What was bike gearing 2018 vs 2024? Curious if you had easier gearing this time around…. sometimes I feel like I end up doing climbs slower with more recent easier gearing - or it’s that I’m getting older- nah!
Hhm i guess 6 years Younger with the Same extra muscles you might be even closer to your PR... Don't neglect the fact that aging takes a toll in your early to mid fourties... I speak from experience!🙈
Thanks for being an inspiration to us big, skinny guys that cycle. I’ve gotten to a point where I don’t care to stay lean anymore and want to be strong and happy
if you are training for ultra distance you can ride infinite km but if you are training for short races you will be dead at the end but faster overall.
Been following you for like 9 years or maybe 8 but I honestly think this is your best race. To come so close to 9 hours at your weight in the heat?? Yeah. A machine
love that jersey bib color way! The power and time stats helps put everything in perspective. At 290lbs everyone drops me on climbs. Amazing how only 30lbs affected your ride. Great video.
Agreed I'm 270 lbs and in my way down to 170 lbs. I'm always the slowest at climbs and when I'm not I get amazed lol I get people left behind. Hopefully when we reach our goal weight we'll fly.
Bro, we don't get any younger and better. But: we don't give up. Live ist still good. All the best on your next adventure from boarder to boarder. Blessings for your family ❤
Dude you are such a beast. Great balance you found between being a great rider, adventurer, family man, beast, and TH-camr. Appreciate your honesty and sharing.
I agree, happier and more energy. I think it was diet. I changed mine gained more weight and got faster but also smarter in time. As things normally work that way with consistency
Shout out to all of us running around with pretty likely more weight than you are now...I was 230#, now down to just under 200#. FTP slightly up, 300->315, nothing special, but climbing and riding in general is so much easier. I could drop some more, but that'd be at the expense of muscle mass. My biggest complaint for being big is needing 150-175g of carbs/hr...Glad some content is back.
Honestly dude you looked great in 2018 and 2024. What matters is you are happy in your mind and you have different goals right now. Personally I don’t think you look “healthier” because you are carrying more muscle mass but if that’s what is making you happy then all power to you.
Just wanted to thank you for being an inspiration for getting back into bikes this year and seeing how serious I can take it. Still very much beginner, just stepped up my paved route to 11mi with a punchy 170m climb in the middle and cut 9 minutes off it this week.
I haven't done CTK since the early '90s but seems to me the recent fires have decimated the forest canopy from top of Tollhouse well into the Big Creek climb. You guys are exposed to direct sunlight way more now than back in the day, and maybe more than 2018 so that alone could explain some performance decrease. Bottom line though you killed it. Hats off. My best time was 10:42 back in 1992. I remember some dudes from Texas trash talking in the group on the flat rollout from Clovis to Wildcat about the lack of climbing they had been told to expect. They got quiet on Tollhouse and I never saw any of them at the finish.
Awesome video Tyler! Looking strong and feeling strong. And keep on setting awesome examples for your son to emulate. I am sure he sees your great efforts out there and will emulate your hard work and determination in life! And great to share lighthearted moments with family and share with them that just being human and being humble is ok!
with this video, we can see how much faster WVA would ride climbs if he lost 20 pounds! No wonder now why the trade teams get their stage racing stars like Rogic, Pogacar, etc to get super thin!
@@joebriggs8422 the winner is a rower first, mountain bike racer second. Road bike is just for fun. His goal was to just finish but once he told us he raced weekly 2-5 hour mtn bike races we were guessing a top 20 finish.

Great video and yeah, you are stronger and faster wiser. That’s for sure a few tweaks here and there I’m sure you can break your old record no problem.
Yea maybe Tyler can tweak his bike with lighter parts to reduce overall system weight by 20 pounds to match the 2018 total weight... but only if he rode a steel dept store bike in 2018. j/k

So much of a long term strategy to have the muscle. I hear of so many broken bones when these skinny guys crash. Yes they can climb but at what cost? Great video. Shows the difference weight makes up hills. You are fitter now with watts sustained but the low weight back then made you faster on this course. I personally think you looked better back then as a cyclist. Lower weight looks cooler and freer. I lost a bit of weight lately, pretty trim on wholefoods vegan low fat diet. Suddenly getting my fastest times and getting up hills great.
I'm a huge fan, you've done so much for the sport, and you're very entertaining as well! As a father myself though, whose own father was not interested in exposing me to sports or musical instruments, or anything, or spending weekends teaching me things,, my observation here is that there is a time and place for everything. If you want to be a hardcore amateur racer before you have kids, or after they are in they are launched as young adults, great. However, right now you should be spending all your time on your young kids' interests, exposing them to new things and guiding them into adulthood. Then race again once they are in college. You can have it all in life, just not at the same time. Maybe you are spending tons of time with your kids, but I don't see how, with all this training an epic adventure races. They just look bored as you drag them to races. When I was 40 and my dad was 70, we didn't have much to talk about, because he didn't put in the time to nurture the relationship. I was not going to make that mistake with my kids. Just my opinion.
