He replaced the bassist, Randy Meisner (also from Poco), one of the founding members of the Eagles/ Linda Ronstadt's backup band, who was the lead vocalist on "Take It To The Limit". He left during the Hotel California tour, when, to to health issues & angst over being separated from his family, he felt unable to perform the very challenging vocals of Take It.., & ended getting into an intense confrontation w/ the late Glenn Frey, who demanded that he perform the piece anyway. I think I may have seen one of (if not, the last) his last performances when I attended their concert at Chicago Stadium in Oct.of '77. By that point, they had taken on Don Felder & Joe Walsh, but had lost another founding member, Bernie Leadon, the banjo-picker, who had given the group their early country sound. Henley's the only original member left w/ the group, although Bernie & Randy haven't "slipped the surly bonds" yet.
You know you're one hell of a band when your drummer, guitarist, or in this case, bass player can take lead vocals and have a hit. Timothy's voice is smoooooth on this track. I agree with you. Not being able to react to their music is a travesty. This is a true gem you've found. Thanks, Jay!
The amazing thing about this song is that the Eagles had just fired their bass player and then hired a new guy, and when he was learning all their songs, they asked him, "What have you got for us?" And he said, I'm the new guy, I'm just the bass player and you guys are the.. Eagles! And they said, Don't worry, we all contribute. So he said, Well, I wrote this song about a man who can't give up on a breakup called I Can't Tell You Why. And they said, dude, that's why we hired you.
Love 'em, hate 'em, heard too much of them, or can't get enough of them...there is no denying the talent in this band. One of the most prolific quintets to ever grace a concert hall, sound studio, or car radio.
This track has Timothy B. Schmidt as the lead. The Eagles have 6 different leads, depending on the album and track. It’s usually Don Henley or Glenn Frey, but there are also some gems from Joe Walsh, Randy Meisner, Bernie Leadon and Schmidt.
No Don Felder? I'm pretty sure he played guitar solo's on a lot of the songs on the album, not to mention most of their rock albums, but definitely this one. No mention?
My late wife and I had just returned home after having spent four years in Hong Kong while I completed my postgrad fellowship, and this Eagles song was playing in the delivery room while our second child was being born. You maybe can imagine how much this song resonates to me, and to my only daughter too.
They're in my top 6 bands, along with The Guess Who, The Doors, The Beatles, The Allman Brothers, and Led Zeppelin. Always those 6, but depending on my mood or frame of mind, they trade places in the top 6. Burton Cummings and Timothy B Schmidt are the two best vocalists ever, followed by Steve Perry and Freddie Mercury.
The members in this video: " Glenn Frey " ~ ( co-founder ) keyboard , vocals and gave the count, " Timothy B. Schmidt " ~ bass and lead vocals; " Don Henley " ~ ( co-found ) drums and vocals; " Don Felder " ~ guitar; " Joe Walsh " ~ keyboard ( to the right side of Glenn, with a moustache ). Excellent band.
I watched your video over and over again, because it turns out you have the same opinion as me about this song. you only need to close your eyes to enjoy this beautiful song and to know that this is a masterpiece. The harmonization on this song is very good and really precise. as I said earlier, you only need to close your eyes to enjoy this song and know that this is a masterpiece.
The eagles could Crank it up and rock with the best... What really made them special was to control it and just let the music express itself. The understatement, the modulation from major to minor chords, it's just beautiful..
Really can’t go wrong with any Eagles song. My favorite is One of These Nights. It also has my favorite Felder guitar solo. The wonderful Bass line in the song was when by Felder too.
I can't believe that was over 40 years ago, it still makes me get chills every time I hear it. It has a beautiful sadness. Its my favorite Eagles song. Thank you
The Eagles started out as Linda Ronstadt’s backup band in the early 70s. She made them famous. You should do lots more Linda Ronstadt reactions, she is amazing. One of the best female vocalist of the 70s along with Karen Carpenter!
I love to see young people enjoying the songs a bunch of us old folks grew up to! Maybe through you, these songs and those who made them won’t be forgotten!
This is the music I grew up on. The Eagles were a great 70's band with so many hit songs. They were known for their great harmonies. "Take It Easy", "Witchy Woman", "Desperado", "Already Gone", "Best of My Love", "Lyin' Eyes", "Take It to the Limit", Hotel California, "New Kid in Town" etc. Before they went solo they were the back up band for Linda Ronstadt.
Singer is bassist Timothy B Schmidt. He replaced Randy Meissner on bass in the late 70s. Beautiful gentle tenor voice. They can all sing. Such a talented group
In my family, when we go on road trips, everyone wants control of the radio, so to keep the piece, we put in an Eagles cd and cruise along, singing the songs.
