Served with the US Marine Corps and even in 2013/2014, rifle magazine retention was drilled into us hard, but the reason was related to the Taliban making IEDs with equipment dropped on patrol due to the likelihood another patrol may absent mindedly pick up the magazine thinking it had remained hidden until... boom. Magazine reload drills ALWAYS included mag retention whenever our Platoon Sgt or Squad Leader made us race each other.
Thats super interesting! I figured it would have simply been a more esoteric reason of keeping magazines to manually load rounds into assuming you run out mid firefight.
@@brobuscus1152 It had a lot to do with how we operated as well. Our patrols were mechanized with the exception being short range security patrols. The vehicles would drive us to a drop off point, move to overwatch, our foot patrol would continue for 3-5 hours, with the vehicles shadowing 2-300 meters away. They may add them being broken because initially the gun would block bullets that hit it but after a few days they updated that if your body is behind the gun when it is hit you will still take damage. While the PKM belt might look like it’s feeding correctly it doesn’t have the Soviet style empty belt coming out the other side. They use 50 round non-disintegrating link belts that come out that are supposed to be picked up and reused. Which is surprising since this is one of the few games I’ve seen that actually show links as well as empty brass ejecting from the M249 and the M60. A minor thing to be sure but the game is trying for realism after all. It can also be a visual indicator of how much ammunition is left in the carrier, if the gunner knows how many link belts have dropped off and how long the current one is.
I actually had a question that I had wondered about but couldn't find why RAF Chinockes had M60s instead of the GPMG answered. So thanks Johnathan for that.

I think it could plausibly make sense the M16A2s have that much wear after 3 years service, as most of the wear came from the heavy ongoing battles on Everon in 1989, the setting of the game. In the lore of the game, these same rifles were also seeing heavy use in combat in 1985.
I dunno if its just the little bits of gameplay I got to see but I like how all the guns seem to kick up dust and produce a little smoke a little touch but adds so much to realism.
Funny thing was I was at a 203 range before my last deployment in 07 the lane safety where I was firing noticed that I wasn't even using the sights and hitting all the targets. My buddy that was the safety then asked me if I used the sights, I then told him how much and many times I qualified with a 203 on M16a1, M16a2 and now on M-4 it was just a decoration now other than small window size targets.
fun fact: Reforger’s AK is zeroed at 440m by default, which is actually accurate as Soviet doctrine was to aim at enemies’ beltlines and hit them in the head/upper torso
Always nice to see these videos put up on my feed, keep them coming :) Maybe show Jonathan some weapons from mafia 2, there are some descriptions on the gunshops which i think he will find amusing, as well as a nice variety of classic weapons.
Also note that the AK-74 is automatically sighted to 440m, which was standard doctrine in the Russian military for the time. The idea was that you would aim for the belt line of an enemy soldier and typically the rounds would land around the chest area.
I remember looking at pictures in the magazine News Week. During Desert Storm in 1991. Where some units in the U.S. military had M16A2 rifles, and other units had M16A1 rifles.
I know this is about to be the most silliest comment but I don't think I've ever heard a British person say aluminum like an American, that was wicked!
Inconsistency spotted: Although the game's PKM machinegun seems to cycle the belt though the weapon realistically, we do not see the belt on the other side of the weapon as if it used NATO-style disintegrating links. The PK and PKM use non-disintegrating metal belts which come out of the left side of the receiver with each segment still attached to the next.
I used to have one of those woodland camo uniforms they're wearing in game. The US Uniform. When I was a kid, I would pretend I was in special forces missions, with BB guns. Hiding in bushes, pretending to cut power on fuseboxes, etc. In the apartments i lived in at the time, the landlord (Which i was very close with her kid as a good friend at the time) told me that someone donated this uniform we see in game. So naturally i wore it (Even though it was too big for me) and i loved it, so so much. I unfortunately do not have it anymore, as i've lost it from moving, but i really wish i still had it, it would at least fit me now, lol. I wish i knew the name of the person that donated it, so i could thank them for the uniform, and their service.
With head tracking the scopes have BEAUTIFUL parallax effect. So when your eye is not perfectly centered you get that black shadow that makes aiming impossible.
