    I would like to see you bring home the sickest, saddest betta in the dirtiest cup you can find locally, and then take us on a healing journey.
    Or, on the opposite end of that spectrum, you could buy one from your friend Cory at Aquarium Co-op because we all know he takes impeccable care of his fish. It could be a whole video about picking one out from his store and showing us how he, as a business, takes care of the bettas.
    As for color, they're all gorgeous, how could we pick? I guess just not red like Jeff.

      Rebekah Jones I actually did that, my betta wasn't the classiest but he was laying on the bottom of the tiny container in a pile of something, was immediately sold

      Skye Gibbs, yay you! Lucky fish. I got one that way, too, except I was able to convince the store to give him to me for free (I didn't want to reward them for bad behavior by paying for a sick betta).

    My tip for choosing a Betta is to just go to the store and look at them all until one grabs you. That’s how I chose my Flash!! He may not be the “perfect” or “prettiest” Betta but he has a load of spunk and is always interacting with me and my Cat. Also, I would recommend keeping a lid on the tank.

      The metallic scale Bettas usually get tumors later in life if they are over bred. But most of the time you are fine, it’s not a common occurrence tbh

    Of all the Betta types widely available, the veiltail is the most-overlooked (because they're so common). But they are great fish. Save a veiltail.

      They are common. But they are great fish. My first Betta was one and I had him for 2 years. He would come to the glass and swim in circles until I fed him. I unfortunately was little and didn't know what I was doing.

    A fish that is light and iridescent will pop with the dark background without overtaking the plants. You could also go with a dark fish with bright patches. I think a 5 gal is fine, but it also depends on the fish and setup. I've had shy bettas that seem to want less room and some that need more space to explore.

  • @autumnnix
    @autumnnix 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Crowntails have quickly become my favorite in the hobby due to how majestic they look swimming (especially under good lighting). I personally have a 5 gallon minimum for my bettas so you are doing just fine in my eyes. Beautiful tank!

    The top piece is awesome and on the bright side it looks like the light wouldn’t be too difficult to take out and leave the glass on there maybe cut the glass a bit and use a finnex in my opinion. 5 gallons is plenty for betta fish

    You should get a marble betta, they are super fun and change colors through out their lives. Also in my opinion if the betta has a good temperament, which most do, they are really fun to keep with small schooling fish like nano tetras or rasboras.

      tabbypets I have 3 bettas in 3 gallon tanks. Reason being, I dont have room for my 29 gallon and 3 10 gallon tanks. Plus 3 kids that are young. I feel like they are happy, they arent in a cup and they have plants, a place to hide,food and room to swim. More than a cup like before. I'm sure I'll have people say its wrong they are in a 3 gallon.

    Hey Mike, I also recently set up a planted 6 gallon tank but was frustrated finding a small but reliable heater. The reviews I saw for almost all name brand mini heaters were spotty or not great. I hope that heater works well, but if you are looking for a better one I chose the Freesea FS-28. It's currently $20 on Amazon but is small and has a digital display temperature setting. I've only had it for 3 months now but it has been working well and has good reviews. Only downside is the temperate display is always on. Hope this helps!

    If you have good filtration going and the betta is the lone fish, I've always considered 5 gallons to be the minimum.

      varanidguy Is a 3.5 tank good enough for 1 Betta ?

    • @varanidguy
      @varanidguy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Keara, I'd say you might be able to get away with that if you do your water changes religiously, but a 5 gallon isn't much larger and they're very inexpensive. Heck, during $1 per gallon sales that Petco/Petsmart gets, you could pick up an optimal tank for a betta for really cheap. I will tell you this, the healthiest betta I've ever owned was in a 29 gallon community tank. ;-)

    When I was looking for a betta I wanted a black copper. They are so gorgeous! Their iridescence often makes them look multi colored. As for tail type I personally like longer tails. It makes them look like they're dancing.

    It's a good idea to get a lid. Bettas are jumpers. When I was a kid I had two bettas and they jumped out and died. Found them shriveled up on the floor. They were in separate tanks.

