    Rob explains Aviation in clear precise language better than anyone I have heard in my 50 years in the industry.

    Runway numbers are assigned based upon their magnetic compas alignment. Runway 21 points to 210 degrees on the compass. When there are two parallel runways they both point at the same compass heading. So we distinguish them by calling the one to the left, 21L (Two One Left) and the other is 21R (Two One Right). If there are 3 runways you could also have 21C (Two One Center).

  • @davecarr852
    @davecarr852 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Just for those asking about the 21L and 21R all that means is that there are at least two runways that are orientied in the heading of 210 on the compass, L is on the left, and R is on the right. Some larger airports also use a C to indicate center if they have 3 runways with the same orientations. The "left after liftoff" would be established by the announced traffic patterns, shown in the A/FD or by the segmented circle (for those who don't know, the segmented circle is just what it sounds like. A large circle that can be seen from above, with a depiction of runways and markings to let new pilots in the area know what the normal traffic patterns are for each runway. One of the wind socks is usually co-located with this device.

    Fly Runway Heading (or Fly Heading) means to use the magnetic compass or heading indicator and fly that heading. In practice I align with the runway until the runway is no longer visible and then fly the compass heading. It wouldn't be practical to align for drift for very long as you can't see the runway shortly after takeoff. In IMC of course you'd lose it quickly.

    It represents the current series of ATIS. Every hour (or if the weather changes) the ATIS is updated. When that happens, the next letter in the alphabet is used to represent the new ATIS. For example, if the ATIS at 5 PM is info Bravo, the next update at 6 PM will be info charlie.

  • @TheMeslava
    @TheMeslava 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @drumdude46 And by drift correction, they mean "navigation" correction for the wind by reference to stuff, not the regular aileron/rudder correction you normally apply on takeoff. I hope that clears up any confusion.

  • @TheMeslava
    @TheMeslava 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @drumdude46 I have your answer. The reason why you want to maintain the runway heading as it is in "Mag" is because they don't care about wind correction. Basically, you just need to keep "trying" to fly at the heading for the runway you are cleared for, and as you move the wind will be changing where you are, but you are on Radar remember, they know where you are. It's not a precise science, as long as you are maintaining that runway heading, it's not THAT much of a difference.

  • @catmar1944
    @catmar1944 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh, I understood that when the controller says fly runway heading it meant to allow for drift so that you maintain the runway directly behind you, if not what about if you are taking off from a parallel runway and there is another aircraft taking off on the other, the other maintains runway behind him (settin of for drift) and you fly the runway heading and fly into the other aircraft, I am now confused unless someone can clear this up?

    @ 4:20, a takeoff clearance is given for "Rwy Hdg".....etc.... we are then informed to NOT apply any drift correction after takeoff, to seemingly keep us in line with the actual runway hdg behind us?? i'm not understanding this? how can we then maintain an actual, correct rwy hdg, if the wind is blowing us right or left, and Rob Reider says, "no drift correction?" anyone? thanks...

    What do pilots mean by the last "...with information D/A/B..."

    • @Lathanub
      @Lathanub 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It means that the pilot has listened to ATIS information and they are relaying that they have listened to it to the tower by telling them the code given on ATIS, indicating to the tower the pilot understands the information given to them.

      Sorry to jump in, but I think I can help. Each revision of the ATIS information is tagged so that a pilot can tell the controller which version they heard. This label is spoken at the end of each ATIS recording, usually with the words "be advised, you have information [Charlie, Delta, Echo, or whatever the tag is].
      This allows the controller to make sure the pilot has heard the most recent revision. If the pilot says "I have information Juliet" but the current version is information Kilo, the controller knows that the pilot does NOT have the most current data about the airport.
      I'm not certain, but I *think* the version tag changes hourly. Example: if I listen at 12:55, I might hear information DELTA. If I listen again at 13:03, I'll hear ECHO.
      Basically, it's just a way to make sure that everybody (controller, pilot) has the same and most current information about conditions at the airport.
      Hope that helps! :-)

      Because it takes some time to figure out wind correction, it's safer to fly compass heading (even if you drift) because then two parallel departing airplanes will stay parallel. If both pilots try to determine wind correction immediately, they will probably be different and potentially converge.

    • @rodspacer
      @rodspacer 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks a lot!

    • @aviatorandwriter
      @aviatorandwriter 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +rodspacer Joe's correct. It's similar to the idea behind having altimeters set to 29.92 in class A airspace. There will be errors but with everyone in the area flying with the same error, the separation will be the same. In parallel runway operations, both aircraft will have the same drift, keeping their separation the same.

    Not the safest operation with giving a runway crossing then issuing a takeoff clearance for another. Close resemblance to the Lexington accident.
