    The 118i feels better and makes sense because this is the spec the new 1-series was designed for.. The 135i has no real right to exist anymore now the biggest fun factors (6-cylinder and RWD) are removed for that enthousiasts version.. Now It's just a hot hatch that offers nothing special anymore over it's competitors..

    • @mpc007
      @mpc007 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The M135i was positioned to compete against the Golf R and Audi S3. Those are not the most exciting cars either. The new M2 coupe will be still RWD + 6 cil powered and will be the new compact beast. Which is fine by me.

    Excellent video, really informative! I’ve just bought the 118i with nothing like that amount of extras! I got the auto gear box, privacy windows, heated Steering wheel and Strorm Bay Grey! Getting excited now! First BMW I’ve ever owned and several post suggest this car had been ruined now that it’s front Wheel Drive???? I found it to be a great drive for my requirements!!

    The 118i makes sense.... but having had a e87 118d with a stage 1 map previous to my mk5 GTI... I can confirm that without doubt the 118i had more thrill and fun factor to it other than the engine... it was fun, had good steering, excellent driving position and the rear wheel feel... that can’t be beaten... my mk5 GTI doesn’t give me the same thrill. Yes it’s faster, yes it sounds better and yes it grips way more but it doesn’t have the thrill a 118d with a power hike gave me... perosnally

    • @mikedelicus
      @mikedelicus 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the most thrill factor of older BMWs is the hydraulic servo steering and they had a rougher suspension too in basic versions. I was really shocked switching from a 150hp E46 to a F20 125d with basic suspension, I find the new one very boring to drive, also the steering is very fluffy. Don't expect the old dynamic drive feel on modern BMWs. If you buy a new one make a test drive for checking out if you need a performance package for the fun factor.

  • @danilorodriguez4665

    Hi Joe, happened that I own a F20 118i and a Mini Cooper, both with the same engine, here mi thoughts.
    Transmission, the mini cooper has the same tranny as the F40 118i, 7 speed DCT from GETRAG and the F20 118i has the ZF8 and I can feel how different they are, the kick down in the DCT is slower and the ZF feels punchier and smooth.
    Drive, recently took the entry level F20 118i with same B38 engine and ZF-8 in a hill climb road trip, and let me say that driving fast a slow car is very fun, with all nannies off and sport mode engaged I can feel how the rear moves and “dance” trough the corners, the car turns beautifully and flow in the winding roads as natural as it can be.
    Same drive with the mini cooper same engine but 7 speed DCT, also feel fun but different, the mini cooper “hug” trough the corners and grips very tight, no dance no flow just grip and grab the tarmac, fun, yes but different from the RWD 118i with the same engine.
    So even the entry level F20 118i with RWD and ZF-8 brings a great driving experience from my perspective.

    • @peterkukolik8402
      @peterkukolik8402 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ZF 8-speed also has a lag, when you press the gas pedal right after you have just stopped pressing the brake pedal to slow down, it is not 2-3 second lag, but it is noticeable (maybe 0,5sec). Nevertheless, the ZF is a fantastic gearbox.

      Couldn't agree more I'm in the same boat owning an F20 118i and I think it's great not the fastest thing ever but quicker that most things on the road and down a tight backroad it's a lot of fun as much as I'd like to have a M140i I think it would just get me in trouble and cost too much haha hopefully one day tho

    As a driver's car - the 1 series is dead ... But when the old M135i came out - we never had the 2 series .... Drivers now have the 2 series, and families have a proper 1 series

    I've just driven both of these and to my mind the 118i Msport was way better on small technical (fun) roads, I'm sure this is down to the weight of the 118i - it's about 200Kg less!! The M135i only made cense to me as a small luxury car with a very powerful engine.

    I guess BMW will finally find out what percentage of 1-series buyers bought them because they were good to drive, and what percentage bought them because of the BMW badge ;) The first car I bought with my own money was a 2004 BMW 120i - it was the best new-ish rear wheel drive car I could afford, and it got me hooked on the BMW brand. I don't think these new cars will have the same pull on young buyers who actually enjoy driving... assuming such people still exist?

    • @voivod6871
      @voivod6871 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      BMW have done the research and found that something like 70-80% of 1 series drivers didn't even release that their car war RWD and most of the rest didn't care. Only 3% of 1 series sold have been M135/M140i models and even some of those folks aren't RWD fanatics. So BMW figured that 97% of 1 series owners would prefer more cabin and boot space rather than a car that losses traction in the winter.I love my M135i but my driveway is on a slope as soon as there is even a light smattering of snow i'm stuck it will not even nearly get up the drive but my daughters FWD Leon Cupra will breeze up it no problem.

