  • In the 2018 New Year's Honours list he received a Knighthood for services to travel, culture and geography. Therefore, he is now officially Sir Michael Palin.
Michael Palin needs little introduction because of his long standing involvement with Monty Python.
We were lucky with this interview because we were invited to the Python offices in London to make the recording. The interviewer is Dave Owen and it was recorded in April 1983.

I have been and remain a fan of Michael and the rest of the Pythons (I had to watch the 'Argument' sketch twice because I was laughing so hard. Thank you. 'Life of Brian' was brilliant. Michael has gone on to bigger things but thanks Mike, you remain interesting.

A great interview … I learned a lot about the nuts and bolts of writing in the late 1960s-70s. Thanks. A treasure.

Lovely bit of archive, although I was very distracted by Dave Owen's haircut! :)

I don't doubt its his real hair, but it looks just a BIT like one of the 3 guys behind the toupee counter in the Ant sketch. Slightly more frightening than intended.

Micheal has leading man qualities.... too bad he didnt get more to do. Love him. I guess I shouldnt be greedy ...he did a bunch, like Brazil for instance.

Michael would have been a great leading man, but he said himself that he didn't like doing "Hollywood". That was his choice but it's our loss.

@@DinaraTengri Ya, in another interview he said he liked being the "off character" as it was much more fun. He was so good in a Fish Called Wanda, Cleese changed the script to make Michael the hilarious part of the story.

From the stilted presentation I thought the interviewer was reading his questions, then on a cut to him, it's just the way he talks...

Na, you got it right the first time. This was the terrible American way of news reporting that made it to the UK for a while. It's a one camera shoot so the reporter gets as much screen time as he can. So when the camera is pointed to the reporter, he actually is reading the question from a card and Michael is long gone. In fact, considering how different the voice tone is in the shot, there's a chance the interviewer is asking those questions in a completely different location. I don't think Michael Palin would have the pictures of his movie up like that.

You're quite correct. This was shot single camera (film style) on location at the Python Offices in London. Our time with him was limited and did not allow for cutaway questions to be asked and recorded, as we had to vacate the office. Questions, which had to be added, were recorded elsewhere, and this happens a lot in fact. This is not American style, it's what happened in news and TV reporting from the early days of TV and still happens today (unless you enjoy 'whip-pans' from one person to the other).
It's how film for cinema is shot every single day...