Those M-16's in the beginning reminded me of my first service weapon when I deployed to Iraq in 2003. They sent me to Ft. Hood from 3ID for "Casualty Replacement" . Basically a giant group of Infantry from varrying units, with varying skills, that would replace the injurrd up North. When they issued our weapons they gave us refurbished M-16 A1's, like Vietnam service M-16's 😆. They swapped the Auto selector for three round burst, but it still had full auto engraved on the side 😆. I think we had the oldest service rifles in the military back then 🤣 🤣 🤣. Eventually I was moved up to a janky M-249 that a soldier had abused thoroughly. It was the M-249 with the rotating, collapsible, stock, and the kid got so mad doing mission, after mission, he THREW it, and broke the upper retaining pin on the collapsible stock. If it dropped on you while firing or moving, the open bolt could fly out the back and smash you in the face, shoulder, chest, or your battle buddy 🤣.
16:35 - The AK-74 in the game has an early date on it (although the serial number format is honestly a bit weird). However that means an AKM gas block would actually be more correct, because that's how early AK-74 rifles were built. In fact, Tula made Soviet AK-74 rifles had the "OG" gas blocks as late as 1981 at which time all Izhmash produced ones already had the newer type.
Though MK48 is only used by the US SOCOM iirc just like it's smaller brother, the MK46 (which is basically just a lighter weight version of M249, still chambered in 5.56x45, with a different handguard, certain features such as the STANAG magwell and feeding system removed to save weight etc.)
"We got some clipping issues with the, the users face and the stock, which is clearly not intentional... I'm sure is going to be addressed..." Oh, yes, I am sure they are clearly going to address this... they did with ARM... oh... I uh... I wouldn't hold my breath...
Being a lucky one to have used both PKM and FN MAG: one weighs a lot less than the other, something you deeply appreciate after hauling it around for a week or so
I always find it funny when people say the M16A2 is dated or old. It's 2022 and I'm active duty Army and issued an M16A2 still. He'll, deployed twice with it
As a player and modder in Reforger, the m203 leaf sight is actually animated to flip up on use of the m203 but the code currently doesn't call for it. Just like the animation for the fire select switch, it's animated, just unfortunately doesn't call for it in the code. Even though some weapons do animate correctly, the m16a2 is probably the one with the most missing links in the code.
Regarding the M21. M21s were rebuilt by the FT Benning Marksmanship Unit with glass-bedded stocking from selected M14. It isn't just an M14 with a Leathwood ART scope stuck on it.
17:04 Once I wasn't thinking and shot at a tree while I was walking back home carrying a kayak on my head (it's upside down with my head basically inside it), and I thought I might've blown out my eardrums. It's just a little 9mm, not that loud, but with my head in that boat it sounded like a flashbang.
the M21 actually had a bit longer of a service life than 7 years with a few of them being pulled out of storage for service during the GWOT, same with many old M14s and M14NMs , though many of these M14s remained unaccurized and were modified with rails and scopes
Something I find insane that shows how far tech has came this could run on Steam deck a ps5 and a high spec pc and with the right settings would look and play good on all of them.

Want to know your take on the Boss disassembling Snake's 1911 without removing the slide stop and many many more...
A video on Warframe could be cool. As long as the selection of guns is good (a lot of them are just space magic, but a bunch of them are cool). Also Generation 0 could be a nice wild card, it has a lot of interesting systems (it also has an MP5, so I know he would like that).
I was always curious with the PKM, When shooting this thing, the brass, shoots out the left of the gun, and it's going to hit your arm with hot brass!!
Since it was asked in the video, yes, the "partial burst" feature of the M16 is correctly modelled in game. Prematurely stopping a three-fire burst will result in the next trigger squeeze to fire the remaining one or two bullets.

13:07 and 0:48
I hope its not just me but the M16 and the M60 are some of my most favorite weapons just because to me they look good.
I would love another episode of this game
1:26 The M16A2 does that ingame like he said.
WAIT WHAT? No way! I thought that the stopping mid burst and ending it with the next trigger pull thing was a bug :'D
Love to see Bohemia being recognized for their fantastic attention to detail.
Did you know the M249 comes in 7.62x51 as well? It's called the MK 48. Which doesn't come until 2003.
Yeah FN calls it the Maximi
Though MK48 is only used by the US SOCOM iirc just like it's smaller brother, the MK46 (which is basically just a lighter weight version of M249, still chambered in 5.56x45, with a different handguard, certain features such as the STANAG magwell and feeding system removed to save weight etc.)
