- Highlander Reboot Update from Director Chad Stahelski
The Highlander franchise has been around for a while. Starting in 1986, it spawned five sequels, two live-action TV series, and three animated spin-offs. There’s a lot of mythology to tackle, but the basic premise is that there are race of people known as Immortals, and there can be only one of them. The Immortals are destined to fight, kill each other (the only way to kill an immortal is to decapitate them), until only one remains.
John Wick director Chad Stahelski has been attached to a Highlander reboot since November 2016, and it sounds like the project is in a bit of stasis right not because it’s unclear whether or not it can be a movie or a TV series based on how much mythology they want to tackle. Speaking to Steve Weintraub during an edit bay visit for John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, Stahelski said:
“Still fighting the good fight. Highlander is an interesting property. It’s through Lionsgate as well and Neal Moritz. We’re trying to get it done. Anyone who knows anything about the property knows it has a lot of meat to it. It’s a good property. It’s got a lot of potential. We’re just trying to figure out the best way not to fuck it up. Not to try and fit it into a 1 hour, 45 minute movie, which, when your pitch is, ‘There can be only one,’ and in your first movie you kill everybody but the one, sequels have a problem of happening. So we’re trying to design in a way that gives us a little more lead in, a little more time with the mythology and see some of the best characters. They did seven seasons of TV, and even though the TV show may not hold up today, the idea of it and the characters they brought in were super cool. So we’re trying to devise a methodology that leads up to The Quickening. You just don’t end with a one-on-one battle in New York, cut off a guy’s head, and that’s it. We want to do this in such a way that it becomes more of a series whether it’s short form or long form that would let us explore that in the best way. I have a huge, heartfelt love and respect for the project, so we’re trying to find the best way to do it to give fans what they want.”

Love his love for the series, love everything he said EXCEPT that the show doesn't hold up today :O parts of it doesn't, but a lot of it does, imo. Firstly, Adrian Paul is a got dam LEGEND. Duncan's relationship with Tessa was mature & realistic, and Tessa was a great, strong female character which was rare for TV back then. Fight scenes are epic especially for 90s TV, costume and set design just amazing, the international, global, historical feel of it, all classic. I'm on a rewatch atm and surprised how well it's held up. The show has heart, which makes it timeless.
Dude this movie has to be epic and pure sword play. You are dealing with immortals who have had centuries of sword play and violence, and the movie should strive to portray that.

Honestly I think Highlander done right like LOTR level project could honestly be fucking unbelievable
They can literally remake the entire franchise and starting wayy back to when Immortality was given to a certain group of people and they have to battle throughout time. I'm talking wayy before Conner McCloud and wayy before Methos. If you nurture this I believe you can really make an impact on today.

I think, there' s no need to reboot the highlander franchize. In my opinion they should continue after Highlander: the Source and add and expand the story portrayed in Rammstein - die Sonne clip.
Sounds like he's passionate about the project and not messing it up. Gotta appreciate that.
It has to be its own story with brand new unique characters, not new actors playing old familiar characters playing out a story we’ve already seen. As long as they keep this in mind should be good with the right script.

I had an idea about a tv series reboot which would keep it fresh. Instead of focusing on one character living in the present, make every episode a battle between two immortals set in different time periods and locations. That way you could explore the Immortal Universe in greater detail and keep the show fresh. Make the mythos the main character.
The film Old Guard is part of the Highlander multiverse which includes immortals 😆
Bring it back as a series. The show was awesome. Set it in a Firefly style future or something. Whatever it takes to get some quickenings & swordfights
I like how much he seems to care about the project, if he wants to explain the origins of the quickening and the immortals, that will be quite hard to do without it feeling forced out, like highlander 2.. 😬 I really hope they dont fvck that part up.. I hope the origin is more grounded than highlander II, something like a prehistoric shamans curse gone wrong, and most the rules just being points of chivalry made by Menahem and his men.. idk

If there was a chance to reboot the movie Highlander it will be really awesome that Chad Stahelski takes the helm, he has already proven his talent as much as a director and I really hope this new movie starts in a different way with new ideas without forgetting to bring Christopher Lambert as a cameo or maybe make him part of this new project...... I hope so much that this new movie ( if they really intend to renew it ) I really hope that this new movie will be rich with new ideas and who is up to the task, lets make the fans CRAZY, lets bring the fans of the first movie without an exaggeration. I STILL HOPE....

