  • Check out my thoughts on what to do when you purchase a vehicle that uses an oil injection system. Many times there are things you just have to learn over time when being a mechanic. This is one of those "just better check it" situations. If you don't, you'll wish you did in a hurry.

You will see that many of the tips and procedures used are universal for skill sets "every mechanic should know" and that the biggest value to my videos is the teaching of these skills that are not found in a service manual.
I often get asked this question:
Q: How does one learn these skill sets "every mechanic should know" if they are not found in a manual?
A: NUMBER 1.....GET DIRTY and start wrenching.
    -Ask questions
-Find a seasoned craftsman to mentor under
-Tech schools can significantly speed this time up
    -Research, read, watch TH-cam videos
Tip: You will never learn it all from one source or in a short time period. No matter what craft you are trying to master, YOU must be dedicated and put the time in. THERE IS NO BETTER WAY TO LEARN THAN DOING! I will say it again, you must actually do the work to master it. You cannot just watch or read about it and master anything.
You want to be a master bike builder, mechanic, welder, nurse, carpenter or you fill in the blank?
-Don't take for granted opportunities to learn deeper
    -Be humble and seek advice
-Be intentional with your learning plan
-Don't blame a school, job or your parents for not giving you ever answer, go get it!
I teach a motorcycle/powersports technician program at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City, Iowa. I had a so-called certified mechanic install the oil pump linkage on my 2-stroke outboard on the wrong side. It was easy enough to do since it just clips on. It took me years of trying to figure out why it was running rich, idling poorly, smoking like crazy, and fouling plugs to finally search up a shop manual that showed a drawing of the pump set up correctly. The fix literally took 2 seconds and not only did it now look like the picture, but setting marks for idle and WOT now lined up. I paid that guy some serious money to screw that up for me.
Other things I discovered he put back on wrong: The hose that is supposed to deliver water from the top of the engine to the poppet valve was run straight to the tell-tale, and the hose that is supposed to go to the tell-tale was run through the thermal air valve to the poppet valve. Like, seriously. He had to add a hose to do it. The hose that was supposed to go from the thermal air valve to the carburetors was just lying in the bottom of the cowling. I'm surprised it ran at all. This also required a dive into the service manual for me to find a diagram of the correct plumbing. Now I am concerned if he managed to screw things up this badly on the outside, did he get the work he was doing inside the engine correct? It seems to run ok now, but short of tearing the powerhead open I can't inspect it.
Then, this other time I had the steering cable replaced by a different shop, and the joker managed to put the pinion upside-down so that the boat steered backwards! (The motor needed to be lifted to get the cable in/out is why I didn't do it myself.) He also managed to crush the transom by over-torqueing 2 of the bolts. Luckily the shop fixed it for free and fired the guy but it was still a huge hassle.
I've also had nothing but trouble with a KLX250 that had an after market exhaust on it. I figured I was getting a deal until I found out that the carb had been modified and the airbox as well, so it had lots of power but otherwise ran like crap! It took me a new carburetor and snorkel to finally get it running correctly. (Yes, snorkel. People thing removing it gives more airflow, and it does at low speeds, but it creates turbulence at high speeds. Kawasaki didn't spend the money to equip the bike with the snorkel just to make it worse! You ain't making it better by removing it! Same with drilling holes in the air box and other dumb things people do.)
Folks, be careful who you let wrench on your stuff! And if the owner worked on it, assume whatever he did needs to be undone or redone, and there might be serious damage as a result of his work.
Bottom line: Buy new if you can afford it, and only use certified mechanics with lots of references. Most people, even so-called mechanics, have an unending ability to screw things up royally.

I wish there was a way I could show you this somewhere else, now I see what's really happening. The seller had capped off the nipple cone from the oil tank and capped off two other Hoses connecting to the oil pump. And the hose connected to the manifold... IS JUST CONNECTED TO THE OTHER VACUUM LINE OF THE GAS VENT PETCOCK.. man are some folks stupid. I thank you for showing this. And I'm saying g this now because this is the exact same scooter I have and now I see where that's supposed to be going. I appreciate it

My jet ski mechanic tells me 2 stroke oil injectors rarely fail. What causes the problem is old supply lines that get brittle and leak . Replace your oil injector lines often and you are fine running straight gasoline.