I’ve been playing reforger since release and I just noticed the variable rate of fire during the PKM segment
This is the best Jonathan Ferguson video on GameSpot
Even though the game has lost its popularity, Dirtybomb has some familiar but frankenstiened firearms that would be interesting to show Jonathan
I miss that game... ;3; Gone too soon!
why?
ah lol nvm i thouhgt u talk about reforger, but yes sadly dirtybomb died. played it a lot
I see Jonathan is a cultured man, sporting a C&Rsenal cycle of violence t-shirt.
"We got some clipping issues with the, the users face and the stock, which is clearly not intentional... I'm sure is going to be addressed..."
Oh, yes, I am sure they are clearly going to address this... they did with ARM... oh... I uh... I wouldn't hold my breath...
Cough DayZ cough
yet another fantastic video. "Cycle of Violence" t-shirt by C&Rsenal noted
I really like that tshirt Jonathan is wearing. I've seen it in some of his other videos and I want one
Regarding the M21. M21s were rebuilt by the FT Benning Marksmanship Unit with glass-bedded stocking from selected M14. It isn't just an M14 with a Leathwood ART scope stuck on it.
I'd love for Jonathan to take a look at some of the weapons in Warframe. A lot of unique ones there.
this is an AK, there are many like it but this one is ours
Love it!
Once again rocking the C&Rsenal shirt. Long live the Cycle of Violence! :D
19:15 Not only is it scaled correctly, game has manual that teaches you to use it correctly.
Would love to see Jonathan’s take on star citizen. Cool combos of ballistic and energy weapons in that game
the M21 actually had a bit longer of a service life than 7 years with a few of them being pulled out of storage for service during the GWOT, same with many old M14s and M14NMs , though many of these M14s remained unaccurized and were modified with rails and scopes
Something I find insane that shows how far tech has came this could run on Steam deck a ps5 and a high spec pc and with the right settings would look and play good on all of them.
Excellent commentary Johnathon.
The M9 headshot from across the street was nice. Just drops like a sack of potatoes.
"Aluminium" Love Jonathan 😄
Next TARKOV wipe there will be the g36 and AUG but even without the wipe we need Jonathan to react to more TARKOV guns
I reckon you should do either metal gear solid 4 or mgsV (mgs5) I reckon there is a very good range of weapons and some good possible cursed guns to make Jonathan hurt inside for all of our visual pleasure
It does model the M16 burst correctly and I was both very impressed and annoyed. Lol
They do actually model the 2 round burst thing, I've tested it myself
"There are many like it but this one is ours" nice reference
Never played ARMA 3 or any of ARMA game but I heard a lot of good things about it
Thank you for wearing one of C&Rsenal's "Cycle of Violence" shirts.
Would be really cool if Jonathan made a video on *METAL GEAR SOLID 3* weapons. Been requesting for so long.
So many weapons in that game to comment on like the patriot, the EZ gun, Snake's M1911, Ocelot's SAA and Eva's chinese mauser clone. Want to know your take on the Boss disassembling Snake's 1911 without removing the slide stop and many many more...
Have Mr. Ferguson react and analyze Weapons from Killzone and Resistance series.
The M16-a2 looks just like what I was issued wear and all. We don't run around with fancy new weapons lol.
After all these years, WHERE ARE THE SLINGS!?!?!
I'd like to see Tom Clancy's The Division 2 weapons in the next episode, specifically exotics like the Eagle Bearer or Ravenous
Would love to see more historical shooters based during the 90s Balkan/Yugoslavia era war honestly.
i know its a old indie game, but i would love jonathan to look at EYE weapons
A video on Warframe could be cool. As long as the selection of guns is good (a lot of them are just space magic, but a bunch of them are cool).
Also Generation 0 could be a nice wild card, it has a lot of interesting systems (it also has an MP5, so I know he would like that).
New Order and Colossus first... get in line.
The kinda recently added a hard cover mounting system and I amazing on the LMG’s and marksman rifles for those long shots or many quick shots
Great vid as always guys. Would love to see Jonathan pick apart ghost recon wildlands' guns sometime ;)
This video was amazing!
I was always curious with the PKM, When shooting this thing, the brass, shoots out the left of the gun, and it's going to hit your arm with hot brass!!
You know you must have done it right when Jonathan is struggling to find something to complain about on your in game guns
