- The four daughters of Tsar Nikolai II of Russia and Tsarina Alexandra Feodrovna were born to a couple who ruled 1/6th of the world. Olga was bright and temperamental; Tatiana outgoing and creative; Maria affectionate and fretful and Anastasia charming and a born trouble maker. They grew up in palaces and their devoted and overprotective parents kept them naive of the wider world. We’ll follow the four Romanov daughters as they try to smile through the Russian Revolution, their father’s forced abdication and their stiffly house arrest. We’ll see how they met their tragic fate, follow the decades of rumors surrounding their possible escape and meet Anna Anderson and a few of the people who claimed to be one of the children who had alluded doom.

I don’t know why, but the story of the Romanovs, and their cruel deaths really haunts me, and has a strong affect on me.
Ever since I was a child this story has haunted me. When I found out all bodies were accounted for I wept and felt despair.
I started learning about the Romanovs after watching the Anastasia animated movie as a child. Its a brutal end to a family. Be it royalty or not, no family deserves the treatment they went through.
I think, we feel like we all can relate that they lived like typical human beings and their story is repeatedly told. We are human to feel that their family did not receive humane treatment. We seek justice and peace for them.
Every time I see the girls vs. guys Time Travel memes, I'm tempted to make one where the Romanov family actually escaped.

Its crazy how much Nikolai and George V looked so much alike! They look more like brothers than cousins imo.
It caused a fair bit of confusion when Nicholas went to London to attend George's wedding--they were regularly mistaken for each other.
That kinda happen to me also. I have this cousin that resembles me greatly, when we were kids obviously.

It really isn't that extraordinary. Not only were their mothers sisters but they were related on their fathers side as well. The paternal link was like second cousins.
I can never forgive King George refusing to give the Tsar and his family shelter and then turning around to send a ship for Nicholas's mother and other relatives. Even if he didn't allow them entry to England, he could have sent them somewhere else. They just needed to get them out of Russia

It really is. George and Nicholas could have been mistaken for twins. So I wonder if he saw Nicholas's face when he looked in the mirror and regretted Nicky's fate every time he saw his reflection
I don’t think his mother would’ve forgiven him for if he had allowed her beloved sister to be executed. Part of the reason the Dowager Empress was spared was because she obviously had no claim to the throne.
@@piratesswoop725 was she spared or did she get the hell out of dodge in time? Other aristocrats were taken out by the Bolsheviks too. That's why I don't think she was spared. I think they would have taken out the rest of the tsar's family if they could
George V was concerned that offering asylum to the Romanovs (children even) would encourage a Socialist revolution in the UK. Also Alexandra's German heritage made him further reluctant to offer asylum due to the Anti-German sentiment from WW1.
OTMA was basically in their late teens to early 20s when their lives ended in such a horrific note. I always hoped the Big Pair were married off earlier so they could have escaped their fate. Not to mention it took 3 rounds of shooting & stabbing to finish off the Little Pair (is it that hard to kill someone quickly 😭)
I don't feel bad for Nicholas II, but rather his family & loyal servants bc. of his ineptitude.

Most of them initially survived, because their jewelry shielded them from the bullets, so they had to suffer, until they were finally killed by being shot in the head :(
It was cruel but it was also cruel that Russian soldiers went to was during WW1 without arms or boots and that Russian children were starving and I am sure some froze to death.

She didn't survive. My maternal grandmother was born into a wealthy Macedonian family in 1916 and her name was originally Anastasia. Once my great grandmother read the news in 1917, my grandmother's name was changed to Spasa.
I can see why people hoped Anastasia survived but unfortunately, DNA evidence proved that she did indeed die with the rest of her family in 1918.

@@ode6105 She died, it's highly unlikely she or any of them would have escaped. You don't have to believe everything, but sometimes common sense prevails. There's no real reason to lie about DNA results in the 21st century seeing as the Romanovs are relatively irrelevant and the Bolsheviks are gone. They found the remains of the other bodies, it's hard to accept but the cold truth is they were all killed that night

It’s quite rare for that to happen. Many royals grow up for generations with a cold and distant relationship with their families.
Your comment reminds me of Shakespeare's quote in Henry V, "Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown". Personally I rather be part of the nobility than royalty. In case of revolutions, I might still have a chance to escape. Being royal isn't all it's cracked up to be.

As bizarre as "Rasputin was an evil undead wizard that caused the revolution" was, it might make more sense than the modern Russian government's balancing act of wanting to celebrate the martyred royal family *and* also Stalin and Lenin. It was a really pretty movie at least, its fashion wasn't that far off from reality but all looked so pretty

That was the worst insult to this royal family which eventually lead to their tragedy. There is no evidence to suggest Rasputin had a secret affair with Russia's queen. Thats all bullshit.