I am repairing a golf cart for a friend it has the same style pump I took the pump apart and nothing is stuck lose or worn and seems to move correctly, my question is how can you tell if the pump is bad? Most people are just scared of systems they don't understand, can't see it with your eyes you can't have faith in it! I think they are a proven injection pump system if maintenance is kept up right changing filters regularly.
For instance the golf cart I am working on scored the cylinder but the root cause was crank bearings it was sucking air through them along with a bunch of dirt.

On some motors one of the oil feed lines lubricates an engine bearing, so if you decommision the pump and run premix only you starve one of the crank bearings.

And it's also necessary on a lot of motorcycle engines to maintain that oil pump because it not only mixes with the fuel, it lubricates engine parts. Premixing only works until you burn up your engine.

@@johnjriggsarchery2457 100% bullshit. You dont know what you are talking about. It does not lubricate any engine parts. Thats what the crank oil is for. It injects oil into carb. I've personally seen 3 motors blow due to oil pump.

I would'nt want to guess...But here is what I have done. I start with a high quality oil (synthetic MC-1 is my fav) they recommend 50:1 and then I do alot of spark plug reading to determine if there are any concerns or adjustments needed. No mix and wide open or extended use in any range! Lots of checking to dial in to a mix for you. there are a lot of factors that could cause problems though...If you would like those list of detailed factors make a donation to our work and I'll take the time to to chat or write it out for you! So, you mentioned the importance of verifying the oil injection system but I'm not really seeing how to verify it, other than making sure there's not some bb jammed in the line?

      Hi Joel,
Its a pretty old video and I'd have to watch it all to see or point out a time. I would think I would have mentioned that there are 3 steps to always do:
      1. verify oil comes out the bleed screw (while buring air)
      2. Verify oil is full in the lines to the carb/intake (and pumping)
      3. Check how the spark plugs are burning...
👍 Thank you for taking the time to comment! It helps us!

He was basically saying verify if the system as been manipulated. If you assume the oil injection system is doing its job and just throw regular gas in the gas tank you'll blow it up. He just wants you to know if you need to premix or not was the purpose of this vid.

man...i just rebuilt a polaris trailboss 250. and i am so fkn paranoid that the oil pump isnt working... i took it apart while i had the engine off and cleaned it and just checked the little diaphram and o-rings. but the bike doesn't smoke.. i rode it for about 10 min and she seems to run great. but the engine is noisy. im hoping its just the pull start that is noisy but its hard to tell. the clear line that run from pump to maniold is full. but i cant tell..i like to see smoke on a dam 2 stroke. the plug looks perfect nice light brown. i pulled maniold off and its dry.. the piston looks ok and looks a little wet. idk i cant afford to fry this topened

If unsure if the oil pump is working on a fresh engine, your always better off adding a little premix to the first tank and then pulling the oil output line and watching it pump out...which that with bleeding as shown should ALWAYS be done anyway...make sense?

Older bikes feed oil to the intake, and the crank bearing on the oil pump side. Check to see if that is the case.
If it is, leave the tank, and that line, or run it on a loop from the case itself.

      What bike is it?
If the bike has 2 lines coming from the oiler, yes. If it only oils the intake, you can just premixed, but there wont be oil in the pump.
A re-route is for bikes with 2 lines. You disconnect and plug the oiler to intake line, and the hole, but leave the one that goes to the crank. Then you have the pump take oil from the case, and premix.
The easiest way is to just use it as-is if it has a crank oiler.
      Cheers

Unlikely as the engine case is not built with it in mind...google for a kit and see what pops up...

@@How2Wrench not sure when it where your next life session is. I am in San Antonio Texas and this build I am currently working on has been an interesting lesson in thinking outside the box and self fabricating things just out if parts and other stuff I've had lying around.the complete wiring harness is homemade. The jackshaft is all self-fabricated, as well as the bottom bracket with sealed bearings and the spindle for the pedal chainring. The exhaust I am currently in the design process to get the look I want and as close to a tuned pipe I can do myself out if a few hand tools. Nothing that I have fabricated has been created in a shop or with shop tools. This will be a very fun and nice running 66cc motorized bicycle once I get the rest of the fabrication finished. I thought I had heard about newer carbs that had the oil injection built in them?

Have you ever seen the gear drive that drives the oil pump , 9 times out of 10 there plastic , if you want to rely on a plastic gear drive to lube your engine then good luck with that one , most guys with scooters that are modified just delete the pump and run premix , heaps better , much simpler , less stuff hanging off your motor ie oil lines , oil tank and pump drive and your motor gains a little more power from not having to drive that stupid pump.
