In this video, I take on the ultimate challenge of riding every Ibis mountain bike in their lineup. From the lightweight DV9 to the powerful Oso e-bike, I explore the unique characteristics that make each bike special. Discover which Ibis MTB is perfect for your riding style.
Ibis just completely redesigned the Ripley and Ripmo, they now share a frame with the Ripley being 130/140 travel and the Ripmo being 150/160. They also adjusted the Ripmo's kinematics to make it a little more playful and a little less enduro-y since the HD6 now covers enduro race duty. But yeah enduro bikes are a hell of a drug haha, the sheer speed and confidence they have downhill can really get you into trouble haha. In the PDX area, the HD6 would be at home on stuff like Follow the Leader and Johnny Royale over at Sandy Ridge, Thrillium over at Yacolt, Fear and Loaming over at Tillamook, and the rowdiest trails at Post Canyon. I rode a Ripmo AF for 3 years before moving onto a Rocky Mountain Altitude, it's the swiss army knife of bikes.
I chose the Exie because it’s one of the most playful bikes in the category. (With the Pivot as a close second). It’s a wonderful race bike. It’s an even better endurance bike. Super capable for its platform. Basically a rocket ship. And still one of the lightest frames. Puts a smile on my face every time.
I love your take on subjects. Thank you for a sensible perspective of e-bikes. I still love riding- I was racing motocross 50+ years ago. I have been mountain biking for 40 years. Downhill/lines/technical sections I am still good. Before I went e-bike I would come home and have to go to bed. Now, I can still do 5000’ ascent, 40mile XC ride and feel great when I am done.
I have a Ripley AF with a fox 36 140mm travel, carbon bars and wheels, 2.5 tacky Chan front wheel and I love it is very capable bike more than you will think, nevertheless I will love to own a carbon ripmo frame
I own a carbon ripley V4, a ripmo af, and a carbon hardtail similar to the DV9-most people need a ripley, the dv9 is a fantastic first mountain bike, or smooth xc race bike, and the ripmo is for people who want a smooth ride over super rough stuff. personally ride my ripley 85% vs the ripmo’s 15%
my favorite is the ripley, I think the V4S is the single greatest all-round mountain bike ever🤘
Same
I also ride a v4 Ripley and it's as much bike as I'll ever need, especially since I don't really care for downhill as much as I do cross country.
I'm fortunate to have the Ripmo V2, it does it all and the Vietnam version of the EXIE for longer more mellow winter rides.. Love them both!
My vote is for DV9 cause it's what I ride on...
Love my DV9
LOL I must say you have terrific bike selection skills ;)
Families that shred together stay together!!
Dustin, I think you would enjoy switching the bird call from a red tailed hawk shriek you are using to the bald eagle's seagull like squawk for the SRAM Eagle. It's ironically subversive compared to your current use.
Personally, I would pick the DV9 because I prefer the simplicity of a good hardtail. I currently ride a 27.5+ hardtail with a 120mm fork and it's all the bike I need. I don't ride bike park or flow trails with berms and jumps, because I don't bounce like I use to when I make a mistake. I do love good techy singletrack and black diamond, hand built stuff, but I am a wheels on the ground kinda guy who occasionally does smaller drops.
I like your style! I ride a 27.5+ hardtail as well and I’ve never felt like I needed anything more. I ride mainly blues and black diamonds.
Ripley V4 owner here. I agree it's the do it all bike, is light and climbs awesome. I still have a CC bike for racing, but when things get a bit more chunky it's Ripley time.
let me ask you, I heard the V5 is heavier and marginally different. Are all the previouis models virtually unchanged V1-V4? or did they make a significant difference also previous to V5?
@@31acruz I wish I could confirm! I am only familiar with the V4! Highly recommended tho!
Excellent video!
I own a Ripley AF with carbon wheels and carbon handlebars! Really nimble , playful fun!
Also I have the Oso ! I think these two bikes are great! Best of both worlds!
I have a Mojo that I bought in 2006 custom for $6374, I gave to my next door neighbor kid. Needing a little assist at 70 I would go with the OSO. It was the first Ibis that Nikols put out when he bought Ibis back.
All of this is respect. The Oso is super fun, have you had a chance to try it?
I sat on it in the store. Have not rode it. I have a 2019 and 2022 SW Levo. I just invested in Push’s eleven six shocks and a push nine one fork. The are incredible suspension made for me and the Levo. Made in Colorado.
I've owned a Ripmo AF and a Ripmo V2. Both incredible bikes. I do want an Exie or Ripley for longgggg rides. Also this video is slightly outdated. Ibis just released the new Ripley and Ripmo with new geo and suspension
I ride a ripley AF. handles washington chunk or jumps. not so much travel its a bear to bunny hop or jib. also a smidge slacker than the carbon Ripley. Its like the Toyota Tacoma of bikes: not the biggest or fastest but reliably takes every bit of abuse you can handle. great video and great choice of bike :)
Yeah I think the only place a Ripley will be undergunned in the PDX area would be the Sandy Ridge double blacks, Thrillium, some of the optional lines on Fear and Loaming and the super rowdy stuff at Post Canyon. I took a Ripmo down Thrillium and even that felt undergunned on that trail.
