I think they should offer Davinci Resolve Studio with it. I believe it would be a lot more compelling to buy. I was kind of surprised they didn't offer DR studio with it when it was first announced
Yeah i agree actually. I know they do include Studio with their Pocket Cameras which aren't that much more expensive than the keyboard so I'm surprised they don't as well!
It's just smart on their end. If you purchase this keyboard you have to use it with Davinci Resolve, meaning if you can afford this, you can afford the software or already own it. However, if you buy one of their cameras, you can choose to edit with whatever software you want. Getting Davinci Resolve Studio for free help encourage people into their ecosystem....people who may one day buy this keyboard. lol...Genius

People love to hate what’s not made exactly for them. The $50K macPro is made for those Pixar studios houses not your youtube projects. Same with this keyboard, if you shoot tiny clips because you’re trying to become the next transition star then this makes no sense. Don’t hate, it’s simply not for you. People who complain about it being overpriced, there’s cheaper options, move along instead of hating. I shoot surgeries which are shot continuously so for me the ability to scroll over hours of footage (multiple cameras) in full screen and easily add ins and out and append the important parts is huge! I think that unless you do something similar (motion pictures, small budgrt films etc) it’s prob not for you.

You did a good job showcasing this keyboard. That wheel is pretty awesome and really helps close the gap between traditional-desktop && touchscreen functionality. And, if you were to make your own mech-keyboard and compatible wheel -- I could only imagine the nightmare of truly be able to configure it to DaVinci like the one you've shown here. I could not even imagine how you would program a wheel/knob to reach this same level of functionality, reliably, and seamlessly. Cheers!

Blackmagic Design did send me the keyboard for a short period. They didn't ask for a review or anything in return etc. I just had the chance to play with it so figured it was worth talking about. 🙂👍
Hey Alex, I just switched over from the Speed Editor to the Editor Keyboard. Yes, it's quite long, but compared to the speed editor + standard keyboard, it's a space saver on my desk. Also, you mentioned that there is no windows key, which is true, but the command key works as a windows key in all respects. Thanks for another great video!
It is out of my price range right now, I don't edit enough to justify it yet. But this is one of those tools that can quickly pay for itself depending how much you charge for editing and how much time it would save you.

I'm a new DaVinci editor… The cost of studio in the US right now is 299 the cost with this keyboard is 599 so 300 extra. I was looking at the other alternative for labeled keyboards and it was only about 150 more and adds the jog wheek. It arrives today. I'm looking forward to it a lot. I also bought an LED under monitor light that's dimmable and that should help a lot.
This is the first video I've seen on the keyboard and it's very well done. Thank you for showing the inserts of the keyboard while you were making the edits. That really helped me determine that I desperately want one of these! lol. I do a lot of cross-editing between DaVinci and FCP and I wish Apple would make one of these as well.
Dear friend I am a retired editor. work with the sonny 2000 and cmx. Today I use kadenlive as a hobby. I want to tell you that the keyboard it shows is not so far from the keyboards we used 20 years ago. I'm sure you can do many things better but it brings back many memories.
You know, this thing amazes me! It closes the gap should have been closed DACADES back, between true Betacam cutting stationrecorders/remotes and computer-era software based workflow. It's what my heart needed! BUT. There are major flaws I can't close my eyes on: 1) Layout. Up arrow between slash and shift is really wrong Razer-like solution. 2) Jog can't be pressed - but it could be so nice and useful 3) F-keys have no gaps between them. And it makes navigation messy somehow 4) Enter is too small 5) illumination. Not even regular one to light up the letters, but the illumination we have on real cutting stations, when the key is a signal lamp. I'd LOVE it. For a thousand bucks I'm not sure now I will buy it, I doubt. But if they will release a v2 with all those thing fixed - oh yeah! It would be a dream
I was thinking the same thing. It needs a few 7 segment led displays for timecodes. I've tried a few jog wheel accessories but nothing quite has the same feel as that nice over built 80/90's equipment.
As someone genuinely interested, i found it impossible to see the detail that well through the bizarre color grade or LUT you’ve chosen. Just roll it back. It’s a little heavy and strangely magenta on the top end.

