    Can't believe I just saw this!
    Anyway, sounds like you had a mild case of hyponatremia (you drank too much water). You feel bloated, sluggish, flulike, headache, etc. This is actually really common in endurance athletes when they step up to longer distances than they are used to. You think, "hydrate!" and you do. Too much. The problem is, you are a human, not a camel. You can't "pre-hydrate", you have no capacity to store surplus water in your body. The effect is, your blood sodium concentration becomes too low. Even if you drink water with electrolytes, salts, etc. it won't help. In fact, there is research showing that electrolyte/salt water is worse than regular water fro two reasons; it leads to lower sodium concentrations in blood and the salt makes you want to drink more which can exacerbate the problem.
    Drink like a normal person, drink ad libitum (to thirst) and you will be fine (well, it's still 20 miles so not "fine" but, you know).
    Cool video, great effort!

    • @umaikakudo
      @umaikakudo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      He also mentioned pre-hydrating with coconut water. Coconut water is dangerous for endurance activities as it's electrolyte composition is opposite of what the body needs (too much potassium, not enough sodium) which can lead to hyponatremia (when used during hot endurance activities lasting great than 90 minutes ) which can be deadly.
      For full details see blog.skratchlabs.com/blog/coconut-water-the-bizarro-sports-drink

      I learned this the hard way on the first marathon I ran. The idea was to "pre-hydrate." Horrible idea. I actually didn't do too badly considering, but I felt a lot like The Vegan Cyclist explained. And even worse, I literally had to stop at nearly every porta-potty to pee. It killed my time completely. I ended up at like 3 hours 43 minutes or something like that. But without the bathroom stops, I'll bet I would have shaved 15 minutes off that time. And if I hadn't felt so "powerless" and bloated, another 15 minutes could have been shaved off. I had trained pretty hard for this run and had done pretty well with the times on my "mock marathons." But, I didn't do anything out of the ordinary as far as drinking water, gel, etc. Why I decided I needed to "load up" for the marathon, I have no idea. Stupid of me.
      That was the first and last time that happened. Live and learn.

      @thiagoleitenicoluci854 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@christocr I raced Leadille 100 MTB a few years ago and I hydrated too much during the race (fear of previous year cramps). After 2nd stop to pee I decided to do it on the fly. If the pros do it, why can't I? No spared minutes to share when you are digging deeper and aiming for you PR. :-)
      Sold the bib after the race (joking!)

    • @mar_man813
      @mar_man813 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Definitely possible. Also sounds like he had a bit of adynamic ileus/gastroparesis, which can also be caused by electrolyte imbalances. This will further worsen the hydration problem, as only 10-20% of water is absorbed before the large intestine.

    Tyler, you have a great storytelling ability and a natural earnestness, honesty, and vulnerability. You're so much fun to watch. Keep doing epic stuff and letting us know about it. The amount i can relate to this is insane. Two weeks ago i did the "Vätternrundan" in Sweden which is 300 kilometers. At the start I was super motivated, i felt good and happy, so i was like OK I'm gonna stay with the fast guys, i wanna be among the fastest of the amateurs. And i was.. For the first hundred kilometers.. We were averaging around 40 km/h and just flying by everyone. Then after half the race we stopped at one of the checkpoint to fill up on supplies and I was just about to hop on the bike and i just got up EVERYTHING. I was puking for about 5 minutes and then had to lay down for 10. Eventually against everyones advice and common sense i jumped on the bike again and was just crawling at not even half the speed I was averaging before shit went down, and now the longest 150 kilometers of my life began. The toughest mental battle i ever had BUT i just kept pedaling, and eventually i reached the goal.

    Ive had a bike 112 mile bike race around Oahu, where I had 6 flat tires, and the mech 4 van was telling me to just bag it in and call it a day...but I did'nt; I had too much respect for the racers, the volunteers, the training hours I had put in to just get to the start line. so I was not gonna quit. I keep coming back to your videos because of the honesty factor. that is real life. props for toughing it out for that 150miles to the finish. VC the real deal! 100!

    Tyler I have to say this must be the funniest video that you’ve done. Just the way you take the piss out of yourself was really honest but priceless. I’m really impressed that you manage to finish feeling the way you did I know I wouldn’t have so kudos to you. We are drinking just water in your bottles? I find when I drink only water I get that “full” feeling where the water just sits in your gut and you can’t drink anymore. Hydration tablets like SIS for example really help me a lot and I can drink almost as much as I want for hours. Worth trying if you haven’t already.
    The other thing....Stop putting so much pressure in yourself!!!! Is it because you feel like you have to perform because your TH-cam fans expect you to? Because for me at least, I don’t expect you to! I don’t think anyone watching has such expectations. We watch you channel because of your character and great content. It’s no BS/egotistical crap and it’s informative and entertaining. We don’t expect you to be in the winning break for every race or smashing it up with pro riders for 200miles!! So relax and stop expecting so much from yourself at eeeevery race!! If you have a good day make the most of it. If you have a bad day then it’s a bad day...happens to all of us.
    Keep it up bro! Love the channel!

