I really want CBCS to rise to a meaningful level of competition and there are some viable excellent changes with the new labels but overcoming the existing bias towards CGC is going to be tough.

the old labels definitely gave a "i printed this at home" vibe. new ones are definitely an improvement tbh.

Matching up the design with CGC was a smart move. A lot of collectors want their labels to look the same.

Personally, I submit to both CGC and CBCS. I do believe that CBCS grade more strictly, but then again you are right, the grading standards of both companies were established by the same person, Steve Borock. I had not thought of it before watching this video, but after hearing what you said I agree that the biggest upside to this label change is that the slabs from both companies will be able to be displayed together more harmoniously

Nice, clean design, better emphasis on the grading number, seems to allow enough breathing room around the copy in the label so it is easy to read. CBCS is moving in the right direction with this new look.

It's good to have competition. I like CBCS and their new labels, and I hope they obtain a larger market share and hope the community treats their sale value the same as CGC.

I like the CBCS cases more just because for some reason those newton rings really bother me. And the new labels look pretty good. I just wanted the grade to stand out more, so they accomplished that.

I have no problem with CBCS at all! The ability to have signed books authenticated is an essential part of the hobby. IMO it's a short fall of CGC to not offer that service. I still have a CGC paid account, but there will be a day that I end up with a VERY large CBCS submission. Solely because CBCS is willing to do the basic work of verifying signatures.

We need the competition - it keeps the companies from getting lazy. I've always preferred the quality of CBCS slabs, but I'll have to send in a few books to see the new labels. That being said, CGC is still the better investment if you're looking to sell.

  • @76063co2

    Nice breakdown.
I know the CBCS folks well enough and heard the details about the new label a month ago, and was told that the Marvel Comics #1 was going to be the first comic to receive it. Glad to see that they launched.
I never understood the knit-picking over the label. I didn't hear much of that complaint until CBCS had improved their slab which is undoubtedly superior to CGC. CBCS grading was always more consistent than CGC, and I think it was just "copium" from OCD collectors that were desperately still looking for something to complain about. I would ask people what they meant by it, and the best response I could get was there wasn't a white background on the grade, which seemed silly.
But I get why CBCS updated it. If the market speaks, and people can't handle it not looking more like their CGC books, they had to respond.

Kudos to them for finally listening to their customers and critics. I still say buy the book and not the label. And I will add that if you are at a convention and talking to a dealer with two identical books with the same grade, but in different slabs, see if they will give you the CBCS slab at a discount. I seriously doubt it.

I really like the look of the new CBCS label and I think their cases are more durable with clearer plastic. The big reason I don’t use CBCS is knowing that if I decide to one day sell that graded book, a CGC slab will sell faster and usually for more money.

I'm probably in the minority, but I never had a problem with CBCS' previous labels. So this change is not going to affect to which company I submit my books. With that being said, it's nice to see a company actually listen to their customers and try to make their customers happy.

I think the new CBCS labels are a definite improvement over the old labels. I like how CBCS doesn’t use the dreaded green or purple labels which really detract from the presentation of restored or qualified books. It’ll be hard for CBCS to overcome the price difference between their graded books and CGC’s graded books, but the new labels are a step in the right direction. The Batman #1 CBCS 4.5 looks much better than the Batman #1 CGC 4.0.

Batman 200 is cool and not only "a" Neal Adams cover, his first Batman cover, if I am not mistaken. As for the labels, I think they are more visually dynamic and a definite improvement. I think people are hung up on the font but many will get used to it.

I only wish theyd done this two months ago... finally sent 50 PC books off to CGC. I MUCH prefer the CBCS cases and now with the new labels it would have been a no brainer for me.
Maybe CBCS would run another promotion where they convert your slab from CGC to CBCS at a discount (regrading in the process) theyd get more movement.

  • @leeniren3706

There are many different TH-cam channels, talking about the new labels but you are the first to do such a great detailed comparison. I have only purchased CGC books lately. When I first started with slabbed books and did not know better, I did do an order with PGX and so regret doing so. Because of that, I have decided to stay with CGC even though I do like the look of the new C BCs books. if I were to purchase a book graded by CBCS I would make sure it were the new label. I am one who also did not like how dark the other one was. What I am waiting for is for some company to standardize UVC protectant slabs that will be an industry game changer.

I never gave CBCS a second thought before because of the bland labels. I do like the new, more attractive labels a lot. I think I love them, so why don't I marry them!?
What I dislike the most about the current CGC labels are the banners at the top that read 'CGC Universal Grade'. It reminds me of the distracting banners at the top of older comics advertising Toys R Us giveaways and 'Marvel Comics Group'. CBCS got it right by not printing a banner at the top that distracts from the book title. Now I hear CBCS slabs are sturdier. Seriously considering submitting to CBCS. Thanks for the informative video!

Hey Ryan, you do know I saw a video on TH-cam recently where somebody cracked PGX and sent the books to CGC and they got higher grades .WOW . There might not be any difference in the grading companies. . 9.8 CBCS edge of spider verse. 2 just sold for about $1300. That’s the same price as CGC would get..

