  • This Science Garage hits the road to talk with Formula Drift driver, Odi Bakchis. Odi runs his own suspension company, and makes coilovers for all the sick cars that need them. He runs us through the ins and outs and ups and downs for performance suspension and coilovers. We talk about what makes one coilover better than another, and how to know you’re getting a suspension upgrade that does more than just look good!
    Check out Feal Suspension:

Bart teaches us how cars work by blowing stuff up and cutting things in half. It’s a science show for the car lover who’s easily bored. Join Bart as he explains the science behind everything automotive. This is cars down to the atom. This is Science Garage.

I like how Bart is speaking quietly. He’s being taught something and it shows that he is taking all of the information in. He’s truly paying attention. Despite teaching us about cars a lot, he’s not ashamed to be the student here and there. You never stop learning. Even if he already knew every single thing, he still stayed humble.

Essentially the fluid inside has metal shavings or a metallic flavor to it. When a magnetic field is applied to the fluid its viscosity changes and "clogs" the orifaces so it gives you different rebound and dampening settings "on the fly" by different electronic signals.
Kinda old tech from GM in the late 90s. The whole story is its British made by GM money that was sold off to Chinesw investors.
But the damper changes for each corner of a track by gps is kinda new. Also F1 started to play with programmable suspension in the 90s (I think) until it was banned because it worked so well.

Something I've always pondered about - magnetic damping. I've seen videos of a neodymium magnet dropped through a copper tube, it goes very slowly because of eddy current resistance - a form of damping, with force proportional to speed. Could someone build a shock using this principle? Would be extremely simple, and no fluid to leak. Could get more adjustability by using an electromagnet so force can be adjusted very quickly, still very simple and with very cheap components. No sliding seals, just linear bearings (which would be fairly simple to replace) so it ought to last forever. Would want to put fins on the outside for cooling, but internal components would not get hot as the heat is generated by eddy currents in the outer tube.

Awesome video! For those VW Jetta MK4 enthusiasts out there (that have experience with various coilovers), what is the best suspension system for a daily drive VW JETTA GLI 2004 2.8L VR6 24v (BDF) six speed. H&R, Bilstein, Eibach, KW, Koni or KSport, or perhaps a mix and match, or something else? I want quality materials, able to go low (at least 2") and not too stiff. Any opinions out there? Please reply to my message.

I drive a full-size truck, already dropped on belltech coils and belltech leafs, but say I want to really up the handling of the truck and convert to a coilover 4-link or 5 link rear, what would I be looking for? As far as driving, mostly would be on the street, so lots of uneven surfaces, bumps, humps, dips, cracks, and potholes. Is softer or stiffer better for that? And if softer is, isn't that going to be detrimental to body lean, I would think?
Trying to get ideas for when I can really rip into my project ..

This video fails at VISUALLY showing us the coiliover when they are EXPLAINING it. We dont want to see you looking at it and learning. Show the camera.

Primary and secondary spring... The smaller spring rate (secondary spring) is for better ride over small bumps. That's why it's called a duel spring rate as opposed to progressive spring rate...

Directing 101: everyone's eyes are drawn to the left first. Place Odi on the left and make the other guy wear a quieter shirt. This video is hard to watch.

gotta say the kid audience noises are cringey in the science garage videos, not same effect as James' school class crowd member bit, those sounds just turns me off bit, love the content, just want more people/me, to finish the videos, this is the only series that doesn't have me goofily smiling
