The Finnish Way of Drinking - Robert Gustafsson

  • Swedish comedian Robert Gustafsson portrays the 5 (stereotypical) stages of Finnish drinking on the TV-show Time Out. English subtitles. NB
Yes, the subtitles are wrong, at 0:14 Gustafsson says "euphoric happiness", not "fool's happiness" (although they are practically the same ;))
I misheard it when I hastily translated it for a friend to explain the Finnish mentality when it comes to alcohol, I never thought the video would get so many views... But the subs are hard-coded so I can't change them anymore.
    Tack och förlåt!

okay, as a finnish native speaker his accent is so on point it confuses me. like everything he says sounds like real finnish words, like he was actually speaking fluent finnish, but nothing he says makes sense.... it’s like i understand it and don’t at the same time. basically like listening to a real finnish drunk. so black out drunk nothing he says makes sense, but it sounds like it should. 😂

Henkka Henrik Can you give an assessment of the «accuracy» in this clip where the late Norwegian comedian Harald Heide Steen jr speaks gibberish Finnish? The clip starts with him (in character) speaking a Western Norwegian dialect, and then at 0:26 he encounters a Finn in the sauna on a ferry to Finland:

selenographia there is a slight swedish accent to it. it’s just a tad too soft and expressive. like probably somebody from åland, or a swedish guy living in finland. finnish accent is a bit more monotone and harsh than that. like we were a tad angry and swearing all the time no matter what we say.

It KIND of sounded like finnish, I could only make out a few words though. Probably says "Suomalainen" (means finn) in the beginning of the joy phase, and something that sounds like "Kaskelotti" (sperm whale) in the sorrow phase, although it's probably not what he actually says. And of course there's saatana and perkele, the most common curse words in finnish. It's like you're listening to finnish, but not understanding it. Weird feeling.

Here I was going to say that euforisk glädje doesn't mean fool's happiness, but what I find is an all out comment war. Please, can't we just have a cup of tea and chuckle to the video clip? I think the Finnish intoxication is beautiful.

Imitation is spot on. What he's saying certainly doesn't make any sense in Finnish (I'm a Finn) but it sure does sound hell of a lot like it, especially a drunk Finn.

Looks quite similar to the Irish way of drinking. Except they leave out the silent part, of course. :-)