    This has to be one of the best videos you have ever created. You laid yourself bare for everyone to experience this along with you. You are humble and true to yourself. I sat here getting choked up watching you suffer when your body has turned it off and your mind is the only dominant force controlling everything. I was in a similar dark spot last month trying to qualify for the Gran Fondo World championships ( which I do not LOL! ) on mile 92 and had nothing left except my mind forcing me to turn the cranks one revolution at a time. It's a special club for those that have been in that same dark place. Thank you for sharing this.

    Great story and kudos for finishing! This will have a profound impact on people you'll probably never meet, and in ways that make no sense. 20 years ago I experienced the exact same feeling being bloated, bonking, and felt like water was right in the back of my throat. It was a combination of hyponatremia and stomach virus. I was 90 miles into 99' Hawaii Ironman with my entire family there who made the trip to cheer me on. Death march/shuffle marathon followed, but made it to the end. Had hallucinations of wild pigs coming out of the lava fields at me. I felt like turd taco for miles and miles...Making it to the finish and under the midnight cutoff, even though my "race" was completely out the window, changed me forever. Its a special thing to make it through something like that. Awesome story! Thanks for sharing...

    I've been to that place you visited during this race. So much of this resonated. I am not vegan.
    Bonked hard after maybe 150km (just under 100miles). This was after jamming myself with nutrients, carbs, sugar, water etc.
    Had no appetite past the first "omg I need food" moment. Same feeling: nothing is being absorbed. I was weak as a kitten and miserable, and I had ~100km to go. This was all solo.
    The rest of that ride I was in a state of pain and delirium...if I had a camera, I doubt I could have talked to it and made any sense. I just kept pedaling.
    I have never been so happy to get home in my life. I probably would have wept if I had only had the strength.
    So you did just fine dude. A great video...and as far as I'm concerned you managed to experience and power through something pretty special that day. You made yourself a better rider.

Most of your viewers have, one way or another, experienced that same feeling of satisfaction and utter failure...all in the same event. Greater accomplishment than if everything went perfect. Overcoming mental and physical issues and finishing this event gets you to another level! Just finished solo HT550 (Scotland Highland trail) where I broke a rib after 500km, managed to push the bike 8hours straight with full on pain to get out of the mountain trail and walking 0.5 to 2 km an hour for 8 hours straight pushing a fully loaded bikepack rig to get out of the mountains and on to a road, suffered the pain for 2 days (like stabbing pain that would come when standing or lying down but never while hand on the bars!) and continued another 450km staying off road. What kept me going was the most beautiful scenery ever and mental resilience (also Tylenol and ibuprofen). Ride on! Great vids!

    You bonked, and I know it's the worst feeling when you get passed all day and can't hold a wheel and nothing makes sense. Preparation - staying relaxed, getting a good night's sleep all help and of course mental pressure doesn't help. Keep setting those goals though and get there earlier next year.

      How is that possible at 50 miles while prepared and experienced? When I was inexperienced I did 60 miles with just a can of soda, no bonking.

    That was a really good story. Sometimes the darkest times are the ones we learn the most from. It is never about winning anyway. The journey is what makes this sport so great. I can barely stay in a saddle for 20 miles let alone 200. That is something. Be thankful for the things you do have.

    So, I’m into the 3rd week of social distancing, with the covid global pandemic going full blast. Like most people, I’m work furloughed, doubt if my job will ever return and worry about keeping my family fed, clothed and sheltered. Best estimates are that things won’t return to normal (whatever that is) for a couple more months. In my longing for something inspirational, I remembered this great video of yours. Dude, this is a GREAT piece of work, in fact, I would consider it your magnus opus! Tyler and Taylor, your message is so appropriate right now...all you can do is keep pedaling the bike. It doesn’t matter that you’re not off the front like the pros, that you look really dorky, or that you might even finish dead last. Just pedal and try to keep smiling. Thanks Tyler. Best wishes to you and your family as well as all your subscribers. 💕

      It's scary times my friend. Even when things do return to normal, its gonna be a long time before we all adjust to the new nnormal. It really means a lot to me that in this crazy time, these videos can offer up a little distraction. Thank you for the kind message and things will get better eventually, ride on bro!

    Unbelievable how much gravel attention from bike manufacturers compared to road, etc.
    Great video! Better than the EF slick video.

      rpdole I’ve noticed that a lot of people love road, but they do not want to deal with the danger of traffic. Gravel allows people to do this without the need to go straight up mountain bike

      @@GMoneyLove I disagree. The EF vid was a kind of a romancing of the event. VC's vid was a bit more down to earth. Then again, I'm a fan. No hate here. Loved some of the production values of the EF vid, and I'm a fan of EF as well.

    Take a page out of triathlon booklet, and take some salt tablets while on the bike. You won't be able to retain anything if you have hyponatremia (low salt levels)