    I had a plakat dumbo ear betta in a 5.5 gallon that did great with undergravel filtration. However, he fought his reflection all the time and would bump into the gravel and wore down his dumbo fins. So I put him in a cylindrical 2.2 gallon with an undergravel filter and he did great. A tank that small is a pain to keep clean, but it worked for him. He didn’t see his reflection and his fins grew back. Long way to say: this tank will be great for your betta.

    Super excited to see you get a betta fish! Personally, I love long finned bettas! Crown tails seem to be the hardiest of the long finned, but I think double tails look very unique. PLLEASEE Mike, look for one with cellophane on its tail fin or patches of color. Those fish often have a marble gene causing them to change color. I think it would be such a cool experience for your subscribers to see! (me. I mean me lmao)

    I've had Bettas for years, what I like to do personally is get the one with the most personality. I do this because "Beauty don't mean nothing if he doesn't have Spunk"
    I also tend to lean to he ones that look like they need help the most, like my current one: Misha. A Half Moon betta that's a very nice red, blue, hints of purple...and a permanently mad face. Because of their natural pout, he I guess, was born with slightly more "eyelids" then the average betta, so he looks just upset all day.
    But when I found him, I saw this fitly cup and this little mad face looking at me from the bottom shelf. He's recovered a lot since then but if your not looking for anything specific, it'll surprise you how much theses betta's in bad shape can become so beautiful and just make you smile!
    But if not then get a Koi Betta...they're neat

  • @margaretwood479

    He'll love his new home😊. If you want him to be active I'd recommend you don't buy a double tail as their fins become too heavy. I wish breeders would stop breeding them. Dumbos have trouble breeding in case you wanted to go that way. If I had my time to do over I'd go for a Plakat or half moon. There are so many beautiful varieties to choose from. Have fun deciding.

  • @MapIePancakes
    @MapIePancakes 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    There really are a large number of bettas and fin types, it really depends on your preference of color and fins, their are some issues that larger fined fish can have such as tail biting and difficulty with currents. Smaller finned like Plakat's do much better with water movement but lack the impressive fins that come from the other tail types. A good in between in my opinion are Elephant Eared Plakats, they don't have the large tail fin making it easier to swim but their fluffy pectoral fins give the same effect of size that the otherwise large tails would.

  • @mackenzieferguson4599
    @mackenzieferguson4599 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    As far as colors, a yellow/red/orange/white would really pop against the background. You could go for a marble as well, they do change color throughout their lives, which could be fun. Dragon might be fun too, just watch for the iridescence extending over their eyes. Plakats (shortfin) tend to be more energetic and active, but a nice crowntail might echo the narrow leaf Java fern a bit too. I might steer clear of the true giant Betta though, they can get 3-4" long, which might be a bit big for the 6 gallon. There are some fantastic USA based Betta breeders, it would be awesome if you were able to support one of them!

    I made a 10G blackwater community tank for Richard (my blue/gold halfmoon), some Kubotai and when I can find them, a pair of honey gouramis. Lots of plants, great small hiding for the kubotai if the betta gets too aggressive...
    Except that the kubotai are always out and about and it's Dick who's always buried in plants...

    10 gallons (40 liters) is the minimum tank size you are allowed to keep fish in my country. You can keep snails and shrimps in smaller tanks but not fish. I also vote for some nice plakat. Crowntail females are pretty, too.

    i would sugest either a crown tail or a plakat.
    Plakats are short finned and high energy and are adorable but if you want attitude then i would go with a crown tail
    crowns have striking fins and are a lot of fun to watch, they also seem to have very little trouble with their large fins from my own experience which is AMAZING!
    there are pros and cons to each type but crowns and plakats seem to have the least cons from my own experience.
    good luck!! cant wait to see what you get

    Hey Mike, good to hear you're getting a betta! I follow Frank's Bettas on Instagram and am thinking about buying one from him. He breeds wild bettas and ships internationally, his fish look really healthy and strong and he spends time reintroducing captive-bred bettas to their natural habitats as well which is pretty cool. I'm in no way affiliated with him, just thought I'd give him a shout-out for when you look to stock this tank!

