    Putting this response I made to someone here for anyone who might think I've been insanely ignorant:
    I'll be the first to admit I'm a layman, but I've watched the review back so as to be able to respond to some other comments, and I don't talk about the movement all that much. Granted, that might be doing it a disservice, but it seems my main hang-up (I haven't handled the watch since I made this video well over a year ago) was the QC and the price. I think I read about the Tuna history here (have done a quick Google to see my admittedly not academic-level research):
    thespringbar.com/blogs/guides/the-seiko-tuna-collectors-guide/
    I've not changed my mind that the price seems steep. There are other models, albeit now discontinued, with the same movement that retail for much less (SBBN035 and SBBN031, for example). The latter has the same movement but comes on a bracelet and retails for less, but has a Hardlex crystal, making me think Seiko is charging about £300 for a sapphire crystal (another user also pointed this out). I understand this movement is well built for compression diving, as others have noted, and that it can handle pressures whilst remaining accurate, has magnetic resistance, etc, etc. but a watch is a whole package. If it was purely based on movements alone, there would be no reason to buy a Zelos with an NH35 over a Pagani Design equipped with the same.

    All the "what, quartz!?"-comments are laughable. Clearly shows the level of ignorance in the watch community.

    Probably the most unqualified review of this watch by anyone to date. If you don't understand the value of a watch with such a unique quartz movement and heritage, you're simply ignorant.

    Sorry bud, I have to say you didn't do your homework on this one. The 7c46 movement is one of the most revered quartz movements out there. It's also a saturation diver, domed sapphire crystall and the lume never quits. I was also surprised by the price however this watch is in a league on its own. Love your channel but please do some homework before slagging off on a fine watch. This is not a $300 plastic Solar tuna.

    • @wooncheefei2728
      @wooncheefei2728 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True ,and the seiko quart is top in the world,Author have to check the history of "quartz crisis"

    • @LumePip
      @LumePip  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I get that while the 7C46 is an incredibly robust and revered quartz movement, my major gripe from what I can remember was the build quality of the piece for the price. The bezel action, for example, made it unusable as a diver. And while the movement is built for extreme depths and to be used for a lifetime, that bezel absolutely wasn't, which I couldn't accept at the price, especially given this is one of those rare instances of a dive watch that might be used for diving! I should also say I love Seiko's designs and know they do incredible things with their calibres, but if they put them in poorly executed cases (as I believe they have done in this one case), then I won't just let their history mean they get away with it. I'm sure many other people have this same watch and it doesn't have any issues with the bezel, which only goes to show their QC isn't consistent and buying one can feel like a lottery. I think a lot of people just assumed I hate Seiko because of this, haha, but I actually did another video on a different model which I loved. I appreciate your feedback, though, and I agree that Seiko lume is on another level. Also, I want to look at some of their awesome Presage dress watches, as some of the dials at that price point are insane!

      @@LumePip you spent most of the review mocking the fact it was a quartz for 1300 quid, and what other things you could get with that cash..without knowing anything about it. It is like your mate loaned you the watch for you to make a massive fool out of yourself with, guving you enough rope to hang yourself.

    • @southerncomfort7490
      @southerncomfort7490 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      No it isn't a $300 'plastic' Solar tuna. The latter, for all practical purposes, is a far better watch. The solar has a movement that will never need a battery change; its lume is easily comparable and its movement of excellent quality that will last just as long at the 7c46. True, it is a 200 metre as opposed to a 300 metre dive watch. Yet has that really mattered to anyone? Just consider that the Tudor Pelagos XD, designed for French naval divers, has a rating for 200. Good enough for them, good enough for me. Hardex as opposed to Sapphire, sure. A diving watch with a sapphire crystal (sorry Rolex!) is not a good idea. They will shatter on impact. Hardex, in contrast, will just bear punishment. Moreover, the protective outer casing being 'plastic' is a positive benefit. It means that the watch is light (an underrated consideration in watches), and will not be a 'scratch magnet.'
      Best of all, the price of the Solar Tuna is respectable and does not take the customer for a ride.

    The old tuna sbbn031 without sapphire was around 1100$ and nobody complained about the price. This new tuna with sapphire costs 1400$. So 300$ price increase for this upgrade is not that much. For comparison Sinn charges 500€ for sapphire.

    • @Chef_Alpo

      That's utterly ridiculous no matter who is charging that for a $30 crystal, and not everyone does that. $300 is an insult.

    • @LumePip
      @LumePip  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fair enough, Terry. I agree on the whole 20k Rolex thing. Those that might appreciate them more for what they are and what they do, as tool watches (although I wouldn't be wearing a Sub for putting a shelf up!), will only be willing to pay retail and end up on the dreaded, seemingly eternal, waiting list of doom.

