Growing up as NES/SNES kids, Christmas was always an exciting time of year. My brother and I would usually get two new games for Christmas from our parents, and possibly a third from our grandparents. This was a golden era for us; back in the days of writing letters to Santa haha. Times have changed, but the memories haven't. Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to SNES drunk, and to all the wonderful people that comment on your videos and share the joy an nostalgia of yesteryear. 🎄🎅⭐✡
Very similar here, although I had a couple years on my brother and sister, but still always had a wonderful Christmas due to my parent's hard work. So many great memories, a big one being in '95 where I got Chrono Trigger (which I wanted so badly being a huge RPG kid even at 11 years old) and having to pause the game for a solid hour to keep an eye on my siblings while my parents were entertaining guests.
This season I was actually trying to play every single Super Mario World Christmas-related ROM hack, so I'm really happy to see this video! My personal favorite that I came across was Trouble in Snow Land, in which you play as a Shy Guy and explore many unique Christmas/winter-themed levels. There's a really cool secret world with even more creative levels that aren't like anything I've seen any other Christmas hack attempt, so I highly recommend it!
Hey SNESDrunk, I first found your channel a little over 2 years ago after the first snow of the winter and it's become sort of a tradition to watch your videos this time of year. Every snowfall I end up thinking about the coziness of your voice, not in a weird way. It's like listening to a close uncle or an older brother. So I just want to thank you for these videos, and I also want to wish you a very merry Christmas!
Of course a RARE game would have a code that turns bananas into bells and presents and changes the music to Christmas jingles. There's a reason why these folks are absolutely legends.
Time to load up the SNES Mini with seasonal hacks and settle in with the yule log. Thank you for the great channel and can't wait for more awesomeness next year!
I liked the part where you brought up the idea of a Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball Christmas-themed ROMhack. I spent the rest of the video imagining what in the world that would even entail. A bunch of baseball players sad about not being able to spend the holidays with their families, I suppose.
I work for several pro sports teams, and I'll be working all day Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, plus I did Thanksgiving. It's worth it though, wouldn't trade it for anything!
You could even just skin the baseball game to have Christmas themed elements. Make the ball a snowball, the bat a candy cane. Bases wrapped like presents. Ump dressed like Santa. Gloves made out of gingerbread
They can certainly make teams of elves. Maybe make then represent different departments/jobs you'd expect them to have like wrapping, painting, supplies, etc. and then do some graphical and musical changes?
I have been into rom hacking for several years, but left for a while. When I came back, there were so many new hacks, so many new mods, that I experienced the same feeling of a new world opening up like you described! Even though I already experienced so much of it before. It's amazing, I really love rom hacking and modding and it makes me glad more and more people are getting into it. By the way, I recommend an iconic Super Mario World hack called "return to dinosaur land". It's a classic hack that uses all the pre-existing assets of the game, and create what feels like a long lost spiritual sequel to the game. Very good one!
@@MatthewLanning or putting it very shortly: have an SNES emulator at hand (Openemu or RetroArch with SNES core recommended for MAC users), download Rom/base of the game (Vimm vault is recommended), download a patch of the hack (Romhacking or SMW central recommended) and an online patcher to patch the original rom with the patch (hack64 online patcher is recommended in this case). Ask any questions if you need more help!
Tbh? So that's a statement you would normally not be honest about? I'm sorry, I'm just trying to figure out your dumb statement and why folks have to end their comment with "tbh" like it's a period or exclamation point.
3:01 That ice spitting enemy is from Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land. The very first Wario Land, yes. You find them mainly in the "Sherbet Land" stages.
Lisa Simpson: Wait! Don't be fooled. That hack is just regular Sonic 2 with a stupid, cheap hat. It still embodies all the awful game play mechanics it did before! Waylon Smithers: But Sonic's got a new hat! I want it! I want it I want it!
I've been watching your videos for about 8 years and I've enjoyed every minute of it. You are one of the few Content creator's that I can go back and rematch all your video without getting bored.
The penguin at 2:58 is Bumpty from Yoshi's island, and the dude at 3:02 is Bucket Head in Wario Land. Bucket Head is a snowman from the Sherbet Island world, so its on theme.
Just the type of video i was looking for! Gotta get my christmas romhacks for the kiddo and I to play this week! We have had a Mario themed christmas already lol
I've thought this for years and since it's Christmas 🎄. Thanks for ending all your videos the way you do! I know it came from not necessarily knowing how to end videos. It works and I enjoy it. 😉
6:40 I've been watching so many of the new Steamed Hams memes, when you described the romhack as "a good time" my mind automatically inserted the words "was had by all, I'm pooped!"
Christmas theme stages are some of my favorites, so thank you for bringing this idea into a video, my drunk friend By the way, I ALWAYS use the Christmas cheat in DKC3. To have a jolly good time ⛄🎄
I wish there was a playlist feature in gaming where you could queue up all of the wintery missions, levels, etc. to play in succession, and the same with Halloween. Of course, they'd have to be digital games, downloaded onto the console, and would have to be parts of the game that you've progressed to before. Gaming doesn't have an equivalent of binging Christmas movies, and taking after other media would help it go more mainstream.
I associate Super Metroid for Christmas because I did get it one year for a Christmas present and I have a memory of beating it the venturing out into a January snow storm late one night to tell my brother who was out back at the barn with my dad working on stuff.
No “EarthBound”? The game already has a wintery town with a Christmasy song, it has presents that you unwrap instead of treasure chests, and people do all kinds of crazy stuff with PK Hack, I would think there’d be Christmas stuff out the wazoo.
I really enjoy these video, and thats the reason why (combined with my OCD) I must say it's not on your "Lists" playlist. And yes, I already made a few of these comments =) Cheers!
I've seen a few Link to the Past randomizer hacks that are Christmas themed. They're not as fleshed out as the ones you showed, but they add a few festive details to make them fun..
On Super Mario World Christmas edition that little blue penguin is actually from Super Mario World 2 Yoshi's Island so I wouldn't call it a custom Sprite. That weird looking snowman thing with the bucket on his head spitting ice balls is also from Super Mario Land 3 Wario Land for the Game boy which actually is really cool that they actually managed to put that enemy in the game in a 16-bit full color Sprite despite him originating from a Game boy game.
It is a custom sprite, because it was recreated to work in the Super Mario World engine. If it's not in the original game, everything else is a custom sprite.
Since you mentioned, my biggest problem with romhacks is that I'm not a great player and most hacks are crazy difficult. I don't want to be good, I just want to play a little more of my favorite games. Could you make a video about hacks that keep the same level of difficulty?