I see people in the comment section bashing the Highlander series. The series gave so much more to the mythology of Highlander than the movies ever did. The show ignored so much of what was done wrong in the movies. Making it so the gathering happened in the first movie. Doing the aliens nonsense. Making it so the gathering happened but was erased because other immortals woke up. Just so much done wrong. Also the series created some really interesting characters. Many of whom were almost stuck in time, or they never really let go of a certain time period. The thing I liked the most is they had immortals who LOVED being immortal. None of that every immortal is moping all the time because everyone they've known is dead. Yeah they were sad about losing love ones but that didn't stop them from enjoying life. Some of them enjoyed life so much they would avoid fighting other immortals like the plague lol. They also gave the stories more character and emotional depth. The Duncan McLeod story was far superior to Connor's. The movies again is where they lost much of that. I liked Endgame but the 666 killing was stupid. Duncan in the first season killed a guy that was THOUSANDS of years old. The idea he never killed that many immortals in that time made no sense. Not going to talk about the other movie in the "future". It was like the director said let's do all the things that made the second Highlander movie hated.

I think it would be awesome if the first one took place in 16th century Scotland only. Second one in the 19th century. And the third one in 1986, the year OG Highlander came out. No jumping between timelines, just a linear story. And I'd rather see a slightly unknown actor play Connor, preferably from Scotland. Richard Madden would be perfect!

Please boost the immortals healing!! Doesn't need to be Wolverine-level, but pretty unrealistic for guys to be living hundreds or thousands of years using swords and not be able regrow fingers, hands etc. You lose those eventually.

Yeah I would love to have a Stan Lee style cameo by Christopher Lambert he meets with the reboot Connor somewhere and talks with him about something and when he leaves he says "Whatever you say Jack you're the master ace." As a reference to what he said to that German soldier in the original film.
The TV show still holds up today.
Have the watchers narrate the story and the first watcher is an immortal who wants to keep a record. Not Marius but older and even a mentor to him. It'd be great to do it as a show with the budget of something like game of thrones or outlander. I think you could really dig in deep especially if it follows multiple immortals rather than just one.
Having it as a movie is the worst idea it should stay a tv series this was the greatest tv series of it's tv huge fan I think u should bring back the lead person to move it forward into the next generation and take your time in finding the new cast members for the show I would have the old cast help interview people they have been apart of the series for so long they know how they should look and be don't just throw this series together no one will watch it thank you
I just finished re-watching the television series and I think that it holds up fine so long as we allow for the old technology like landline phones and enormous mobile phones. That said, it ended as if nobody cared about the story anymore.

If you thinking about new designs of swords that you can use in the movie try Kit Rae. He might come up with something good. Moreover, the plot has to be really good. Just as you said the idea is great. And do not do the series, I'd rather the trilogy of movies and the main fight in the last movie.
The one big problem is the original movie was unapologetic and fresh. They technically killed of the first movie with the horrible sequel and boring TV show by destroying the myth and simple narrative. The fucking planet Zise . Urrrrah !!!

Now we are talking and the issues are very real. A series reboot would kill it better than a feature, take a look at how the CW rebooted The Flash while honoring the 90's series, not that they compare except in terms of how a series sometimes struggles to hold up over time.
If they can make a remake try it. But no cliff hangers and good action scenes-that are well play realistically. Sure it would be best to have the original Paul and Connor but do what you can. Maybe if this does good a sequel with them will occur. Also the old movies had more run time than today’s movies. I don’t know why might be the budget value of money back then. Paul is great but I hope he won’t charge a lot for the first reboot and try to promote it honestly. Then after a modest results then he could charge like crazy or retire after the next sequel. Maybe he could reboot a tv series or some TH-cam video series which would get more views and profits in ad revenue.

Psstt, Chad mate. If you want to make a franchise of the Highlander series then why don't you just set your remakes in various periods from Connor MacLeod's past life and have them all lead up to the final film which would be the remake of the first Highlander set in the present day.

I think the biggest problem today is not that they cant do it. Its more like how do we pay our actors our film crew, our props and sets and travel and fees and animals and all the things that go into a show and convince CBS Vicom NBC or Disney or Netflix or any other big company to by our idea. The writers and the actors and the whole production has to be SPOT on or else the franchise a.ka. the cash cow will vanish like it did for starwars. I think they are stuck after HIGHLANDER the source became a rag in the dust bin. Now i think they just dont know how to recover. Its a cult classic its all been done. I think the best they can do now is a complete reboot with all new younger actors. A complete retcon retelling is their best shot.

No, no 'exploration of the mythology' to be done. That is *precisely* what fucked it up. May as well just make the whole thing CG, so you dont have to use your imagination at all and everything can be spoonfed to you. That will leave more time for videogame worthy swordfights and hero throws through brick walls. Maybe they can destroy half of downtown like Godzilla when they fight, you know, just to clarify how powerful immortals are.
No, this is a bad idea, from first principle, but that said, the only 'exploration' to be done, is maybe a bit of expansion of the flashbacks and a couple more meetings, than the two, in the original movie. I feel like a *little* more of his 400 years of experiences would've been cool. Yeah, Highlander could've been a half hour longer.

Hopefully the remake will learn from the dreadful Highlander sequels and leave it open so the reboot of the franchise will be coherent. Have it focus on Connor MacLeod. None of this Duncan MacLeod/series crap.