    Not only is Seiko older than Rolex, but an important, perhaps the MOST important part of Seiko's heritage is its development of dive watches. Not only are the real Tunas iconic, but the movement in this watch is the same as used in the original Tuna that gave the line its nickname, and is still relevant today, being specially built to handle great depths. The idea that you're supposed to be a watch enthusiast, yet, are so ignorant as to equate this with cheap modern quartz movements as found in, say, Casios and Citizens, is laughable.

    • @LumePip
      @LumePip  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I didn’t appreciate the movement’s heritage but also thought the watch was steep as an overall package. My complaints were mainly regarding the strap (which really could do with a second keeper) and the bezel, which has no resistance and a lot of play in it for a watch at that price. Plus I don’t think at any point I equated it with Casio and Citizens, did I?? 🤔if I did, I shouldn’t have, but watching it back, I don’t think I mention them at all. I mention buying an Oris/CW/actual tins of tuna instead, which I still would over this. I remember it not feeling like the £300 price hike they’d given it over the non-sapphire model was justified, which other commenters had mentioned. Also, I do say, if you like this and other Seiko models around this price, “more power to you.” I’ve done a video on a Seiko I liked, too, and would do more if I could afford to keep buying them in.

    Couldn't be happier with mine. In fact I wear it so much and is so comfy that its stopped me from buying the steel bracelet AND a dressier Grand Seiko. Honestly cannot stop looking at it. Managed to get £190 off too. But it is expensive for a Seiko quartz - even super quartz.

    Long live the TUNA DIVER'S 200M 300M, 600M and the 1000M. Bro, TUNA is the type of watch you have to hate to appreciate it. TUNA is not for everyone. Matter of fact, I get millions of compliments on my SEIKO 5 SNKL23 than any of my TUNA.
    Additionally, while I demonstrably disagree with your opinions I am gracious enough to respect your review and I thank you for your constructive criticism.
    I will add however, your objective criticism and dislike is equally shared across all SEIKOS of the modern Era. SEIKOS QC has declined yet the prices have gone up. That I agree.
    God Bless.

  • @mmcallery
    @mmcallery 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This may be my inner fan boy but the 7c46 quarts movement part of the draw of the tunas, you can only get them in tunas. they are super tough with 7 jewels and fully serviceable. although the stated accuracy is ± 15sec a month they frequently get less than 3 sec a month. There are also 10 years marked out of the back of the watch to show you when your next battery change is due so seiko expects it to last that long right out of the gate. The second had will almost always be aligned, the 7c46 is well-known for good second hand alignment. , but they aren't for everyone and i understand that, the same way a Rolex to me makes no sense to me at all. they are exy and generic looking, their lume is the best thing about them.

    • @LumePip
      @LumePip  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s really interesting! I didn’t know this movement had such prowess. And it’s cool that it’s only found in Tuna models, but I stand by what I say in the video about it being overpriced. The bezel action did it for me! Also, absolutely fair to be a fanboy sometimes, mate! There are some brands that do that to us! Thanks for the wicked comment 👍👍

    • @mmcallery
      @mmcallery 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LumePip i cant disagree with you there. they are not cheap and the bezel action on that one did look like a lemon, that really isnt acceptable at all for the price. my tunas bezel has an amazing action, feel and sound as they should. in my case i bought the watch for life so its high inital cost seems irrelevant to me but thats not for everyone. Thanks for the detailed reply, its much appreciated 👍

    An honest review for THAT particular watch and I agree with what you say about the possible QC . The problem is that with anything that is on a large production scale , be it cars , bikes , home electricals etc , you're going to get good and bad regardless of the price , and that's unfortunate but it's a real world problem. I'm a big fan of Seiko and have a couple of their models which are fantastic , one being the king turtle manta ray , what I do like about the tuna is that it looks a beautiful designed watch , Seiko's seem to have aesthetics designed very well but then again I like Japanese watches so maybe I'm biased ?

    It used to be only serious divers would buy proper (saturation) divers watches (Seiko, Rolex, Doxa, Omega, etc.) and they would use them as an actual dive instrument. They probably didn't care too much if the chapter ring alignment is off by 1/2 minute, or so, etc. Back then, the average person wouldn't normally want to wear these oversized watches (as proper divers watches typically would be) in his day to day life to start with. Nowadays, however, we've got the average "office drone" Joe wanting the same dive instrument on his wrist to make him look cool while he is in the office (or a shopping mall) and is concerned about these trivial little details that don't really impair the functionality as a dive instrument.

    That watch is a proper tool watch, used for saturation diving, Japanese saturation divers tried the automatic movements in them and they didn't work, hence going to Qaurtz.
    It is one of the most robust movements on the planet.

    Talking about the metal keeper on the rubber strap. I have a seiko save the ocean turtle and it has a metal keeper supplied with it. it tends to let the strap fall out of it and I have to push it back into position. A much better option would be to use a rubber keeper as this would hug the strap more tightly and prevent undue movement.