Great kit , but it's a real shame that Blackmagic won't talk to Loupedeck about the Loupdeck+ - better much more affordable ergonomics. Narrow minded of them.

I don’t recall where I came across it but there is a fairly good alternative editors keyboard out there that goes for under 300 dollars I believe and does more or less all the same things. It also had some keyboard mapping functions if memory serves and that means you can customize it to do what you are familiar with from any other NLE. May be worth a search for those who want the speed but not the depleted account balance.
Yeaah i've seen a few others as well. Most I've seen are just 'regular' keyboards but with the shortcuts labeled on the keys etc. I might try and pick one up at some point for a demo etc. Something else i'm interested in is one of those Elgato Stream Decks. I think they could be really useful!
Just to clarify my thoughts; I do not believe it to be ‘overpriced’. It is however, over-engineered for a Muggle like me! It’s designed to last a lifetime and to be used by professionals in a professional environment. Not a random dude in a poorly lit spare room on a crappy Ikea table 😅 Its the value to you that's key and for me, it simply doesn't provide enough value for the expense.

It's overpriced. Without that extra keys and "potentiometer" keyboard like that would cost approx $150 if not less ( ~$70 if it wasn't metal ), so you're basically saying that this few extra buttons and "potentiometer mechanism" costs $845.. come on.. it's max $30 for the extras making this keyboards reasonable MSRP ~$199 Max :D It doesn't even have LED/RGB, it's also not waterproof ( assuming many ppl works with a coffee on their desk it should've been must have ). On another hand for what it does which is speeds up your workflow it could be good investment, but it doesn't make it not overpriced and that's exactly why they set the price high, because who needs it gonna buy it anyway and for hi level professional editors 1K is probably pennies. P.S. Gonna be a bit of captain obvious here but it's not designed for lifetime, the mech switches last ~50 million clicks per switch, so it's approx 10-20years before first most used key gonna stop working requiring manual repair or replacing keyboard, but the keyboard probably will get spilled on sooner since i believe it's the main reason of all keyboard failures besides smashing them during rage and from a business perspective not making it waterproof just gonna multiply the sales from ppl who spills coffee/drinks alot :D

Here's a challenge for you. Do a 5x timewarp recording on the GoPro and record the sound separately with a recording device of your choice. Then in Davinci Resolve synchronise the speeded up sound with the video.
Helped me make up my mind as to whether I should buy this keyboard for work with an another editing laptop - in addition to the mini editor I purchased last year (which is really, really useful, making the cutting of clips together a whole lot more fun!). I think another mini editor is the way forward for me, allied with a traditional keyboard. Many thanks.
I'm one of the few that probably actually bought and uses this keyboard a lot. It's cut my project rough cuts by 75%. I like the key action, but I absolutely HATE the arrow key placement. If you're used to a regular shift key and you're like me and usually hit the right shift key, then you'll hit the up key every time. It took me a month before I got out of that motion. The jog wheel is insanely high quality and the different jog modes are incredible. They've added more functionality to the edit page with it over time -- and I've actually added custom shortcuts to the edit page to maximize the kb's usefulness. But it's definitely NOT for the person who does 1-2 videos a week. The keyboard lighting hasn't ever impacted me. I don't mix in low light, and honestly, I don't ever look at the keyboard. After a few days of using it, I had it memorized.
Looks an amazing keyboard and a must-have if you do video editing for a job I'd expect. I'd be interested in what's the cheapest computer you can get that allows fast Video editing. I'm using a Microsoft Surface Core 7 and when I edit 4k, it is VERY slow .... even slow in HD.
Hiya buddy. Yeah it's a nice bit of kit for sure! I'd like to do a video at some point and go through the minimum and recommended specifications for Davinci Resolve etc. I'd also really like to try get some review units of Laptops if i can so i can test them out with Resolve. There's nobody else really doing it so i think it could be really useful (plus i get to play with laptops lol). What i'd really, really love to do this year is to build a new PC that meets the min spec for Resolve and do a give away. Obv that's not cheap though 😅 We'll see. It's a long way off but i'd love to do it.