Ever since I learned the real tragic truth in history class, I haven't watched Anastasia 1997 ever since cause it hurts. Anna Anderson took the "pretending to be a princess" game to a whole new level lol.
There's a historical fiction novel by Ariel Lawhon titled, "I was Anastasia" where the narration flits between Anastasia (real Romanov) & Anna Anderson. Highly recommended for anyone fascinated with the 4th Grand Duchess & her famous imposter.

Of the 4 Romanov daughters, only Anastasia was under 18. The eldest was just short of 23. By standards of the time, they should have been "married off" to some random noble or royal by then...... this would have given the monarchy a possible second wind later.... if George V had just allowed the girls to travel to the UK, they might have survived....... Nicholas II was not a strong leader..... and his family died because of his ineptitude.
Correct, so far as you have stated it. But it should be pointed out that the widespread belief that Tsar Nicholas' "entire family was wiped out" is actually inaccurate. Several of the Tsar's sisters survived the purge and created families, and there were oodles of aunts, uncles and cousins of the Tsar who also survived and left families behind. So the Romanov line is far from extinct. There is, however, no doubt that George V bears some responsibility for the tragedy at Ekaterinburg because he could have intervened to help get Nicholas' family out, but declined because he feared a backlash in Britain against bringing a gaggle of foreign Royals into the country, and on the backs of the taxpayers. George's cowardice had deadly consequences for Nicholas II and his wife and children, and will forever remain a black mark on his legacy in particular, and the British royal family in general.
Nope. Since the reign of Tsar Paul, women couldn't inherit the Russian throne unless they were no males available. And since there were a lot of Romanov men around (descended from Nicholas' many uncles), the girls never had a shot at succession.

They didn't deserve to die this horrifically :( Their parents might've done some bad stuff, sure, but they did nothing wrong other than being born into a family like seriously they should've just been exiled or something, I know the reason they got killed was because they don't claim to be the Tsar of Russia or whatever, but still :(

Like so many civilians in Tsarist Russia & the Soviet Union, the children were victims of circumstances. Somewhere the Bolsheviks must be spinning in their Graves seeing that despite all efforts, the Russians not only remembered, but canonized the Royal Family.

Hi, love the videos! Just for reference though facial reconstruction technology was used in the late 2000s (i think around 2008) to compare the missing daughter with photographs of the grand duchesses. They found from those studies that it was most likely Maria who had been the missing princess based on her facial structure as opposed to Anastasia. They concluded that Anastasia had actually never been missing at all and it was Maria who had been buried separately with Alexei. They were buried separately to deliberately throw off royalists at the time and make it much harder for people to identify the royal family and give them a proper burial together. Which is why they weren’t excavated until the 1990s - along with not being able to during the Soviet Union.
It was actually because the cart that was carrying the bodies was too heavy and got stuck. They took two of the bodies out which were Alexei and Maria to move the cart and burned the bodies.
It's adorable though that Alexei shaved his head in support of his sisters, what a little cherub.

When you mentioned about one of your ancestors running away reminded me of my dad's side of the family... Apparently, my dad's ancestors were cut out of the family wealth..... Twice.... because 1, had a child out of wedlock and another wanted to remarry... When my mother, who is into genealogy, told me I found it beautiful at how not once but twice the women in my dad's family went against the family for love and passion

I have to disagree about one thing. The reason why George changed his mind being "because the Zsar was a tyrant." It was because of Anti-German sentiment after WWI. His cousin the Zsarina was a German princes (Hesse and by Rhine) and the last thing that George wanted was a reminder of the royal family's German heritage to galvanize anti monarchy sentiment. It was based upon fear that his country might topple to Republicanism and possibly Communism chose to leave his family out to dry.
He was cousins with the Zsar through through their mothers Queen Alexandra and Empress Dagmar of Russia were both daughter of Christian IX of Denmark Whereas George and the Zsarina were cousins through Edward VII and Princess Alice of the UK both children of Queen Victoria (2nd and 3rd child respectively).
In order to Anglicanize the family he changed the family name from the German Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to Windsor.
His own wife was Austrian.
@@billcipherproductions1789 Not to mention he himself was German. Their house name was Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the previous house was Hanover. His mother's Queen Anne was Danish. But before they were the Danish royal family they were a German royal ducal family.
England was the British Empire, they could have sent them to Canada, Australia or South Africa or some place else. They did not have to stay in England.
@@laken1804 I don't think Canada, Australia or any other place would have accepted that. It might have caused them to leave the Commonwealth. It is sad, but there wasn't much choice for him. The last thing any of them wanted was reminders of their own German heritage. It is tragic but he was told by the PM that taking them in could topple the monarchy itself.