    I bought an Alpina Seastrong Quartz a few months ago for a really good sale price (half MSRP) as I couldn't afford this, my dream watch. I have to say I'm supremely impressed with it so far, and the pictures online do not do it justice in person (the PVD isn't matte, it's as shiny as polished SS). (no affiliation with Alpina). Hadn't even heard of the watch brand in my multi year quest for the do it all dream watch that met my specs. It was an easy choice. This would have to be cheaper for me to justify it. Worth a look for anyone looking for a 44 mm, 300 m, sapphire diver, quartz, with 22 mm band, and a lug to lug of just under 50 mm. Second to this for me was the 44 mm Longines Hydroconquest quartz but the lug to lug of 55+ mm was a show stopper.

      Good question! I’ve only seen what’s on TH-cam and on the Scottish Watches podcast, but seems like a pretty big balls up from them. Though I’m not an expert on it by any stretch. Do you know any more about it than me? It wouldn’t take much! But what’s your take on it?

      I really like the channel and the boys, they are very entertaining and I have watched them from the beginning, but I think when their videos start getting well over an hour long people started to drop off, so this little stunt has brought many back to see what is going to happen next.
      I think they are very clever, but have upset a few people along the way, it’s their channel and their business, so they can try whatever they like 👍

      Yeah, I was a bit late to the party on the whole thing to be honest. I heard they were making longer videos, and I don’t mind that usually, but I suppose this was part of a wider thing. It’s been good in general for the whole watch community, though - people who mightn’t have normally been bothered have been drawn in by the drama 😂not much of that here unfortunately ha

    Agree, Seiko sweet spot is around £500...had an alpinist, beautiful but inaccurate and a new 6r35 Sumo, a really stunning watch in person but the movement was useless (+ or - minutes per day, & not consistent)... Whereas my Turtle was a great watch which easily out performed it's pricier siblings!!!
    The Tuna is an icon, but quartz isn't my thing...too expensive? Almost certainly, but we pay for what we value and that's up to the owners to decide, I've got many thing that others wouldn't want at any price but I'm OK with that as long as it makes me happy.
    Cheers Mate 👍🏻👍🏻

      My Sea Urchin ran like a tank - bumpy, unorthodox and borderline unusable. I loved it though, and the price was right. If people love the quartz, more power to ‘em, but the bezel on this actually angered me! Not up to snuff for the money. 😕

    Not going to jump on the Seiko hate wagon as I love the brand and how well it serves All market segments. Besides it’s become “in” to hate on Seiko...Breitling...Tag...to name a few. If you want to play with the cool kids then echo back Rolex, Tudor, Omega...and Oris. Just shying away from the higher priced Seiko models as there are other more refined options. For example many of the lower to mid range Swatch group brands.

    • @LumePip
      @LumePip  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think if there’s a hate wagon, then I think there’s an issue. I didn’t get this watch in my hands and think, “I like this watch, but there are some other people who don’t like the brand at the moment so I’ll feign hate for the sake of views” - I hardly have any sway or following on here, I do this off my own back and not because I want to ensure I’m conforming with the opinions of others. If people like Seiko and want to see their profits soar at the expense of quality, then I suggest they join their board of directors. I’m not going to deny there are models from more favoured brands that mightn’t deserve it, but I can only review what’s put in front of me. I’ve paid the money a Tuna costs for an Oris and, yes, much to many people’s dismay, it seems, it’s far superior. If people disagree, that’s cool, and I’m happy to hear others’ experiences. Like I say in the video, I think Seiko CAN offer great models a bit further down the pricing pyramid. And hey, there’s Grand Seiko for the high-end lux space too. I’d love to try one of those one day! ❄️

    I was very disappointed, when I got mine. It rattled inside (a quartz watch shouldn't do that) and the crown was so off center, it was right next to the edge of the shroud, almost touching it. And the bezel action is way too smooth, way too easy to turn, almost no resistance. It makes the watch feel delicate and fragile, not tough. Funny thing is, when I told the seller about the rattling noise, they tried to convince me that it was all right, and if it bothered me, I should take it ti Seiko. Needless to say, the watch went back. I made a video abou it: th-cam.com/video/0y84GK0-NJA/w-d-xo.html

    • @LumePip
      @LumePip  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, see, I disagree. I’m not talking about bezel misalignment. In fact, I’m categorically not talking about it in this video. I’m pointing out that the bezel action is virtually nonexistent on a dive watch, so it doesn’t serve its purpose well. And as consumers, we’re entitled to feel whatever we like about something we’ve paid our hard-earned money for. If you like the watch regardless of those faults, that’s fine, and I’d defend your right to feel that way. But to excuse a company for selling sub-par products to consumers seems sycophantic.
