Really good video Alec!, I'm currently on an older macbook pro 15 inch(2013) and looking to upgrade either the m3 pro or max. Is the 16 inch very heavy because right now i'm looking at a 14inch. also for the color you have spaceblack looks really clean but does it get a lot of smudges and is the safest option to go with the silver or is it not that bad?

    • @alec.js_
      @alec.js_  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Wow! Great job holding out on the m1 and m2 chips. That must have been hard. I had the 14. And for most users. I recommend that form factor . The screen is plenty. And it’s very compact. If youre going max, I would get the 16, because the max is for a heavy performance focus and you want maximum cooling. Nothing wrong with the 14. But if you are in max workload territory, get the max performance, plus the larger battery. Then again, the computational density of the 14 is crazy. You’re getting a very potent machine. The 16 is heavy and cumbersome at times. I think the 14 inch m3 pro is great for the general user who may need performance from time to time. The battery should be better there as well.
There’s something to the space black. It will show fingerprints. They are not intrusive. With my midnight m2 I would “move” fingerprints around instead of clean them, this finish cleans up nicer. If you want as close to 0 fingerprints, go silver. The fingerprints are manageable on the space black. Overall been very happy with the finish. Even have a vid on my channel!

Thank you this was exactly the video I needed to see. Just doing a massive compare between which model mac book pro i should be considering to buy shortly. My use case is mainly productivity, Adobe suite, Figma, Camtasia, POwerBi data sets, MS Office + i need to run Parallels Win 11 (maybe 8/12Gb Ram allocated) for some additional work stuff outside of the Mac OS but at the same time as using the MaCOS. I want the 16" as the ole eyes arent what they used to be and many windows open just that much nicer with more real estate to play with. Jumping through the apple configs was thinking a MBP M3 Pro 16" 36Gb Ram 1TB was looking like a sweet spot for my needs. Do you think this would be suitable Alec? I want to look at future proofing for at least 5 years and avoid as much memory swapping as possible for the best experience. Love to hear your thoughts on what external display (outside of apple) you would suggest. Using a PC Win 11 gaming system now with an RTX 3080 which i will keep for the games aspect until apple / emulators catch up. Thanks so much and oh yeah, this was one of the best videos i had watched and love your explanations and personal opinions on this. Onto watching the rest!

      Thanks!
We have similar set ups. I have an rtx 3080 for gaming as well. I actually run my desk setup with an lg c2 display. Not the most common thing. But it’s a great display. If you need accurate colors, it might not be suitable, I feel like my display isn’t quite neutral. At my creative agency, we run dell ultra sharps I believe.
Sounds like you need memory. 36GB is a lot. Not what it used to be. But still, plenty for many. Only thing I would change about mine is getting 1tb instead of 512gb.
For your usage, I think 36GB/1tb is great! You are near the base config for a max chip, so, if you want the extra performance, it’s there. But the pro chips are great. My recent video kinda helps users with that choice.

They get it all right. Other laptops have a crazy gimmick for marketing. They miss trackpad keyboard and battery. None of those are exciting or marketable. I use my laptop 95% of the time docked. It’s a shame because it has a nice screen and a fantastic keyboard and touchpad, but I enjoy it even more when I use it outside my room.

    Thanks for sharing your experience.
II was going to choose a 14" Pro, but I may lean towards 16" Pro instead. I'd be coming from an old *mid-2012 13" Macbook Pro.*
What I found interesting was the *weight specs comparison* between that old 2012 laptop and the 16" PRO M3. There's _barely any difference in weight at all_ (only of 0.2lbs)! It's amazing how they managed to keep a much larger modern laptop so light when you compare to he much older ones like this.
    WEIGHT SPECS:
    *13” Mid-2012 Macbook Pro - 4.5 lbs (2.06 kg)*
    *16” M3 Pro - 4.7 lbs (2.14 kg);* M3 Max - 4.8 lbs (2.16 kg)
    14” M3 Pro - 3.5 lbs (1.61 kg); M3 Max - 3.6lbs (1.62 kg)
Since I'm already used to the weight of the old machine, I'd be fine with a 16" and I don't mind the size since I'll have more space for my hands/wrists when typing too.

