    Yeah, Nightwing is awesome.
    He's like Batman but with Superman's personality.
    He's the best of both. That's why he's named Nightwing.

      @maya4009 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Alan Ortiz ''but with Superman's personality'' NOT AT ALL!

    • @TIMMUT17
      @TIMMUT17 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      maya Yeah, they're pretty funny a lot of the times, both have a huge sense of responsability, none of them have an ego, and they hold on to hope, unlike Batman.

    • @maya4009
      @maya4009 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Alan Ortiz Trust me they have very little in common personality wise. Dick Grayson is a happier and friendlier than Bruce Wayne but he doesnt have much i ncommon with Clark Kent, and Nightwing's nothing like Superman. Nightwing uses Batman's methods in dealing with crime, plus unlike Batman he's willing to kill if needed. You should read some Nightwing comics. In regards to Batman: Batman himself is a beacon of hope in a very, very dark place like Gotham. Of course he holds onto hope(by this point i really doubt you have read any of his comics), he fights against metahumans whereas he's just a human being. He's not afraid to change into fight he knows he's gonna lose, so one can say he fights purely on hope. He's not as dark as people make him out to be, he has his own moral code than he doesn't dare to step over. He let the person who killed his parents live. With that said no of those characters are interesting to me. I'm more interested in someone who's willing to do what it has to be done in the name of greater good like Wonder Woman for example

    • @TIMMUT17
      @TIMMUT17 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      maya Well, Batman doesn't have a moral code. He says that a lot. He doesn't kill because he's almost as crazy as his villains. He doesn't kill because he knows that if he does, he won't be able to stop.
      Superman has crossed that line a lot, because he's not as crazy as Batman so he can control himself. He doesn't kill humans, but if Darkseid or Doomsday try to destroy Earth, well, he does what it needs to be done.
      And, regards Nightwing, I haven't read a lot about him, that's true. I was basing my opinion on him from the comics he shows up (Superman comics, Batman comics, Green Arrow and others)
      But I remember something that he said: "Who do I think I am? Good question. I've seen too much to be Robin, but I'm still too optimistic to be Batman. I'm Nightwing. I'm Officer Dick Grayson. I'm Barbara's boyfriend, Bruce Wayne's adopted son, and the last living member of the Amazing Flying Graysons. I'm happy."
      That reminds me a lot of Superman, because he's optimistic too, and he's happy. Superman has been through a lot of things, but he's still optimistic. Bruce Wayne was traumatized as a kid, and he's not very optimistic about it, but he uses that as a weapon for good.
      And, you gotta remember, the reason why he's called Nightwing, it's because of Superman.

    • @evergreenhigh1493
      @evergreenhigh1493 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Alan Ortiz Oh Batman does have a moral code and priorities. Yeah he does what feels right to him but without crossing certain lines. Having his own limits and boundaries is sort of like having his own moral code. That said he has intentionally tried to kill before even post the comics code of conduct and the "no kill rule". In Final Crisis he shoot Darkseid with the intention of killing him. Yeah he doesn't kill because he doesn't want to become ''a monster'' like ''the monster'' who killed his parents but he's also willing to make exceptions. I also wouldn't say it's because he's afraid of himself, it's more of a personal choice. And yeah he's depressed, but i don't think he's as antisocial as some people might think. He has managed to build strong bounds and even some healthy relationships with people around him through the years. And he actually gets laid a lot and has mad game, but he's also very romantic and believes in true love

    Everything you said about Nightwing is 100% correct. You hit the nail on the head. Dick Grayson is Batman without the baggage. He's my second favorite superhero, Superman is number one. Chronicle was great. American Ultra was great. I just picked up the DVD/BluRay, it's sitting in my coat pocket as I write this. I'm enjoying your Superman miniseries. I've always believed that Superman stories are the ones that focus on the man and not the super. Can't wait to see what you do next. Good job, man!

