      Tbh, I think being at the top of the building when it collapsed and having the "cushion" of the falling building piling underneath, may have been the deciding factor of the engine still starting versus if it was at the bottom and hit with the explosion and the mass of the entire building coming down on it. Still, undeniably an absolute legend of a vehicle, and I dream of having a Toyota truck in my personal fleet one day.

    Very hilarious rendition of the history of "technicals".
    I owned a defense contracting company, which I started with former Daimler Benz Executives around 2000, just after the towers went down in New York City.
    Bascially, we developed armor and self sealing fuel tanks for the U.S. Army.
    But,in the process, we got a contract from a military organization to develop a "technical" or in this case a heavily armored Toyota High Lux for some spec ops guys.
    We took a 3/4 ton Chevy Pickup ,threw the body away, and mounted Toyota High Lux cab, bed and body panels on it and armored it to withstand 20mm AP at point blank range .
    Funny story, the Hadjii`s [or insurgents] loved the Toyotas so much that when they received new Nissan Frontiers, or Ford Rangers as gifts from some terrorist funding organization, they would sell them and take the money and buy Toyota`s. LOL

      From an insurgent logistics perspective it makes a lot of sense to ONLY deal with one type of vehicle. Even "monkeys" can learn to wrench on a vehicle, even if they don't understand much. Transferring skills to another vehicle requires actual understanding. But teaching a 15 year old boy how to change wheel bearings can be done in an afternoon. Even the best funded military in the world starts yelling in frustration if they get two different things that fills the exact same role. When you have a shortage both funds, qualified personel and a logistics network as we know it, that disposition becomes doubly understandable.

    • @JJABRAHAM69
      @JJABRAHAM69 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @Jon Hall One can be incarcerated for even describing in casual conversation technical defence details.
      Fun fact,it can be construde to be a violation of ITAR rules.
      I was once asked as an armor developer when I owned my company some years ago, to design a light weight armor to meet 30mm AP protection for a group in the Middle East.
      I asked what the application was, I was informed it would be designed to enhance the top armor protection on tanks.
      I then asked," who's tanks" ?
      The contact divulged it was intended for Pakistani Tanks.
      After I made an ITAR office inquiry, I was informed that in no uncertain terms the answer came back ,"not only no,but hell no"! Lol.

      Incidentally, something which helped the Chadians to make such effective use of the trucks was their historical penchant for mounted warfare. High speed, good visibility, it had worked in the past and it also worked nicely against those types of early cold war tanks which have rather limited visibility.
      That and the fact that repairs and maintenance on the trucks take a lot less manpower and training than doing the same for a soviet tank.

      @@imgvillasrc1608 These were T-55s. No competent military can compensate for the fact that it has little more than a periscope for aiming. Sure, the modern invention of thermal imaging and image intensification ("night vision") makes it a very bad idea to approach a tank from as visible a target as a pick-up truck. But the basic principle of using light and fast vehicles to get troops into positions with shoulder fired AT weapons (like the NLAW or Javelin) is still at the core of modern AT warfare. You're just not supposed to actually fire the weapon from the bed of the truck.

    • @imgvillasrc1608

      @Anders Juel Jensen You're forgetting that the Libyans dug themselves to their graves when they isolated themselves. Whether they had T-55s or T-14 Armata's wouldn't matter. They were surrounded, outnumbered, didn't have air superiority and the initiative. Worse, like usual Arab soldiers, they weren't trained to be competent overall cause Arab politicians only want them as a heavily armed militia to prevent coups and rebellions than an actual military force. Best example, Saudi armored units just running away from Houthi forces when it looked like they're about to get surrounded.
      If the Libyans prepared defenses something like the Saddam Line during the Gulf War, the technical's advantages would have been moot and a lot more of them would have been destroyed.
      Like I said from an earlier comment, it's not about the equipment, it's about the person using it and the people leading them.

    Thank you for doing this, I figured it would be right up Warographics' alley.
    It seems so strange that there is a war named after a car manufacturer, but then you see why and its just... amazing.
    In Portugal, there is a company that still makes brand new, J70 Land Cruisers for the African market (humanitarian and government agencies mostly). They'll build anything you want! From standard Land Cruisers and pickups, to troop carriers and off road rescue vehicles. The list of accessories and modifications is incredible... including Cat 5 armour.
    Question is: Why? Why new ones, and why that model in particular?
    The J70 was the last all-analogue (or at least mostly analogue) Land Cruiser. The Hilux/Land Cruiser is so incredible well loved with such a reputation, that Toyota is still pumping them out (on a small scale) even today.

    One comment though, Chadians actually used J70 Land Cruiser with a pick-up truck bed based on the videos and not the Hilux as some may suggest. It's just that in most recent times, the Hilux is the more prominent vehicle of choice as technicals.
    Details aside, Toyota should be considered one of the largest arms and military equipment exporter in the world. Especially how Hilux pick-ups and early generation Land Cruisers are always present in any conflict in the world. 🤣

    • @Fe_lix
      @Fe_lix ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Actually Chad started using 500 Land Cruiser FJ45 pickups as Technicals, just before the switch to the 70 series.
      And even today the 70 series Land Cruiser is a lot more prominent than the Hilux in armed conflicts to be used as Technicals or troop transport.
      I'm not sure why all those recent American made video about Toyota War make this mistake with the Hilux... Maybe because the Hilux was named the "Toyota Pickup" in the US so when they have in mind Toyota pickups used for Technicals this is the first thing they find. But this is an easy to check info that those historical channels should have been able to find.

    • @keso_de_bola9174
      @keso_de_bola9174 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Fe_lix I'm guessing it has something to do with more recent models. Right now, they are using AN10/AN20/AN30 generation Hilux pick-up trucks. Fair to note N40 to N140 generation Hilux are also popular. I guess these models just stuck and when they saw pick-up variants of J70 land cruisers, they immediately assumed these are Hilux. Heck, even James May's (Top Gear UK presenter at the time and automotive journalist) section on one of his DVDs mistaken the J70 Land cruisers in his video as Hilux.

    • @decker625
      @decker625 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No one could've said this more eloquently.
      I live, work and operate in Africa. And we exclusively drive Land Cruisers. This car and Toyota are such influential brands here, that we started a culture of modifying the land cruisers.
      To the point where Toyota started producing the 4 door pickups because our African modified 4 doors (start their lives as 2 door pickups) sold so well. We use land cruisers for everything here, farming operations, long haul tours through multiple countries, small arms conflict..
      Just Google "land cruiser extended/game viewer." You'll see the wildest modifications. And the Toyota Land Cruiser remains the only reliable base to build these from. Simple, robust and parts galore, and more importantly mechanics love them cause they're built mechanic friendly, they are amazing.
      BUT we noticed Toyota lost out on market share because Ford, VW Amarok and Mazda were offering more creature comforts in their vehicles. Toyota focused on functionality while the urban 4x4'ers required more comfort.
      Heck I remember my dad's one Land Cruiser from the late 70's which still had the triangular side vent you could operate with your foot. It had near no dampening for noise and heat. After 600km in one of those you were partially deaf, hyperthermic and pissed a little blood. But it never broke down. And even today they don't stack up against a Rangers or Amaroks comfort.
      Long story short, the Hilux has become more comfortable to win back lost ground to the Rangers, Amaroks and BT50's while the land cruiser, has improved, but still remains more rugged.
      This is why, I think, the Hilux gets spoken about more in the general public. And that Top Gear episode definitely helped too.