If they were willing to use their own money, and live a less extravagant life; they might have been able to save their lives. Even if it was not in a country that is part of the commonwealth.

There was a book i read when i was younger, written as though the diary/journal of anastasia. I think this book introduced a sadness in the world to me that I didnt know existed yet. She was just a young girl, they all were. With similar longings, hopes and thoughts i could really relate too. But then things got so dark. The epilogue that briefly explained what happened to them brought death closer than it ever had been in my reality at that time and reflecting now i think Anastasia became the first person I mourned. I still never understand the civilian and innocent casualties of war. No cause seems justified to explain these actions.
Princess Diaries? Pretty sure that book was the beginning of the end of my childhood innocence.

@@brileigh912 Absolute primogeniture means the eldest child succeeds, regardless of gender. You’re thinking of agnatic or Salic succession, but Russia had a unique succession system, semi-Salic law. On the surface, succession was limited only to eligible male dynasts, but eligible female dynasts were eligible to succeed if, and only if, there were no living eligible male dynasts. This is technically the case today, as there are no eligible male dynasts anymore. By the old rules, there are currently no living male dynasts. There are many princes of the imperial blood descended from grand dukes, and Nicholas’ sister Xenia’s married a Romanov cousin and although their six sons were only princes, they probably have a claim based on being descendants of Nicholas’ nephews. There’s also the descendants of Grand Duke Kirill, who are also now only descended in a female line.

My dad knew Anna Anderson's husband. He lived down the street from where my dad was going to college at the University of Virginia and dad used to help him carry his groceries home. He said he was a grumpy old man who wore argyle sweaters and had dozens of dogs

Hi Lindsay, I just love your videos! I am obsessed with royalty. I think remember reading recently that the two remaining bodies are still waiting to be buried due to the Russian Orthodox Church wanting more proof of their identities. I really hope they are finally laid to rest soon. Such a sad story

I think that it is so disturbing because in the realm of history it's something that happened not that long ago. Seriously it was the modern world. There's so many photographs of the family that it makes it more real.

I would like to think that the children survived… but if they did, why would they want to go back to that life? Like if being royal threaten your life why would you want to be back in there?
They’d probably still want a comforting home, and probably would have been curious about the bigger world. They would need guides to help them cope with the rougher realities outside the palace walls.

Yes. It was convenient to put the blame on someone in order to justify the murders. Sure the Tsar was not a saint but I don't think he was evil. He was just too weak to rule an empire as vast as Russia. It was easy to misunderstand and vilify people such as the Tsar because of the mystery and inaccessibility.

It was a very unfortunate incident of being born in wrong family,druring wrong time,and be the wrong person for what duty Nicolas ii had...he was majorly misunderstood and manipulated,he was surrounded by imposters,which lead him and his beautiful family to this cruel end...

@@D8Alexx in most of the recent books or articles I have read about the Tsar and his family. The documents suggested that the Tsar and his wife were so in love with each other because of their similarities. They were both very private person and very affectionate towards their family and close circle of friends. The tsarina, being raised in a simpler household, wanted a simpler life with just her family, away from the more opulent lifestyle of the Russian royalty. Some of the negative things said about the tsarina was perpetuated by the Russian upper class too, because they were not in favour of her isolating herself too much. The Tsar himself have on a few occasions speak of his dream of living a simpler life as a farmer. The Tsar was a quiet man, he was not happy with the burden hoisted onto his shoulders by becoming a Tsar of a vast empire but was too weak to put up a fight.

My mom gave me my first middle name “ Anastasia” she said she wanted to give that name a second chance as the princess who died deserved to live longer. Strangely I’m a clown and the family’s laugh canon like her 😂😄

If you were these two youngest siblings and you really did escape why on EARTH would anyone think they would come out and say, “hey, remember years ago when everyone thought I died, well, I didn’t.” I would think that they would be too paranoid especially after witnessing such a horrible thing happen to their family. I know I wouldn’t come out and reveal my presence, I would keep that locked away until I died

My great grandmother was born in 1912,her birth name was Ana Maria,it was changed to Anria when she became 5!its sad tbh,she was from a rich russian family and they moved to austria in 1920!my great grandma had her first child in 1938,and called her ana-maria since her name was changed,this is why my sister is called Anastasia Maria
I have enjoyed all of your videos and learn something new each time. I did notice an error with the Romanov Impostors Family Tree. The photo you chose of Natalya Bilikhodze is actually a picture of Jeanne Calment. She has the distinction of being the oldest person on record at 122 years old. However, some believe she was also an impostor and was the daughter and took over the identity of her mother.
I was going to say that the picture was wrong, I searched it up to check and I think she accidentally used the wrong photo as Jeanne’s photo is used in articles about impostors in which natalya is also mentioned