  • @shaunavery9048

I would've never bought a CBCS graded book or paid for the service due to the old labels being so incredibly ugly. I mean, just looking at them gives you an uneasy feeling of "Should I trust these guys? This label looks like it was designed using Word 97!" I'm down with the new ones. Can you do custom labels? Like if I want to have one a matching character with that artists rendition of said character?? One final thought, or comment rather, I do really like the fact they can verify the signature without having to be there in-person and grab a witness. Then have both CGC and the creator charge you!! Hopefully CGC will now have some competition 🤞

I think everyone should always collect what you like because you’re paying for it.
That being said I guess theres something to be said for CBCS books being less expensive - saving money is always great! If you are a collector then less is always more for the love of the art.
Now, if you want to invest/spec and think a book in CBCS grade matches what CGC would grade at, then you always have the option of cracking the book open, giving it a little clean & press and submitting to CGC.
Its possible you’ll find yourself with the same or higher grade in CGC at a price that was less and maybe even a little extra equity depending on the book.👍

    ❤the new CBCS slabs!
I wanted to upgrade my Marvel Spotlight #4 as I owed a 5.5 only - cgc universal grade. When I recently found a new case cbcs at an 8.5 grade I had to have it.
So I place both side by side to compare comics and so pleased I upgraded … but I was also surprised when viewing the two labels side by side and found the new cbcs label far superior
    😮to the new cgc:
Mostly because cgc banner highlights CGC whereas CBCS banner highlights the COMIC !
    ❤the new CBCS slab,

I’m looking forward to submitting a comic book to CBCS, these new Labels look solid! I’m game, to check em’ out, up close and personal.
I’m 30 years into collecting / buying / selling comics, but a recent convert to graded comics. Most of my collection will be Graded. I’ll keep a few raws around, but most will def be Graded.
Also, both cases holding that GA Batman look good, but I’m partial towards the CBCS label, by a 10th of an inch.

The only reason to used CGC is that their books fetch a higher price. The CGC Marvel labels can be a hit or miss depending on your taste. As for me the only custom label that actually enhances a book is the one they designed for Invincible. The Thor is pretty cool, but the rest are pretty distracting. Strangely the CBCS cases are somewhat superior but most collectors don’t seem to care.

I love competition. Competition is great for the consumer in terms of quality and price. I hope CBCS gains market share with these improvements. I personally feel the new labels are an improvement and I would definitely buy CBCS slabs. However, if I were to sell, I want to make the most money from the sale. Since CGC tends to sell higher, I would grade with CGC when selling especially higher value books.

  • @JC-dg6vo

I love collecting. In the beginning CBCS was the first to recognize the Newsstands, Canadian and other price variants. So some of the books I have are CBCS for price variants, especially 35 cents. To cross them because CGC was late to the game is bonkers and a waste of money, If the $10 per book on CBCS website is true starting the 23rd (limited time), I will update the labels, especially on major keys. I agree, CGC gave birth to CBCS. It is idiotic to take sides. CBCS should not be redheaded stepchild. CGC's 9.9 and 10 look like crape. The 9.9 I have looks like an afterthought. What's with the faded gray?! Put me down for the giveaway!

I’m obviously no expert, but I’ve noticed that a lot of people confuse fair grading with not getting the grade they want, even after reading the notes.
I’m a CBCS guy purely due to my LCS being willing to submit my books at cons with their own. I haven’t had a problem with the previous label since I was after the grade.
That said, I do think the new label is nicer and I do think it looks more professional than CGC. The sticker look never appealed to me if I’m being honest.
I can’t fault a company for listening to feedback and trying to give customers what they want. That’s just good business.

Ultimately, I think it all comes down to the price

Are the grades comparable? That should be the first concern. Also, the first company that uses two-person teams to grade books should jump to the front of the industry. A bad start to a bad day could mean that every book graded by that person includes a bias in that possibly lowered grade. Everybody knows this. The two-person team would end this and I believe the two-man teams could grade a book faster than a single person. If a single grader sees a borderline flaw, he might want to ponder over that flaw excessively. The two-man team would reach an agreement and a conclusion much faster because of the peer influence. Grading comes down to a yes or no choice. These choices should be as close to automatic (free plug) as possible. Two people clamp down on decision time... I think it is worth a shot. Right now, it's not like CBCS has a whole lot to lose. They need an uptick in their credibility and quick. Over time, two people working together will even out the grading as one grader influences another. These teams would be made up of different people every week? Maybe change them every day. Whatever works best.

I like them more, but most of the print still kind of fades into the background for me. The grade is more visible though.

I actually liked the CBCS labels before this latest change. Luckily, I had the few CBCS books that I own reholdered into these labels before this latest change. The newer label would have looked much better without the arrow look--just have the separation between the blue part of the label and the grade be a vertical division. I'm not a fan of the different colors for the 9.9 and 10.0 (although, the chances I'd ever have a book in that grade are pretty slim). It really cheapens the look of the label to have these different colors--it is reminiscent of the EGS labels. And that's not a compliment.

CBCS playing catch-up on labels. I'll never understand why it takes so long to evolve and grow. Stuck with inventory they need to burn through first? I doubt I'll ever switch.

I only use CBCS because they are with Beckett…. Every time I’ve sent comics to to be graded, I’ve got it back within 30 days (which includes the pressing)
I never use CGC so I can’t compare, but with me personally if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it 🤷🏻‍♂️

I actually prefer CBCS I think their QC is lightyears beyond CGC with graders notes and making sure the slabs are correct prior to shipping...the market, however, does not like CBCS...and it's a shame....I do think the recent price increase with CBCS did not help their cause in some categories as they are more than CGC, which is a No-No. I will wait for those discount codes so I can send some lesser-value books to CBCS to have them protected...

How are they more expensive? I paid $22 for my books to be graded this week

If someone had money to burn it would be a cool experiment to submit the same book to CGC and CBCS and compare.

As someone who is new to the realm of comics and the culture. Will cbcs be around for the long haul? I ask because I am familiar with trading card grading and of course the boom of 2021, when everyone had their own grading company. Hence my question.

CBCS needs to make the new label $5. CGC has thier custom printed for $5 on thier signature series along with the blue labels.

I dont think it's going change anything. At first everyone going try it just because it's new. It's not going change nothing in the long run. Thanks love the Channel !

Not really sure if I like the new CBCS labels. I have to get used to seeing them a little more.