Really nice explanation. Do you use anything similar yourself for editing? I'm using this and the Speed Editor vid to relate how the Loupedeck CT is programmed to make a better Davinci profile.
I made a custom illumination preset for my keyboard, so I can find shortcuts easier. It looks kinda similar in this mode. I personally just use Resolve not that often so i wont buy an extra keyboard.
I won't be buying yet, until the backlighting feature is added on future models. I won't wan't to pay that much only to struggle with nocturnal edits. I usually have my home studio darkened so backlit keys is a must for me, especially at such high price point

Thanks - ended up buying the smaller/cheaper Speed Editor and I use it extensively. Just couldn't find a reason to spend the extra £££ on the full keyboard..

Very nice demo, Alex. I was wondering how that keyboard faired. As you say, though, for the cost you would have to be a pretty hard core editor to justify the cost vs time saved factor. I think I'll stick with my mouse for now.
Do any of the buttons on this allow you to quickly move a clip or an in out into the currently selected bin without dragging it? My workflow involves a LOT of cutting, moving into bins, and then putting them together on the timeline. I would pay $1000 just to have to never move a clip into a bin via dragging again. And I can't find a shortcut to do so otherwise.
It is quite big, but not so big. I could fit in on my desktop. The problem is, i would still have to have regular keyboard, because they moved cursors, removed and right ALT key, so when you want to write anything and you live in country having some extra characters like polish Ą, Ę, Ź, ć, ż, ź.... you can't do this using this keyboard. Also, i'm used to old school copy paste what was only option before Windows introduced CTRL+C, CTRL+V, i'm still using CTRL+INS, SHIFT+INS that is easy to hit with your right hand, but there is no INS/HOME/DEL... part of keyboard, and CTRL is in wrong place when you are used to using it. And having 2 keyboards on desktop and switching between them is too much for me.
Yeah that's a totally valid point dude. Also for me, my day job is in IT so i sit on a 'normal' keyboard all day. So it never gets easy to get used to two quite different keyboard layouts.
No prev/next frame/clip buttons next to the jog wheel. :/ Also rev/pause/play are not near the jog wheel. Surprisingly few keys related to colour. and that shortened right shift key could be a problem in proper 10 finger typing.

Problem with this keyboard, if you even remotely don’t like the standard shortkey layout, it’s too bad. I can’t use this thing cause I’m using a lot of custom short keys I brought over from my premiere workflow. It’s too bad they didn’t make this without the labels on the general part of the keyboard. May I ask a question that's not about the keyboard? Just about all I know about Davinci Resolve I've learned from you. And thank, you thank you... I am so in your debt. BUT how do you learn it? No amount of poking about would reveal to me how these things work. I've tried. I know.
Hiya James. Yeah of course. It's a combination of all sorts really. Most is just repetition and learning Ins and Outs etc. For some of my Resolve Feature style videos which I've not done often myself (like Multicam for example), i read the manual once to get a really rough grasp of the process but without knowing all the details. Then i try it myself a bunch of times. This helps me really grasp it from a 'beginner' perspective so when i do my tutorials, i can hopefully include the common pitfalls users might experience. For the creative style vids (Transitions). It's just a case of watching others TH-cam videos (Vloggers etc, not other Resolve tuts, i try to avoid those so as not to be influenced) to see common techniques and then try to think of the easiest way to replicate in Resolve.