      @alec.js_  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

They spend a ton on consumer research. They know how to build an excellent product pricing hierarchy. It’s why I think it’s important that people focus on themselves and ask what they need out of an experience. Don’t bother yourself with specs. I think spec wars cause confusion, buyers remorse. Which is what makes Apple’s stair step economics so powerful, people don’t want to make the wrong decision, so they just max it out as far as they can. Which anyone with any M chip, should feel no buyers remorse. They are all incredibly competent machines.

Yea I just do general compute stuff for the most part but I want the option for virtual machines and GIS type work simultaneously while I surf the web and listen to music. I went with the 16” pro MacBook Pro with the 18gig ram. I REALLY wanted the 36 but I also REALLY don’t need it, especially for the price haha. I appreciate your honest video, especially the user experience aspect. I made the switch from PC to MacBook in 2015 and haven’t looked back, simply because of that user experience aspect. You really can’t beat it, even though you could probably get a more powerful machine for a decent amount less. In short, thanks for the video man, makes me feel good about my decision haha. I’m sure the upgrade from a 2017 MacBook Pro, not even an M1 chip, to an M3 pro is going to be fantastic and I’m excited!

I am curious if you think an M3 Mac Book Air (upgraded with 16 GB Unified RAM and increased SSD) is sufficient? If not, would the M3 Mac Book Pro (with similar upgrades) be something you'd suggest? And/or if what you'd suggest is an M3 Pro Mac Book Pro (with similar specs). Since I'm not techy enough and am not familiar with the Mac realm, any opinion is appreciated. The lineup I asked about is from lowest to highest price, so that's why I ordered them that way and excluded the M3 Max. Appreciate any thoughts.

Should I buy the m3 macbook pro with a ram upgrade (I would upgrade from 8 to 16g) or should I buy the base model m3 pro macbook pro? I am super conflicted on which one to pick. For reference I am a college student entering my second year of undergrad. I want a laptop that can last me 4-5 years (I plan on applying to law school with this thing and starting law school with this laptop). While I am not a stem major, I will be taking multiple classes where I need to do some work on R studio. During the school year I am on my laptop almost all day, every day. I plan on using my ipad pro as a second monitor for my new laptop. I feel my current laptop is hindering my workflow a lot. I currently have a 2021 Dell XPS 13 and the battery life is crap, they keyboard is shot, the track pad glitches where it will fuck up my essays and notes, and it overheats when I have like 3 tabs open. Basically I am looking for which machine of the two macbook pros will give me the better experience for what I need.

I plan to buy an M3 Pro with 36 GB RAM and 1TB storage, but I am also considering an M3 MAX base model for the slightest chance that Apple will provide gaming ability, and I am not left if I choose the M3 Pro. So let me know your thoughts; it helps.

I am in a stuble to select either the 14 or 16 inch M3 Pro. Because i use to have a 16 inch 2019 5600m, it was just perfect for at home and even traveling as it is very light. Even airplanes while struggling a bit, it was still nice. However this year's 16 inch is a bit heavier, and the 14 inch is just as powerful as the m3 pro. However 512gb as the default and even upgraded m3 pro is crap and you would need an m3 max....14 inch I guess can suffice on anything and when at home on the desk i would use a monitor. Whats your take?

Loving my 14” m3pro pro! No doubt, it’s definitely overkill for my general needs but the excess spec really allows me to stretch out more than the 512/8gig m2 air that I had owned previously. The m2 was great and if I’d had the foresight to upgrade the ram instead of the storage, I’d still be using it. Only really upgraded because I found a killer deal on the pro after Xmas. I manage a small business.. both online and brick&mortar and I have found myself handling increasingly more demanding computing tasks as things progress. So the pro might not be as overkill as it feels for that long!

Not to mention. There are just computing niceties that come with the upgrade. I love having the pro motion display. It’s the one thing that bothers me every time about my MacBook Air m2. But the m2 air is still a great device I use one for my primary job. And it’s always up for the task. Killer battery for its size too. Working on that laptop daily makes me appreciate the m3 pro MacBook Pro though.

Great review, I'm currently looking to replace my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) - Yes 10 years, definitely worth the money! my dilemma is size 14 inch or 16 inch? I've watched many reviews which compare weight and size but given my current model it's quite weighty anyway. I've heard the fan noise is more noticeable on a 14 compared to 16. If anyone can comment on this or what else I should think about when weighing up 14 inch vs 16 inch. Much appreciated, thanks.

