What is USB C? USB Type C and Thunderbolt 3 explained StarTech.com

  • There’s been quite a lot of buzz around USB-C, the new industry standard connector, and for many people, there’s an equal amount of confusion. The first question most people ask is - what exactly is USB-C?
    ………...
    What is USB-C?
USB-C, also known as USB Type-C, is a new, sleek connector tailored to fit mobile devices as well as smaller Laptops and Tablets. Unlike the USB type A connector that most people are familiar with, USB-C is a unique new version of the USB connector. It is more compact and conveniently features a reversible plug and connector orientation.
It offers an array of performance benefits beyond what users may be used to with traditional USB functionality. USB-C supports up to 10Gbps data transfer speeds and scalable power delivery. It also supports USB-C Alternate Modes, which enable a USB-C cable to carry DisplayPort and Thunderbolt 3. Although the USB-C connector is very different than previous connectors, it’s backwards compatible with USB 3.0 and 2.0 peripherals using the appropriate port adaptors
    ………….
    What is Thunderbolt 3?
While USB-C is getting a lot of attention, so too is Thunderbolt 3, the latest version of Thunderbolt technology. Thunderbolt 3 can potentially transfer data at speeds of up to 40Gbps. Thunderbolt 3 can simultaneously support the fastest data connections and the most video bandwidth of any single cable, while powering compatible devices.
The big news however, is the fact that Thunderbolt 3 has adopted the USB-C connector shape. Previously, the Thunderbolt interface used mini DisplayPort-shaped connectors that weren’t compatible with USB ports.
    ………….
    What’s the difference between them?
With USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 being talked about almost interchangeably, it’s important we further clarify the differences between them.
USB-C is simply a new physical connection shape, not a new USB standard. Thunderbolt 3 is the latest version of the Thunderbolt technology standard. It is a superset solution which piggybacks on the benefits of the new USB-C connector’s capabilities and shape making it the USB-C that does it all.
OK, so why is all of this important? What’s all the hype about?
    Allows users to do more
As device designs get smaller and lighter, a USB-C connector is needed to better suit compact form factors. It empowers both desk-bound and mobile users to connect to essential devices easily.
Whereas, each technology protocol required its own connector. USB-C delivers multiple protocols and supports these technologies through one connector.
    ……………
    Connectivity challenges for users
The USB-C connector will soon be common in the next generation of computers, peripherals, and mobile devices, creating challenges for IT professionals and end users when they connect these new devices to existing legacy environments. Users need to be equipped and educated about the appropriate adapters, docking stations, and other connectivity accessories to take full advantage of the benefits
    of USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C.

I'm researching audio interfaces for the 2019 iMac 5K 27" i9 I just acquired for producing music. Of course the older interfaces I own won't work without MacGyvering a series of adapters together that will overheat and fry in an instant. I'm so glad I came upon this video. Don't give a flip about the graphics or music. Bottom line is that it's the best explanation of USB Type C and Thunderbolt 3 I've come across. It's succinct! Now I think I understand what I'm looking for. Thanks, StarTech!

In regards to the MSI Z170 Krait 3 Gaming MOBO... it has a single USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C. Does that port have Thunderbolt 3 capability?
The MSI Z170 Krait 3 also mentions a (1x TBT connector)... is that short for Thunderbolt? And if so, is it Thunderbolt 1, 2, or 3?

      Hello Joshua,
Unfortunately, we do not have any C7 (figure 8) to USB-C power cables and this may be something that is very difficult to find as C7 power cables are built to handle 100-240V power signals and USB-C is built to support a maximum of 20V power.

My question is simple. Can I get an adaptor for my SUPERFAST Thunderbolt ports that will allow me to run an external hard drive that has a USB plug? I have searched through all the hype and basically, up to now the only application I see for the Thunderbolt ports is for linking extra monitors. As the boast is about their speed I would like to connect my external HD via a connector, if such a thing exists?

    • @startech
      @startech  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi, Mike! Thanks for your questions. If you wish to use a USB based storage device on a Thunderbolt 3 port then you will need a USB-C terminated cable for your USB enclosure such as our USB31CUB1M or USB2CB1M, a USB-C to USB-A converter like the USB31CAADG, or a USB-C hub product like the HB30C3A1CFS.
Other options include using a product like our Thunderbolt 3 docking station TB3DK2DPW to add additional USB ports to your Thunderbolt 3 enabled system. If you have an older Thunderbolt 2 or 1 interface, the TB2USB3ES is an excellent option for enabling USB access.
As for performance, unfortunately, unless the USB storage device is Thunderbolt based it will not be able to benefit from the Thunderbolt connection and will only operate at the original products specified performance, such as USB 3.0 5Gbps.
Let us know if you have any other questions and you can always contact our Support team as well: www.startech.com/Support

Some of the info is either incorrect or outdated. Not all USB Cs are reversible.
Some have an up/down side (my inductive charging plate and one of my surge protectors). I put dots of paint on the 'up' side.
Some Cs can be inserted either way BUT one side has a certain function and the other side has another function (just saw the cables on Amazon).

    • @zoltanmagyar7177
      @zoltanmagyar7177 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

The video is not very accurate concerning this.
USB Type-C is the connector. Basically it's shape. The old standard USB connectors were actually called USB Type-A (but everyone referred to them as just "USB"). USB Type-B had the same pins but in a different formation. It was mostly used on printers (That's where I saw them mostly.).
There are also the Mini-A, Mini-B, Micro-A, Micro-B connectors. Micro-B is used on almost all Android phones.
It actually gets confusing with USB 3.0. A new standard. USB 3.0 connectors (Type-As and Micro-Bs too) were different in actual design, but they were physically backward compatible so you could plug a USB 2.0 Type-A to a USB 3.0 Type-A. 3.0 connectors had more pins, but well hidden.
The current standard that the 3.0 connectors can use is USB3.1 Gen1. That's 5Gbit/s.
With the USB Type-C "came" a new standard too, USB 3.1 Gen2, which bumped up speeds to 10Gbit/s. Old 3.0 Type-A connectors are not supporting this standard.
Thunderbolt 3 is much faster, it shows how much more can be achieved with this physical design, but there's also a huge drawback.
For 40Gbit/s, you need an active USB cable. That basically means the cable itself has a small electronic component that is used to amplify the signal. There is also a maximum length that TB3 can be used, which is quite short.
Also worth noting that Thunderbolt is a completely different standard, it's used for different things that USB. It was also developed by different people. Speed is just a small aspect of these standards.
tldr: Type-C is a connector that is using USB 3.1 Gen2 as the USB standard, which is 10Gbit/s, but with an active cable it can achieve Thunderbolt 3 speeds.
