      Bmw will upgrade in late 2021 all models with 48V technology...so consumption will drop few deciliters...but yes downsizing only works for car manufacturers = less cost in production...

    Like your way of humor. The BMW 1Series is, I think, one of the least further developed cars of the last 15 years. 43.000 Euro for this one: a joke.

    • @Astke
      @Astke 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You mean like every car in it's class? Getting to 43K euro is easy. The previous 1 series wasn't exactly cheap either. Where I work, this new one is actually cheaper to lease than the old one.
      Also define least further developed? You don't even explain what you mean by that. This car is miles ahead of the old 1 series. Most of you dislike it for not having RWD. Which let's be fair, is still very subjective and doesn't really matter for normal driving. And yes, I loved the way the old one handled.
      The DC transmission is the worst part of this car...Reminds me of DSG. Which is generally alright... until you floor it. Even then I think that the pros outweigh the cons. It is just a more rounded car that does everything well. And as far as FWD normal hatchbacks go this handles really well. Just test drive it.

    In the Skoda Octavia the wipers also stop with the start stop system. Many cars do. So this is definitely not just BMW thing....
    A lot or road noise? Of course in a c-segment car with 18 inch wheels. I have also test driven the 118i M-Sport and it was more than quiet enough. My corolla also has 18 inch wheels and it is way louder than this one (which is one of the reasons why I am getting rid of it). If you don't like the loud road noise get 17 inch wheels or something. Most smaller cars are loud on big wheels and rougher surfaces. There is not much you can do about that. Even the Mazda 3 on the 18 inches makes a lot of road noise. And that car is known for having a relatively quiet cabin.
    The engine reminded me of a VW 1.0 TSI with a bit more punch and a slightly nicer sound. Which is well... I am not sure. Kind of neutral about it. The biggest mistake IMO is that they went to a dual-clutch AT. The time it needs to shift down when you floor it is pretty long. Otherwise it is smooth
    Overall I think the old 118i is more fun, but for everyday use this one is way better. There is just no arguing that. Unless your daily commute is composed of almost only twisty mountain/country roads and you don't care about the interior and tech.

    I [was?] looking for a car the replace my 2-Series Active Tourer 220i and did try-out this F40 but in 128ti guise as they don't sell the 120i here in the UK and i could tell the 118i would be too weedy for me. Looking back at this review you were spot-on with your findings, one of the reasons why i didn't go for the 128ti/1er F40 in general was the roof-line too low - yes i hit my head a couple of times. Suspension seemed too stiff on this version for everyday driving but at least the sport brakes work properly as my 2er has those dangerous brakes you mentioned - i was also having similar dud braking in a G21 320i recently, for a bit, when test-driving.
    Also i did find that iDrive 7 dash is a bit info overload, like u said - head-up-display helps. I like the old iDrive - partly analogue - 6 system, just all the info u need and easy to read, some would say it looks dated i just think it looks neat & functional. Wait till next year when it goes to iDrive 8!!!!! 😬
    Good review Marek. Just to note for others: I believe this test car was the M-Sport model in which case those seats are optional on other models also the steering wheel & suspension would be different; gesture opening of boot and 40:20:40 splits seats are both optional extras on all models.

  • @Dominionlord

    OK for city driving but when u get on to highways and such the smaller engine really has to work extra, also smaller engine = less torque, sometimes u have to rev more to gain the same as in a larger engine, e.g 1.5 L 118i vs 2.0 L 120i, generally 120i will always drink more but only slightly so, and you can drive on highways without sacrificing as much fuel... Maybe stage 1-2 the 118i and it'll be more efficient at higher speeds, of course it has to be done correctly so the engine doesn't lose longevity

      The B38(?) 3-cylinder engine has a balancer shaft that smooths out unbalanced firing strokes. There is a shudder on starting but then the engine runs very smoothly - nearly as good as a 6. I had a F20 118i and my wife has a F56 MINI Cooper both with that engine - it’s really good.

    So tired of BMW FWD vehicles. The X3 (also FWD based) is an abomination -- was given one as a loaner. The Aisin transmission was GARBAGE in stop and go driving like rush hour -- I'd rather drive a Hyundai Accent.

    • @derekdalton5658
      @derekdalton5658 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aisin transmission is awful. I could live with a new FWD but not that transmission. Will keep my ZF 118i.👍

      Not really fair, the 118i drives like a charm, believe me. Minis are not that cheap, also, and they are good cars. European regulations are strict and small engines are the answer. Audi is selling A3s with 1L engines for more than 35K Euros 😂
