      One is inherently a flex, and comes with a tax, the other is a brilliantly designed workhorse that also had a certain charm/allure and is reasonably priced. I do certainly enjoy Rolex, however I think their business strategy similar to Ferrari is inherently appalling and a vestige of the past and will inevitably have to change within the next few decades

    The correct background is a saturation diver lives in a mixed gas habitat w helium. The helium would leak into the watch casing and the crystals would pop out during decompression. Rolex and many others drill an additional hole in the casing and install a helium escape valve (eg Sea Dweller) to make a saturation diver. Seiko wanted a more robust elegant engineering solution so they put a lot of work into the gaskets which can seal out the helium and therefore negate the need for a helium escape valve.

    • @insearchoftheperfectwatch934
      @insearchoftheperfectwatch934 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for writing that. My head exploded when Jory said that the Japanese divers wanted a more robust movement, and the mechanical movements couldn't handle deep dives (Huh? Why not?), so Seiko went with a quartz movement. No. The whole point of why they invented the Tuna is what you described, above.

  • @khronokraze

    Lug to lug, I think they are nearly the same. So on the wrist, they are both actually very wearable.. More surprisingly the tuna because its perceived dimensions.
    And the tuna is all its own, no way a Rolex Submariner homage.

    Great review/contrast. I have to ask … your Tuna bezel actually lines up and … the second hand hits the chapter ring/minute track dead on! Were you able to hand pick your Tuna to get one that lines up perfectly? A quartz second hand that hits between the minute markers is sooooo annoying. How did you get one so tuned?

    Great video! Love it and appreciate to see when someone gives credit to the Fifty Fathoms over the Rolex. I can't see how anyone can say a Tuna is a Rolex homage ... To the general public and people that are not as informed and knowledgeable in horology and are not watch enthusiast, you can have a $100k watch on your hand and they won't know the difference from a Casio if it's not a Rolex. So just buy and wear whatever makes you happy!

  • @BarkandJack
    @BarkandJack 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Totally agree with your points. If I were someone who actually needed a tool watch for its durability and accuracy, I'd totally go for something like the Tuna. But for a versatile watch that suits all occasions and that's totally kick ass, one can't beat the Submariner, especially the 16800! Great video, and nice one for addressing the difference between fact and opinion - I feel people get twisted about opinions.

    The Zodiac Sea Wolf also came out in 1953 and was the first dive watch with a rotating timing bezel. It also had a better dive rating of 339 feet compared to Blancpain's 300 feet. Dive watch history has almost forgotten these facts entirely when comparing to Rolex and Blancpain, sadly.

  • @G1NZOU

    Wranglerstar's choice of going with the Tuna is incredibly sensible, he wanted a quartz for the durability and being able to put it down for long periods and still have it keep time, he wears it while doing forestry and firefighting, and he's a relatively frugal guy, so while the Submariner is an amazing watch, for practical purposes the Tuna is far more affordable for one thing, but also built like a tank, which is exactly what he wanted from a watch.

    Well, I also have both a Rolex (16600) and the newest Tuna (sbbn49). The Rolex has terrible lume, poor timekeeping and feels like it’s made of baked bean cans. BUT yet I still love it and it’s heritage. You are entirely correct about it’s ‘not losing money’ but it costs a lot to run and it’s also very irritating interacting with dealer or watch shops who constantly think it may be stolen. Abd when they are or have been then it’s also impossible to know unless it Goes in for service and you later discover it.

      Hercules Theban Or they can afford said product. For some people 10k is not a lot of money and with Rolex and especially if you buy a preloved, steel sports watch you will either retain your purchase value or in some cases gain value.
      I know a lot if people who rock subs and other steel sports watches and I assure you they have no intention of trying to show status by their watch but they enjoy the quality of the watch. Believe me you can tell the difderence in quality between a Rolex and something not in the price range. Every single detail is done to an extremely high level on a Rolex where in lower end watches there is always a compromise.

    Great comparison, and excellent video. My two cents: I wouldn't call the 3035 less robust than the 7C46, because the former was utilized in the Seadweller, used by the same professionals the Tuna was designed for. IMHO the main difference is not one of functionality, but of value: The Tuna can do everything a Seadweller can do at 1/8th the cost.

    If I really needed a dive watch, the Tuna would win hands down, but for a versatile timepiece, I'd stick to my Casio Duro. The Subbie to me is a victim of its own success. There's so many Subbie clones that can do it's job as well as a Subbie.

    Damn!!! Buy a casio g shock. It runs for 3 generation. Cheap but when it breaks no hard feelings..

      I have a g shock but it pretty much only gets worn at night due to the light. I would never pick a g shock over a tuna or sub- or any decent watch- unless I was doing some hardcore manual labour (which I don’t really do) or extreme sports (which again I don’t do).

    Subs are one of the most boring watches out there in my opinion. I don't see the hype of wearing a tool watch with suit and tie despite the advertising that Rolex wanted the consumers to believe

    sold my Daytona got the tuna I wear my skx013 when I dress up I love em both. the Daytona always worried about it getting scratch getting it stolen and people thought it was a show off piece and it was I didn't like that bye bye I had a tuna in the 80s I live in Hawaii and lost it diving all the guys wanted the tuna so ill never sell either. my skx 013 is as good as the Daytona and it keeps better time my tuna is spot on for months to the second the tuna is the watch. to me none better than the tuna.

    Dig your videos! Starting to watch them daily. Clean up your background. Shelves to cluddered and ditch that sign that says let me file that under.... Your to classy for that bro. Also add your cats to some of your reviews. People love cats. Google floss and watch one of his tech reviews. Wishlist for watch reviews... Helson, VDB, Stowa and Marathon Field Watch (plastic one). Anyways big fan of your channel and love the way you communicate all the details. 👍👍👍

    If that Tuna was solar, it might me my ideal concept of a tool diver! Either way, it is certainly badass! I would be interested to hear what you think of Citizen’s Ecozilla. It is a much more affordable version of a serious tool watch diver.

    If given the option to choose 1 between both of these watches I would rather choose the Seiko Tuna its unique in all the way possible. If we are into thinking that while dressing up it wont help then for that it leaves you enough budget to buy a Rolex Air King for dress watch. If we total it up we spend much less than 1 rolex sub but still be a talk of the show.

    In the end a Rolex is a Rolex. If you want to get something that’s different and more utilitarian get the Tuna but personally, taking the size into account, I think the Sub is more attractive to a larger variety of people.

    Great video and comparison. Honestly I would not buy either if these watches. Both are fantastic, however, as a recreational diver I don't need a saturation diver. Although it looks super cool. And the submariner is easily one of the best looking watches ever made and a fantastic tool watch. However, there are tons of watches in the$1000 dollar range that can do the same thing that the sub does. I just can't bring myself to spending that kind of money on a watch. I'll stick with my SKX.

      Sam D. You can apply that theory to many genres of watches. Does one need a IWC Big Pilot to fly a Boeing 747. Nope. Most watch collectors do not use tool watches for their intended purpose. All watches are just kool horology.

    Wranglerstar is a family that left urban lifestyle for country prepping... (I think of a successful Green Acres). Remember when he lost a few Benchmade knifes and tried lesser brands and still went back to the Benchmade.
    Over the years have watched many of these types of channels and they each come from a different perspective... But a tool needs to be a tool and a reliable tool at that.

    How about the “Baby” Tuna? The BT is smaller, cheaper, and still quartz accurate. The BT isn’t stainless steel, but it’s still rugged.
