How is it difficult to understand when they are standing at the bike they're talking about or pointing to the other bike. They also said Marin/Ripley over 20 times. You need to get off struggle street.
Yeah I noticed that would be an issue during the start of the video and tried to guide the guys into saying the model name, then attempted to use the correct b roll over the "this" and "that" to make it somewhat intelligible. It's an interesting thing because it brings up the question of how a viewer best digests the video- from the audio, or the visual? My general hunch is that audio is 80% of a video, and I put far more work into the sounds than the visuals as a result. Thanks for the note!
@@JeffKendallWeed If it wasn't a bunch of sick riding and smiles, I probably would have turned it off because I didn't know what bike you guys were talking about.
I had a 2022 Marin Alpine Trail XR for the steep days (swapped to a Forbidden Dreadnought), and a Ripley AF for the cross country stuff we have around here in the north east. I have two friends that have just one bike, and that's the Rift Zone XR. This video was pretty bang on comparing the two models and I can confirm, you will have a party on either bike. I'll add my 2 cents that the rift zones active suspension climbs tricky tech sections a little better than the ripley's more efficient all day pedal platform. Thanks Jeff and the boys for another awesome video.
Nice to see a budget shootout. I honestly wasn't expecting the Marin to perform as well as it did. Not sure if I was operating under a personal bias of some kind but it was nice to see these two bikes go head to head. BTW Is anyone else getting a freeze at about 18:41 ?
You’re all awesome! I keep coming back for the way you guys pop off everything and find unique lines (I’m working on riding more playful like that). I mentioned Riley because he was awesome at taking heat for being the “more advanced/intermediate” rider of the group, which I can relate too.

Hello Jeff. If possible I would like to see you do a review on the new 2024 Marin Alpine trail. I genuinely think you would love the bike. Love your content and keep up the great work work.
I actually preferred this type of bike comparison compared to other chanels! Certainly because both the riders makes me feel more involved than seeing a pro rider with the perfect technique nail it
Hip padding doesn't get talked about as much for mountain biking. I started wearing some after a guy in our riding group broke his hip and they've saved my hips during quite a few of my crashes. So yeah, I'm a huge proponent too.
Marin just makes great bikes for people on a budget. I have the Rift Zone 2(saved up almost two years for) love it great bike. Before that I was on a bobcat trail 4 that I upgraded the fork and added dropper post.
Fun video! Im a total novice but have the Ripley AF and really enjoy it. They do seem to run smaller than some brands. Medium i think is recommended for something like 5'3-5'8 so wondering if any of the guys were just on the wrong size bike for them.
Thanks for asking! I haven't had a ton of requests for those, but will consider it! From what I recall, the latest GT models were a bit more glued to the ground- I tend to prefer more nimble bikes. I've been thinking a Norco Sight would be a good next bike to buy.
Try Biloxi Bicycles for the Marin. Only place I found one. They sent it in the ‘small’ box so ‘More than Some’ assembly required, but $200 under the Big Box price.
I have a RZ Carbon 1. Lots of carbon upgrades and lighter components over the last 2ish years, and it's still about 31.5 lbs. Marin's are heavy, but they don't ride heavy. I live in coastal Carolina, where all the trails are essentially single track XC. I've purchased 2 different XC bikes (when in Rome) and sold both because the RZ holds speed and momentum better, climbs like a champ, is more comfortable, and has more travel. Despite being 5-6 pounds heavier than most XC bikes, for myself, it's faster, and I can still take it to the mountains with confidence. I would love for Marin to fully commit to the Carbon model and make the rear triangle carbon, but all things considered, it's the best bike I've owned.
This is conpletely off topic, but has something changed about Das Auto in the last year? Rode it again a few weeks ago after a while away from Galbraith and it seemed way better.
Jeff, if I’m cheap AF and would like to upgrade from my current Commencall hardtail to either a Ripley AF or a Ripmo AF, which do you think would be a better choice if my local trails are mostly SoCal blues and greens? I’m thinking Ripley. Thoughts? Thanks for your time.
Jeff - any thoughts on the direct-to-consumer brands (Commencal, YT, Canyon)? They have several options close to the Marin's price point. IMO a modern geo $2-$3k trail bike is perfect for 90% of weekend warriors - if we're truly honest about skill level and speed 😂
Im trying to work on my cornering and ive noticed that your way of cornering is very unique compared to other riders, ive watched your cornering video but it left me wondering if you ever have any problems with front grip with your cornering style?
the best budget bikes nowadays is a good used upgraded covid bike. there is soooo many excellent bikes in the market going from $2500-$3000 (yeti, santa cruz, trek, specialized, you name it), used bike market is great for buyers right now. 🤙🤙👍👍
I don't mind the Z2 at all. I'm only 175lbs though. I found the terrible stock brakes and tires to be nearly unrideable, so I would certainly swap those before messing with the suspension.
Jeff, if you had to choose either the Ripley AF or Ripmo AF as your only mountain bike, which one would you choose? Which one would be best at riding everything from PNW gnar, flow, high alpine, and desert? Thank you for the great content!
I usually prefer the Ripmo. However, the Ripley is quite a bit more torsionally stiff. As long as there is good elevation to be had, I tend to have most fun on the Ritmo.
Absolutely not! I was trying to set up the Canyon Spectral on the beach for a quick review stand up, and Logan grabbed that of some random surfer guy on the water.
Hi, I need help. I just bought a Giant Trance Advanced Pro 2. 2 months ago and I cant figure out the suspension it just feels harsh and bumpy. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Encoding error while exporting the file from my editing software. I have a super nice M2 Max chip computer, but it still struggles a bit with the 4k60FPS footage.
Also, the vibe of this video is great even if the bikes are not something I'm interested in. bringing these guys along made the video really entertaining and fun to watch, them conversing with each other is hilarious.
Thanks for the nice note, Dave! I used the same camera as always, but exported in 60 FPS, which gives it that crisper look. I filmed the majority of the vid myself, and I'm not very good with the camera, so I used the 60 FPS trick to make up for my poor angles and shakey footage!
Now, I don't want every JKW to have this style of video but I liked the conversational feel and the less-than-perfect framing / focus. It must have taken some time to edit a lot of footage into something that felt well put together but still casual? I'm not sure I'm describing it very well. Unrelated, but it's strange Endura doesn't have a woman-friendly cut for the protector undershort. Sizing guide is lame.
@@JeffKendallWeed Ha! Let's get technical: bike is short for bicycle. A mountain bike is a specific type of bicycle, but it's still a bicycle. And $3,000 is still a lot of money for one...for a lot of people, who may never even approach the limits of that caliber of a bike.
A $3,000 mountain bike is good for at least 5 years of riding. $600 a year to ride with friends, new friends and many, many adventures in places you normally wouldn’t go. Or in other words $50 a month. What does a gym membership cost these days? No one said you have to buy a $3,000 mtb, there are cheaper options like the Marin where you can use the saving for upkeep…
For sure, but for a quality full suspension mountain bike the 2500-3000 is a good pricepoint. Jeff even said in the beginning if you needed something cheaper to go used full suspension or hardtail. I'm on team hardtail for cheaper but quality component mountain bikes.