    As a fellow comic nerd, I completely agree. Nightwing is one of my favorite characters. I like the idea of a character who gets to mature from sidekick to hero in his own right, and gets to step out of the shadow of his mentor. I also like that he's essentially the big brother of the DCU. I'm not a big fan that he's now literally working for Big Brothers, but I have enjoyed his role in Batman & Robin Eternal so far.

    my favorite aspect about Nightwing, which you touched on, is the fact that he is the perfect mix of Superman and Batman, you take the coolest aspect of batman, his tragic past, his dark and gritty fighting style, but then you give him the kindness and boyscout nature of superman, that is who nightwing is. which is interesting when you realize that when superman lost his powers in Kandor, he donned the name Nightwing, inspired off of batman.

    I really need to read more Nightwing books. And I have to say, Dick Grayson is my favorite Batman. I just wish they didn't stop the Dick/Damian Batman and Robin book with the New 52. There should've at least been a story explaining why he went back to Nightwing and maybe his struggles with being Batman. And I like your rambles. You're a great writer and do a lot of cool stuff, but I also like how passionate you are about this stuff and just talking about it.

      +Steve Jones Gaming Todd is even better than that. He EMBRACES Batman's methods, but rejects his ideals, while retaining the same goal. He's a black mark on the House of Bat, but in a real way also fundamentally loyal to the cause.

    • @SteveJonesGamingGWO
      @SteveJonesGamingGWO 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** I say he rejects the methods because of two things. 1: in pre-new 52, the lost years mini series it shows that he DOES have some ideals (namely crime needs to be stopped) but is basically retained to be a deadly killer and even (like Bruce) goes to several people who are considered top in their field (at least by Talia and Ra's). & 2: in Post-new 52, RH&tO's where he much like in the pre-new 52 is basically retrained but unlike in the Pre-New 52 he doesn't want to be apart of the whole war on crime he just want to do whatever he feels like using his training and is basically a mercenary.
      I do not like him being the crazy basically Anti-Dick Grayson like Battle of the cowl and Batman & Robin made him post-battle of the cowl when Grayson was Batman. I like the more dogmatic and pragmatic nature of Todd being someone who took the basic ideal of Bruce's war on crime to something closer to what Bob Kane envisioned for Bruce.(Gun Wielding science hero instead of no gun using crime fighting detective)

    Good stuff. In the best of all possible worlds, Reynard (the rogue False-Facer from the first Dixon Bludhaven run) would've been kept in play throughout. The parallel of two young strivers making a name for themselves in a city that doesn't play by the rules with which they're familiar would've been fantastic, and it would've created a bond between the two that we really don't get to see too often in superhero comics.

    Good morning Max, Have you ever read Travis Langley's - Batman and Psychology? That author would tell you that Batman is not crazy "for the world in which he lives". He's a moral individual who fights to maintain peace in a world of flying demi-gods, elaborately dressed psychopaths, and cosmic threats. He's not mentally ill within the context his title (according to Langley's work). The book's a really deep dive, I think you'd enjoy it! Thanks Max. P.S. I'm with you on Supes. Optimistic power fantasy - easy to love. Take care.

    • @cjcard214
      @cjcard214 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Connor Cardinale Okay I've come back to this and now I get why I like it. It's the same reason why you give characters props or things to just dick around with because it 1: Contextualizes how their mind works and how they go about doing things (haphazardly spilling the water to cut the gin? bourbon? whatever it was in Death and Return to show how exasperated you were and to prepare for the line of "Superman's not dead?") 2: Makes them seem human because, hey, I'm a human and I eat eggs too. and 3: Gives you a sense that they have life and interests beyond the current scene. Your whole internet persona is based on the fact that you're just an over-expressive guy who likes to do cool stuff. Even when you're just promoting something, just doing something as simple as sharing a link, you have to be Max Landis about it because there is no off switch on your personality. Because you make the choice to show us that you're eating eggs it's just a way to further express Max Landis. You like ketchup on your eggs. That's a tiny detail but it makes your character more rich. You're such an honest and clear person that you make the choice when you're shooting and editing stuff to include scenes of you just doing normal people stuff rather than cutting it out. That choice is what makes Max Landis Max Landis.
      that or i'm just reading in to a bunch of coincidences because it's 5am and i'm watching youtube plsdon'tthinki'mweird

