'd look for a team that has assets that I'm interested in and the Preds aren't one of them. If the Leafs have to retain salary, then I'd take $2 million off the $10.9 million, which is very reasonable and the rest could be worked out with draft picks and prospects.

@TheMTHSYoshi lol, so...yes...dropped on your head as a child.... mediocre defenceman get traded for more then that, would the Leafs have to eat a bad contract in return to go along with the deal? Probably, I'd expect a bad contract the Leafs can bury and eat the cost along with a first rounder and A+ prospect. It can slide up and down depending on an extension. Could also be roster players... if he walks for nothing then so be it, Leafs free up over 28M in cap space for next free agency

He plays top line minutes, top PP minutes, and until recently, spent years playing top PK minutes. He's far more valuable then many give him credit for and far better then Tavares or Nylander. you sell Marner so short. He might just be the greatest play maker in the modern era. And its telling that one of the best Captain's in the history of the sport in Ryan wants Marner. He knows what you guys keep denying. And its also telling that Ryan never choose to stay in Toronto because he wanted out of that toxic lockerroom lead by the toxic Captain in John Tavares. Ryan could not stand his none work ethic and drifter attitude.