If I'm not wrong, all the features that you used here can be done with the DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor, right? So this keyboard looks more intended for further functionality in the EDIT PAGE rather than in the CUT PAGE. Do you see it like that?

Thanks for the walkthrough. I really like the keyboard. But, I'll have to wait until I have an extra $1,000 lying around before I would consider buying it. At the moment, I still have some film gear I'd rather pick up first. So, the keyboard will have to wait. Chances are, I will probably eventually pick it up since Resolve is my go-to app for pretty much everything film wise.
I think I would shell out the money if it was like $300? maybe $350. $1k is a lot, especially considering can get color grading board from Davinci for that much. Does it work with Premiere as well?
I just bought the editor keyboad and love it, I hope to get an answer to my question about the F/TC key. Everytine I press is to get to a certain location on a mediapool clip via timecode, the number field switches to frame count, in other words everytime I press the F/TC key it defaults to frame count. I have right clicked on the number field to change it back ti tC display, but it seems to switch back to frame count. How can that be fixed?
This keyboard is nice, but keep in mind that you’ll sacrifice basic keyboard functions like print Screen, entering BIOS etc. It’s an inconvenience having 2 keyboards to fully access your PC’s keyboard options. I defiantly don’t recommend it for home or everyday use. You’re better off with the speed editor!
Cheers Jerry 🙂👍 Yeaah i'd definitely recommend upgrading your computer first. One thing using the Jog wheel does is highlight the flaws in your system! It takes quite alot of power to scrub smoothly though the timeline, especially at over 1080p.
It must be a lovely keyboard, on the other hand ordinary keyboard could do well also. With an off the rack keyboard and an extra jog-shuttle the same work can be done. I personally have an Apple keyboard with an overlay of plastic, it has almost the same number of keys, almost, but not completely.

CB that's the big issue. The pages need to become more similar. Now it's like at least 3 different software's stuck together. I want more uniform.
@@DrHansBrewery Yeah I'd agree with that. The Color page isn't going to change anytime soon though, they've too much invested in it with all the grading panel hardware etc.

Great kit , but it's a real shame that Blackmagic won't talk to Loupedeck about the Loupdeck+ - better much more affordable ergonomics. Narrow minded of them.
Good demo Alex, thanks. I don’t recall where I came across it but there is a fairly good alternative editors keyboard out there that goes for under 300 dollars I believe and does more or less all the same things. It also had some keyboard mapping functions if memory serves and that means you can customize it to do what you are familiar with from any other NLE. May be worth a search for those who want the speed but not the depleted account balance.
Yeaah i've seen a few others as well. Most I've seen are just 'regular' keyboards but with the shortcuts labeled on the keys etc. I might try and pick one up at some point for a demo etc.
Something else i'm interested in is one of those Elgato Stream Decks. I think they could be really useful!
Just to clarify my thoughts; I do not believe it to be ‘overpriced’. It is however, over-engineered for a Muggle like me! It’s designed to last a lifetime and to be used by professionals in a professional environment. Not a random dude in a poorly lit spare room on a crappy Ikea table 😅
Its the value to you that's key and for me, it simply doesn't provide enough value for the expense.

It's overpriced. Without that extra keys and "potentiometer" keyboard like that would cost approx $150 if not less ( ~$70 if it wasn't metal ), so you're basically saying that this few extra buttons and "potentiometer mechanism" costs $845.. come on.. it's max $30 for the extras making this keyboards reasonable MSRP ~$199 Max :D
It doesn't even have LED/RGB, it's also not waterproof ( assuming many ppl works with a coffee on their desk it should've been must have ).
On another hand for what it does which is speeds up your workflow it could be good investment, but it doesn't make it not overpriced and that's exactly why they set the price high, because who needs it gonna buy it anyway and for hi level professional editors 1K is probably pennies.
P.S. Gonna be a bit of captain obvious here but it's not designed for lifetime, the mech switches last ~50 million clicks per switch, so it's approx 10-20years before first most used key gonna stop working requiring manual repair or replacing keyboard, but the keyboard probably will get spilled on sooner since i believe it's the main reason of all keyboard failures besides smashing them during rage and from a business perspective not making it waterproof just gonna multiply the sales from ppl who spills coffee/drinks alot :D
@@ExacoMvm A full metal custom mechanical keyboard costs 400-800 Dollars. And yes. this BlackMagic Keyboard should be treated as a custom keyboard. I think the price is fair. If someone makes a Blender keyboard like this with that price I would buy it.

