The crazy thing is as good of a performance as this was, AND IT WAS, Bobby was sick and still delivered a performance 2nd to none with his Mother in the audience. Thats who he is smiling to at the end, A True Master Singer!!
You are right there mate when you say "you can never get over this perfomance" I have heard this song thousands and thousands of times, it's on my list. I'm 82 in a few days and the "oldies" and sometimes very much the "goodies". I enjoyed the reaction and yes, listen to this and it alaways brings a smile to your face.
I saw them live in 1964, I was about 15 and they were fantastic. My Dad went to Vietnam in 65 and my mother was German and didn't write to well so they sent tapes to each other and Dad sent her this song and she cried so much, she loved it ❤️
@@catbutte4770 sad to say they are both gone now, my dad died at 49 and my mom never got over him, moved in with me and died at 62. They were super close

Loved watching you two react, visually and with your comments. Righteous Brothers were the best in the 60s, but they have continued to enchant generations of listeners right up until today. Some of their music will be forever music!
Smooth as silk. With over 670 artists covering this song, no one does it better than the late great Bobby Hatfield. The gold standard. Just one of there many hit songs. Greatest duo of all time.
What a wonderful song for your wedding song. I was there back in those days too, watching it on TV with Andy Williams Show. Hearing this music on modern equipment, compared to car radios and small black and white TV's. I love Roy Orbison and Jay Black & The Americans to hit those high notes, but this performance is in it's level. A triumph.
thankyou for your timeless reaction this is very lovely. Bobbie Hatfield is an Angel this is the love and talent he has. the very best Unchained Melody.1965 original Live I thankyou for sharing t this with me.
Ahhh...the late Bobby Hatfield. His voice was so awesome! I watch him sing this beautiful song on the Andy Williams show in 1965. No auto tune just pure raw talent. RIP BOBBY! We miss your beautful voice.
He did not even pause of catch a breath, that is what is so amazing about this. You can't fake that with a live audience. And a song written with forethought, and compassion.
Not only is it the greatest live performance but to me the greatest tenor or countertenor. His heart his soul everything was in that song and he created a masterpiece. He owns it and it will live forever
There was no place to hide back then. It was a different era to be sure, the performers dressed in formal suits and dresses created a classy event. Today's performers seem to hardly make an effort and rely on auto-tune and special stage effects instead of talent and practice honing their craft. Some disrespect their fans and walk out or don't bother showing up at all. Song lyrics have to be shocking and nasty to get attention.
swear american idol has programmed people to think everyone has a “voice” and it’s not hours of time spent honing individual characteristics of equalizing their control and ability
No one else can sing this song like Bobby Hatfield. I could listen to him singing this song every day. Unfortunately Bobby left us in November of 2003. A tragic loss of a great talent.
This is a live performance from The Andy Williams Show. There is another TH-cam video of this that shows Andy Williams interviewing both of the Righteous Brothers and they are joking around. Andy requests that they do Unchained Melody and Bobby informs him that he does this one by himself. When Andy Williams asks why, Bill Medley jokingly says, “Because I didn’t think it would be a hit.” When Andy and Bill walk off the stage, Bobby takes the microphone and performs this song. The song is from a B movie Unchained. It was a 1955 prison movie and this song was written for a prisoner that was pinning for his lover as he contemplated trying to escape to see her or doing all of his time. The Righteous Brothers recorded it in 1965 and it was a huge hit. Their recording was a big hit again in 1990 when it was in the Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore movie Ghost. Ghost wasn’t the only movie to feature a Righteous Brothers song. They sang You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling in Top Gun. Bill Medley sang a duet with Jennifer Warnes, I’ve had the Time of My Life in the movie Dirty Dancing.
i have heard/seen Unchained Melody a million times and could hear/see it a million more and I would still get goosebumps, butterflies and feel on the verge of tears every single time. I love the Righteous Brothers :)
Master class in singing right there Holding the notes with only tiny vocal runs that complement the lyrics instead of competing with them or trying to overpower the instrumental. Great balance throughout for a live performance.
I have probably watched this a hundred times and could watch it 100 more. The Righteous Brothers are an all time favorite. I heard them say they were singing in a club and one of the patrons yelled, "that's Righteous brother," thus their name! Love them.
This is widely referred to as the greatest live performance of all time. It was live in 1965 on The Andy Williams Show. No autotuners or other electronics and a very basic sound system for the time. Just pure, raw talent. It is the most requested song for "first dances" at weddings. The term "blue-eyed soul" was coined for them. They got their name while singing at a black nightclub in the south. At the end of the performance, a guy stood up and yelled "that was righteous brothers".
This was live on tv, audience asked to keep quiet, musos in the next room, mum in the audience, young Bobby Hatfield had a head-cold and this is the best version for all time. This was also only about 20 years before auto-tune was even invented, so if you couldn't sing well (and he did great, ) you just had to stay home.
I never cared much for The Righteous Brothers until all you young fokes started reviewing them, and I realized how lovely their vocals were. And how nice-looking he was. Ever listen to Sam Cooke? I love his voice. "You Send Me?" Perfection.
Thanks, guys! this LIVE version is totally the best... he doesn't strain or scream.. just hits those notes purely and clearly.. (I also heard that he was nervous b/c his MOM was in the audience - lol... I'm sure she was proud!) P.S. does he even take a breath? lol
Top 5 best live performances ever recorded in my book. He was very nervous before he got out there, since his mother was in the audience and he really wanted to impress her. Absolutely phenomenal performance!!!
May I suggest listening to the song " You've lost that loving feeling". This song features BOTH singers of the righteous Brothers. They were simply AMAZKNG singers...IMO.
It was re-released in the movie “Ghost”. Which was the third time this made the charts. 😮However, that was a modified recorded version and not nearly as GREAT as this performance. It was still good. But not nearly the caliber of this performance. I can’t think of one live performance that matches this quality except for Queen with Freddy Mercury, who came close.
I was 15 when this song was released in 1965 and has remained my favorite all time song to this day. Never ever get tired of listening to this masterpiece.
Incredible voice period. Just that. Nothing fancy, just pure. My 83 year old Mum has been listening to this song A LOT lately 💜 You can see why this is one if not THE most romantic songs of ALL time 💜💜💜
Well, this is gonna show my age, but I already had several children by the time this came out. It has always been one of my favorite performances. I have listened to it probably 2 or 3 hundred times over the years. To me it is quite romantic and sexy and shows just what a special voice really can do. He sure knew how to deliver THE message !!!!! Thanks for sharing it with your audience, also. I forgot to mention that a slow dance to this song while in your husband's arms it's just one of those things that you never forget. It is quite seductive to say the least!