    A black orchid crowntail and a pair of Mexican dwarf craws would be cool. In my opinion fish like halfmoons and dumbo are much lazier and do better in tanks of around 5 gallons, whereas plakats generally could utilize the larger space. So a longerfin variety would be absolutely fantastic and even a plakat or females would be just fine

    Also very important thing that you missed in your set up: open space tends to stress betta fish out, they need hiding places and often caves that they can safely get in and out of otherwise they may end up trying to edge themselves places they shouldnt or bite their own tail out of stress.

    you should get a koi betta! theyre pretty cool. ive never had one myself but i would love to. id steer clear of dragonscales because they are very prone to blindness (from their scales growing over their eyes. i have a blind one myself) and tumors (the thicker "dragon" scales grow on top of each other and multiply to form growths). rosetails also tend to have issues due to their fins being so heavy, and doubletails tend to have shorter bodies, which leads to swimming issues and stunted growth.

    I really like the Plakat variety of Beta Fish. They have smaller overall fins, but that doesn't bother me. I've seen some Plakats that have an almost metallic shimmer to their scales which I think is just beautiful. I'm not sure if other varieties have metallic colors, but it's possible. Also instead of just having one Beta fish, I prefer having a Beta sorority, which is a group (usually +4) of female Betas. Of course you need a fairly large tank with lots of hiding spots to house these Betas because they will establish territories as well as a "pecking" order of command. You can do more research on this, but I think it would be amazing for you to attempt a Beta sorority for your first Beta tank. It is quite challenging, but is also quite rewarding as well. Now I don't think the tank you have in place now could support a sorority, but it definitely is something to consider for the future.

    I'd like to see a plakat purely as I think they are not shown enough. People always go for a more tailed type. They don't lack character and tend to be more active. Also the colours can be as varied.

    If you are looking for a snazzy betta fish you should check out bettas and art. They have some beautiful fish but they are quite expensive. If you wanna do a rescue though and get one from a big box store I respect that as well

    I'd get a female or short finned betta. It's a lot less stress for fin biting issues. They would do better with higher flow. Plus, they're beautiful.

    Hi Mike. It's great ur getting a Betta. Mine is a koi type I think. He has short fins and is a pretty speedy swimmer. I have had him a month and he's really interactive. Thumbs up from me

    I would suggest a 5 gallon minimum, but 5gallons does require a lot more maintainance.

    My favorite bettas that I have named and remembered have always been vailtails with mostly one color, nothing fancy but still beautiful and great personality.

      They're significantly healthier fish in general, too. I especially like the the mahachai betta--very shiny, gorgeous. But imbellis betta are lovely too! Though both might need more room than a long-finned betta because they have a higher activity level.
      If not a wild betta, the healthiest bettas are veiltails and plakats! The rest have various genetic issues because of how they were bred, unfortunately :( But I quite like the look of veiltails and especially plakats--all the benefits of the betta without any of the horrific genetic issues.

    My suggestion would be a plakat of some sort. I've had a lot of bettas in the past and the bigger the tail and fins, the more problems I have. Mostly tears from filter flow (even low flow) and trouble swimming when their tails get too big and heavy.

    Beware of rose/feathertails and extreme halfmoons. They have a hard time swimming and their rays can even break. I really wouldn't recommend dumbo/elephant ear bettas either, their pectoral fins slowly get all torn up over time as they swim, both of mine's are all ripped up and it can't feel good :( The healthiest is probably a plakat, or a veiltail or crowntail would be cool. Maybe rescue one from a cup (there's always at least one that's ugly or sick, but they perk up very quickly!) from someone on Craigslist?

    I’d say don’t worry about the type or color, and just go to some fish stores and eventually you’ll see one that you just “connect” with and get that one

    I always hear that you should have a lid so your betta doesn't jump out. Personally, I have 7 bettas and don't have lids on any of my tanks so there is that. But I have heard people say that they lost their bettas from jumping

  • @michellelawhorn6220

    Plakats have an easier time swimming, but I really do love my butterfly bettas (I've got a white one with black highlights, and a silver one with red).