Here's a challenge for you. Do a 5x timewarp recording on the GoPro and record the sound separately with a recording device of your choice. Then in Davinci Resolve synchronise the speeded up sound with the video.

Helped me make up my mind as to whether I should buy this keyboard for work with an another editing laptop - in addition to the mini editor I purchased last year (which is really, really useful, making the cutting of clips together a whole lot more fun!). I'm one of the few that probably actually bought and uses this keyboard a lot. It's cut my project rough cuts by 75%. I like the key action, but I absolutely HATE the arrow key placement. If you're used to a regular shift key and you're like me and usually hit the right shift key, then you'll hit the up key every time. It took me a month before I got out of that motion. The jog wheel is insanely high quality and the different jog modes are incredible. They've added more functionality to the edit page with it over time -- and I've actually added custom shortcuts to the edit page to maximize the kb's usefulness. But it's definitely NOT for the person who does 1-2 videos a week. The keyboard lighting hasn't ever impacted me. I don't mix in low light, and honestly, I don't ever look at the keyboard. After a few days of using it, I had it memorized.
Just curious, but would you say it's better/faster/different than just having custom shortcuts on a regular keyboard?

I'd like to do a video at some point and go through the minimum and recommended specifications for Davinci Resolve etc. I'd also really like to try get some review units of Laptops if i can so i can test them out with Resolve. There's nobody else really doing it so i think it could be really useful (plus i get to play with laptops lol).
What i'd really, really love to do this year is to build a new PC that meets the min spec for Resolve and do a give away. Obv that's not cheap though 😅 We'll see. It's a long way off but i'd love to do it.

I made a custom illumination preset for my keyboard, so I can find shortcuts easier. It looks kinda similar in this mode. I personally just use Resolve not that often so i wont buy an extra keyboard.

I won't be buying yet, until the backlighting feature is added on future models. I won't wan't to pay that much only to struggle with nocturnal edits. I usually have my home studio darkened so backlit keys is a must for me, especially at such high price point

Thanks - ended up buying the smaller/cheaper Speed Editor and I use it extensively. Just couldn't find a reason to spend the extra £££ on the full keyboard..

The keyboard is a tough one. I really enjoyed it but it's alot of money for what it is. I don't edit professional so it's a touch sell but for you, it may make more sense.

For half the price, honestly, i'm sure you even can design a metal one yourself, this is ridiculy expensive.
Very nice demo, Alex. I was wondering how that keyboard faired. As you say, though, for the cost you would have to be a pretty hard core editor to justify the cost vs time saved factor. I think I'll stick with my mouse for now.

Do any of the buttons on this allow you to quickly move a clip or an in out into the currently selected bin without dragging it? My workflow involves a LOT of cutting, moving into bins, and then putting them together on the timeline. I would pay $1000 just to have to never move a clip into a bin via dragging again. And I can't find a shortcut to do so otherwise.
It is quite big, but not so big. I could fit in on my desktop. The problem is, i would still have to have regular keyboard, because they moved cursors, removed and right ALT key, so when you want to write anything and you live in country having some extra characters like polish Ą, Ę, Ź, ć, ż, ź.... you can't do this using this keyboard.
Also, i'm used to old school copy paste what was only option before Windows introduced CTRL+C, CTRL+V, i'm still using CTRL+INS, SHIFT+INS that is easy to hit with your right hand, but there is no INS/HOME/DEL... part of keyboard, and CTRL is in wrong place when you are used to using it.
And having 2 keyboards on desktop and switching between them is too much for me.