One hell of a band, they all had talent and all sang. Love this song. Also love Witchy Woman, Lyin’ Eyes, The Best Of My Love, and Tequila Sunrise. Got to see them with my aunt while visiting in California for their Hell Freezes Over tour. Whew, that was a while ago. I was raised on The Eagles. Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, The Beatles, Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton. Always enjoy your reactions,
It's the harmony baby nobody sounds like the eagles their voices Blended beautifully five part harmony absolutely incredible timeless beautiful amazing music
I was 17 or 18 when this came out...One of my ALL TIME favorites!!! Smooth, beautiful and Tommys vocal are so easy to sing along with...This song is a classic!!!
I remember being about 10 years old when this song came out and just playing it over and over again. Honestly I love it as much now as I did 40 years ago💗
Such a beautiful song! Timothy B Schmidt’s gorgeous, silky voice and those amazing Eagles’ harmonies just blend to make that magical sound. I never realized, until now, that Joe Walsh played keyboards! I love learning these new tidbits. Great reaction. Love love love me some Eagles! 🌺✌️
This is one of the most beautiful songs live. I have seen them in concert twice and if you close your eyes and just listen you'd swear that you were listening to the album. They are THAT good. They're just so exact and perfect! I love this band so much. Makes me sad that Glenn Frey died though. Such a great legend forever gone. Also, the guy singing is their bass player. His name is Timothy B. Schmitt. While he is not one of the originals to the band he has been with them for 40 years! Glen Frey has pretty much always been considered the "lead singer" of the band even though many of them had hits from singing too. The whole entire band is exceptionally talented.
I don't like it when people say that they don't make music like they use to because I know of some very talented recent bands....but it's super rare to find this caliber and it was not common back then for sure but also not quite as rare. The industry is not what it once was. It's out there but you have to dig.
I love the Eagles, everyone of the group could sing and yes the harmonies are brilliant sweetheart. I agree that more Eagles songs should be heard especially by the people who produce modern music so they can hear why the music of the past was far better with real singers and musicians. Oops, I get so angry sometimes at how they are selling their listeners down the river. You and many others of the younger generation appreciate what talent is and that is marvellous, they shouldn't be forgotten. God bless you all love hugs and peace Mary-Ellen UK

I love your reactions. They are spot on. It’s so enjoyable to be able to see a reactor recognize, appreciate, and express the magnificence of a song... and you do it! Thank you! My absolute #1 favorite guitar solo of all time. So much feeling. So much emotion. No flash. No playing 1,000 notes in .3milliseconds. Just pure heavenly perfection. *sigh*
I love the eagles ,when I was 20 I sang hotel California with my dad and his friend on guitar it was for my grandparents 70th wedding anniversary .an evening of music in a hired out pub was our gift to them ❤️
One of my favorite Eagles songs. Soooo smooth. This live on their Hell Freezes Over concert was 👌🏼👌🏼🔥🔥 Favorite song of theirs is One Of These Nights. Such a groovy song.
This is in my Top 3 Eagles songs of all time. Sweet honest vocals from Tim Schmidt, simple arrangement, great backing vocals, and a tasty guitar. Heaven.
LOVE , LOVE THIS SONG. SOOOO GOOD. Love this group. always have. That's TIMMY. Not a usual lead singer in the group, BUT EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE GUYS CAN SING. He is the High voice in the group . All combined have some of the best ever HARMONYS , HANDS DOWN.
I;m 73 and use to listen to that song when I was going to college in the 1970s. I would go and play it on the joke box at the college. It was so dreamy and I loved the guitar parts, well the keyboards and everything. I haven't heard it in years. My wife never heard it and came across it and asked me if I ever heard this song. I listen to the opening chords and said yes, that's the Eagles, I' Can't Tell You Why. The beat and feel is so great it just grabs you. Them guys had the feel for sure.
When you have Don Henley, Glen Frey, and Joe Walsh singing background vocals and Don Felder playing behind you the voice better be great and Timothy B Schmidt delivered.
I sang this in Harrah's casino in Reno. I worked there and everyone told me to enter the singing contest. I only came in second,,,,but this song was so easy for me to sing. I now it by heart.
Timothy also performed with Poco as bassist and vocalist. Love this song and his voice. I saw The Eagles in the late 70's, it was one of the best concerts I've ever seen.
Nice to see Millennials apreciating great music.
Timothy B. Schmit on lead vocals. He joined the Eagles in 1977 after the Hotel California tour.
From Poco
He has a new album out this week

Every member of the Eagles is as good a lead singer as other mega groups leading singer.
My favorite Eagles song. Something about it, so sensual, sad, but also hopeful.
Timothy B. Schmidt has the voice of an angel! He is also so handsome!
Amazingly talented man. I love him so much.
The amazing thing about this song is that the Eagles had just fired their bass player and then hired a new guy, and when he was learning all their songs, they asked him, "What have you got for us?"