This video was great as someone just starting to dabble in mtb, it’s nice to see how they all play out
If I ever get well (and keep my job) there’s an HD6 in my future. I need a gravity oriented bike in my life.
Sending to good energy to help make this happen! 😉
Aww yessss. I'm in the office, got stuff done and now time for some EBD!
NORCO brother Sight, Optic or Fluid 🎉
Bought the Ripley AF last year. Dream bike for me. Perfect for the southern Missouri Ozarks.
Great choice
Love my Ripley AF, great bike, all the bike I will ever need.
Proper Choice!!!!
I test rode a Ripley in Oakridge, OR. It was a blast ripping down some old school single-track. Light and nimble, but I never thought I was under-biked!
Timely video. I’ve been eyeing the Exie and your description describes what I’m looking for to a T, so it would like I’m on the right track!
Dude, you missed the memo. The Ripley is now a 130/140 travel bike with long slacker geo. The Ripmo is now a 150/160 travel bike with longer slacker geo. In fact, both bikes now share the same frame.
Fun video. I’d love to see the same comparison between the Pivot bikes.
That would be very cool!
Yay, I win, lol. Ripley AF checking in. It's such a great bike for general MTB riding.
The OSO would be my go to, what’s not to like about more laps and a planted feel.
and going up uphill both ways ;)
Love my DV9!
Thanks for this video Dustin! I also ended up with a USA Exie this season - some days it feels like a sweet spot whip, other days (and trails) it feels totally underpowered. My use case is still... Never drive, but ride up to the trails in Tilden or Wildcat in Berkeley, so every ride is 8 miles road plus whatever trail included. Would you still pick the Ripley under those conditions?
JAKE!! Good to see you here!
IF I had was you and exclusively road to the ride would pick the EXIE because of all the added road miles. One thing that might be interesting and would definitely help with the transport stages is adding some smaller tires to it. This, of course would make the trails a little harder to deal with, but that bike is capable of doing a lot. It's always about finding the happy medium dialing in perfectly for the type of writing that you do.
Hope this helps!
Recently had a chance to ride the rimpo, and boy what a game changer.
Yup, the swiss army knife of bikes. There's nothing the Ripmo can't do. You'll think it's the ultimate bike for descending until you try an enduro bike, but the Ripmo is a better all around trail bike than any enduro bike.
What sounds better: Exie-Ripley-Ripmo-HD6-Oso or Exie-Ripley-Ripmo-Mojo-Oso
pretty obvious choice
Small thing, but the sound effect you used when you said eagle you actually used a red tailed hawk call. The bald eagle sounds like a seagull, oddly enough.
Hey Dustin, what is it you love so much about the UDH Sram GX Deraileur?
I love that it is essentially idiot proof making it very difficult for someone like me to break when the bike falls over it also shifts terrifically underload.
@@EverythingsBeenDone Thanks D. I love the content and looking forward to the next episode!
Can you do all the Pivot bikes?
HD6 all day ..... although that head tube is kinda stubby.......
Was this filmed... Right before the redesign on the Ripleys/Ripmos? Unfortunate. Hope to see those going forward.
It was
I definitely need a more "culpable" bike. My rigs are too superior I guess, so I have only myself to blame for poor performances.\s
LOL
I need to start saving for an OSO. Dang it, I can't retire, yet.
AF for aluminum frame or fun. I take those were the previous gen Ripley & Ripmo, not the new ones that came out last month?
I really like the idea of Aluminum Fun! . You called it Alex this was filmed a week or 2 before before those updated models were released...Dang it
@@EverythingsBeenDonewould make for a good excuse to test out more bikes.
No dogs were harmed in the making of this video 😉
How in Ron’s holy name is the USA made version of the XC $1400 more than the Vietnamese version. Holy Cheeses!
I just put a Fox 140 on an Exie, we’ll see what that feels like, my other bike is a Ripmo…..
@PeteTabor The people here need more than 5 dollars a day…….
AF = Aluminum frame
I still ride a Ripmo v1
I mean...clearly you ride the low travel bikes on the North side and the Enduro/eBike on the South side. You did mean which bike is best for this particular riding area yes? :)
I didn't recognize the riding area, it looks too smooth for Sandy Ridge.
"Ribbon of rad"...,nice..✓
That’s a swingarm, dawgie
Get Rad !
LMAO!! 😜
A can of chrome spray paint applied, will make all that is ugly easier on thy eyes.
Fun video but you’re a little late re: Ripley and Ripmo.
When Ron?
Don’t buy ibis bikes the warranty is crap the frame is made out of soft cheese I know I own one never again 😢
What a bummer. Sorry to hear you had a poor experience with them.