Same here. Coming from a 15" 2014 pro I decided to go with the 14" since my current laptop was getting bothersome to carry in a backpack. I made up my mind when I got my hands on my friend's 14 inch. Definitely could notice the difference in screen size but I'll probably get used to it -and I have an external monitor anyways so no big deal.

Remember, For a while a 15 inch laptop was considered very large, so the 14 still provides a great amount of screen, with a lot more portability.
The battery life on the 16 is great. I can sit still and WORK on it a lot longer. Which suits me. If you like being on the go a bit more, I think the 14 is the most versatile form factor. I mostly recommend that one.

If you’re frequently unplugged, plan on playing games on Mac, or frequently do taxing work, get the most performance, which would be m3 pro. If you do need performance, there’s also the m2 pro.

Yeah. You’d be getting quite a performance jump. The ports are part of what makes it “pro”. That added versatility is invaluable for me. As semi pro. My regular usage is mostly Chrome. Hardly pro, but I get tons of value out of the higher refresh screen, battery life and smooth performance. I’ve think the max chips are there for those who access performance daily. The pro chips are commonly used for general compute tasks. Ultimately, it’s if you want that luxury computing experience and a no compromise form factor for the next few years.

Excellent video. I also have an RTX 3080 gaming PC and just picked up the 16" M3 Pro with 18GB RAM. Few thoughts:
    1) Agree that M1 and M2 are sufficient for most people. There is a strong allure/temptation of having the new 3nm technology, even if the M3 Pro isn't that much more powerful than M2 Pro.
    2) M3 Pro is excellent at gaming. I've been using it for Switch emulation and a few other Mac-native games. Very happy with it when I want to do something casual around the house/in bed without having to boot up my gaming PC. I still very much prefer PC gaming b/c of being able to use mods.
    3) It is quite tempting to spend the extra $1000 to upgrade to the M3 Max; performance seems almost 2 fold to the M3 Pro based on some comparisons (like Andrew Tsai's channel showing BG3 running on M3 Max at almost 90 FPS at 1440p on max settings compared to 50 FPS on medium settings on the M3 Pro). Ultimately it is prudent for each person to be mindful of what that extra money could go to. An extra $1000 could fund an RTX 4080 super GPU, or an entire gaming laptop that would beat M3 series. It is tempting to think about future proofing, but I had to recognize that most heavy games were better suited for my 3080 gaming PC (such as Cyberpunk), and rarely would I regret not having the extra GPU power.
    4) 18GB of RAM has been fine for me thus far in my games and web browsing usage. It was tempting to upgrade to 36GB, but for $400 I felt like it was not tenable. I still have to keep an eye on it (like not having other apps open when gaming). Damn Apple and their outrageous pricing for memory.
    5) As happy as I am having an all-in-one super laptop (stellar display, awesome speakers, sound gaming capability, incredible battery life for daily tasks), I do wonder if waiting for an M3 Air (or getting a refurbished M2 Air) PLUS getting a gaming laptop would have been a better fit for me. The M3 Pro 16" is amazing, but it is decently heavy!! I'm on the fence whether I will bring it with me on some upcoming trips, but I can probably manage.
    6) Rarely could one get a laptop that games this well and is so efficient at daily tasks like web browsing (15-20 hr battery is insane); normally a standard gaming laptop would have weak battery even for web browsing.

    • @alec.js_
      @alec.js_  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

With you on all of that. The max was tempting for sure. I felt I would lose some battery going for it. And the gaming performance would be decent on this machine. I care most about the battery life and occasional heavy performance. It’s nice to have a decently portable machine that can truly compete with a desktop, while actually having not decent or good, but great battery life. The ram and storage thing is always a painful when buying a MacBook. Crazy you can almost double the price of a machine when adding ram and storage. Like those two things are as difficult to engineer as an entire MacBook? Us Sullivans think alike!

@@alec.js_ you are definitely right with the reduced battery aspect of the Max vs the Pro. Even though battery would still be stellar with the Max, I like what you highlighted with having a machine with the best battery and shining at occasional heavy performance. when you're working in your so-called 'creative flow' you're at your desk, which i presume there's a charger there. the issue about battery life in country's where power is not a problem is just ridiculous. some countries still experience a lack of power for hours, every few times a week. those are the people who should complain about battery life., not a country where power stability is guaranteed.