5:34 This is why I enjoy this channel. He allowed us to enjoy the music and didn’t cut it early.
Very nice! These hacks look pretty fun! 26 years later and I never knew about that Christmas-themed cheat code in DKC 3! That's pretty awesome!
Same here, and I played the sh*t out of that as a kid and read everything about it I could get in my hands back at the time :o

I like that you included the "MERRY" code for DKC3, such an underrated game
Really hard but very rewarding. It's a lot more achievable now that save states are a feature of Nintendo Switch Online.

I love your choice of music in the intro here. Obscure DKC3 music that requires a cheat code to unlock? Deep cuts like that fuel me.
This would be a large project, but I think a Christmas-themed Link to the Past would be dope.
The Legend of Iced Hyrule (Renewed) gets close to what you're looking for.
Ganondorf possessing Santa Claus instead of Aganhim would be interesting
The randomizer has done holiday themed events that are really cool though I don’t know if they did it this year.
Christmas and Metroid does fit for me got all my Metroid games on Christmas
I love your rom hack videos. I'm just recently getting into rom hacking. It feels like a huge new world has been opened up for me

Thank you so much! I’ve been asking for this video for awhile!!
I can't shake the idea that when you spelled that code out loud, it was meant to sound like jingle bells LOL Thanks for the video SDrunk! ✌🏼
Thought the same. I think it was definitely done on purpose
Awesome video man! I never knew about these hacks before.
Samus running around a bunch of snow covered Christmas trees is pretty hilarious tbh
Lol it definitely doesn’t match the usual Metroid aesthetic, but I’ll take it!

How THE HELL do you not have at least 500,000 subs, if not 1,000,000???
Great video. How about a video on the best Christmas-themed levels? Banjo-Kajooie comes to mind.
Hey there... Thats a nice list. Super Mario Bros Wart's Wonderland and Super Mario Bros. 2 - Christmas Edition are romhacks I hightly recommend.
Spooky mission looks like its using rondo of blood assets. Pretty cool!

you heard that boys! you know what ROM HACKS need to be made by next year 0:37
@3:05 that's the Skull Minecart from Diddy's Kong Quest
