Václav Válek is a Czech name, not Russian ... :D We were once occupied by Russian Orcs and behind the iron curtain in the cold war era but fortunately not any more and hopefully never again. But I don't blame you man, when I briefly lived in California tons of people thought everything right to Germany on the map was Russia :D Most czechs speak english quite well. I think he understood what you were saying, he was just zoned out and did not understandwhat kind of cool youtube celebrity bro is talking to him... :D

What was bike gearing 2018 vs 2024? Curious if you had easier gearing this time around…. sometimes I feel like I end up doing climbs slower with more recent easier gearing - or it’s that I’m getting older- nah!

Shout out to all of us running around with pretty likely more weight than you are now...I was 230#, now down to just under 200#. FTP slightly up, 300->315, nothing special, but climbing and riding in general is so much easier. I could drop some more, but that'd be at the expense of muscle mass. My biggest complaint for being big is needing 150-175g of carbs/hr...Glad some content is back.

I haven't done CTK since the early '90s but seems to me the recent fires have decimated the forest canopy from top of Tollhouse well into the Big Creek climb. You guys are exposed to direct sunlight way more now than back in the day, and maybe more than 2018 so that alone could explain some performance decrease. Bottom line though you killed it. Hats off. My best time was 10:42 back in 1992. I remember some dudes from Texas trash talking in the group on the flat rollout from Clovis to Wildcat about the lack of climbing they had been told to expect. They got quiet on Tollhouse and I never saw any of them at the finish.

I can see I'm objectively getting stronger though through the months I've been here which is motivating. I've set an arbitrary goal of 180 lbs, as I recall during 50k training years ago being mid 180s and feeling fantastic. @@femimacaulay4547 I train Zone 2 due to a recent heart scare. And I eat super clean. Weigh all my food and track my daily calorie intake on an app. It tells me how much to eat to lose a specific amount by a specific date. It also links to my STRAVA and takes in my calories burned. However when I train I still only eat what I would be allowed on a non training day. 1975 calories per day.

So much of a long term strategy to have the muscle. I hear of so many broken bones when these skinny guys crash. Yes they can climb but at what cost?
I’m a mountain biker and my concern with light weight an injury with the inevitable crash. Broken bones and ligaments have long recoveries. The last 8 years my lifting was to maintain not to gain and I let strength drop. This experiment ended with a crash and a broken leg, I feel my control of my bike at the limit caused me to lose it and have the more severe crash. These days it’s about enjoying the experience being competitive and living for another battle.
Love the channel, verbalizing the conversation we all have in our minds as we cyclists mature!!

Damn Bro, monster ride!! It would be interesting to know what you prefer but I think I would prefer being a little heavier and more durable versus the opposite. I know my best performances are when I have everything dialed in - strength and weight. But I'm not racing against others. Just myself😄. You're still a beast either way. Great ride!!!

Great video. Shows the difference weight makes up hills. You are fitter now with watts sustained but the low weight back then made you faster on this course. I personally think you looked better back then as a cyclist. Lower weight looks cooler and freer. I lost a bit of weight lately, pretty trim on wholefoods vegan low fat diet. Suddenly getting my fastest times and getting up hills great.

I'm a huge fan, you've done so much for the sport, and you're very entertaining as well! As a father myself though, whose own father was not interested in exposing me to sports or musical instruments, or anything, or spending weekends teaching me things,, my observation here is that there is a time and place for everything. If you want to be a hardcore amateur racer before you have kids, or after they are in they are launched as young adults, great. However, right now you should be spending all your time on your young kids' interests, exposing them to new things and guiding them into adulthood. Then race again once they are in college. You can have it all in life, just not at the same time. Maybe you are spending tons of time with your kids, but I don't see how, with all this training an epic adventure races. They just look bored as you drag them to races. When I was 40 and my dad was 70, we didn't have much to talk about, because he didn't put in the time to nurture the relationship. I was not going to make that mistake with my kids. Just my opinion.