The only reason I wouldn't want to buy one of these right now, is because Apple are in the middle of an AI revolution and I have a feeling their line up of MBP's is going to have a dedicated chip for AI. That's me with a wild theory but I think it's mega suspicious that Apple are seemingly way behind when it comes to the AI race and I can only assume it's because they are waiting for the full package.

I use external storage. Because the cost of more storage in a Mac is so expensive. If complete portability is important to you, then getting the 4tb version sounds like the way, if you’re pushing 1 tb.
I assume you were looking at the m3 MacBook. Which, if you’re going for more storage, you might as well just get the m3 pro MacBook Pro w 4tb.
The m3 pro would have better battery life. But at what that costs, you can get an M1 Max with 8tb of storage.
Also, cloud storage is another option. You can almost double the cost of an Apple machine with ram and storage. That can be hard to stomach for me.

I also got the M3 Pro, but with the base configuration, since CPU power is my priority over RAM. I'm a 3D modeler and my softwares use CPU to handle millions of polygons, simulation, and rendering (as rendering with CPU is more accurate than GPU). I feel like getting the M3 Max will be a diminished return for me, as I make the same amount of money working with either the M3 Pro or Max. Yes I get 2 minutes faster render on the Max but I'll be making a cup of coffee when I'm rendering anyway, so it's not a real problem. Performance during work is more important than render speed in my workflow. And this laptop delivers just that.
I'm very happy with the performance of the M3 Pro. And with the added ray-tracing and mesh shading, I'm hoping more and more 3D softwares on MacOS will be optimized to use that power in the future.

Just not for the early adopters. Thanks for watching.

    Alright, here's some math:
Consider that apple will slowdown your macbook after 6 full years. It's not a schizo-conspiracy, it is real :D.
And a battery will be gone in 4 years.
Today you have two options: To buy a 16 M1 pro 1tb for around $1400 at sales, or 16 m3 pro 1tb for ~$3300.
    1) 1400/(4years*12) = $24/month for an amazing M1 pro laptop. 4 years is about battery life here, because M1 pro laptop is already 2 years old if bought new. So you have 4 full speed years (instead of 6) and 4 alive battery years.
    2) 3300/(6years*12) = $49/month for the same 6 full speed years, and 1 on them will be with dead battery in service required mode.
So I think i'll just buy a 16 M1 pro, because I'm tight in budget and for software engineer perspective they are almost the same.

I've been a Windows guy forever (starting with Win 95 anyway). Just ordered a 14" Lenovo Slim 5, but won't have it for up to 1.5 months. I've been on the fence about purchasing a Macbook Pro for almost a year. I have a 10" iPad I use a lot and love, and once had a 1st-gen, 24" iMac for photo editing and music ripping until the drive died in '22. I'm not a "creator" / vlogger / developer or anything of the sort. I enjoy photography and do photo editing and have been using a Legion 5i laptop to rip a massive library of CDs to FLAC using Exact Audio Copy, stream media, do office work and software-dictate papers and emails.
The "issue" I've had with Windows is the almost imminent need to have at least 32gb RAM, a discrete GPU, and a fast SSD, because it seems INEVITABLE that at some point, either MS or third-party software "updates" begin to bog down a Windows PC. It's almost "by design" to obsolete everything that comes out within a year or two by hamstringing the system with glitchy updates and it's driving me nuts.
What I want more than anything - and the primary reason I've been looking at Apple for so long now - is longer-term, "it just works" reliability coupled with flexibility of use. My three primary dilemmas are whether to save $$$ by investing in a refurbished M1P or M2P version, the pros/cons of 14" vs 16" for mostly home-based use and 62-year-old eyes, and software alternatives available to the Mac I'm used to with Windows. The 14" or 16" M3 Pro / 18gb memory / 1tb SSD are really appealing but obviously a next-level price bracket compared to refurb'd M2/M1 or Windows.
All that said...THIS video is arguably the most sensible, most insightful help I've seen online to-date. You're making the same argument ("a tool that just gets out of your way") many photographers do. A camera that allows the shooter to focus on the subject, rather than obsessing over a myriad of camera settings and missing the moment. Your video helps laptop buyer/owners realign with what matters most, which is ironically the opposite of what many of us do - OCD'ing on specs and what-if scenarios. When I considered many of your points about the primary elements of actual laptop use - screen, keyboard, trackpad, ports as the MEANS rather then the END, it takes the mental gymnastics out of the buying process and distills it into something more tangible. So for that - thanks for this video!