Also for me, my day job is in IT so i sit on a 'normal' keyboard all day. So it never gets easy to get used to two quite different keyboard layouts.
No prev/next frame/clip buttons next to the jog wheel. :/
Also rev/pause/play are not near the jog wheel.
Surprisingly few keys related to colour. and that shortened right shift key could be a problem in proper 10 finger typing.
Agree with the comment. Indeed really nice keyboard. But for those doing this a lot. Hefty price tag with a 1000 usd 🤔

Problem with this keyboard, if you even remotely don’t like the standard shortkey layout, it’s too bad. I can’t use this thing cause I’m using a lot of custom short keys I brought over from my premiere workflow. It’s too bad they didn’t make this without the labels on the general part of the keyboard. Seems like a nice one
May I ask a question that's not about the keyboard? Just about all I know about Davinci Resolve I've learned from you. And thank, you thank you... I am so in your debt.
BUT how do you learn it? No amount of poking about would reveal to me how these things work. I've tried. I know.
Hiya James. Yeah of course.
It's a combination of all sorts really. Most is just repetition and learning Ins and Outs etc.
For some of my Resolve Feature style videos which I've not done often myself (like Multicam for example), i read the manual once to get a really rough grasp of the process but without knowing all the details. Then i try it myself a bunch of times. This helps me really grasp it from a 'beginner' perspective so when i do my tutorials, i can hopefully include the common pitfalls users might experience.
For the creative style vids (Transitions). It's just a case of watching others TH-cam videos (Vloggers etc, not other Resolve tuts, i try to avoid those so as not to be influenced) to see common techniques and then try to think of the easiest way to replicate in Resolve.

If I'm not wrong, all the features that you used here can be done with the DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor, right? So this keyboard looks more intended for further functionality in the EDIT PAGE rather than in the CUT PAGE. Do you see it like that?

Thanks for the walkthrough. I really like the keyboard. But, I'll have to wait until I have an extra $1,000 lying around before I would consider buying it. At the moment, I still have some film gear I'd rather pick up first. So, the keyboard will have to wait. Chances are, I will probably eventually pick it up since Resolve is my go-to app for pretty much everything film wise.
I think I would shell out the money if it was like $300? maybe $350. $1k is a lot, especially considering can get color grading board from Davinci for that much. Does it work with Premiere as well?
I just bought the editor keyboad and love it, I hope to get an answer to my question about the F/TC key. Everytine I press is to get to a certain location on a mediapool clip via timecode, the number field switches to frame count, in other words everytime I press the F/TC key it defaults to frame count. I have right clicked on the number field to change it back ti tC display, but it seems to switch back to frame count. How can that be fixed?
will this work on after effects as well? or just resolve?
I'm not 100% but i'd guess it's just Resolve. It didn't work with any of my other software etc.

This keyboard is nice, but keep in mind that you’ll sacrifice basic keyboard functions like print Screen, entering BIOS etc. It’s an inconvenience having 2 keyboards to fully access your PC’s keyboard options. I defiantly don’t recommend it for home or everyday use. You’re better off with the speed editor!

Yeaah i'd definitely recommend upgrading your computer first. One thing using the Jog wheel does is highlight the flaws in your system! It takes quite alot of power to scrub smoothly though the timeline, especially at over 1080p.
For that insane price, I can't find any versions with a different layout then US-English.
How hard is it to transition after years of using a mouse? I feel like I'd be tempted to reach for the mouse at every turn.

It must be a lovely keyboard, on the other hand ordinary keyboard could do well also. With an off the rack keyboard and an extra jog-shuttle the same work can be done. I personally have an Apple keyboard with an overlay of plastic, it has almost the same number of keys, almost, but not completely.
