Just got my Speed Editor with Studio. Since I'm new to video editors AND Resolve, I picked up on this tool QUICKLY. It's awesome!! Much faster and better accuracy than the mouse for traversing clips and populating the timeline. So glad this came with Studio. Basically a must-have freebie! However, I do have a couple design 'gripes' for BMD... 1) Alter the wheel - lighten it (it's like starting and stopping a bowling ball), add some additional turning friction (it's too loose), lose the dimple and add some grip material to the face instead. 2) Change the keys - what's with the 1980s IBM Selectric keys?? Use low travel keys with a slight snap (i.e. ThinkPad laptop). Make key caps changeable and offer button re-mapping software option so users can personalize/optimize their workflow. Then this sucker would be PERFECT :)

I'm eagerly awaiting mine. I'm in the US and as far as I can tell, none have been shipped here yet, with the exception of a few for review by established Vlogers. I ordered mine as soon as B&H posted the promotion. B&H recently sent an email saying they are still on back order. It appears that they were first released in Japan, now the UK and the customers in the US are having to wait (this is my conclusion based on unboxing videos available on TH-cam).
Anyway, thank you for making such well presented and thoughtful videos. Your style of instruction on Davinci Resolve is easy to understand, cogent and produced with excellent quality. Definitely some of the best tutorials I've had the pleasure of viewing.

Thanks, Alex. After watching your video just after the launch, I bought the SE. It took time to transition out of my old methods of editing - it's fair to say I'm not in my first flush of youth - as I was learning Studio as well. But it crept up on me. A couple of months ago, the SE stopped working. It refused to switch on. The problem, rather ironically, was the software for my Logitech keyboard. I felt hamstrung without the SE. Everything took so much longer. It's wasn't until I lost it that I realised how dependent I was on it. (There's a story of an old girlfriend that was oddly similar.) Back up and running now. It was like finding an old friend. I thoroughly recommend not only buying the SE - you can still find offers of Studio 'thrown in' - but sticking with it in the Cut Page for as long as needed. So much faster, so much smoother, and, a big bonus for me, I no longer have to think so much. Thanks again.

So, I ended up buying a license because I got tired of plugging my dongle in, and figured id take advantage of the speed editor freebie before it goes away. 1st off, I ALWAYS used the cut page and was quite surprised to hear how many people NEVER really use it. its like the best thing ever to block out a project. yes I do wish the SE worked in edit page better, hopefully BM will come up with some new firmware, or at least something to let us assign hotkeys (really, who uses 'smooth cut' that much to need an entire button). anyway, my bit of advice is for everyone to get something like a stream deck that wil le you assign hotkeys. I use mine and set up "track pick" so in the edit page I just click a button and it toggles the tracks. a must have if youre moving over to hardware controllers and don't want to keep going back to the keyboard. it was a life saver. only other thing is the jog wheel is REALLY sensitive. if I bump it with a finger it moves ha ha.. but really smooth and nice ball bearings in there, I love it.. thanks for the video tut!!

Just recently got the streamdeck+ to go along with the speed editor, first thing i have added is a multifunction dial it has timeline, clip, frame, and 1 sec so timeline goes to beginning or end of timeline clip navigates to edit points frame +/- 1 frame and 1 sec button jumps forward or back 1 second. These buttons work in the timeline or the source or destination window. The Q button switches between source and destination panes cmd1 and cmd2 work to switch between the media panel content and folders (the clip dial function navigates between clips and enter takes them to the source window. Short version you can do really fast 3 point editing with a combination of the speed editor and. the streamdeck+ Resolve has lots of shortcuts built in so really you. are just exposing that functionality in a way thats easier to work with.

Great demo, i think its cool device but imo BlackMagic shouldve included about 10 extra keys
eg up arrow, down arrow (for choosing tracks on edit page etc) and maybe 6 or 8 more keys that you can program with you own custom presets, also maybe an ALT key so you can have your own 'second layer' of functions for some keys
eg user defined macros or presetes like audio denoise, audio compress, insert logo, export or 1.5x zoom, slow mo 50% etc etc . Also i think the shouldve included a play at 1.2x speed and play at 1p35x buttona, where you can easily press play(at faster rate) and jump back to play at slower rate if you need to carefully listen to dialogue etc.

would be nice to be able to zoom in and out the timeline on the edit page using the jog wheel.
About cut page: "Zooming in and out of edit timelines is very slow! The dual timeline means you never have to zoom again! The upper timeline shows you the entire program while the lower timeline shows you a zoomed-in area of where you're working."

As a follow-up I see that it isn't necessary to be right on the transition mark so I guess it's not really necessary to go forward to next or back to previous. What happens often is if there is not enough space to add a dissolve I usually go to the edit page and right click and it will do an automatic trim for 15 or 20 or 30 frames. I suppose the way to do this on the cut page would be to trim a little from clit one and then trim a little from clip two and then hit dissolve and that will probably accomplish the same thing. I'll give that a try and see if it works. This editor was worth the purchase. Thanks as always for your great videos

The physical build quality looks awesome. But the fact it's so restrictive in its use, only in Resolve and add to that only really in the cut page.... kills my interest massively.

Tell that to editors from a Lightworks background. Many Davinci Resolve users skip the Cut page entirely, but that's just a misunderstanding of the purpose of an offline edit. It functions in the same way one of the old Lightworks offline machines functioned back in the day. The Speed Editor doesn't have the Lightworks controller's robust physicality or intelligent layout design, but anything is better than just a keyboard and mouse when it comes to skilful editing. Even a ShuttlePro is preferable to the stock standard PC input devices, limited though it is..

Great video! I'm seeing a lot of real-world use for this. It looks like with a little bit of practice, cutting multi cam interviews could be very fast. Great prospects for news, film rough cuts, etc. I will likely end up using this more than color wheels (which are borderline useless when you use curves 95% of the time.)
