  • Yes.. ANOTHER new build.. this is the brand new 1/24 Spitfire from Airfix. In part one we make a start on the cockpit with assembly of the seat, thinning the plastic seatbelts and building the rest of the cockpit area ready for paint and primer.     I remember building 1/72 scale Airfix kits from the 70s. 2 sprues and minimal detail. This looks a galaxy of difference.

    just wish you would show things like what superglue you are using -ie labels
    Your attention to detail is amazing- going back to drill lightening holes and fill that ejection mark

      I have done many reviews about glues, tools and reviews. I don't want to be too repetitive.. The glue I am using here is either VMS thin black or black.

    Hi Nige, the battery that you refer to is the same radio. The twin tanks are air reservoirs for the pneumatics, undercart, guns etc. great build. Paul

    For small CA jobs i use the Tamiya CA accelerator in the small bottle and brush..quik swipe and job done..

    I assume the parachute filled the seat and made it more comfortable as it was strapped to the pilots backside

      I have the book which comes from the Tamiya 1/32 kit. I also use Google images.

      @@NigelsModellingBench The number one reference for the MK IX is " Spitfire Engineered " by Monforton. It's expensive but even catalogues every rivet in the airframe.

    This one looks like it's going to be fun! Don't go too deep with it, just enjoy putting it together OOB and giving us a heads up if there's any problems. Let the Lancaster have a rest.

    Nice start Nigel. Looking at a few Google images of the seat. It looks like there was a seam line at the bottom of the back of the seat. It looks to be about 4 inch above the bottom curve in the pictures.

    My kit arrived today. I did find that some of the transparent parts had come off the sprue and were rattling around in the bag, including the correctly shaped canopy.

      There doesn't seem to be any damage, but I've not taken them out of the bag yet. I will open it and pack them separately.

    Back again . Good video. Do you think that if Red fox or Quinta brings out 3D for the cockpit would you consider it worth the outlay seeing that o o the box is good ?

      In a word YES. The red Fox IP will always be better than the kit parts.

    It appears that part D36 (the windcreen de-icing system) is a fault in the mould, as it's the same in all the builds I've watched and in my kit. I've resorted to surgery based on photos.

    These videos are great but can you (in subsequent videos) zoom the camera in tighter? It's hard to see the details you're doing, yet there's loads of the mostly empty green mat showing. If you could zoom in beyond tighter than even the small, green, inner mat, it would show so much more of what you're doing.

    Hi Nigel, thank you so much for this series on 1:24 Airfix Spitfire IX, they are brilliant!! Can you please suggest sources of a suitable Pilot and ground crew as I would like to build a diorama built into a coffee table. Built quite a few kits in the past but consider myself a newbie at 63 to the intricacies of fine scale modelling 😂

    What is the paint part ratio for the Cockpit Green using Tamiya XF-71 and Tamiya XF-21. Thank you

      There is no true mix for the colour. I tend to add a drop of 21 to lighten it a bit.

    Hi Nigel. That part that ‘fits’ on the side wall you’re having trouble with, do you suppose heating it up with a hair dryer first might help?

      Yes, but you'd need to be pretty quick with fitting it before it cools??

    flares were on the early spitfires, but removed as they got in the way of the pilots (put a 4 inch wide book at the front of your seat while driving - it feels odd) - and found not to be of use.

    Nigel looking at the separate seatbelts in this kit I think Airfix should have opted for PE seatbelts instead. The plastic ones aren't realistic looking and are too thick.

    They had most , if not all variants of this model on show at Telford and I must say they are all tempting . But that’s a lot of money.

      I've just seen the pricing on the upcoming Takom Apache kits. The RRP price is £100, but most sites are putting pre-orders up at £89.99. Now that is expensive for a 1/35 chopper kit. So, I don't think £95 is that expensive for a 1/24 kit.

    Hi Nigel, great informative video. Just one point I want to raise. At the bottom of the first page of the instructions under the title "For Best Results" it recommends the sprues are washed in warm, soapy, water. At the beginning of your video you decided not to do that. I'll follow the instructions as I don't want to come any release agent, greasy fingerprints etc..

      I normally would wash the sprues, but having seen the video where the kits are made, they stated they don't use release agents.. so I didn't bother on this occasion.