    As a side note coming from the first half of the video, and from what I've observed of the characters and villains associated with Batman, not only do things like bats, clowns like the joker, and the riddler hold a loose tie through the obsession and mental illness, but to pin it down more closely, they seem to be associated with obsession from fear. Fear of bats, fear of clowns, fear of the unknown (as observed from the lens of Bruce), a lot of the motifs and ideas that are touched on through the story of Batman are rooted in fear.
    Bare in mind of course, I'm not completely up on my Batman/DC comics lore, as I haven't quite gotten into either yet, but from my second-hand exposure to these stories, I've been able to make this small connection.
    And sorry of course if I'm rambling, just thought I'd get these ideas out.

    Hey Max, thank you for that rumble. As you said, Nightwing is a very interesting character with a great narrative potenital.
    If I may, for now I'm more interested in Green Lantern.
    I know, for now Green Lantern is boring because his stories are all about the fate of the Universe, cosmic entities, etc. So for now, we can't even understand the scale of his problems.
    And I think it's lame.
    To me, Green Lantern has a potential for Sci-Fi stories, about alien civilisations and their development: you can have inspiration in Mass Effect, I guess.
    Plus, you can see Guardians as gods guiding the galaxy to peace and order, so they have to make hard choices.
    How would a Lantern react to an order he doesn't understand ?
    What if the people involved are people he met and love ?
    So, here it is.
    Thank you for these ideas and your inspiration.

    I commented on Wrestling isn’t Wrestling last night but honestly, Max. You’re too fucking smart. Like crazy fucking smart. I honestly believe if you had been the one designing the DCEU it could be a lot better than what we got. Also I’d like to add I like the way you talk to the audience like a singular person. It really makes me feel like you’re just talking to me. Anyway as I said last night hope you’re doing well.

    I was telling a friend that is a huge Batman fan that if Marvel ever had an event where someone woke up and it turned out their entire world (all of Marvel) was a dream that character would be Peter Parker, anyone else would be a cheat, it would feel wrong. He is the central character. In Star Wars, even if Han is your favorite character, Luke is the central, main guy, he's who would wake up from the dream of the Star Wars universe. In DC it's a little harder to pinpoint. So I asked my friend who would wake up from the dream? He said Bruce, and that's an option, I'm not saying it's not. But to me, if it were Bruce, he would wake up in an insane asylum in a straight jacket. I really think the only good answers are Clark Kent and Dick Grayson. Clark could wake up on a farm in Kansas, at the end of some huge DC event, and it would be a pretty satisfying ending. But Dick might be a better pick, in part because of his close relation to this driven force of nature, Batman, combined with his awe for Superman and all the fantastical things that happen around him. For example, Bruce hears someone say that they are a Martian and goes ok, or somehow has already deduced this bit of knowledge. But Dick hears this and is the guy who says, "Wait, what, you're going to need to explain this for me!" It seems that Dick is very much our best window into this crazy, strange, fantastical universe. Anyway, that's just my two cents.

    Yaaaay I too like Nightwing... Which I weird because I am not a big Batman fan. Now that Bats is all grumpy, Nightwing is like a throwback to the Neal Adams era when Bats was more mentally balanced. And that's cool.

    My personal favourite is Damian Wayne, because Grant Morrison is a genius, and then Dick is a close second. The Batman & Robin arc with Dick and Damian was fantastic and I loved seeing Damian grow as a character under Dicks tutelage. I personally think Bruce is a less interesting character than the rest of his supporting cast and is now only made interesting by the multiverse variations of the character.

    Also, I remember a couple years ago you were wavering between doing Wrestling isn't Wrestling, and a Spider-Man video, done in the same format. Obviously you went with the former (which was awesome), but is the latter still on the table? Would love to see something like that.

