If i was an armed guard there and saw them roaming around, i wouldn't bat an eye, probably some politician or higher up that wasn't in uniform. He wasn't addicted to drugs or alcoholic, but the depression he had was severe. For all the trouble Shawn Nelson caused, he really opened the eyes to a lot of people the need to support people with depression, especially among veterans and their dishonorably discharged counterparts.

The reason why he wasn't stopped on base I suspect is because he was a former soldier. Anyone who has served will tell you that you can pick out others who have served by how they move and present themselves. My guess is they saw him and knew he served and must of had a reason to be there. There are actually rules that say you have to wear your uniform while on duty and civilian clothes when off duty on base especially over seas. His service allowed him to be camouflaged as a service member off duty on the base, thats at least what I believe.

I recall reading of another incident where an airport worker in Seattle stole an airplane and proceeded to fly around the area near the airport. Air traffic control was able to contact him and they tried to convince the guy to come back in for a landing but he refused. In the ATC recordings it seemed like the guy was really just trying to achieve his dream of flying as he had previously been an airport worker being payed minimum wage and this was his way of 'going out in style', it seemed that he didn't have any intention of returning back safely and shortly after he crashed on an island a few miles west of the airport. You can actually find the ATC recording here on youtube and it's quite interesting to see exactly how exactly the last few moments played out. I believe the video is called 'Seattle Tacoma hijack' or something like that.

Alot of these probably thought he was called into take a look at the tanks that were sitting unattended/maintained. no one would question this cause its not normal for a person to act so calm and knowledgable of military facilities or equipment.

The SDPD officer that gained access to the tank was a SSgt who was a reserve at 4th Tank Bn. His dad retired from the Marines as a SgtMaj and very respected man.
He was discharged, honorably or not, after 2 years. Everything that happened to him, happened *well* after his military career ended. He made poor choices in his life. The VA isn't there to bail you out if you hurt yourself on a civilian motorcycle unrelated to military service much less years after you start up your own business, or turn to drugs and alcohol. Don't try to make this into the VA failing him, because that is 100% not what happened.

I saw this on the news when I was younger. It was interesting and dad, who was active duty at the time, wondered how the police would stop a tank. All the way until it got stuck, he was thinking it'd last until the tank ran out of fuel.
I loved this whole experience. Lived in San Diego at the time in those neighborhoods my uncles friends RV was the one taken out. Across the street from that RV is a school. This was crazy. Story was guy lost everything. He was on his way to downtown SD to the court house with that tank.

I recall reading of another incident where an airport worker in Seattle stole an airplane and proceeded to fly around the area near the airport. Air traffic control was able to contact him and they tried to convince the guy to come back in for a landing but he refused.
In the ATC recordings it seemed like the guy was really just trying to achieve his dream of flying as he had previously been an airport worker being payed minimum wage and this was his way of 'going out in style', it seemed that he didn't have any intention of returning back safely and shortly after he crashed on an island a few miles west of the airport.
You can actually find the ATC recording here on youtube and it's quite interesting to see exactly how exactly the last few moments played out.

Alot of these probably thought he was called into take a look at the tanks that were sitting unattended/maintained. no one would question this cause its not normal for a person to act so calm and knowledgable of military facilities or equipment.

@David McConville Well, issue. How can you fire a tank. When the turret and driver compartment are two separate areas. Sure depending on the model of tank. The driver COULD try to squeeze their way up into the turret. Yet not all have this luxury.

The real headache on one of these claims would be the subrogation (insurance company trying to recover from the at fault party). Obviously the driver wouldn't have any assets, but I wonder if they tried to pursue the government for not securing the tank properly. 🤔

He was discharged, honorably or not, after 2 years. Everything that happened to him, happened *well* after his military career ended. He made poor choices in his life. The VA isn't there to bail you out if you hurt yourself on a civilian motorcycle unrelated to military service much less years after you start up your own business, or turn to drugs and alcohol.
Don't try to make this into the VA failing him, because that is 100% not what happened.

I loved this whole experience. Lived in San Diego at the time in those neighborhoods my uncles friends RV was the one taken out. Across the street from that RV is a school. This was crazy. Story was guy lost everything. He was on his way to downtown SD to the court house with that tank.