    • @texnorthman
      @texnorthman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@voivod6871 I am sure you are right, still sad for the 1% of us that love RWD cars, or even proper 4 wheel drive cars without a front wheel bias.
      As for snow I've had two rear drive BMWs and one GT86, no issues in Norwegian winters with proper tires, but on some pilot sports you'll certainly get stuck, no doubt.

    • @Astke
      @Astke 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All cars cost more now. Relatively speaking it is not 1 to one but still more expensive. Caused by many things. More tech, more regulations etc. Basically the market/goverment has become more demanding. Cars need to do all that the old cars did, but better and more. All while being safer and less fuel consuming. Of course things are going to be more expensive. Also taxes. Here in The Netherlands prices are mostly based on emissions. This a well equipped 118i cas easily go above 40000 Euros or even reach 50000. An m135i starts at 60000 here. So you still have it relatively well there.

      You’re not sick, I’m looking at this very model for my next car, and although the looks have been slated, I actually like it, although the M Sport trim for me, is a must. It may look like a Ford Focus, but Ford’s interiors are crap, compared to the Teutonic class leaders. I even looked at the focus vignale, which is similarly priced, with the 1.5 eco boost engine. Considering the Ford’s 42 bop gain, performance is almost identical, and the interior of the beemer, is far superior. Had a 120d in 2013, and BMW’s customer service was way, way better than Fords. I know where my money is going, but each to their own and all that.

    Adaptives are only option on the four cyl. models AFAIK. And yes, I also noted the delay when going full throttle in comfort mode, it was quite a disappointment bc I thought BMWs automatics were always amazing. The old 8 spd steptronic in the F20 118 certainly didnt respond so lazy. However, I found that when you put either the car in sport mode or the gearbox in S (or both) things improve a lot and its workable. Still definitely not a strongpoint tho, and I suprised me none of the reviewers noted it. The 7 DCT seems to have been developed to cut cost over the 8 speed full auto and NOT as a real improvement, and this is where it shows.. Maybe it can be fixed with new software from tuning companies??

    Engine and drivetrain aside it’s definitely a forward step in technology, I have an LCI2 140i and my New Vauxhall Van has more tech, not that I see driving aids as a good thing, try changing lanes and the van tries to correct you, maybe because I’m not using the indicators while doing so but indicators on a motorway are useless and I’m not in the habit of using them in the BMW.

    £27K with £11K options 😑 So £38K (read £40K) for an underpowered 3cyl 1.5? For comparison the 1.5 ltr 3cyl Ford EcoBoost is 210ps with 300nm. Why did you give the New A1 such a hard time? At least it has a 150hp 4-pot for £21-25K - This just feels biased again. Because it’s a BMW you seem so sympathetic... 💁🏻‍♂️

    Style over substance - they'll sell plenty in Brighton.
    I drove this car for a few hours. Vibration fed back through the seat. Cornering was floaty. You get the harder ride of M Sport but surprisingly without the benefit of agile handling.
    In 2013 I bought a new 120d M Sport 8 speed sports auto. It was far better than this car. Agile, nippy enough (7 secs), frugal if I wanted it to be (65-70mpg on motorways). It was a great little car. The only car in the new range that may make sense is the 120d xDrive M Sport.

    Hm, I think I'd go for the 120i 4-cylinder. Maybe even with the base analog gauges, I've seen them at my dealer (in a 118i) and I like them more than the LCD.

    • @colla555
      @colla555 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Hiluxtaco You can get the analog gauges even in the Z4 M40i in Germany since July. But you can't order the Navi, HUD or Harman Kardon then. Because if you order any of these, they bundle the digital gauges with that and you lose the analog gauges.

    Looking forward to the new channel !!
    Can you please cover why there’s so many Tosser’s driving in London, I do 35/40mph in 30mph zones during the night, and people drive right up my arse and go past looking at me like I was doing 15mph.
    Uber drivers should be banned, London buses drive like lunatics when out of service and going home, and the most annoying of all is why are ambulances so slow ? They are forever behind me blinding me.

    This version makes sense as everyday hum drum transport. I’m a BMW fan but I’d take the new A Class over this because to me this inside and out looks like every other small hatch. At least the merc has a wow factor interior and a more distinct exterior. I think I might go and take my manual m135 for a spin!

    11k of options? 😂 Someone at the press office is taking the piss surely? Packaging stuff up is a pain and an expensive way to add stuff to your car.
    I’ve seen some entry level cars and they’re truly hateful looking things, managing to look even more bland than the M135i. I can’t see BMW flogging many of the SE cars.
    Interesting that you’re saying that you’re not sure about the M135i, because you seemed pretty positive about it in that video.