    Fucking spot-on commentary. You express a lot of the same views that a lot of comic book fans have with regards to Dick Grayson. Nightwing is a sadly under-utilized character because sure, he's very prevalent in comics, but there just isn't enough done with him outside of that medium.

    My take is that I feel like Nightwing is full of narrative potential because he is Batman who is allowed to enjoy himself. Batman SHOULD be living everyone's dream life. He's rich. He's good looking. He's accomplished. He's smart. He's healthy. He's adventurous. Women want to be with him. He has NO faults, except that he is mentally ill and thusly cannot enjoy ANY of it. That's the grand tragedy of the character. So, because he's mentally ill, when he sees Dick's parents get murdered, he says "AH! I know how to deal with this! I figured out how to get past this, and now I have to show this kid! You just dress up like a monster and beat people up to eternally punish yourself! That's the fix!" But Batman doesn't realize that it's not really a fix at all, and just because it "worked" for him doesn't mean it will work for Dick. So Dick got to grow up with Alfred and the Titans and he grew to LOVE the life of the superhero. He enjoys it the way the audience wishes they could. That's the conflict between Batman and Robin/Nightwing. Bruce and Dick like each other and know each other line nobody else, but Bruce can't understand why Dick doesn't take "the mission" more seriously and Dick doesn't understand why Bruce can't every actually move on from his parent's death.

    The thing with Dick Grayson and what makes him my favorite Batman character(besides Batman) is that he's more relatable than any other character ever created. It's like the a comic book version of "The Truman show". We saw him since he was a kid in the flying Graysons. Going thru the tragedy of losing a family and being fostered by Bruce. Slowly becoming the sidekick then his own superhero then becoming the new Batman. Which is equivalent to a professional athlete or musician getting inducted into the hall of fame. Dick has been the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. And we stayed with him cause we want him to get Barbara and we want him to be settled in but at the same time for our own selfish reasons we want him in peril cause we want him to continue to kick ass. The reader can replace Dick Grayson with his own name and live thru these great stories. Unlike Batman where a 12 year old can aspire to be Batman when he grows up but once he reaches adulthood he'd lose interest. Anyone can aspire to be Dick Grayson cause he's ageless. Lived thru every era with different age groups. Unlike some like Jason Todd, Tim Drake or Damien Wayne. Who just feel retreads of Dick Grayson stories. Dick can get away with being whiny cause he's the original. But when someone else does it. It's like "what gives you the right?".
    That being said. I wish there's a Nightwing series done on either Netflix or FX. We need that story retold on live action media.

    Not sure if anyone's mentioned this already, but his appearance in Geoff Johns' run on Teen Titans when he basically swoops in out of nowhere and breaks up a stupid argument turned superbrawl between the Justice League and the Titans is great. And it works because we immediately key in on the fact that he's exactly the right person to do it, because he's fucking Nightwing; he's walked in both worlds - the League and the Titans, hero and sidekick - and everyone on both sides of the argument knows, loves and respects him as a friend/colleague/whatever.

    Might sound odd but I would love to hear your thoughts on the Marvel character Cyclops. He was seen for decades as a bland cookie cutter hero. Superman mentality but with a far more narrow range of abilities, and has also been in a team for entire superhero "career", having to deal with unstable assholes like Wolverine gunning for his girl, her eventual death, living up to the legacy of the mutant equivalent of MLK/Gandhi in Professor Xavier, and much much more. I've never really like the character until very recently (similarly to Superman) when I was mature enough to approach characters from a different angle.

    I think a very interesting character with a lot of story potential in any and every genre is Wolverine.
    Action, adventure, sci-fi, mystery, noir, thriller, horror, comedy, romance the guy flows easily into all of them.
    Unfortunately a lot of writers tend to stick within a particular narrative, the cliche beer drinking trash talking "berserker" who either gets his ass handed to him to so the writers can remind you he has a healing factor...(though he I supposed to be a highly skilled fighter so maybe he likes the punishment)...or as stated before as a highly skilled fighter who is an unmatched master ninja/samurai.
    He is my favorite character who I feel gets short changes by writers who lack the imagination to truly utilize his potential.
